In a Nutshell: A beautiful middle-grade story combining magical realism and grief in a memorable way. Loved the plot, the setting, the themes, and the magic! Much recommended.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Story Synopsis:
Twelve-year-old Amy has not spoken to anyone since two years. To help her recovery, her parents send her to her paternal aunt, an eccentric woman named Wilma who lives in Meadow Hill Manor in the town of Belper in Derbyshire. Amy doesn’t miss London, or the stress her parents indirectly put on her to talk, but she does miss one thing… or maybe, one person…
Her new abode is an ancient home, quiet and secluded, but at night, there are strange tinkling sounds coming from somewhere above. Who is making these noises? Is the house haunted? Should she confront whatever is making this nocturnal racket, or would it be better to hide away, as she has been doing in the last couple of years? Will Amy be able to find her voice again in Meadow Hill Manor?
The story comes to us in Amy’s first person perspective.
I love all kinds of children’s books, but middle-grade fiction has a special place in my heart. I love how this genre tackles difficult themes in a way its young readers can understand, while still giving its plots and setting enough depth to engage slightly advanced readers. (Something most YA authors need to work on.)
This book is no exception. Be it the themes or the writing or the setting or the fantastical elements, this 112-page novel hits the mark on almost all counts. Even if it has a greater proportion of tragic/serious content than is typical in this genre, the author handles it in an age-appropriate manner. (That said, better to give this novel to sensitive children only after the adults in their lives have whetted it.)
The title gives you an open hint of the two main components of the story – butterflies and Meadow Hill Manor. I will not elaborate on the first as I don’t want to get into a single spoiler. But suffice to say, there’s no way you aren’t going to love the titular butterflies. Most children love books with animals and magic, and this story has both of these elements in abundance and handles them in a fantastic way.
As regards the house itself, the manor is brought alive by the lush writing. The imagery is so vivid that the entire house and everything in it is stunning to visualise. Though the story is set in the contemporary timeframe, Meadow Hill Manor adds a touch of history and mystery to the plot. Despite the elaborate descriptions, the pacing is still very fast and the plot tight enough to complete in a single sitting.
Amy is excellent as the central character. The impact of the past on her mental health is written realistically. While the initial part of the book feels a bit repetitive due to Amy’s monotonous thoughts, the plot soon explains why she behaves the way she does. A child struggling with past/present trauma might empathise more with Amy’s struggles. But even otherwise, little readers will be able to feel her pain and sense of loss.
I loved the representation of Amy’s selective traumatic mutism; her struggle with her voice feels so true to life. It is ironic that we “hear” the story in the voice of a character who doesn’t speak. So we are privy to all her thoughts and indecisions, and also to her grief and joy, but without direct spoken dialogues for most of the journey. The first-person perspective is put to excellent use in this novel, as we get to see her mental struggles directly.
Of the remaining characters, Aunt Wilma is the most impactful. Opening her home to a niece she has never met before cannot have been easy, but Wilma proves herself a trusting soul who is always ready to listen. Adults could learn much about effective communication and the healing power of love from Wilma’s behaviour. Amy’s new classmate Gillian is a fun character, adding some light moments when the going gets tough for our little narrator – the perfect friend. I wish Amy’s parents had been given a little more active role in the proceedings.
The ending is just right for this tale: not perfectly happy, not perfectly complete, but perfectly hopeful. It might seem a bit ad hoc to some readers, but I love how it ends on an important turning point for Amy.
All in all, a beautiful and meaningful story that was almost perfect for me, and will be outstanding for its target age-group of 8-12 year olds.
Strongly recommended, except to overly-sensitive little middle graders. If this author’s debut work is so powerful, I can’t wait to see what she writes next!
4.5 stars.
I am absolutely astounded by the creativity and writing of this debut YA novel by Stefanie Parks. What a beautiful story! Thought-provoking, interesting and heartfelt.
Amy is a 12-year-old girl, sent to live with her Aunt Wilhelmina after a tragic event. She is obviously grieving, dissociating often, and breathing away the hurt feelings in her meager existence. Since the event happened a couple of years ago, she has quit talking. The Manor is allegedly haunted with all kinds of tinkling noises and dream whispers. And best of all, there is Butterfly Magic.
Amy is a sweet girl, haunted by her tragedy, filled with anxiety but yet hopeful and strong. The author has beautifully woven her and created a rich tapestry with colorful characters.
Highly, highly recommend!
I really not sure how to start this review. This book really took my heart bought out emotions. I really took my time reading this short book. I had no idea what this book was about. I knew I needed to read this book. Just on the cover alone. I wasn’t disappointed at all. I fell in love with world and the characters this author created. I will be adding more books from this author on my TBR. This book is cute and loving and tragic and you want to reach out and grab Amy and hug her. I enjoyed the magic realism in this book. I could see the butterflies flying around. I think they are such beautiful creatures. This book and the characters will have hold on my heart. A really good way to start 2024. Honestly a favorite for me already. I will be adding my own ebook copy. I highly recommend this book.
About Book:
Amy is young girl who is being sent to live with her father’s sister out in the country. Because Amy hasn’t spoken a word since a family member has passed away. Her parents are handling the grief a little different than Amy. Amy has heard stories about the woman she is going to live with. That not only is she her father sister. But she is a bit weird. People have said that her aunt house is haunted.
When Amy goes to move in with her aunt her life changes and she faces her past and her loss. With a little help of her aunt and some new magical friends. That Amy didn’t know she needed and some magic that. Has been passed down to only the ladies of her family from what her aunt has told her. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a book that is magical and beautiful. And some tragic things.
I want to thank the author and @lovebooktours for the complimentary ebook copy.
Oh...this is just one of those books that jumps off the shelf and grabs you!
It's absolutely stunning front cover really caught my eye and I jumped at the chance to see what magic it held inside.
This is a super short story which is aimed at the younger age 9-12 audience and it was just a perfectly written book which I'd have adored when I was younger. (That's not to say I didn't adore it now - because I absolutely did!)
12 year old Amy has been sent to live with her Aunt. She's grieving the loss of someone special and has retreated into herself to the point that she won't even talk.
Amy is such a relatable character and it was so, so easy to feel her grief and understand her feelings.
When she hears a strange noise and investigates, Amy discovers and is drawn in by the magical glass butterflies which her Aunt has stored in her attic.
I loved this magical element to the storyline as this will capture the hearts of the youngsters reading this whilst also provided a great insight into the nature of healing such a trauma.
The story was beautifully written and I believe that the underlying meanings and messages within this story could be palpable at any age.
This was such a heart-warming story with an important message that is so needed in this era where mental health is so prevalent.
My only complaint is that it's so short - I literally could have read much more about Amy and her Aunt and what happened next.
Brilliant pacing and size for the target audience though.
Maybe we'll see a book 2 coming soon?
Firstly, let’s just appreciate this front cover! We were instantly drawn to this book and could wait to start it! 😍🦋
I read this book with my 7 year old daughter, Peighton. We read a chapter or 2… sometimes 3 each night - it didn’t take us many nights to finish it!
When I asked my daughter what she liked about this book she said “I liked the butterflies and my dog is called Ruby just like Ruby in the book. I would love to live in a big house like that house too and have butterflies flying about in my bedroom”.
As a mother reading this book to my daughter I really liked the message the book sends out about speaking up about your feelings and trying not to bottle them all up. I enjoyed reading about the different types of butterflies and their own special magic. This was such a heartwarming and special read, I don’t think I’ll ever forget this book. The book ended on a sort of cliff hanger and definitely did not feel finished… this gives me hope that there might be another book to follow!?
Definitely recommend this book to parents with children aged 7+ and for young readers!
Amy is a twelve-year-old girl that has had a tragic event in her life and she has been sent to live with her Aunt Wilhelmina at the Manor. Amy isn't bothered where she gets sent to, she has blocked everything out, she has withdrawn into herself and stopped talking, hoping to block out the pain and the memories. After a while things in the house start to intrigue her. Even after being warned off by her Aunt, Amy still what's to know more. It's not long before Amy discovers the butterflies, each one different from the other and have their own special magic. The author has wrote this story in a way that draws you in and you feel as if you are with Amy walking through the house. This is a beautiful story about grief, love, patience, understanding and acceptance of loss.
Breathe. Just breathe…and get ready for one wild and beautiful ride! Young Amy has been going through a lot and her parents send her to live with Weirdo Wilma, an aunt who is just as mysterious as the new manor Amy temporarily calls home. Hidden behind the creepy exterior of an old home is an absolutely magical story where butterflies come alive in a way we could never dream of. Each butterfly is unique in its markings, but also rich symbolism that guides Amy through the story. Stefanie Parks delivers the right amount of intrigue to keep the reader on their toes, but the heart of the story resonates with the perpetual struggle of human nature- the choice to use our gifts for good or evil. The Butterflies of Meadow Hill Manor is a remarkably magnificent, deeply layered book that will leave a place in the heart of all readers, no matter their age. 🦋
This was a powerful, moving, and whimsical story. Not only did the plot draw me in, but when I saw it was set in Derbyshire I had to read it! Little did I know I was in for an absolute treat.
Amy, a pre-teen girl, has moved to Derbyshire to stay with her aunt in a mysterious manor house. After a past loss Amy is healing from the trauma, and her parents hope that by staying with her aunt she will have the space to recover.
📚Blog📖YouTube📖Instagram📚
The fantastical elements were so creative, so vividly depicted, and added so much to the story. I really felt the sense of awe and wonder that the characters had, as I too was drawn in by the magic. There was an air of mystery as well, as it was revealed across the course of the story what the magic could do and what it was there for.
At its heart though, this is a beautiful and heartbreaking story about grief. Although we don’t know at the start exactly what Amy has been through, we know she has been through something incredibly traumatic, and the more we learn about her past the more my heart went out to her. As well as Amy, we also see how the rest of her family copes with their grief, and how their different coping mechanisms can clash and cause tensions. The book doesn’t shy away from that, but instead takes them in its stride. Most importantly, the story is about healing and reconnecting with both ourselves and those around us after a tragedy.
I received a free copy for an honest review.
Review
What a beautiful book, and with a powerful message written in an easy, age appropriate manor (8-12). With only 112 pages it was a nice easy breeze through however the pages held a lot of emotion and an important message to children (and adults) indirectly about how to deal with grief, loss, and finding yourself. Especially when children of that age might find it difficult to express their feelings or understand how they are feeling when going through similar situations.
The story follows Amy who is sent by her parents to live with batty aunt wilma to 'sort her out' as her parents have given up. When Amy arrives she hears an tinkling noise but refuses to acknowledge that she cares what it is, after have reoccurring dreams about butterflies she decides to investigate, appreciating that her aunt is not forcing her to communicate, so feels safe in the environment to come back to herself and find her own voice after her trauma.
Such a beautiful story, full of magic, loss, healing and love and I love how Amy is allowed to just be, not all problems can be solved by forced communication and I think sometimes as adults we can expect things from children that we wouldn't want forced on ourselves if we were in the same situation.
A powerful story for children and definitely a learning tool for adults!
This was a really beautiful but sad read. It was enjoyable to read as it has a real sense of loss then happiness. I'm not a butterfly lover but this story has captured the idea of them being beautiful, I like the idea of glass butterflies that are magical. Showing the way, guiding decisions and helping Amy find her true self and come out of her shell.
This book was very descriptive of Meadow Hill Manor, I love Wilma and the idea of her home. Full of unused rooms, secrets and reminders of time passed. You really get a sense of the building and it's history as you read on.
I have always loved old buildings and this one fits the bill! The twinkling of the wings and the charm of the grandfather clock add to the magical effect of this story. It is easy to follow, fast paced and emotional.
Amy is described as becoming a mute after an event but it's not unearthed until later in the book about who she's thinking about or why it happened, this adds to the mystery element that I loved in this!
Look forward to more from this author in future!
This is a beautiful book that tells a beautiful story. Amy has retreated into herself and from life after a tragedy that causes her to lose someone very close to her. She stops talking and spends her time trying to block out memories of the person she lost. (I'm not saying who because I don't want to spoil anything!) She is sent to live with her aunt at Meadow Hill Manor where she discovers a secret-magical glass butterflies. With the help of the butterfly magic, Amy finally begins to slowly heal. I felt so sad for Amy; it was heartbreaking to think about such a young girl having to deal with so much grief. I really admired her aunt and her school friend Gillian for the way they handled Amy and helped with her healing process. This book is so beautifully written and tells Amy's story with great sympathy. The descriptive writing within the pages is exceptional. I could hear the tinkling of the butterflies as they fluttered and feel them lightly touching my skin, along with Amy and her aunt. This is the perfect book to get lost in.
Okay, I'll have to be that person again... So I picked up this novella because of the premise and all the raving reviews, and yes, the premise of butterfly magic is pretty cool, but everything else? The writing is very simplistic and repetitive to the point of being annoying (Can we please stop with the 1st person? And with using "female" as a noun instead of "woman"?). The plot has one of the worst cases of artificial suspense, because no one talks! The main character is supposed to be 12 - but at no point does she feel like that (and the mysterious "she" even less so). We are supposed to sympathise with her because of her trauma, but she comes off as obnoxious. Speaking of dealing with loss - again, it's portrayed in a very simplistic way. Even the cool magic concept leaves a lot of questions (Why isn't Aunt using it anymore? Why did she want Amy to keep away from it? Under what circumstances were the missing butterflies lost?) But worst of all, it's simply boring - and then the story just ends abruptly. So maybe if the reader is 12 themselves they would enjoy this? Maybe?
This is the author’s debut children’s story and it’s a triumph of story telling. Amy is 12 and “doesn’t care”. She’s been packed off to stay with her Aunt in the Derbyshire town of Belper, and there the story begins. I was completely hooked from chapter one. I wanted to know more and more about Amy; why was she there? What had happened to her? What secrets lie inside Meadow Hill Manor? All these questions and more are for the reader to discover as the author takes us on a journey with Amy as she slowly comes to unlock the secrets hidden within the Manor and within herself. Beautifully and sensitively written, with a strong writing style and attention to detail. This is a wonderful story for children and adults alike. I absolutely loved it. More please 😀
A beautiful poignant book about loss, and dealing with it... about being in a place that feels safe enough to heal, at one's own pace...
Time does not heal, there is no moving on from some losses... And I feel that those are the cruelest things to say to someone who is unable to cope with loss...
Everyone's grief journey is different, there's no one formula that can be applied... One learns to live with that loss, one learns to live accepting that things will never be 'that' way again... And this journey is not linear...
Apart from Amy's Aunt, I loved Gillian - the talkative classmate who decided she is going to be Amy's friend, and show up for her everyday. I have one such friend, and I'm lucky she chooses me everyday.
I absolutely loved The Butterflies of Meadow Hill Manor, it was beautifully written. I loved the direction it took and I found Amy to be a realistic character.
This novel is YA and I must admit whilst I was reading I forgot Amy was a 12 year old. The topic the story brushed upon could have worked for any age of character, the way it played out was surprising and I found myself captured in the storyline.
This was written really well, the story had it all, emotions, intrigue and the surprise element. I just loved it, the characters, the butterflies, the twists and turns, this novel just had it all and it was the perfect short read.
This tale was so enchanting and beautiful. I should say I adored Butterflies and moths too so I was already excited but this tale was just perfect in every way.
The pacing was perfect as was the tone. I adored the whimsical touches and how we see Amy progress throughout the tale. From her tragedy to her hope and beyond. A stunning debut that will definitely stick with you long after finishing. It deals with numerous topics including loss, heartbreak, love and family in such a beautiful way.
It is hard to say more without spoilers but regardless of your preferred genres this one is a must read.
This is a moving fantasy fiction story which the author tenderly and carefully takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster discussing themes of grief and anxiety along with friendship and discovery to deliver a truly beautiful story.
Everyone handles grief differently, there is no right or wrong way in dealing with it, just your own truth. For those who have lost people close to them this may bring out emotions long since gone , however it is a story of love and light too. Although this book is aimed at teens adults may take a lot from it too.
I wish I had somewhere like Meadow Hill Manor to go to to help me cope with loss.
Wow I absolutely loved this book. Just by the cover alone. Gorgeous. Beautifully written. I loved Amy. I just wanted to step into the book and give her a big hug. The way she is described as hurting. The way the butterflies were written I have a vivid imagination and it was beautiful. The glass windows were described in my mind they were breathtaking. I loved the ending and I can't wait for next book. 5*.
So if we HAVE to categorise, I suppose this is a really a children’s book. I think we should tear up the rule book on that though, because I’m as old as the hills and I loved this. It’s a beautiful, life affirming story. The author’s writing is very descriptive and I felt like I could relate to both Amy and her aunt. The imagery and symbolism of the titular butterflies really resonated with me. I’d recommend this gorgeous story to anyone and I know I will come back to it myself. This story will make you believe in magic. Easy five stars.
What a gorgeous book! I loved this enchanting tale about a twelve year old girl who withdraws into herself after a terrible tragedy. After moving in with her mysterious aunt, with the help from some magical stained-glass butterflies, she begins the long road to recovery. The spellbinding tale was beautifully written and was such a treat. I didn't realise just how much I needed to read a story like this until I reluctantly finished it. Great debut novel.
Wow! So magical and an uplifting read. The gorgeous front cover made me immediately sign up to this book tour and I am so glad I did and got accepted. Although this book is for younger readers I still throughly enjoyed reading it. When it ended, I wanted more, I wanted the story to continue. I thought the grief and healing elements in the story were very well written in a way for those younger readers to understand and relate to. I feel like the butterflies are an elaborate metaphor of the magic within us all, we may just need a little help finding it. In this story each type of butterfly had a distinguishing attribute to help Amy in different ways. They provided her comfort, hope and transformed her life. The detailed descriptions of the butterflies really helped with the image created in my head and the fact that they were made of glass symbolises how delicate these creatures are. Amy's aunt and her friend Gillian were lovely supporting characters. Who knows one day there might be another story where these beautiful, delicate and tinkling butterflies bring their magic to us once again. 🦋✨🦋✨🦋✨
The Butterflies of Meadow Hill Manor is an enchanting and highly original debut novel from writer Stefanie Parks. The book is categorized as a middle-grade read but can easily be enjoyed by all ages because of its emotionally moving, magical storyline. The story also includes some more serious subject matter, including loss, neglect, guilt, anxiety, heartbreak, and family conflicts.
The main characters in this story are well developed and memorable. Amy is first presented as a highly intelligent girl, haunted by something in her past, and has been sent to her aunt’s home to recover. The author brilliantly unfolds the story by revealing Amy’s issues and secrets through major plot points, making for a very captivating story. Amy’s relationship with her aunt is the polar opposite of her relationship with her mother and father. While her parents neglect her and show her no affection or support, her aunt is eager to get Amy communicating again and make her feel at home. Many of their conversations are filled with humour, intriguing dialogue, and magical words of wisdom. For those who have lost people close to them, this may be a very relatable and emotional read. By the end of the story, Amy is forced to confront her grief, false beliefs, and self-imposed guilt, and her story transforms from one of tragedy to one of hope. That being so, readers of all ages will be able to take a lot away from Amy’s journey and lessons.
The real enchantment of this story is Amy’s relationship with the magical glass butterflies. Each type of butterfly had a distinguishing attribute that assisted Amy in giving her the answers she needed and helping her heal. The butterflies are definitely a metaphor that all the answers we seek are within—it’s a matter of healing all the parts of ourselves that have been taken into shadow for us to find the answers. The author intricately describes all the different butterflies with all their glorious colours and abilities, making for a very vivid and compelling listening experience. Unfortunately, after such a magical and emotionally moving story, the ending felt quite rushed and unsatisfying. Some of the secondary characters were reintroduced at the end, but not enough resolution or plot was given. There is definitely more story to tell here, and this provides a great opportunity for another adventure at Meadow Hill Manor!
Overall, this is a story that could be enjoyed by all types of readers, especially those who are fond of magical, meaningful stories. If you’re not persuaded to pick up this book by its gorgeous cover art or its alluring title, then surely this review will sway you! The audiobook, so expertly and beautifully narrated by Josie Charles, gives the feel of a classic story, in the same vein as The Secret Garden, that will stay with you long after you’ve finished listening!
The Butterflies of Meadow Hill Manor is a beautiful short story about grief and love and magic and doing things at our own pace.
It follows Amy who is grieving, who doesn’t speak, and who doesn’t know how to move on.
But Meadow Hill Manor has magic and that magic may just be what she’s needs to help with her grieving.
This is such a beautifully written book that packs an incredible emotional punch in such a short time. The only thing I could wish for from this book was more! The ending, while positive and hopeful, felt a little abrupt, and I just want to know more of Amy’s story, more of seeing her grow, more magic!
I think it’s a lovely story for its age group about grief and love and sadness.
And while I was reading, the quote from Marvel’s WandaVision popped in my head “What is grief, if not love persevering?”, and I just feel like it sums up the story pretty well ❤️
First of all, this cover! So beautiful!! It’s only January, but this is my favorite book cover so far this year. Now, let’s talk about this magical story about healing and grief.
This books is equal parts magic, compassion, and mystery. Amy has been sent to live with her aunt to “recover”. From what, we aren’t too sure until your into the meat of the book, but we know it’s traumatic since Amy has stopped speaking. In fact, she’s attempting to not enjoy anything ever again.
But there’s a mystery in the attic of her aunt’s home at Meadow Hill Manor. Stefanie Parks weaves a colorful tale of magical, glass butterflies that have chosen Amy. Through their individual affinities the glass butterflies aid in Amy’s recovery.
It was an absolutely engaging story and I couldn’t put it down. Meant for middle-grade readers, I too was swept away in the enchantment. My only qualm with this book was that there wasn’t enough.
The ending felt quick, and unsatisfying — so I do hope Stefanie Parks will bring us back to Meadow Hill Manor with answers soon!
4.5 stars!
Thank you @sparks_writing @BookGuild @KellyALacey @lovebookstours #Ad #LBTCrew #BookTwitter #FreeReview #FreeBookReview #ButterflyMagic for letting me be part of this tour and reviewing this book. The Butterflies of Meadow Hill Manor is a young adult fantasy genre. I absolutely love this front cover, it's so beautiful. I was drawn to this book for two reasons, one I love butterflies and because I live down the road from Belper. Furthermore, I was really happy when I got picked to read this book. This story is beautifully written and did pull at my heart string. When the story ended, I wanted more, so I hope there will be a second book. This is a short read of 112 pages and I feel young teenagers will love this, even adults like me will too. I feel the author Stefanie Park takes you on an adventure with the beautiful and charming butterflies that capture your heart. The story is easy to get into, and I read this in a couple of hours and was gripped straight away. The story is about Amy who parents send her to go stay with her Aunt for a while at Meadow Hill Manor due to something that happened in Amy past that she has not dealt with. Then Amy hears some strange noises in her Aunties house that changes her life. This is a very magical story about healing, founding happiness again. Very well written with a terrific plot, 5 stars. Strongly recommend this book.
