The last thing in the world she needed was to be stuck on a murder trial for some mafia capo. All she wanted to do was hear the facts and get this all over with, so she could get back to rebuilding her family’s crumbling antique business.
Until she puts some pieces together that has her not only thinking that Cosimo Costa had done something for the greater good, but that she couldn’t let him go to jail for it.
She had no regrets about deadlocking the jury until someone involved with the trial started to come after her.
And the only person she had to turn to for help was the man she’d saved from life behind bars…
* Each book in this series can be read as a standalone *
Jessica Gadziala is a USA Today bestselling author who lives in rural New Jersey with her parrots, dogs, and an ever-growing collection of houseplants. A lifelong dreamer, she’s been writing stories since childhood and published her first book in 2015. When not at her desk, she’s usually feeding backyard birds, rewatching crime dramas, period pieces, and 90s supernatural TV shows, or adding to her towering stacks of unread books.
Cosimo had a rough time coming up in life, with being abuse by his father. Due to this fact he had an inability to let anyone get too close to him….. he also had somewhat of a coldness about him, and detachment about him as well………. But that didn’t stop him from Saving a damsel in distress. Cosimo Thought that he was a goner, that he was definitely going to be convicted of murder. So, he shut everyone out of his life
He could not lie how happy he was once he realized someone on his jury had caused A hung jury, Ultimately, setting him free. ……. He didn’t realize how much he might pay for that later once that person had come to Collect on that Debt.
Halle ran her family’s Antique business. And she couldn’t afford to be forced into Jury duty, day in and day out, for weeks, possibly months, all to get paid, what, pennies a day? For the life of her she couldn’t find her way out of serving Jury duty……… Something flipped a switch in her….. And before she knew it , she put his case in Deadlock.
.I just loved Cosimo & Halle’s story and their journey to get to the right place where they needed to be…… I am not saying their journey was easy or that they didn’t have their fair share of twist and turns along the way… The important thing was that they made it there together………… As always, I look forward to the epilog, and of course Jessica did a spectacular job on that……… Keep up the good work, lady. (Jessica Gadziala )
Cosimo Costa is accused of murdering a man. Halle Whitlock is on the jury, and it is because of her, that Cosimo gets away with murder. Now, the dead man's brother are chasing Halle, beating her grandfather. Halle goes to Cosimo for help.
I liked Lauren and Miko, hope to read more about them. Still don't know with whom Vega married. But I guess the next book will be about Renzo Lombardi and Lore, and don't you forget about Anthony and Silvano.
It started good, but more to the end, I thought the characters became childish. I like reading about the Costa family, it's always good reading about the old characters, and I guess that's why I enjoy reading this series, but the quality isn't the same.
A Juror x Defendant romance was a pairing I didn’t know I needed, but I did, I needed it !! Now I need more !!! Maybe a Lawyer x Defendant or a Judge x Lawyer or a Defendant’s Lawyer x Prosecutor or a Stenographer and a Defendant, who fall in love through the words she transcribes throughout the court case. I will admit this one is more niche… but can someone please write these. I’ll read them all !!
The book begins with the FMC (Juror) on a Jury for an alleged murder case and the MMC (Defendant) being accused of murder. They don’t interact during the trial, but the snowball effect after it brings them together.
I liked the opposites attract route the story went down. The MMC was domineering and very in control at all times, but also very protective of the people that he loved and held a strict moral code. I don’t think this moral code included murder, but murder with a really good reason is okay 😅
The FMC was super personable and it didn’t feel like she was struggling to fit into his world. I’ve always liked the ‘two worlds collide’ storyline in mafia books and the FMC's first weapon of choice being a frying pan showed she could hold her own. Very Rapunzel.
Sidenote:- I LOVED the interconnected naming of this series and the covers are not some random shirtless man that I can never imagine as the MMC 🙏🙏🙏
A lot of the scenes made it very easy to picture the characters and the dressing room scene was just 🔥🚒🔥🚒. This scene didn’t help me picture the characters really, but it deserves a mention.
I do have some negative points that might only apply to me, but I thought I’d mention them anyway.
- The MMC can be slightly oblivious in some situations and it got a little frustrating, but when you read his backstory it did make more sense. There is some heavy sh*t in this book and the trauma bonding is real.
- It’s a Dual pov, but they are both on the same timeline. So you have her POV and then in the next chapter, you go back in time to get his POV at that time as well. I don’t know if that was necessarily always needed, as it felt like things were told twice. However, sometimes I wanted his perspective on a situation.
- I would also say the resolution of the main plot twist felt a little anti-climactic. Maybe I wanted a more action-orientated grand finale. I mean it was sweet how it ended, but I expected a little more. Also, what happened to Venezio? Where did the man go?
I did really enjoy this book though and it didn’t feel like it followed the average mafia storyline. It was a new take. Despite having small pet peeves, I read it in one sitting and struggled to put it down. 4 ⭐️
Do you like mafia romances? Then you should read this book. A great, exciting, and action-packed story about the Costa Family's member Cosimo.
Yes, the one and only, hard to read and even harder to like capo of the family. He is not only irritating and annoyingly unfriendly. Ok, most of the time, he's an a$$hole 🤣 He also doesn't understand how to deal with people without them getting offended. He doesn't understand the emotions other people have because his emotions were beaten out of him as a child. Sounds hard, but it is rather the norm in the old school mafia world. And despite all that, he is not the cold murderer like his father tried to raise him to be. He's not a sunshine either 😂
Halle is a great smart woman with only one plan for the future. Repair as good as possible the family legacy business and take care of her grandfather. She didn't choose that. This was imposed on her, but she likes that. She thrives in it and the only problem is she has too little sleep, not enough time and not enough money. Being on the jury was not in her plans either and she has not enough energy and time for this, but no one cares 😒 least of all the accused person, some mafia capo. Some very handsome and sexy man 😉
No, I'll not spoil the story, but I recommend reading it. It's exciting, gripping and full of dramatic events romance with a beautiful HEA and just the right amount of erotic scenes 😉🥰
After readinf Paulette's review i decided to give this a try and this turned out to be good. I really liked the plot, it was nice and refreshing and fast paced and wasnt repetative. characters were good and entertaining. it didnt have too much drama to exaggerate the plot. I loved Cossimo and Mari but would have loved to see more of them developing the relationship. I loved the long epilouge as well. overall I liked it
I did not know what to expect from our grumpy Cosimo but let's just say he blew me away.
Cosimo was definitely the closed off tough love, a whole lot of just stubborn and just am out right butthead. However you get these peeks of the man under that tough and what a DELIGHT he is. He pays attention, cares even when he doesn't want to and when he's wrong he owns it. Even of its blunt and with attitude. I love me a standoffish man with a soft side for that one person.
Halle oh my love. She just keeps having a hard time despite doing everything right. She's loyal to a fault. Loves hard and doesn't judge just because she doesn't fully understand. I loved her strength and her integrity. I found her to be super relatable and whilst not a super in your face character, she held her own and stood for what she needed to when it mattered the most.
These two had me with the crazy tension and chemistry. I loved the push and pull because it wasn't over teased and undersatisfying. Jessie knows how to string us along giving us just the right amount before the actual show to have us feeling all the feels. Lord, it was HAWT. funny thing about Cosimo and Halle wad that they weren't so different. They both had rough pasts and trauma. They were both super independent and both tried to fight the undeniable pull that was inevitable. Gah I loved them.
Their journey wasn't easy and full of their fair share of twists and turns but oh it was worth it. They had me locked in from the the start. I was invested in them and they did not disappoint.
Can we talk about the side characters?... The absolute gift that kept giving. Not only did we have OG favourites!. We also had a few very interesting new faces I can't wait to hear more from. We also had some interesting family developments that I was so happy for!!!. SIL! I need to know his story now.
But also Lauren. I love me a boss lady and she had that in spades!!!.
So many exciting possibilities. As per.. Jessie knocked it out the park.
I loved the premise and the heroine. I eventually warmed up to the hero too. I liked reading how he opened up with both heroine and his family. I also liked how the heroine did finally tell him that the way he was acting was hurtful and I genuinely believed he didn't think the situation through and acted on default so it was easy to forgive his missteps. I loved his brother who was hard to his face but took care of him behind the scenes. I wish to read his book too and perhaps see them have a more open relationship.
Cosimo ❤ Halle! This is the first book I've read from the Costa Family series and I'm sure it won't be the last! Their story was easy to read, somewhat funny, sweet, spicy and with a dose of action too. Just perfect!
Cosimo finds out the price of freedom is opening his heart.
Another solid story in the Costa family series. A strong women, morally grey but protective man, excellent secondary characters and a check in with the OG's.
I loved Halle, as soon we met her you could tell she was up to her eyes in life. Then as she made up her mind at the trial, she sets on a course to meet Cosimo Costa.
Now I have to say I found it quite hard to warm to Cos, mainly because of the way he treats Halle in certain situations. He is definitely Alpha, but a quite cold and detached way. We do get more insight into why as the book develops, which redeems him to a point, but I couldn't quite get 100% past it.
Looking forward to reading the next one, I really REALLY hope we get Ant's story soon!
I usually enjoy reading Jessica Gadziala but, this book was lacklustre and formulaic at best. Although the writing was spot on, the story lacked originality and spice. The character development was sorely lacking and the relationship between the hero and heroine had more depth in the epilogues than it did at any point during the story. Cosimo and Halle spent the majority of the book running away from each other. The author spent some time building up what could have been a suspenseful plot only to have the entire situation “fixed” by a supporting character during a two paragraph summation. Overall a disappointing read. 2.5 stars.
What a unique and interesting "meet cute". Absolutely loved the story and watching Cosimo grow and Halle find herself. It's got great tension and plenty spice. The side characters really shone in this story as well. Jessica always writes great side characters, but this time especially has me eagerly anticipating the next books in the series. And next generation drama thrown in there as well! This one's really building the anticipation.
Loved the change of scenery. Courtroom and Antique store. We knew from a previous book that Cosimo Costa had gotten himself in a bit of trouble..
One of the women on the jury causes a hung jury which sets Cosimo free. From here things get crazy. Not for Cosimo but for Halle who then runs to Cosimo for protection.
A quick note: I love this series and definitely recommend this book as well as the entire series. Cosimo and Halle are a really good match. I read this book in one sitting which just makes me look forward to future books in this series and more on Silvano and other characters.
I can always count on Jessica Gadziala for a fast paced, swoony, suspenseful read! I can also always count on her to introduce at least 3 new characters that I’m dying to have their own book lol
I really love this series but this was unfortunately my least favorite of them. Cosimo was a typical cold and detached jerk and Halle apparently had such little self respect that she just kept going back for more. I loved the beginning and end but the bulk of the story was lacking a man who knew what he wanted and fought his past issues for the woman who was deserving of that fight.
This MMC communicates like an ass but is the poster boy for - pay attention to his actions, not his words. So emotionally stunted. Consistent with his character, it takes three quarters of the book before he starts to break down his own psychology. Having a conversation with his mom,
“But she was being careful because she knew how hard it was to get me to talk about, well, fucking anything. It was just starting to occur to me how fucking sad that was.”
There's actually a sweet moment when he consciously practices empathy and imagines himself as someone else.
“My mind played the night before back, trying to see it through Halle’s eyes, something I wasn’t sure I’d ever really attempted to do before. And there I was. Dropping her hand. Turning her away to create distance. Not even letting the sweat dry before climbing off the bed. Then leaving her alone.”
It's simple to practice empathy when it's not bogged down by defensiveness or trying to justify actions or blaming someone else. I think this is one of the things this author does incredibly well - writing these thought processes that make it plausible that someone as dysfunctional as this guy could actually break a legacy of abuse and be a loving partner and parent.
That quote also is a perfect example of how spicy scenes are a way more effective plot device when they help build the relationship. He actually becomes more emotionally mature through physical intimacy with her.
This series keeps getting better. I love seeing past characters. I thought this relationship was so sweet. And the supporting cast was the best. I want more of the brother, the BFF, and the kid assistant to the mob boss.
Once again, it's an entertaining story. The vibes in the beginning (the action and coldness) weren't taken through the whole book. Once she moved in, it was like a different story (the romance part).
As always, it got me interested in all the upcoming books Lori, Mike, Sil, and Ser.
Having said that, the action part - for me - should have come from the hero, not the villan, so it maintains the mafia vibes.
3.5 stars , 4 starts because I missed Jessica's writing ✍️.
Some of the time, i did not like cos. He was giving me whiplash with his hot and cold. But finally getting the why to his actions, helped. I ended up loving this story. Halle needed more of a back bone I think.. some times I just wanted her to shove him away or yell at him. In the end, he did win me over. What an amazing story. Now I can only hope Miko gets his own book at some point. I hope sil also gets one, I love these guys. I love all of Jessica's books, she is by far one of my favorite authors
I loved everything about this story, from the first sentence to the last word.
Mafia trope but a little different where morality comes into play. Knowing a killer is a killer, but understanding his reason for the deed. And more, letting him walk free.
Halle is a juror where Cosimo is being tried for murder. She realizes he did commit the crime but decides to deadlock the jury to save him. However in doing so, she draws the attention of the victim's brothers and in turn needs Cos' help and protection
Interesting take, loved the storyline, eager to read all the books in this series.
Have said it before, and will say it again. Was never a mafia fan, never appealed to me at all, but that’s before Miss JG wrote one and now IM HOOKED!
Adored Cosimp and Halle’s story, if only we all had a 6’5 hot mafia man to rescue us!! Rough around the edges, you knew Halle would end up being his soft spot, I love how it happens to these mafia guys.
I really enjoyed this but my bos Cosimo didn’t grovel enough for my liking, and there were a few times were I felt things were getting very dragged out to the point I mostly skimmed (specifically any scene with just Cosimo and his family) and lastly the threat was handled so quickly it made laugh, but! Overall I did enjoy this I couldn’t stop reading it
Halle is my superhero!!!! Lol, she is something else. Casino well, he's an A$$ of epic proportions! However he sees the error of his ways, and man does he show some love! This is one of my new Favorites! Great job Jessica Gadziala! 😍😍😍
I love this series. In fact. It's one of my favorites from this author. I'm hoping with there being additional men that aren't paired up Syl, that he will get a book. Or even Mike and Venz, I'm very interested in their stories.
Great book. As always, my favors thing about this author are the way she breaks up the epilogue into segments, it gives the readers a chance to getting the whole picture of what the future looks like.
I discovered this author from the Navesink world and been a fan every sense. Excited to see what is coming next.
The Woman on the Jury is the seventh book in the Costa Family series by Jessica Gadziala. Although each book can technically be read as a standalone, you’ll have a more family feeling when seeing each of the secondary characters since many have already received their own books and you’ll be familiar with who they are.
Halle is an absolute sweetheart! She read that there was more to Cosimo than the brooding man in the courtroom and realized what had truly happened. Of course it made sense for her to seek him out when it was obvious who was after her and why.
Cosimo is a great leading man. Because of his upbringing with his abusive father, he wasn't sure how to act around Halle at first, but he learned and realized how much she meant to him. I really liked how his immediate response was to take care of Halle and make sure she was safe, although he didn't understand his reactions towards her at first.
I'm looking forward to getting Miko's book as well as Silvano's and Venezio's. It also looks like Renzo Lombardi may marry into the family after all.
Another great book from JG told from joint POVs with a happy ending including an endearing epilogue.
