Rate this book
This in-depth yet accessible dinosaur drawing guide combines humor, creativity, and the latest dino research to show artists young and old how to breathe life into drawings of their prehistoric favorites.

Prehistoric Pencil Power!
Even though they lived some 65 million years ago, dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptiles continue to rule today. From movies to comics and cartoons, these ancient, giant beasts are everywhere you turn. Of course, who wants to just read about or watch these dinos when you can learn how to use pencils, pens, markers, and more to draw your very own?

Cartoonist James Silvani combines easy-to-follow art exercises with the latest, greatest dino-facts to help you create fun and cool dinosaur doodles all by yourself. With lessons on old favorites like T-rex and stegosaurus, as well as lesser-known (but still awesome) creatures like the massive argentinosaurus, Draw-a-Saurus has everything the dinosaur fan could ever ask for (outside of their very own pet dino!).

This one is for the boy child. I can't draw a straight line but he seems to like it..and he is obsessed with dino's. That's been his Christmas list for the last six years. Anything Dino. When he saw this was available on blogging for books he offered to clean his room if I requested it. Room still not clean but I'm sure he will be bribed to do it at some point and time. Yeah, right.

Anyways..here is how the book looks.

Totally out of my league but he will have fun. 3 stars from me..4 from him. He won this toss.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review from blogging for books.

My Quick Thoughts: What is not to love about this one?!! Well, I love everything in this book. From the detailed instructions, the dino-facts and learning, to the touch of humor throughout, Draw-a-Saurus is sure to appeal to dino-fans everywhere.

The step-by-step instructions are easy to understand and facts as well as silly and cute observations included across the pages make it even more interesting and fun. Silvani not only shows the basic standard profiles we normally see in such books but also shows how we can add motion or appearance with simple updates, and also gives instructions and tips with examples for cartoonish, whimsical, or dino-with-a-twist appearances.

Disclaimer: I got a digital review copy of this books from Netgalley originally and these are my honest opinions of the book. Please note that the review is based on a more recent reading of the book (library/personal copy)

This is SUCH a great book, and it's not just for kids! I draw dinosaurs and the time and with this guide it is so much easier to figure out how to draw them in different poses! It shows different dinosaurs from different angles in ways that I was struggling to find before I got it. I HEAVILY recommend this book to anyone, young or old, who has any interest in drawing dinosaurs. It also has a decent amount of humorous remarks that I keep finding more of as I am using the book as a reference.

Draw-A-Saurus is quite possibly the coolest, most entertaining dinosaur book ever! It's more than just a step-by-step guide to draw your own rrrrrrawr-worthy dinos, it's also a great adventure filled with fun facts, exciting tidbits of information and plenty of humor. This book is perfect for any adventure-loving child who likes to draw or paint - boys will be crazy about it, but I'm pretty sure girls will love it too! And, to be perfectly honest, I myself - being a 30-year-old mom - had a fantastic time with it, too. It's just too fun a book to pass up!

Did you know that:
- though the word dinosaur means "terrible lizard", these prehistoric dragon-like creatures were actually "more closely related to birds than to lizards"?
- the head of an average T-Rex was 5 feet long and his teeth grew up to 6 inches long?
- most Ceratopsians came from North America, but some also came from Asia?
- the stegosaursus had the smallest head of all dinosaurs? (The size of the head of a horse)

You can learn all that and much, much more while reading Draw-A-Saurus! And, of course, by the time you turn the last page, you'll be drawing beasts like tyrannosaurs, ornithopods, theropods and stegosaurus like a pro.

James Silvani is a well-known and accomplished artist and illustrator. He has drawn characters for Disney, Warner Bros., Dreamworks, Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics. His experience and impressive level of skill really shows - and not only in his drawings alone, but in a way he can teach the process of drawing to others. His step-by-step tutorials are comprehensive and easy to follow, he offers helpful tips and draws comparisons between dinosaurs and modern animals. All that really helps understand how the drawing is created, from stick-like basics figures, through bone structures, to finished and impressively detailed creatures. I believe, even a completely talent-less person such as myself who can't even draw a straight line could learn how to draw from this book. I think kids and adult alike will have plenty of fun with it!

I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you!

I've got a thing for Dinosaurs. So I couldn't resist this book completely about Dinosaurs, even though it's a drawing book for children. And I didn't expect I would like it as much as I did, because it is more than just drawings of Dino's.

First of all, instead of giving you just one position to make your drawing (something that always disappointed me in other books that taught you how to draw), it offers a lot of different angles, and focusses on details. It also tells you what kind of changes you would have to make to change the dinosaur into other dinosaurs from the same family. This gives you a large number of dinosaurs to draw (also flying/swimming ones).

What I also really liked is that it - in my humble opinion - was trying to learn children some very important lessons from Biology; namely, that nature has certain features that are repeated over and over, even in animals that don't look alike at all. For example, it shows the skeleton of both Humans and a Dinosaur to explain that they are actually the same. During the book, it will focus on different parts that are always there, but not always visible (like digits, knees, hipbones etc).

Besides, it motivates to look to living animals for inspiration, like elephants, rhino's and more.

And finally, the book is witty. That's just another great plus. Some drawings are for a smoothie-drinking T-rex and why not a variation on the Swan Lake performed by a Brachiosaurus and an Allosaurus? It motivates to use the imagination and be creative. I really liked this book...

If you are into dinosaurs, or art, or both, then this book is definitely for you. Kids and adults are fascinated with these humungous, beautiful creatures who roamed the earth 65 million years ago. I know that this book will bring delight as fun facts are woven throughout the pages, the history of the dinosaur is shared and best of all, the reader learns how to break down and draw these complex creatures by following easy, step-by-step instructions. Silvani has incorportated history and science together, which makes the book not only creative, but educational as well.

The author gives practical artist advice in his "Getting Started" chapter. He points out that you will need paper, pencils, erasers, and pens which are all best friends of a budding artist extraordinare. He explains the basics of the dinosaur's anatomy and points out that with simple ovals and lines you too are capable of drawing such a magnificent creature. He talks about adding motion poses, texture and colour to bring the animal to life and that is to your liking. This book is a dinosaur lover's delight. It contains a compilation of witty, hilarious illustrations that work so well to add wit and humour to what could be another boring, stagnant, "Let's Draw Dinosaurs" book. He takes it to a whole new level of .... shall I dare say it? ..... FUN!

The book includes clever one-liners and hidden jokes to make you giggle and smile. Best of all he includes the latest dino-facts which every dinosaur lover should know. These beasts capture the imagination of both young and old and all ages will enjoy pursuing the lessons and participating in them for a long time. Well done Mr. Silvani!

This book will help you draw all of the prehistoric reptiles you could ever want. It starts you at the beginning with gathering your supplies and leads you all the way through to the very end with composing your backgrounds and adding fine details to your drawing. The dinosaurs are split into logical groups and basic instruction is provided for each type of dinosaur along with variations. Where it is possible Silvani has included a current animal to use as a reference, even if that reference only applies to skin texture or joint shape.

This book is liberally peppered with interesting facts about dinosaurs and lots of humor. Silvani does absolutely nothing to curb the artistic tangents you might find yourself on while drawing dinosaurs. Dinosaurs with the coloring of cows? Dinosaurs doing the hokey pokey? Dinosaurs skipping through fields picking blueberries? Dinosaurs in spaaaaaaaaace? Do what you want to do with your dinosaurs, Silvani is just here to help you make them look good!

I may be slightly biased in my assessment of this book because his work was a big part of my childhood. However, I think this book is excellent! I wish this book had been available when I was in first grade and utterly obsessed with dinosaurs, my drawings could definitely have used the help! I can't wait for my second grader to get home from school to see his reaction to this book, he is going to love it! If you want to learn to draw dinosaurs or if you have a child that wants to learn to draw dinosaurs this book is one you should definitely get!

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

My daughter picked this one because a) she LOVES dinosaurs, b) she LOVES books and c) she loves drawing. This caught her eye immediately. I expected her to love it, but I found myself opening it up and skimming through it and enjoying it as well.

It's a really well done How to Draw type of book. It begins with your materials and takes you through to the finishing touches. Instead of just giving you the step by step (it does that too), it actually breaks it down into why you start first with this line and not the head. It shows you the different ways the dinosaurs toes will look when on the ground and when lifted. It shows details of the skeletons which help you grasp a better idea of why you curve in a certain spot and helps you compare animals and people to the dinosaurs. It offers a lot of angles and details. I loved how it shows different positions. It breaks down the dinosaurs into different groups and how to change certain details to make it a different dinosaur.

My favorite part of the book was the fun facts and the humorous wit involved! The cute little side notes, not to mention the dinosaur skipping to gather blueberries had my daughter laughing whole-heartedly. My daughter loved it and has requested it on her birthday list.

I’m not very talented in the art department, but something drew me to James Silvani’s Draw-A-Saurus: Everything You Need To Know To Draw Your Favorite Dinosaurs. This how-to book mixes art technique, imagination, scientific facts, and silly humor to create a truly special, outrageously entertaining read!

Silvani provides young readers with simple, accessible step by step instructions on how to draw a wide array of dinosaurs. Even those with minimal drawing experience (ahem, me!) will find the instructions easy to follow and immensely helpful. Silvani pairs his techniques with bright, rich, captivating illustrations that will amuse readers of all ages. And Silvani incorporates his laugh-out-loud, silly humor throughout the book, adding quite a bit of charm. I love how Silvani encourages young readers to take his techniques and infuse them with their own creativity and imagination, to create something that is wholly theirs!

But Silvani doesn’t just stop at technique, creativity, and humor...he also sprinkles in quite a bit of fascinating scientific dino-facts!

My Final Thoughts: Whether your young reader is a dino lover, art lover, or both, Draw-A-Saurus: Everything You Need To Know To Draw Your Favorite Dinosaurs is sure to delight, teach, and entertain for a long time!

This is a great book for kids (and the rest of us) to learn how to draw dinosaurs. My middle son loves dinosaurs with a passion and this book helped him learn step-by-step how to draw them.

What I liked about this book vs. the usual learn to draw books, is that the author took the time to make it fun for the intended audience. Rather than just lacing it through with boring dinosaur facts as most do, he made it fun with little facts and quips and some silly pictures.

The drawings are easy to emulate and in no time, my son was coming up with drawings that looked just like those in the book.

This would be great for a child's art class or as a gift. If you have someone in your family who loves dinos, you can't go wrong with this book.

Well, "read." It isn't the sort of book you read line by line. I looked at every page and read all the humorous bits. Ever want to draw a tyrannosaurus off to pick blueberries in a bonnet with a basket in its little arms? This is the book for you.
The drawing tips are excellent, showing angles, poses, actions, etc. and hints are given on how to render the bits we don't know about - skin, coloring, feathers vs scales. This is so much fun too look at, you might possibly be delayed in drawing because you're spending all your time with the snarky comments from the "editor" or drawings being "photobombed" by archaeopteryx.
The book is suitable for drawing serious and accurate dinosaurs as well as cartooning them. Great gift for any of your dino-mad nieces, grands, little brothers, etc.
I can't wait to get started.
Oh, darn that archaeopteryx! Getting in the way again!

This is a nifty wee "how to draw" book that goes one stage further than the step-by-step illustrations - it encourages you to look at the subject from a variety of angles, to get creativity with adornments and colouration and to use your imagination. Facts are combined with some crazy quirks - silly saurus pictures like a T-Rex skipping or a pterosaur fishing, complete with rod. My only (very minor) concern is that the silly facts may overshadow the true facts and that for the very young and gullible it could be confusing.

Apart from that, it was a great little book and has inspired me to draw dinosaurs.

Draw-a-saurus by James Silvani is a beautifully drawn book that teaches children how to draw those classically loved dinosaurs. This book provides hours of entertainment for children and at the same time have found a way to weave important facts about these specific dinosaurs. Though drawing books are a thing of the past, with new and improved electronic devices, this book is a must have. Silvani has provides detailed step by step instructions and words of encouragement to aid kids into drawing. He even has included a personalised short story both in the beginning and the end of this book to draw the reader in and to conclude this beautiful little book.

This book is so fun!!!
I've read through the whole book even though I only drew 1 dino:)
I can draw a bit but I've never tried tackling dinosaur but with the step by step and the silly things put through out it made it more fun and easy
I even opened the book up to t-rex page (the Dino I drew) and let my kiddos draw it. They didn't do to bad for a 4 and 6 year old :) And there were random things throughout that were cute/funny My only issue with it was the times, you know 62 millions of years ago or what not I don't believe it but it's easy to browse over that part

My five-year-old son loves dinosaurs. I wanted to review this book to see if it was something that he might enjoy and I can say that he loves it too (in fact, he thinks it is his book). Now, let me be clear, this book is advanced for a five-year-old. To be totally honest, it is a little honest for my five-year-old’s dad :) But, the description are easy to follow and I felt like I did not have to be an expert artist (or even a proficient artist) to be able to start drawing dinosaurs. This will be a book that I enjoy with my son for a long, long time.

I was sent a copy of the book for review through Net Galley, as always, all opinions are my own.

I pulled this out the other night while I was babysitting my friend’s son. He’s into his dinosaur phase right now, they’re all he wants to talk about so I thought we’d spend some time learning how to draw them. The step-by-step directions were easy to follow and we spent several hours on our drawings. It’s a great book for any dinosaur fan, even if they aren’t a budding artist.

This is such a cute book! As an artist myself, I can tell you that the instructions are really good, but they're easy enough that even my little boy was able to do some pretty accurate drawings using the book. And there's lot of interesting information about dinosaurs waved throughout the book, as well.
Time well spent in this book.

I really liked how this book went about teaching you to draw dinosaurs. Most how to dray books are similar and full of pencil sketched circles that eventually become a horse, dog, or dinosaur. But Mr. Silvani, talks not just about how to draw, but how to make your dino's pop, and how their body types are similar to other animals.

Loved this easy to follow how-to book. I even drew a T-red the next day for my son. He took it to school and some of the boys wanted me to draw one for them. So thanks to this book I earned my Mother of the Day award. Now I'm showing my son how to draw them.

Fantastic balance between learning to draw accurately (learning the skeletal structure of a dinosaur, which ones had feathers etc) and just having some fun with it (now that you can draw a reasonably accurate pterodactyl, why not put him in a spacesuit?).
