I knew I knew the name "Zeniko Sumiya" from somewhere; I did not expect that "somewhere" to be the yuri manga 5 Seconds Before a Witch Falls in Love. It makes sense, though - like that title, this one follows two people who are stumbling their way towards true love, with one of them fighting it kicking and screaming the entire time. Also like that book, this one has a deceptively sweet core, and even if you don't love both characters, it's easy to want them to be happy.

Me he enamorado de esta historia que, extrañamente, trata sobre dos follamigos pero no hay ni una escena erótica. Eso sí la trama es adulta y los personajes tratan el tema de su relación física sin ambages y comentan cosas sexuales. Shizuki e Yano son dos músicos en la orquesta local que llevan 4 años de follamigos. Pero ahora parece que lo que sienten el uno por el otro es más intenso y que puede ir más allá de lo físico. Ganas de leer los siguientes números.

Shizuki and Yano belong to the same woodwind choir. Loud, brash, womanizing Shizuki plays the saxophone and cheerful, sunshiny Yano plays the flute. With such vastly opposing personalities, no one would expect the two to be friends.

And they aren’t.

But what no one knows is that Shizuki and Yano are in a friends-with-benefits arrangement, or to be more precise and crasser, are f*** buddies. Nothing beyond that.

Both come with their own personal baggage, a slew of failed relationships, and both have turned quite cynical where love and happily-ever-afters are concerned. Placidly content with their sex-only relationship, the two never expected feelings to creep in. As they started craving each other’s company in places beyond the love motel, and twinges of unexpected jealousy start leaking in, they might just decide to end this convenient coupling before things get messier.

But will they be able to walk away unaffected?

This story was unexpectedly warm and intuitive where fledging love is concerned. Throw in an adorable third-wheel grudgingly cheering on the two MLs and this was a rather entertaining start to a cute series.

I wanna say 4.5* but am not putting five because of the last point of my UHHHH HMMM section, if it's addressed I'll come back and put five stars.
So if you see five stars it's all good (I don't think it's something that could count as spoiler so you're good to read that part even if I changed my rating)

Ok so there is one thing that bothered me and it's the proof reading in the italian edition. There are a few mistakes that take you out of the story. But that's on the italian edition team and not the mangaka so I'm not having it influence the rating because it's not the fault of the original.

I wrote a lot.

Ok so things I really liked :

• the personalities of the characters, personally I enjoyed their banter, they aren't cliché and in bl it's really refreshing.

• the art is very cute & I. LOVE. SILLY. EXPRESSIONS.

• The author clearly knows their subject (or did their research) because instruments are an important part of the characters and setting and there's a lot of conversations around instruments, how to breath,etc... but it's all very easy to understand to someone who doesn't know anything. The instruments are also drawn so detailed, I couldn't tell you if they're drawn accurate (we all know of series with guitars and basses with the wrong amount of strings) but usually when it's detailed it's a good sign since it can at least tell you that the artist looked up references.

• I liked that the misunderstanding and conflict that came with it were resolved quickly and in a pretty natural way to the story. Misunderstandings that can be resolved with one simple question but drag on forever are the worse.

• The fact that there wasn't smut that would've taken away pages for the plot was great. If there was we wouldn't have them resolve the conflict before volume 2, I know it.


WHAT I'M UHHHH HMMM ABOUT :

• wth is that kink and do real musicians have it?
it's been hauting me, are there real people who get excited after performing because of the performance itself? I have so many questions...

• Guys maybe, just maybe after being f buddies for so long you should start reevaluating your sexuality because I don't think real straight people would make love exclusively to one person who just so happens to be of the same sex as yours for FOUR years. People usually stop calling it experimenting before it becomes "oh I don't date women because I already have you and they're too much of a hassle anyway!", straight people would still rather look for a partner of the opposite sex on the side, even with these bad experiences, than stay in a sex friends relationship with someone from the same sex for, I'm gonna repeat it again, FOUR YEARS. A straight person would've already gone to prostitutes for their fill if any relationship with a woman was too messy.

So can we please drop the Im straight but also into you, a man, but only you and will never be into any other man ever. Even tho I'm into a man rn but I could NEVER be again in the future.

seeing how this author did everything else right I realy hope it's gonna get addressed in the following volumes.






LITTLE ANECDOTE : Somehow this manga ended up on my physical TBRSoon pile right on top of this author's yuri "5 seconds before the witch" even though I had no idea they were by the same author & have hundreds of books/mangas in my TBR and just pick the vibes/kind of stories I want at the moment to put in my TBRS only pile, and with that the two mangas from the same author ended up on top of each other, like what are the odds?!?

(I have not a single time looked at the author(s) of these mangas and only found out when this manga didn't show up when searching for it on goodreads with the cover+barcode*, I put the mangaka's name and saw this manga and 5SBTW and got shocked because it's right next to me)

(*since the title was translated in italian I wrote the author's name first and would've tried with the title if it didn't work)

La storia di Shizuki e Yano, due venticinquenni, nasce tra le note e i respiri che i due condividono in una banda. Shizuki suona il sassofono baritono mentre Yano allieta tutti con il suono dolcissimo del suo flauto. Yano è sempre dolce, gentile e disponibile con tutti e Shizuki non lo sopporta proprio per il suo carattere, eppure nascondono un segreto. Oltre alla passione per la musica i due condividono un’eccitazione anche fisica quando termina un’esibizione di fronte ad un pubblico. Hanno trovato così un’intesa volta al puro soddisfacimento delle loro passioni e del momento che dura da quattro anni.
La relazione con la musica che hanno i due protagonisti e che li accomuna sarà la strada per trovare l’uno nell’altro e cercare di capire che non c’è nulla di sbagliato in loro. Entrambi con diverse relazioni alle spalle finite male, ormai sono rasseganti a non trovare nell’altra persona un compagno, ma solo uno sfogo, eppure i sentimenti che nascono nel cuore di Yano sono più forti di tutto, anche a rischio di stare male. Sempre sorridente e capace di suonare dolcissime melodie con il flauto, sarà in grado di sciogliere il cuore ormai cristallizzato di Shizuki? Il sassofonista d’altro canto non vuole nessuna relazione e quando i due vengono scoperti, ma soprattutto quando vedrà Yano con una donna tutto cambierà innescando una serie di eventi concatenati che porteranno entrambi a riflettere.
Ho amato come i due personaggi si interfacciassero tra loro e come le scene, seppur non esplicite, mi abbiano emozionata moltissimo facendomi sentire a casa durante la lettura. Il volume è il primo di una seri, ma potrebbe essere considerato autoconclusivo grazie alla bravura che ha fatto sì che gli eventi terminassero senza lasciare non detti. Un volume completo, meraviglioso che vi emozionerà molto accompagnandovi nella storia di Yano e Shizuki.

This is on me because I don't read descriptions unless I absolutely have to (I just go by tags) but I wasn't ready to be reading some innuendos and dealing with this certain philia. Still, I'm having fun so far! I don't hate any of the characters yet so that's a plus for me, I'm loving that we actually don't see any sex scenes despite how sexually motivated Shizuki and Yano are, a lot of conversations felt very straightforward and normal for a BL (which I loved). I'm just having a fun little time so far.

The only thing that actually got to me a little was Junko's little bit. They pointed out she's a minor multiple times and I liked that her crush on Yano wasn't entertained, just joked on. But it kinda overstayed its welcome for me. I like her but some of the stuff she said had me going “??? girl you're 16 or 17, calm down". Maybe because I was never liked that as a teen and neither were my friends so I was never exposed to teenagers fawning over an adult the way Junko did. It does seem like this is a volume 1 thing so HOPEFULLY I don't have to worry about this joke later on.

Actually, I know I said Junko's crush bit was the only thing that annoyed me but… the internet slang stuff was killing me. I hate reading modern and internet slang in anything and seeing words like “fap" and “cringe" and “vibe" makes me sleep forever. Vibe is whatever, to be honest, but one of the worst things the internet's done is using the word cringe to mean lame. I swear to God, if I ever read the word “goon" or “gooner" in any of these manga I'm gonna cry. I'm just gonna break down and cry. I don't know if it's the translator or what because one of the other Zeniko books had this problem and I know this is a different translator than the other 3 I've read.

Okay, das hier war wirklich mal was anderes.
Ich weiß zwar nicht, wie man es schafft sich selbst so extrem zu gaslighten und zu glauben, man sei noch irgendwie hetero :D wenn man 4 Jahre lang ne Sexbeziehung mit nem Kerl hat UND das die EINZIGE ist, während man davor 5 gleichzeitig mit Frauen hatte. Snort. Ja, sicher bist du noch hetero, sure.

Aber egal - generell ist der Manga einfach witzig und süß, auch einfach leicht zu lesen und locker flockig. Es dreht sich trotz der Sexbeziehung eigentlich gar nicht um Sex - es gab auch nicht eine einzige explizite Szene, sondern viel mehr darum, wie die beiden Kerle ihr Leben und ihre Nicht-Beziehung-Beziehung leben.
Dazu kommt, das es super süß gezeichnet ist, witzige Minicomics zwischen den Kapiteln sind, und bis jetzt auch noch kein Ultra-Drama dazu gekommen ist (Trotzdem vermute ich, dass das noch kommt.) Dazu sind die beiden auch noch ziemlich ... Normalos - beide arbeiten und spielen ein Instrument. Keine komische, weirde, dramatische, traumatisierende Hintergrundstory oder sonst was.
Für ein Contemporary-BL daher wirklich überraschend nice.

Yano e Shizuki hanno 25 anni e sono membri della stessa banda musicale, il primo suona il flauto, mentre il secondo suona il sassofono.
Entrambi non vogliono una relazione, ma da quattro anni hanno una storia da scopamici.

I due protagonisti hanno un carattere molto diverso, Yano è sempre gentile e schietto con tutti, mentre Shizuki è un po' schivo e rude.
Ad entrambi sembra andare bene mantenere questa relazione solo sul lato fisico, ma cosa si nasconde davvero nel loro cuore?

Mi è piaciuto molto come la loro storia è evoluta, i loro reali sentimenti vengono allo scoperto grazie a un incontro, un pizzico di gelosia, e una persona che può aiutare a chiarire quello che si cerca di nascondere.

Il manga è ancora in corso, questo primo volume è bello corposo e quasi autoconclusivo, ma riesce comunque a lasciarti la curiosità di continuare a leggere gli altri volumi per capire come continueranno a gestire i loro sentimenti.
È infatti un bel volume che sa unire quel pizzico di divertimento alle incomprensioni che poi fanno riflettere sulle relazioni.

Shizuki e Yano suonano in una banda locale, il primo il sassofono, il secondo il flauto. Hanno due caratteri diversissimi, con Shikuzi rude e dal fascino tenebroso che ricerca il proprio piacere, mentre Yano è allegro, gentile ed amichevole con tutti. Nessun componente della banda potrebbe sospettare che loro sono scopamici. Si tengono alquanto a distanza durante le prove, ma poi si trovano a fare sesso in un albergo. Un rapporto iniziato per caso a togliere l’eccitazione e l’ansia prima di un’esibizione, adesso sta diventando troppo complesso e forte. Shizuki ormai inizia a preoccuparsi della loro vicinanza sempre più forte e che gli fa battere il cuore.

Mi togli il respiro ha una trama che abbiamo visto in altri BL, ma riesce a distinguersi con piccoli dettagli. Particolare è l’ambiente musicale della banda e nonostante dal disegno della copertina non sembri, i due protagonisti hanno sui 25 anni e si dividono tra musica, lavoro e università. Sono ben caratterizzati nei loro difetti, presentati fin da subito.

Shizuki è quello che conosciamo per primo. Risulta freddo e calcolatore, un po’ donnaiolo che ricerca il piacere sessuale. Proprio per questo si spaventa appena si rende conto di iniziare a provare qualcosa per Yano. Le delusioni del passato lo hanno segnato e questa vicinanza con il ragazzo lo rendono nervoso. Sono piccole cose, fatte in amicizia e come compagni della band, come i consigli di respirazione per suonare meglio ma ormai non riesce più a stare vicino a Yano come prima, non con questi sentimenti che crescono in lui.

Dall’altra Yano è un ragazzo gentile, forse troppo gentile, e single in maniera inesplicabile. Confonde la gentilezza verso il prossimo con l’amore, non sapendo tracciare una linea precisa e non facendo capire i suoi sinceri sentimenti verso l’altra persona. Quindi è difficile per lui esprimere quello che prova per Shizuki e far sì che la loro relazione possa andare oltre il sesso e diventare “seria”.

I sentimenti dei due protagonisti di Mi togli il respiro sono davvero ben esplorati. Tutto viene trattato in maniera matura e seria, anche se loro sono giovani e inesperti soprattutto in sentimenti e relazioni perché sono stati superficiali ed egoisti nei confronti dei loro precedenti partner. Adesso si rendono conto di voler avere un diverso tipo di rapporto, di volerci provare. Abbiamo quindi un bel focus personale sulle loro visioni e problemi diversi nel relazionarsi, ma che hanno dei punti in comune che devono e vogliono cambiare per il bene dell’altro.

Importante è anche dire che questo manga è per nulla esplicito. Leggendo la trama di Mi togli il respiro, sapendo che Yano e Shizuki sono scopamici ci si aspetterebbe molto sesso, ma risulta molto tranquillo e a suo modo dolce. Niente di sconcio o di esplicito per quanto riguarda la nudità e quel tipo di scene. Credo che questo sia un punto di forza di questa storia molto bella, più profonda di quello che sembra e adatta ad un pubblico molto vasto.

Può risultare un buon approccio ai BL perché è un classico del genere, con una trama già vista ma che presenta un bel focus sui sentimenti dei personaggi e la loro psicologia. Si dimostra una lettura piacevole, all’apparenza semplice ma in realtà più profonda e complessa, che dimostra come due cuori possano risuonare sulla stessa melodia. E personalmente sono curiosa di ascoltarla ancora.

È decisamente una buona opera, soprattutto focalizzata sul modo in cui evolve e cambia la relazione tra i personaggi nel tempo. Ho apprezzato che le scene erotiche non fossero mostrate, è una scelta azzeccata per il tipo di narrazione. Molto interessante la parte del rapporto dei personaggi con la musica e sulle sfide che anche la relazione con il proprio hobby può porre: è un tema unico e spesso trattato superficialmente, ma qui è ben fatto. Avrei comunque desiderato qualcosa di più, perché la storia non mi ha fatto sentire trascinata quanto avrei voluto per le potenzialità che aveva, per questo ho optato per le 4 stelle invece che 5.

I did expect a lewd scene between them, but I was so disappointed when I didnt see the PASSION 😭 however, it was a very lovely fluffy read! I recommend 10\10 and if I could I would debut this again and read it again, which I know I will lol the art is super cute and I love these 2 together!

I was instantly intrigued by this story - I played the bari sax when I was in high school, so the main character playing it was amazing. Unfortunately, he is kinda douche-y and I lost track of how many time they said “f*ck buddies” but it had to have been over 20…..

I’m still going to read more, I’m hoping for some cuter romance in the next volumes

M'ha decebut força... és la típica relació que passa de sex friends a parella, però sense cap mena de química amb uns protagonistes que tenen una personalitat molt poc carismàtica (l'un egocèntric i amb por al compromís, l'altre massa dòcil i fleuma) i el teló de fons de la música queda completament descafeïnat, sense rellevància per a la trama :( no perdré el temps amb la resta de la sèrie.

Slow start but enjoyable
