The mystery of the past, the present, the future collide ... the answers can be found in the dunes.
Archaeologist River Amandez is drawn to Pelican Pointe to excavate and catalogue a long-buried Chumash settlement. She brings with her a not-so-pretty past and only one man in town can help. Brent Cody comes back to town to recover mentally and physically from a near-fatal attempt on his life. Together the two will lean on each other for strength and courage. And soon discover that the dunes hold answers to more than just the past.

River, Luke, and Brent United Psyches! 3.75***** Spoiler Alert¡
Dr. River Amandez, Native American Pueblo archaeologist, arrived in PP to lead the excavation of the newly discovered Chumash cave, canoes, artifacts, met recovering, injured Sheriff Brent Cody. As security appointed by the tribal counsel and his dad, Markus Cody, the two got their spiritual vibes coalesced. Brent, Ethan, Markus Cody help River track down her abducted son, Luke, while he, Brent, adapted to becoming a family man. His bomber/sniper/crazy sister, Jaime Allendale, was related to his Iraq days, and the town got into rebuilding the Elementary School with Julianne D., as the new future principal, Brent as the new PP Sheriff, and River as the new PP Museum curator. A win-win for all and PP grew by six more including Ryder McLachlan, Jill and Ross Campbell/ the new pharmacists, River, and Luke, who definitely needs child therapy and loads of love.
Great characters, with the historical Chumash info and the re-awakening of Brent' s ancestral psychic abilities, woven into the plot. Trust and honesty, as the foundational cornerstones of any relationship, flow through out this interesting novel. I personally think Prof. Wes, River's ex-scumbag, now deceased, husband, planted the Unabomber/Secret CIA Shadow Group Manifesto as part of his insanity defense if he was ever caught. I can only assume that Ryder McLachlan and Julianne D., will be the next HEA duo, or the florist Drea with Ryder, maybe next as she is a constant supportive character in this series. A Must-Read for romantic-suspense readers.

River is a beautiful native American archeologist that, along with her team, is brought into a small California beach town, after a mud slide reveals a part of a canoe associated with the ancient native Americans in this area. Brent is a native American Sheriff who, although on temporary disability, his father, one of the tribal elders brings in to protect the site from vandals and thieves. When they see each other there is a strong attraction ... And the story continues.. I enjoyed reading this book and meeting it's characters. If you enjoy romance novels, think you may like this one
I just finished reading Starlight Dunes by Vickie McKeehan. I have to admit I typically lean toward historical fiction, which tend to be pretty heavy reads. I chose this book as a quick distraction, something to lighten up before returning to my next big selection.
I expected the typical romance formula 'strong independent woman meets man with a past, sparks fly, fall head over heels until a misunderstanding drives them apart, miserable til minor tragedy brings them back together. Happily ever after.' And this story didn't disappoint. But.... toss in snipers, car bombs, kidnapping, and not least of all - the friendly neighborhood ghost - and this quickly turned into a page turner I thoroughly enjoyed.
When choosing this book I had noticed it was #5 in a series called Pelican Pointe Novels and was not sure if it would work as a stand alone read, but decided to give it a shot. I am happy to say it was a complete story on it's own. And I'm surprised to say I'm hooked, will definitely seek out the other 11 books in the 12 book Pelican Pointe series.
Whether you are into contemporary romance type novels or just wanting to take a break with a light fun read, I recommend Starlight Dunes.
First Thoughts: I really liked this book. Each of the two MCs had big issues and yet they found ways to come together and help each other solve them. Liked the touch of native mysticism and the ghost. The characters were great and it looks like a series with lots of great characters. Possibly a new author to follow. I want to read more of her work, especially more of this series.
I found this to be a a riveting story. It starts with River coming to town to excavate a native American sure that was discovered after a storm. The residents have mixed feelings and she has to work to assure them she will treat the discoveries with respect. She meets Brent who is on leave from the sheriff's department after an injury. He comes to find out she is hiding that her ex husband stole her son Like and she is still looking for him. So Brent uses his resources to try and find him. Then you have the story of who is trying to kill him. Somehow all these stories work together and make for a great read.
The love story of River and Brent. Someone is trying to kill Brent. They set a bomb is his home and he is out on administrative leave until he recover. So he move back to Pelican Pointe and mets River. River is an archaeologists. Brent's father and the council elders hair her to excavate some artifacts. She has a problem her son was kidnap by his father. Can she get her son back from her ex husband? Can Brent find the person who is trying to kill him? And will they find love? Great story.
This book is about an archaeologist trying to dig up the old remains of an Indian tribe. River met a sheriff on disability after a bomb went off at his house. Someone was trying to kill him. As they got to know each other, River told Brent about her ex taking off with her baby. So there was a lot to figure out in this story. I found it interesting as they tried to solve all the issues. The only thing I didn't like was when couples start off w sex instead of knowing each other first. Sex is easy, but sharing your real self is much harder.
An incredibly heart warming story, great characterisation, you couldn't help but feel for each of the characters Got a great feel for the town, people and sense of community (even jumping in at book 5).
Highly recommended... looks like I'll have to go back to start this series from the beginning even though I'm keen to know what's next...
Great writing, no spelling or punctuation mistakes, a definite full set of stars for me!
Possibly a little in love with Pelican Pointe. Thank you
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially when they talked about the ancient tribe that had lived in the area and whose descendants still did. The insights into current and past tribal Life, beliefs, customs was very interesting. The story about the archeological discovery provided a backdrop to a mystery about someone trying to kill the local sheriff, the search for a kidnapped toddler as well as a love story.
I’m in a place where i’m needing light books right now, and this was an excellent choice for me. While on the light side, Starlight Dunes had interesting characters, accompanied by a storyline with several unexpected twists. I liked reading about the Chumash tribe of Native Americans whose ancestors inhabited the central coast of California, and the archeological dig happening in the story. Finally, I typically shy away from stories with ghosts in them, but I found the ghost of Scott to be quite delightful.
after searching and discarding the myriad of free books downloaded from various sites... I just couldn't find one that caught my interest until I found, 'Starlight Dunes'. It has a suspenseful plot. a good hearty romance without being tawdry. but best of all, developed, realistic characters I would like to get to know better! I shall be visiting literary Pelican Pointe soon!
Fantastic book!! Not only very informative about the archeological field and those who give hours of their time to research various cultures but also a fascinating story with wide-ranging mystery. Excellent characters that keep a reader's interest, but also includes deep feelings and struggles of adults learning about themselves and opening their hearts to accept happiness.
Brent is the county sexy cop but lately he has been running away from his heritage and his powers and not to mention someone is out to kill him until he met River. River move around often when they go dig in the mud but her main job is to find her son and her native powers dont help since she only gets the past. Thank goodness the ghost of the town is there to keep them safe.
I was getting tired of the interminable infodumps and 'buzz' words when... bam. A character suffering from Bloody effing Alzheimer’s again.
FFS! Stop it! Why? I mean... WHY? Do authors think its romantic? Or enjoyable? Or is it just that its the 'fashionable' disease? Let me tell you - it sure as hell isn't. There is NO CURE. NO magical way to make it any better.
I did enjoy this book. Learned about a Native American Tribe I was not familiar with. The Tribe is the Chumash. Fascinating people. First of this series I have read. Characters were very lifelike and easy to like. Would recommend reading Pelican Pointe in order. That would be a great way to be introduced to the people of Pelican Pointe.
When archaeologist River Amandez and County Sheriff Brent Cody meet, the electric energy is palpable. Between the search for River’s son Luke, who was kidnapped by her ex, and the lunatic who blames Brent for her brother’s suicide there’s plenty of action in the quiet little seaside town named Pelican Point.
There are no words in my vocabulary to describe how much I throughly enjoyed this novel. Brent and River's coming together was an all engrossing read, that took me on a crazy, wonderful journey from the first word. I've said it again and I'll say it until I get to the end of this series. The novel get better with each offering.
What a great outing from Vickie McKeehan. The love between Brent and river is felt from the first time they met. Brent is badly injured and must ensure his therapy and rehab. River has her own secrets and personal issues. Can Brent get his sheriff position. Can River get her son.
Lots of action, a well written story, a ghost...what's not to love! I enjoyed the character interactions and fast pace as well as the archaeological aspects of excavating historical sites. Even tho this is one book of a series, it is interesting and a fine stand alone read. I recommend Starlight Dunes.
I loved this book! Pelican Pointe sounds like a great little town! I would love to live in a place like that! River and Brent's story was great! Love that there is a resident ghost!!! I look forward to reading more of this series!
Brent and River are both native Americans but, from different tribes. An archeology dig brings River to this town here she discovers others who have "the sight".
I have so enjoyed Vicky McKeehan’s Pelican Pointe Series! Every book is a great story. The characters are believable and the story line keeps you reading to the very end. Starlight Dunes was a great mystery and love story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
This was one of those books I couldn’t put down. Read all night long. The relationships, characters, and story around the homey coastal community theme also made it refreshingly normal, yet suspenseful.
I am loving this series more and more with each book. Watching the town grow, the residents taking pride in it. And the small mysteries in each book make it the best of both genres. HIGHLY recommend!!!
New adventures, new people, new twist and turns. You will love River. Love the mystery of who is causing major problems for the love of her life. Happy for Brent. Wish I had a Scott in my life.
River has her secrets. She's not a very trusting person due to her ex husband. Brent also has an ex spouse. They share a ghost as a friend. River is an archeologist in charge of a new dig. Brent is the local sheriff whom someone is trying to kill.
I liked River, she was strong willed and had a plan in place to find her son,Luke. Brent helped her improve her plan to get Luke back. Brent & River shared their with experiences with the supernatural.
Great story, author kept you curious to keep reading. Loved all the characters including the spirit walker. Very entertaining and I will read more of the author books.
