Miranda Vincent thought East Syracuse was the perfect place to sort out her life. A host of friends, both old and new, welcomed Miranda back to the community where she grew up. She landed a job in the mail room at Crane Community College and the perfect apartment.
Life is starting to look up for Miranda except for one major issue. Her new coworker, Hadley Mitchell, thought Miranda’s new job should have been hers and Hadley aims to cancel Miranda’s stamp. When Hadley turns up dead, all eyes are on Miranda.
Can Miranda figure out who killed Hadley and deliver justice? Or will she find herself in a permanent hold?

I was excited to read this book as it was written by someone who is in a Goodreads group with me. Sometimes I really do wish Goodreads let us did half star because if I’m being honest, I would’ve done more of a 4 1/2 star. It has all the details you want in a cozy mystery, murder, relatable characters, a story that hooks you in. Miranda is a likable character. Due to a cheating ex, she moves back to her hometown. Her childhood friends still live there and she meets some new friends within the process. She ends up saving a jack Russell terrier that she names Georgie. And who does not like a book with a dog. I like how realistic the characters are Miranda makes me think of myself someone who loves to read mysteries and watches crime shows, and in the back of your head you’re thinking I could do this too when reality hits and you’re trying to clear your name I’m sure you realize it is not as easy as television or books make it seem . Her fellow staff is murdered and it is not someone Miranda gets along with someone that holds a vendetta for Miranda getting the job they wanted. Because Miranda finds the body she feels people may think she is guilty. I will be honest there is another mystery within the series that hooked me more, and I really can’t wait to get that. Mystery solved. Miranda does fall for the school security officer cop who is a real cop. Officer Valenti this is an interesting relationship. Overall, I think it is a great book. Hooks you in and I can’t wait to read the next one.
I really enjoyed this start to a new series and an author I haven't read before. Miranda is still nursing a broken heart and moves back to where she grew up taking a job working in the mail room at the college. When her co-worker who she doesn't get along with ends up dead, Miranda becomes a suspect and decides to find out who the true murderer is. I really like Miranda and her friends Ted who runs the coffee shop, Faye and Beth, and Carmen the war vet who was injured. They all round out the book and hasten to add I also love the love interest Officer Valenti who works at the college as well.
The story line was very well written and though I had an inkling who the murderer was fairly early on I had to keep turning the pages to see what else would happen. I also like the mystery around the second murder that had happened earlier and I hope that murder will be brought up in a later book.
Wonderful book with some great characters and very well written.
I love this book, in fact, I wish I could move to East Syracuse where it takes place. Miranda is great and her group of friends are just as like-able, adventurous, and funny. I also enjoyed the unique drink recipes! Harper had me guessing until the very end about who committed the murder. This is a “cozy mystery” with twists and turns that are fun to figure out. They all make sense and it is well worth reading!!! I am anticipating the next book in the series- it cannot be soon enough!!!
What a fun book and start to this series. Miranda and her friends are quite the bunch. Though she was not the great detective, she can get herself caught in the most craziest positions. The drinks Miranda and Carmen indulge in, sound delicious and the names are hilarious are well. I like all the characters and the crime solving as well. Now as for the possible love interest will have me reading more of this series.
You know that uncomfortable feeling of getting a job that a current employee feels they should have gotten? Miranda was excited to get a job in the mail room, but Hadley was mad, really mad. Snotty and mean too. She was sure she was a shoo-in, then they hired Miranda, and she wasn’t even connected to Crane Community College. When things didn’t work out her way, Hadley did everything possible to undermine Miranda. Miranda was visibly aggravated about Haley and even though she shouldn’t have, she might have complained loudly to a lot of people. Then, when you’re found leaning over the body, it just doesn’t look good.
This is a quick, easy-to-read cozy. It’s a good mystery, and one of the reasons I enjoyed it the most was L. M. Harper’s characters. Well, maybe I didn’t like snotty Hayley but then again that’s good character definition too:)
This is your typical cozy with what I’ll call all the normal elements…an amateur sleuth, someone suffering from a love-life trauma, a handsome cop, a dead body, etc. It is not, however, a carbon copy of other cozies. It has dear friends, an adorable pet, a few more twists and turns, and it does leave you wondering who the bad guy/girl might be until the end.
A fun read. Looks like L.M. Harper only has one other book. Hope she writes some more.
Fun new cozy series set at a community college. The main character is trying to get her life together back in her hometown; she finds a job she likes, a fantastic apartment, and an adorable rescue dog… and she gets accused of murder! Love the characters and the setting!
