While I still find this story to be interesting, the author is kinda losing me with the insta love and the unbelievable circumstances especially pertaining to matters of national security. I liked this book the least of the series so far but there are 2 more to go hopefully it gets better..

2.5 stars I enjoyed the progression of the dragon storyline with the prophecy coming to life and I was glad that they FINALLY figured out who the stupid man eater was. I also liked Valentine but I didn’t really care for Hazel much at all. She spent a couple of months hanging out with a guy when she was 16. He told her he loved her then disappeared so she decides to never have a serious relationship in her life again. Ever. Fastforward 3 years and she meets a sweet guy they talk for hours and share a kiss and she really connects with him – so much so that she actually fell in love with him after the kiss (don’t even get me started on the whole insta love thing) so naturally she brushes him off and decides never to see him again then runs off and sleeps with her ex even knowing her ex is still in love with her and wants more. Basically Hazel is an emotionally stunted user and not at all worthy of Val or of being Queen.

Well... this was not one my favorite book in this series. I quite enjoy reading this series. It’s a quick read, mostly 170 pages, interesting and there’s always something happening or about to happen.
But, Hazel annoyed me a lot!! I hated how she acted like everyone had to tell her everything, even though a war was almost happening on top of everything else, including her brother missing. Please, she acted as the center of everything. She didn’t deserve to know anything, not until the people involved felt ready to do that.
Loved seeing Sid and Aspen again, also, that cliffhanger? Amazing!!!! I can’t wait to read the next book.

This story follows Aspen' sister: Hazel along with her bonded: Val. They meet on a plane, and although she hates dragon's because that's the thing humans just do... she bonds with him. So naturally, they wait until the very end of the book to tell her she's in love with a dragon. In the meantime, Hazel and Aspens' brother has gone missing, and their parents are so convinced he is dead. They begin planning his funeral. People say they saw him in California, buy... no way... it can't be him. His car was at home! Plot holes galore. Nonetheless, this was a lot more fun to read than the last two, even if the human eating dragon was obvious, as was the identity of the third king! Congrats! I'm reluctantly giving this one 4 stars! If all of the problems with this story keep me up any longer, though, I might drop it back down to 3.5. (Which in the Goodreads world is just a three.)

I'm giving it one star and that's generous. The series ground to an absolute stop in this book as far as I am concerned. There was so much wrong with this book.

It was very heavily cliched, but so were the others. I was okay with that. The other books have been as well, but that's the best that I can say about it.

Why do I hate it? The timing is gone. The feel of the previous novels is gone. The characters' are hard to follow and their reactions are just stupid. The predictability is way too evident. The story backtracks without explanation. There are so many inconsistencies. Here are some examples

1. The timing is gone.
There were 2 books in which Aspen and Obsidian got together. Aspen's hang-up with Obsidian was he looked like the guy that raped her. Other than his looks they were instantly a perfect match.
She has a lot to learn and rather than explaining anything to her they build suspense and create a decent plot device before telling her and us about the Queens being human. Then everything is happy again, because of course Aspen, who loves Dragons, can complete the required tests.

Book 3. Val and Hazel have to get together. They meet on a plane but fall madly in love. It's contrived but whatever. His goal is to win Hazel over. Her objections. She's been hurt and doesn't want to love again, she's looking for her lost brother, and she absolutely hates dragons. Three very good reasons to not get into a relationship. These could have been solved book by book. Instead, the author decides to screw the fact that she was hurt and the dragon/boy that hurt her live in the same house as her 'love interest', but she didn't love him anyway. Then Rowan. She loves him and wants to look for him until she has to be apart from her lover. She didn't really love Rowan in the face of a new boyfriend. She hates Dragons until she finds out that he's a Dragon and that he's been lying to her. She's angry for all of 3 minutes and then it's all happy happy.

2. The feeling of the other books is gone.
The first two books. People matter, life matters, the world matters. They go to school. They are awkward they have friends and a job.

Book 3. Aspen and Obsidian are perfect. They have to do nothing in life other than hold each other and look lovey. No job, no mention of school. Theo's girlfriend breaks up with them so they have to have no interaction with any non-Dragons other than her parents and a new plot twist Paul. There is no connection to anything anymore.

3. The character's reactions are stupid.
I already mentioned above but I'll mention again. They have no human roots any longer.
Hazel should have been more concerned with Rowan. She is only interested in Rowan when she doesn't have a date with Paul/Val. She goes to California and then comes back early because Val says to, rather than staying and exploring by herself. If she wasn't willing to be alone, why fly back from Hawaii? When she learns about Theo being part of the household, why keep going back? When she learns about the Dragons, why does the reaction only last a couple of hours? Why does she forgive him so quickly? Why does she agree to be a Dragon Queen knowing she hates Dragons? Why does she bring Runa with her and Val? How does she not react worst about Theo being the human killer? Why with her 1 semester of school does she track down information and look into things that the adults haven't looked at? If she loves Val so much why does she sleep with Paul? Why does she accept things so easily? Who is this human that has no actual emotions other than a libido?

Vals reactions are not much better. He seems like he can only do 3 three things. Exactly what Sid tells him, eat, and be a lover.

Predictability:
There has been nothing that's not predictable. We knew who the Human killer was. We knew who the other 2 'Kings' were because they have books named after them. We knew where Rowan was. We knew who Vals' Queen would be. We are not stupid but we are left bread crumbs then the author decides, nope too vague. I'll light the path for you with sparklers. Nope. Still too vague. Here let me take your hand and lead you there.

Back Tracks
The part that bothers me is at the end of book 2. I have to tell my parents that "I'm the Queen of the Dragons". End of Book 3. I guess we have to tell our parents that "we're Queen of the Dragons."

Inconsistencies:
Aspen was tested because they wanted to make sure they have a strong Queen. Now they are not testing any more Queens? What happens if Obsidian dies? The Dragons are okay with a Queen that hates Dragons?

When Skye flew in no one noticed her. There were no Dragons that blocked her, no messager stating that the 'King' was coming. She turned black but other than that they still look the same. Obsidian lived with Skye for over 100 years he should know her face even if it's changed color.

Paul is not that old. He should not have as much importance in the military as he does. He has authority to spend his time with Hazel, he has command over a troop, he has super-secret guns, etc.

The funeral for Rowan just either gets canceled or forgotten about. It's never mentioned once she comes back.

There are thousands of Dragons in the park. How can that be? How is it they have not completely emptied the park of food? 200 maybe, but thousands? It never mentions that there are nearly that many dragons in the world, let alone of one race in one area.

Why did they all turn human? Someone shot their king, shouldn't they be looking for and taking revenge on his behalf?

There is so much more about this book that bothers me, but I don't have the heart to write any more it makes me sad that I wasted that much time on a book. I have the other 2 so I will finish them, but this series is going downhill fast.

The third book in The Dragon King series is just as appealing and entertaining as the first two. It can be read as a stand alone but you will get a better understanding and more from it if you read the books in order. This book has lots going on, the second Dragon King must find his queen, the hunt for the killer continues, war with humans is looming on the horizon, will the third King emerge and what of the prophesy? The story is well written, has humour, action, intrigue, romance and enough twists to keep you hooked. I received this book from the author at no cost in exchange for an honest review

Another good read

Whilst I enjoyed the story I did find it a little predictable and full of unbelievable coincidences.

I'll finish the series and hope book 4 is a little better in the storyline

This story is of Val finding his way as a king and finding his queen. I like that the story of Val falling for his queen, and she for him, is different than Aspen's. It would have been easy to repeat the same story, but it's different.

This book was just ok. Meh. To be honest, the only reason why I continued it was because it had Aspen and Sid in it otherwise I wouldn't have read it at all. First, I thought it was about stinkin time that Theo got the gruesome ending he deserved, second, I adore Runa! She is so funny and thirdly, I felt absolutely no connection between Val and Hazel. Hazel was a little slut actually. Just my opinion but that girl had sex with any guy she so chooses AND she had sex with her ex-boyfriend after she got the "mark" on her ankle (from Val). What??!! Although she didn't accept the love thing at that point she wanted to get Val out of her head so by having sex with another man she thought that was ok? Ugh....I was so disgusted! So what if Val thought she was strong enough to be his queen. He wasn't thinking straight anyway. She was still selfish and self centered. I'm hoping now that Skye and Rowan came back at the end of the book, the 4th book will be a lot better!

I loved this book! The series just keeps getting better!

Valentine has led a very sheltered life in Hawaii when he finds out that he is a dragon king. His main goal is to find his Queen so he come into his full powers for the impending war.

Hazel has vowed to never get involved in another committed relationship, but will that change when she meets Val?

I loved the character development, the world building, and writing style. One of the best compliments I can give a book in a series is to say "I can't wait for the next book" and I can definitely say that about this book!

The saga continues and it is just as well developed as the first two books, is a little more predictable by design, due to the clues given. Even though Hazel is not a charismatic character as Aspen is, is nice to see the transformation her character experiences when she is healed of her demons and is also amazing to see Val’s growth. I love that as the story grows you get to see the developments on the characters previously introduced and the whole is awesome. I am really enjoy “this new to me” author.

Not as good as the first two.

I really dislike Hazel and I feel like the only good thing about her aside from her ability to now help Val is that she's got two awesome siblings. I get that she's been hurt in the past but that is no reason to be crass with other people's feelings. She doesn't deserve a great and sweet guy like Val. So glad Sid and Aspen were in this one. I love, love, love Runa. I feel like a lot of this was rushed and could have been done a little better. I can't wait for the next one!

I gave this two stars because I like the overall story and I liked Valentine. But I honestly could not rate it any higher because I could not stand Hazel. In fact I can say pretty confidently that I hated her. She doesn’t deserve Val. And she definitely shouldn’t be a queen of the dragons. She ruined the book for me. She was selfish and judgmental and nosy and a bit of a know it all. I found no redeeming qualities in her.

Nothing spectacular and worthy... yet I’m still going to continue. Not because of Val and Hazel, but because I’m still curious about Rowen and Skye. I’m hoping for something more then the temptation and resistance monologues that seemed to be on loop in Hazel’s head. Fingers crossed the next is better.

That ending.....

That was an unexpected ending! What are the odds Hazel and Aspen both fall in love with dragon kings?! Just wait. Finally the human killer is revealed but of course there has to be someone pulling the strings. Entertaining book.

Five books total. The premise to this story of three dragons fated to be queens with their was intriguing. I did enjoy these books but I found by the end I was becoming bored worth the story that not a lot differed from each book and that the characters didn’t seem to grow.

Warning, angry rant spoilers: I was listening to the audio version. The narrator is great, but there were parts that probably had been better if read. I don't know how to use good read notes because I made quite a few while listening. For one, I thought it was rather poopy the way they were keeping Hazel out of every cryptic conversation. Only the readers would know what was going on. Viewing from her pov, I could see how angry she would be about everything going on around her. I kind of really hated that the parents were quick to call their son dead. It's obvious the parents arnt much involved with their kids lives, but at this point of everything it's better that way. Two. Her hate for dragons stays super strong through the whole book. She's a very toxic human being to be dubbed a queen. She was so mad to find he was a dragon she wanted to sleep with another guy. The same day. In comparison to her sister, she even said as much as she has no devotion to dragons. Just to the man she didn't know she really wanted to be committed to. I gave her benefits to being left out, but her personality gave her no deeming qualities not only to be his mate, but to be queen. Three. The way she found out was ridiculous. This was the part that would have been better read than listened to. It needed way more emphasis on being more of a crisis of almost losing a living being. She had no care at all that what was before her was bleeding to death and dying before her eyes. The way she was told about everything all at once was like they stood still in time to say, yeah sorry we didn't tell you, but right now why are we explaining this during a moment of death scene. It was like they were on a smoke break during the crisis, and she was the victim from being left out. While someone was dying. Four. She went to the guy that caused the horrific thing and acted like it was no big deal and she just wanted to eff the guy to keep the fact out what was going on didn't mean a thing. Like how people are tone deaf when killing animals. Yeah, it's done. Let's go eat. My sister whom I love means nothing to me right now. They lied to me by not telling me anything. There was no lie, it just hadn't been said. It couldn't have been said. If she had the knowledge she would have blasted it without realizing it for how much she hated dragons. Five. She only thinks she loves Val from one kiss. She doesn't understand the attraction she put herself in. She wanted to blame him when it was her. She suddenly wants to be a part of his life unconditionally because of the fact she knew she couldn't have any more open relationships? Again, she still hates rhe dragons. Even with her being queen. Aspen is too eager to accept her sister into something she knew her sister would never involve herself with. Six. The whole book that has Hazel as the main character began reasonably understandable of why her behavior made sense. The farther the book went on, she just was not it. She wasn't there. She shouldn't have stayed involved because she's not right to be queen of the things she will have power over. When you think back on all the trials Aspen went through, she would not have passed. That's a fact. Sorry, the book made me angry.

Tecnicamente solo i draghi reali possono mutare forma.

As predicted, I read Valentine from start to finish within a couple hours. You guys, I can’t stop until I finish this series. Seriously. I mean, it helps that the books aren’t super super long. Valentine comes in at 204 pages. So this is definitely something you can read through quickly!

My suspicions were confirmed with several things with this book. Which I’m glad I was right but it still didn’t change how sad it was! You’ll see what I mean obviously 😉

Okay, and this is sort of off topic in regards to reviewing this story as it’s more like..reviewing a review I read about this book. Typically, I avoid reviews of books I’m reading because I don’t like it to color my own opinion. That seems kind of silly as I write reviews myself, but just bear with me for a moment..
When I write a review here, sometimes I see a review on accident and usually will just avert my eyes and keep on going, but for some reason this one particular review just grabbed me and I couldn’t look away. It wasn’t exactly a negative review, but it just sort of bugged me and I haven’t been able to put it out of my head.
This particular review stated that this book was predictable and juvenile and pointed out all these different things (that I think would kind of spoil things, so I won’t mention them) that seemed so unlikely because of character ages. My thoughts?
First – this is a work of fiction.
Second – this is a work of fiction with TEENAGERS as our main characters.
Third – we’ve all been teenagers before so don’t tell me you didn’t feel as strongly as their feelings are described, because you’d be lying through your teeth.

Okay so back to my own review now! 😉

I wish we had more of Valentine’s story before he met Hazel on the plane, but it is what it is! I’m not going to focus on things that didn’t happen, but instead focus on the things I liked. Hazel is very up front with how she feels about dragons. Obviously this is a problem, because uhh hello, Valentine is our second Dragon King!

I was worried how things were going to go down with that complication but I think it was done nicely at the end. And speaking of the end..

Get ready for a shock! Maybe you figured it out or guessed but wasn’t sure like I did, but still..get ready! 😉 And with that..I’m off to start the next part of this series!

🐲I purchased the box set via audible
🐲did the same review for each book
🐲fantasy romance
🐲YA
🐲 3.5 star rating

This is the first Kimberly Loth books I’ve read/listened to, I enjoyed the storyline very much.

Each book must be read in order, even though books 3 and 4 are based around the other Kings relationships with their romantic counterpart, as the story continues from the previous book.

Each relationship has its own trials and tribulations to overcome but in the mean time they are fighting a war with dragons that wish to take over the world and burn everything in their wake.

The books are written well and are quite fast paced. The characters are relatable and easy to fall in love with. I was particular sad with the last book and kept hoping something would happen to alter the losses endured.

Now for the reason behind my rating:
- it was a little too easy to read between the lines, had these books been any longer I would have lost interest because it seemed you could pick out what was going to happen (a number of times I was like “I knew it!”
- because I listened to the audible versions I really had a dislike for the way Rowan was portrayed by the actors performance and made him sound like a five year old

Spoiler-Free Review: Valentine (The Dragon Kings Chronicles #3) by Kimberly Loth
Valentine continues the Dragon Kings Chronicles with a compelling blend of romance, fantasy, and high-stakes intrigue. Kimberly Loth expands the dragon-shifter world while deepening the emotional and romantic arcs of her characters, making this installment both thrilling and heartfelt.
The romance is intense and well-developed, with chemistry balanced by emotional depth and trust-building. The characters face personal and external challenges that strengthen their connection, while the world-building introduces new conflicts, alliances, and layers of intrigue that keep the story engaging.
This book is perfect for fans of paranormal romance with dragons, adventure, and slow-burn, emotionally charged love stories. Valentine is an immersive continuation of the series that combines fantasy, passion, and meaningful character growth. 🐉💖

sweet charming hero, neurotic heroine YA fantasy fiction

This is the third book in a series which continues the arc of a future war between the species. Valentine is Damien’s son, which you need to read the first two books to truly understand this book. All the characters are connected. Hazel is Aspens big sister in school in Hawaii. Val is on a flight from Hawaii to Gardenier Montana where Hazel is headed to help search for her missing brother. They have a meet cute. Hazel is very disengaged with relationships and uses her sexuality to get what she wants. Val is newly human and Hazel teaches him about human life without knowing he is a dragon. The mysteries come to a conclusion at the end. However if you wish to know what happened to Rowan read the next book.

I loved the first two books; Obsidian, and Aspen. Aspen is such a kick butt, takes no nonsense, strong, and loyal gal, and she defends Sid and all dragons. Hazel is nowhere near as strong and loyal, as her sister Aspen. Val is sweet, kind and new to the whole human thing, as he never expected to become a king. Val was not a royal dragon, and never thought he would be able to transform into a human, and was totally not ready for this enormous responsibility. I was not a fan of Hazel, and think Valentine deserved a better queen. But all in all, this was a good book. I am looking forward to Skye's and Rowan's story.

I completely agree with other reviewers. The book is fine. The issue is with Hazel. Her only redeeming contribution to this series was to think that Rowan left with Skye. Also, maybe to provide a personal connection to the military. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But other than those two things…. She felt she had a right to know everything when she openly was against dragons. She really didn’t learn to accept them at all and still was made to be a queen. The testing was bogus at best because she only cares for Val.

My main question was did she ACTUALLY learn to accept them or just barely tolerate the dragons. 🐉
