Ayala gave Alcatraz its curious name, calling it Isla de Los Alcatraces, (a word variously translated as pelicans, gannets, cormorants, or simply “strange-looking birds”).

More history than what you usually hear: Prison Life on Alcatraz, escape attempts, Indians taking over the island.
