Not so much a narration as a full theatrical performance and an excellent one at that. A vast array of male and female voices across the adult age range and some good accent work. I found a couple of the voices quite irritating (intentionally so I think) making me wish they were to be killed off. The sort of performance that the listener is immediately drawn into the story.
Meet Mike Kirby, star sign Aries, who is about to celebrate his fiftieth birthday in some style with a rocket display. These are not your run of the mill pyrotechnics though, because Mike is a billionaire. He is going to celebrate his birthday by blasting off into space in his own rocket, before safely returning to earth in time for the party he is holding. Truly a sight to behold because its also the weekend of an eclipse.
Leo Moon is a young man who gave up his university studies to be the manager (and general dogsbody) of his mother, the renowned astrologer, to the stars Eleanor Moon. Eleanor is a woman Mike Kirby places great faith in, and he values her opinion on the influences of the stars and planets on his business decisions and personal choices. Both she and Leo are invited to the weekend bash, which is being held on Mike’s private island, off the coat of Ireland. Leo’s friend the freelance journalist Karen Penn is also tagging along in the search of a story. It promises to be a weekend to remember…
The plot is wonderfully ludicrous, fittingly so because the lives of billionaires have no terms of reference to the average listener. There are so many billionaires entering the space travel business that is ‘old hat’. Indeed, it’s almost at the prerequisite stage of needing to have a rocket to be a proper billionaire; private jets are so common and for little people. They are also the kind of people open to more unusual suggestions, so why not be guided by the stars, after all he is shooting for them.
The situation that unfolds is a variation of the classic country house mystery updated for the 2020’s. Even the motive for murder falls within the theme, so if you love the golden age you are going to enjoy this story. This type of story calls out for a varied cast of interesting characters, with the occasional outrageous one as a bonus, and we are indulged here.
Leo wants life to be straightforward, he even takes Steve Job’s lead when it comes to dressing, reducing the number of decisions to be made each day. He lives on a houseboat at Brighton and loves surfing as well as astrology. He’s great at reading signs but less so people, finding women very confusing. Perhaps this is throwback to his boarding school days, either way it leads to frustration in the fairer sex.
Eleanor is forthright and certain in her abilities even though she dresses like a minor character from Dallas or Dynasty, favouring 1980s power suits and shoulder pads. Her true colours are displayed by the appearance of Mystic Marjory, ‘that fraud’. Marjory claims to commune with the spirits, though they mainly seem to be the ones in a bottle and consumed with very little mixer. Still, she says her spirit guides Freddie and Will (Mercury and Shakespeare) will guide her. The interaction between the two bring out some great humour.
With this type of story we must look to the staff, in the true ‘the butler did it’ spirit. Here we have useless but friendly Brummie housekeeper Alice and the slightly peculiar island manager Julian to divert the reader’s attention.
It’s a gentle satire on wealth, the super-rich with their way of life and attitudes. Most of all though, it is entertaining and amusing listen and a great way to pass a few hours.
I absolutely loved the concept of this one! I love astrology and anything to do with star signs, ,horoscopes and reading charts etc - not that I'm a full on believer....but I find it totally fascinating - so just had to grab this book!
The storyline was a standard murder mystery. After arriving on Kirby island to witness the billionaire's 50th birthday celebrations - things don't quite go to plan and there's a mystery to solve and when his wife, Renee is later found dead, everyone is under suspicion!
Although a fairly standard plotline, I loved that there was just so much going on around the main storyline. There were lots of clues to follow with some great twists and turns within. But there was also some madcap behaviour going on around the periphery!
The characters were amazing and are what made this such a great read for me!
I loved the irony of having Leo and his Mum, both astrologers, well renowned and trusted for their reading of charts and predicting things in relationships and business etc - and then Marjorie, who was a classic Mystic Meg type of character.
I also found it hilarious that neither Marjorie nor Helena had any input to the investigations going on around them! Totally oblivious!
Leo and Karen were a brilliant team! Leo being obsessed with what the stars were telling him about the case and Karen totally dismissing it all and being the logical half of the team - but together they followed all the clues to work out this complex case.
The character dynamics worked perfectly. There was lots of banter and although the investigation narrative was fairly serious - it was the dollops of humour throughout that made this so unique. Oh! and let's not forget Ursa Minor, Helena's ultra aloof and grumpy cat! 🥰
A super quick read which had me hooked from the start - I loved this and really hope there will be lots more books in the series. Am looking forward to seeing what Leo and Karen get up to in their next adventure.
Astrologer Leo Moon, Leo’s journalist friend Karen and his mother Helena have been invited to Kirby Island to celebrate the 50th birthday of billionaire Mike Kirby. Not only is there a birthday to celebrate but at the same time there is also a Blood Moon Eclipse taking place and a rocket launch. But when the rocket launch doesn’t go as planned leaving someone in a coma and later on another guest is found dead it’s up to Leo to find the truth.
The storyline was unique and it was the mix of astrology and murder mystery that made me want to listen to this book because I love both of those topics. Kirby Island did sound very cool, especially because it is a remote island with a castle but Leo gets more than he bargained for because instead of a luxury break events start to take a deadly turn. Although there are only a small number of people on the island it was difficult to trust anyone and Leo discovers this very quickly. Initially when the rocket is launched it appears that an accident has taken place but there’s actually something more sinister hiding behind that event and Leo quickly realises that there may be a murderer on the loose. But it’s not clear who the murderer might be as the motive is unclear so everyone is a suspect. When the culprit and their motive were revealed I was very surprised.
I really liked all of the characters because they were a cast of eccentric and colourful characters where no two characters were the same. Each character stood out in their own right especially Leo’s mother Helena. I did feel bad for Leo because it is clear that he is very much living in the shadows of his famous astrologer mother and doesn’t get the credit he deserves. But he doesn’t mind her having the limelight because it makes her happy. The connection between Leo and Karen was an interesting one because I think there may be something more between them than friendship so I hope this is explored further in another book.
If you like astrology and murder mysteries then this is definitely worth a listen.
A wonderfully diverse cast of people arrive at Kirby Island, owned by Aries billionaire Mike Kirby, to watch the first launch of his rocket on his 50th birthday. There’s Helena Moon, Mike’s personal and famous astrologer, her son Leo Moon who supports her in lots of ways including reading the charts, and her pampered cat, Ursa Minor, together with Leo’s New York journalist friend Karen. Then there’s Mike’s wife Renee (glamorous former model and now hoping to break into the music business), her sister Rachel (the quieter more business-like sibling) and Rachel’s husband Neil who is also Mike’s best friend and business partner, along with Mike’s new (and scantily clad) PA Suzy, housekeeper Alice, and island security manager Julian. Oh, and at Mike’s insistence, there’s also Mystic Marjorie who is never far from a bottle and her spirit guides Will Shakespeare and Freddie Mercury. What could possibly go wrong? As the bickering and back-biting begins almost immediately and Leo wishes he was back on his lovely peaceful boat, it’s not long before the launch goes up in a puff of smoke, Mike is hospitalised and one of the guests is murdered. Stuck on the island, will Leo and Karen find the truth written in the stars or a more earthly explanation? Karen and Leo make a brilliant sleuthing team in this fun and absorbing story. The locked room type scenario is richly enhanced by the hilarious personalities of some of the characters, and their various shady antics certainly added to the mystery surrounding the murder. Narrator Oliver Chris does a terrific job of the monumental task of portraying all these different characters and their accents. I only wish Ursa Minor had been given a speaking part too! I do hope there will be more Leo Moon stories.
