Cool idea, but the execution was a tad off.
It's very possible that this was a good book but having not read it, I couldn't tell you how it compares to the source material.

description

The short version is that all the women across the globe are falling asleep and growing these cocoons around them. If by some chance you try to pull their webbing off, they go into a mindless rage and try to kill you.
BUT. There's a weird woman who shows in this little town who isn't affected by the Aurora sickness. She's some sort of a creepy avatar who now resides in a women's prison and keeps telling the sheriff's husband, the prison psychologist, that he's somehow the only man capable of saving the woman.
There are also all these side stories with various characters who are trying to figure things out or just take advantage of the situation while the world burns.

description

Honestly, I didn't care for the art.
The story is ok, and it may be worth it if you are a fan of the book.
I doubt I'll continue, though.

I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via Black Crow Pr.

Sleeping Beauties volume 1 is a fast paced graphic novel that both intrigues and creeps into your mind. Women are being infected by some sort of virus that forms a cocoon around their heads and bodies when they fall asleep. They can't wake up and if anyone tries to remove the cocoon or try to rouse them they become feral and attack. A mysterious woman called Eve Black appears and seems to know what is to come but is in great danger of being killed for a cure as word has got out that she can sleep normally and nothing happens to her.
This book is 120 pages and is a great series starter for this novel by Stephen and Owen King. I haven't read the original book of Sleeping Beauties but this has definitely whetted my interest to start it very soon! The illustrations are great - I preferred the ones by Jana Heidersoorf in this book but all of them were befitting to the story and the eeriness and creepiness in the book was well captured.

The moment I saw there was to be a graphic novel adaptation of a Stephen and Owen King novel I had to read it. Now, I will admit to not having read the full novel yet (that thing is HUGE and I'm a bit intimidated by it if I'm honest) but now that I have the beginnings of the story under my belt in this more 'digestible' format I'm even more curious to read it in its original form.

I will say this graphic novel is not for the faint of heart. It isn't 'pretty' in any conventional sense, it isn't 'light reading' either, it is brutal and violent and tragic and graphic in the extreme. All the trigger warnings.

Horror is very much my go-to genre when it comes to graphic novels. I read almost exclusively horror in this format, and I infrequently read horror any other way (Stephen King is perhaps the only exception, but even then, those are few and far between). So I knew at least the genre was going to suit me, and I found the story compelling too; "A bizarre sleeping sickness, known as Aurora, has fallen over the world, and strangest of all, it only affects women. In the small town of Dooling, a mysterious woman has walked out of the woods; she calls herself Eve and leaves a trail of carnage behind her. More mysterious: she's the only woman not falling asleep."

I have seen a lot of reviewers have found this book confusing, it swaps between places and characters without warning, and it simply expects you to keep up. It doesn't explain everything in the text, you genuinely have to read the pictures too, or you'll miss too much of what is going on. You have to pay attention, there is no skim reading here, but if you can get into the groove with it then it is a promising start to the series for sure.

I found the art style to be fitting to the genre and the story being told, it is messy, it is scratchy, and unclean, but that does suit the story being told, and it helps to evoke the mood and atmosphere of the book. If you are at all familiar with Wytches (by Scott Snyder with art by Jock) or with Gideon Falls (by Jeff Lemire with art by Andrea Sorrentino), then the art here is somewhere between the two, and somehow takes that unclean style even further.

Overall I enjoyed the ride with this one, I'm super intrigued by Eve and I would for sure read more to find out what else this tale has in store. I did find the beginning just a little sluggish to get into, but once I found my stride it was an enjoyable read. I feel this has probably lost quite a lot of the original novel in translation, so I can't rate this higher as a stand-alone piece, but I am definitely more compelled to pick up the novel now and look forward to the next graphic novel installment.

3.5 intense stars.

Thank you so much to Penguin Random House and IDW for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was such a great book to graphic novel adaptation! They really nailed the storyline to perfection which is pretty surprising and I was very pleased. I know a lot of King readers weren’t huge fans of this book but I loved it and I was thrilled to get to revisit it in graphic novel form. The artwork is just beyond stunning too, it’s absolutely beautiful and fit the story perfectly. The colours were just spectacular too, a true feast for the eyes!

Not bad.

Not exactly what I was expecting but not bad. I’ll definitely read book 2 (of 2) to see how this ends. 3.75 stars rounded to 4.

"Hell hath no fury like a woman woken."

I can't believe that I still haven't read Sleeping Beauties: the novel. I own it and I look at it all the time, it just hasn't happened yet. It's my plan to read this book by the end of the year.

Since I haven't read the novel yet, I decided to give this a try first. The story was bizarre and enjoyable. The art wasn't my favorite but some of it was gruesome and that was my favorite of the art. Most of it just didn't do it for me. As a whole, this was pretty decent.

Sleeping Beauties Graphic Novel was pretty awesome and it leaves you on quite the cliffhanger. I can't wait to see how this all plays out.

This is a GN adaptation of Stephen King's "Sleeping Beauties" novel. I've not read the novel but the story for the GN is interesting. The art? Meh. Not so much.

One day a mysterious disease called "Aurora" is causing women to fall asleep and become covered in a cobweb-like substance and keep sleeping. If awakened and the cobweb substance disturbed, the women become psychotically violent.
There is one woman, who seems to have a special connection to Mother Earth, who seems immune to the disease, yet she may have a role to play. Interred in a psych hospital/detention center, she reaches out to the Psychiatrist to explain the mystery, as outside society seems to be turning on women at large. What is the mystery of the woman in the prison cell and what is the connection with the Psychiatrist? That's the essence of the mystery and it is an interesting story. It is interesting enough that I shall get the 2nd volume.

The art? It was not to my liking. It's a shame since this is a story that could have benefitted from some good art. Mediocre is perhaps the best I could say for it. Sadly, my volume had a nice collection of alternate covers and art by various artists and any one of them would have made a far superior choice as the artist. It's frustrating to see art and realize the entire story could have been illustrated that way. Too bad.

Good over all outing. I've been meaning to listen to the novel on audiobook soon and will definitely be doing so after experiencing this.

I'm not familiar with the creators and went into this entirely blind. We get some pandemic like feels here along with the deterioration of society as we know it. There are some horror/ fantasy elements also. I really dig the art work in the sleeping world.

We can look forward to how the boys get along without the girls in part 2 though I'm guessing things will spiral out of control.

This is my first graphic novel. I loved the art, I loved the idea of the story. Why I didn't like this first installment, I don't think it was clear. It felt jumpy and that the graphic did not translate the story clearly. The plot and discourse was choppy. It did get better towards the end but I feel like I missed so much of the story originally written.

The visual aspect that was added to the story was excellent. I liked the artwork alongside the story. The book was okay rating (2.5 stars) because of the lack of clarity, connection, and struggle to get the story. Maybe the next installment will be stronger.

I’ve heard of this book when it came out, but that’s about it. At 721 pages, it’s about twice the size a book ought to be, and (for me) a turnoff. In graphic novel form, though, it’s perfect. Well, for now anyway, we’ll see how long it’ll take to adapt a novel that prolix. The graphic novel certainly appears to be taking a leisurely approach, but it’s a more forgiving genre in general.
And so, I ended up really liking it. Wasn’t sure what to expect and Owen is the lesser of the King’s sons, talent-wise, but as a duo, they are pretty dynamic. And the art was very good, great portrait drawings, real faces with real expressions, so much more than a cover would lead you to expect.
Y The Last Man did a gender apocalypse. Excellently. By killing off all men. Sleeping Beauties went in the opposite direction. In this story something’s affecting women only, cocooning them, taking them away to an Edenic world in their sleep. Unless they are woken from their sleep, in which case they become unreasonably and uncontrollably violent. There’s only one women, Evie (to continue the Edenic theme) who seems to be unaffected by it all. She knows more than she’s telling, but this is only the beginning of what appears to be a drawn-out story, so just wait…
It’s almost a certainty that the entire production will have a strong politically correct message, King and his offspring are known for that, something pro feminist and timely. We shall see. Message or not, it’s a pretty entertaining story off to a promising start. Recommended.

I've read the novel, but for some reason when I saw this story it illustrated form it hit me: This story is really weird. I mean it is OUT there.

Anyway, the basic premise is we have this mystical character named Eve show up at a small town prison, and then all the women in the world are struck by a sleeping sickness. They fall asleep and cocoons form around them. If you cut them free, they go nuts and kill people around them. While they are asleep, they all inhabit a world without men.

The art in the story really wasn't my favorite, and this was never one of my favorite King novels. That being said though, it is an interesting read. Even though the story is really far out, it's also very original.

Sleeping Beauties is Volume 1 of the graphic novel series. I did not read the book that this series is based on. And I've actually never read anything by Stephen King.

Horror is definitely not my normal genre. But I saw these graphic novels and decided to try them. This was an interesting story. But a bit too creepy for me.

The illustrations were nice. But the way the words were printed in a black bubble were not super easy to read on my fire tablet.

Overall, I am definitely curious how it compares to the novel. Will read the second volume to see how it ends.

While I’m not in love with the artwork by Alison Sampson or even, for that matter, Rio Youer’s graphic novel adaptation of the original novel by Stephen and Owen King, “Sleeping Beauties” isn’t a horrible series.

A strange woman walks out of the woods and viciously kills two meth-heads. All across the world, women are going to sleep and not waking up. Not only that, but a soft, white fur—-like a cocoon—-encases their sleeping bodies. Any attempt to remove the cocoon results in the women attacking violently.

In the small town of Dooling, the day starts like any other day for the Norcrosses: Jared is off to high school, Clint is off to work at the local women’s penitentiary, and Lila is off to investigate a double murder as sheriff. They have no idea that the world is about to turn upside down.

As the “Aurora Flu” reaches pandemic proportions, confused men are at a loss as to what to do. Some just want to protect their cocooned loved ones. Others kill themselves, fearing the end of the world. Others—based on misinformation from social media—-are taking the law into their own hands. When a falsified memo allegedly from a pharmaceutical company goes viral on Facebook, groups of militant men are organizing to burn the cocooned bodies in a futile attempt to “contain” the virus.

Clint soon finds himself in charge of the prison, with a growing percentage of the prison population succumbing to Aurora. Lila has succumbed, and she finds herself in another universe, where the sleeping women are.

This first volume includes issues #1-5.

Like the novel, Youers’ adaptation attempts to add to the dialogue about gender equality, rape culture, and the #MeToo Movement via the horror genre. While Youers’ writing is more of a condensed version of the King/King novel, it’s still well-done and certainly captures the horror and intensity of the original. I’ll continue to read subsequent volumes in this series.

I received an eARC courtesy of IDW Publishing via Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

Are you looking for a book to leave you confused, depressed and believing that 99% of men are just a bunch of a##@*$*@? Well, then this is the book for you!

In short, I did not enjoy this at all, but I am clearly not the target audience. To be honest, even the artwork was not style either.

This adaptation is brilliant - the only reason it’s a four is as a comic book fan, I’m not a particularly big fan of the illustrations! But is it worth buying and reading… bet your arse it is, I also was a fan of the novel, so great to go back into that world!

Man, I've waited a long time for this to appear in hardback, and let me say it's been absolutely worth the wait. How this has been condensed deserves to be applauded. It must've been a nightmare to chop it up into a ten part comic. Rio Youers has done a terrific job, truly.
Now, let me give praise to everyone else involved, because it's deserved.
Obviously, I have to say Stephen King and Owen King have written a brilliant story here. I listened to the audiobook when it came out and Marin Ireland's narration was outstanding. It really brought the book to life. I highly recommend it.
In truth, though, I'd say the comic book edition enhances it even further.
Alison Sampson's artwork is fantastic. Page by page her attention to detail just blew me away.
Others involved: Triona Tree Farrell for colours, Christa Miesner and Valerie Lopez for letters brought everything together beautifully.
Massively impressed by this effort from everyone involved.
As far as I'm aware, this edition also includes all the artwork for the alternative comic editions that came out, too.
I remember seeing them as they were coming out.
The covers are individually placed at the back of this book.
This is a collector's treat.
Worth every penny.
The only problem is the huge wait for Vol 2.

Anyway, this is an easy five stars from me.

---------------

2nd read opinion.

Yep, still admiring this effort. Lots of neat tricks that make this huge project work in such a a small space. Single images and captions that create a full scene experience. Things like the use of cell phones to convey information. Photographs.

Right... Vol.2 here we go...

Thank you to NetGalley and IDW Publishing for an advanced digital copy.

This was a tough one. The story is great but is incredibly difficult to follow. To be fair, I have not read the novel that this graphic novel is based. That may be where the issue lies. However, I don’t think I should need to read the novel to understand this since they are separate entities. This graphic novel switches back and forth between characters so much and is rather confusing.

The illustrations are phenomenal and I would love to see the full-color version when this is released. I was really impressed by that.

I think I might revisit this graphic novel after reading the original source material since it is a very interesting concept. However, this was just too confusing to follow and I can’t recommend it unless you’ve read the book.

Solid 3.5 stars

I think that my biggest problem with this book is the blatant misogyny. I’m sure that that’s something that will be addressed as the story unfolds but for now with just being one volume, it’s so stomach turning. The artwork was beautiful and I actually think that the overall story is gonna be very very interesting. But I think I actually might want to pick up the full length novel. Reading it serialized like this without all of the volumes I don’t think it’s gonna be the best way for me to and intake the story.

TW: Rape, Assault, Murder, Burning to death, murder of a child

Full disclosure, I'm not a huge fan of Stephen King's writing because he typically starts every sentence with a pronoun but I have enjoyed the stories. I figured I would give this graphic novel a chance when I saw it on NetGalley. Unfortunately, this book definitely wasn't for me. It's brutal and has a lot of triggers that are not for the faint of heart. The story itself was interesting but I fear that I need to read the actual book to understand really what was going on.

All in all, the graphic novel was okay. I will not continue on in the series nor do I have enough curiosity to pick up the book. I will say that the artwork is beautifully done and was one of the only reasons I kept reading.

I know King's stuff is always a lot, but this was truly A Lot. Like, I wanted to know what was gonna happen but I was also kinda nauseas the whole time, not to mention I think the way it tried to 'handle' gender fell super flat. Not a huge fan of the artwork, either.
