Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
I'm long past the point where I know who half these characters are. There are just so damned many of them, dropping in and out depending on which of the approximately 47 plot threads Togashi has decided to focus on at the moment.

This guy is going way too far. It's way too late to be introducing so many characters. I guess there were at least 73 new people to keep track of. I honestly miss the main characters so much. Even the one who we're currently following barely shows. I don't feel any familiarity with anything anymore. This derailed horribly. I invested just so much time reading 37 fucking books to get to a point where the is opening the story, but at the same time, he has back problems that stop him from writing, so why no wrapping up the story I may be going crazy after reading this volume, people, please stop earlier than this. Other mangas sound great.
And with that, I'm caught up. The whole series in 12 days. And as of tomorrow, new chapters will start airing again! This volume was pretty good. The best chapter was by far the one where the fourth prince discovers his nen ability. And the ninth prince has some very cool stuff going on too. I'm curious to see how Kurapika's plan is going to evolve. That's about all my thoughts right now. On to weekly chapters!
3.2 - This was better than the last few volumes but I need more to happen in this arc. We're finally seeing what feels like action but even then it's very slow, full of dialogue and re-hashing nen knowledge we already know but adding onto the nen beasts that were introduced. I can't wait for volume 38 whenever we get it to see where this goes next and hopefully move closer to the dark content and what's on/in it.
Imagine a ship like the Titanic that can host 200,000 passengers. Now, imagine a serial killer on the loose or, even better, something like the Hunger Games on board. Now, wouldn't that be fun?! Well, it's not! I don't know how such an awesome concept could turn into such a boring arc! The author had an amazing idea, but he used the wrong medium. The Succession Arc is a mammoth of a story that should have been a novel. Instead, we got an unfinished manga arc whose panels are either filled with endless sentences or images of numerous characters and their names which we cannot grow to like because they'll disappear the next chapter.
Togoshi's brain is next level to even come up with and keep track of all of this! He must have the biggest corkboard in his room to map out all these people and moving parts.
Y'know what? Things are happening. It's still lots of expository, and now that the gears are moving I'm down for volume 38. I find that this is similar to the auction in terms of build up and execution this one is just a lot more involved. Most of us are just excited about the Spiders and their hunt :3
This arc has been clowned on by the pages with absurd amounts of texts, but the writing this arc is so insanely dense and thoughtout it feels inhumane.
The art is so highly inconsistent that I find it hard to decide whether I like it or not. At least the paneling is god tier, I feel like I don't need to see this animated because it's already perfectly conveyed.
It's so impressive that for all the artists that feel like they lose their magic in their later years, Yoshihiro is one of those that stays good and even gets better. It hurts that the release of new Hunter X Hunter chapters is so slow, but I can only admire Yoshihiro for having the patience to continue.
Pretty fantastic installment in the series. A lot of cool abilities explained in this volume that I’m excited to see how they play out. The background theme of the phantom troupe searching for Hisoka is also pretty awesome. Makes sense he’d be on this ship since he’s all about seeking out fights with the strongest opponents. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict he will inevitably battle the 4th Prince.
seeing what the princes are doing is so interesting and the 9th prince is INTERESTING. BUT OF COURSE. the 4th prince learning his ability and his nen beasts.... yeah this dude is gonna be a fucking PROBLEM so good luck to anyone having to deal with him
There is so much strategising in this manga- admittedly sometimes my head spins 😂😂 But I appreciate the depth of thought and creativity to manifest this ecosystem of Nen users 💪❤️

And now I'm caught up with everything released in the US for Hunter x Hunter manga. Now I join the rest of the fandom in waiting for the next chapters. Beans.
Anyway, third time through this story, still love it.
I like to rate parts of a series, especially manga volumes, relative to the rest of that series, so keep this with a grain of salt.
That being said, Hunter x Hunter is a 10/10 manga.
This is not the peak of peak, but it's still peak. Togashi is absolutely SIZZLING with the political intrigue of this plot. Everytime we switch perspectives, I groan because I want to be hearing what happens next. Every. Time. Kurapika, Tserridnich, Chrollo, Hisoka, and Morena slowly converging on one another in a cold war-esque time bomb has me biting my nails with each subsequent chapter. I cannot be normal NOR WILL I REFUSE TO BE NORMAL ABOUT THIS ARC.
The only reason it isn't 5 stars is because this isn't even the best HxH has given us. But, since I'm not going to review every single volume right now, let me give you my ranking of the HxH arcs thusfar.
- Hunter Exam: 3.5/5 . Fun, great by other manga's standards for an intro arc, but just fun otherwise.
- Killua's Family Arc: 3/5 . Probably the worst of HxH to me. It's not bad, but the conclusion of the arc feels a little unsatisfying by itself. This is where we get introduced to some of this verse's horror elements, which is one of my favourite parts of the series altogether. But, it just doesn't feel too satisfying to me. We need to find Killua. There he is. We need to open the doors. We did it. We need to get to the house. Okay, all done. There are very few twists in this part of the story, and I never really bought the others' commitment to Killua as a friend (besides Gon, of course). They generally don't have as much to do besides opening a door. Gon does literally everything else. This arc honestly just serves as a prelude to Heaven's Arena and later Yorknew with Killua's parents, but by itself, it kind of falls flat for me.
- Heaven's Arena: 3.5/5 Higher peaks. Nen as a system finally gets introduced and quickly becomes my favourite magic system in any piece of media, besides maybe Avatar.
- Yorknew: 4.75/5 . Holy moly. Everything. Just, everything. The spider's show up and do NOT disappoint. Titans clash when we've only seen beginners squabble up to this point. The world becomes so much bigger. JUST THAT CLOCK SCENE ALONE. HE BROUGHT A SHOVEL.
- Greed Island: 3.75/5. Yeah, the system is convoluted and a little dry. BUT HOLY HECK SOME OF THE FIGHTS HERE. Razor's dodgeball game had me flipping out. Genthru is by far the worst villain in the series, but his fight with Gon served the narrative in a surprisingly effective way. You can just tell that Togashi loves video games with the little exploits he writes as well. Bisky was great, the card system is used creatively. The arc kind of gets better the more you think about it. When people say it's the worst arc in the series I kind of get baffled about it. Nothing in the Hunter's exam comes close to the peaks of Greed Island. OSU!
- Chimera Ant: 5/5 . Bro you already knew this. It's long, yeah. Ikalgo's segments are a lot less entertaining. Even STILL. EVEN. STILL. This is one of the best arcs put to manga. Like, ever. You already know all the reasons why. I'm not going to get into all of it, but my favourite part might just be the royal guards and their arcs, as well as how each of them is loyal to a different version of the "king". Super interesting stuff. That and all the political commentary about a certain real-life dictatorship that I won't talk about more at risk of being put on a list. Absolutely wonderful. Probably my favourite arc of any manga that I've read.
- Chairman Election Arc: 4/5. Really nice victory lap for the series with some delicious political intrigue as the icing on top. I'm glad that the events of the Chimera Ant arc aren't just waved away as another adventure, and even if the tone doesn't carry its sense of tragedy, that almost feels more realistic to the world itself. The events of the Chimera Ant arc kind of loom over everybody as this weird, nightmarish haze. I like that. It makes going back to certain parts of this series, like Hisoka, Illumi, and the search for Ging, refreshing, yet clouded by this sense of unease. But even besides the events of the preceding arc, the Chairman Election arc stands quite firmly as a last bow for Gon and Killua's story, at least for now. Togashi flexes his political drama skills, which later go on to be a focal point in the Succession War arc, with Pariston and Ging's mental feud really standing out as the highlight of this story, besides maybe Killua's dynamic with Alluka (their reconciling scene always makes me tear up). Overall, a really great time that feels earned at this point in the story.
- Black Whale Preparation Arc (?): 3.5/5. Nothing much to note here besides a good and necessary transitional segment of the story leading into our next major arc. Fun times, but nothing to write home about. Wait, there's something else here in the fine print...what does that say? The greatest fight recorded in Shonen history??? That can't be right...
- Chrollo vs Hisoka: 5/5. YES, IT DESERVES ITS OWN SECTION. I DO *NOT* CARE IF IT TECHNICALLY IS NOT AN ARC, I HAVE READ THIS FIGHT SO MANY TIMES OVER THAT IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ONE AT THIS POINT. THE ACTION, THE LAYERING OF STRATEGIES THAT MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN, THE ART, THE GLORIOUS CONCLUSIONS AND SET UPS FOR FUTURE CONFLICTS, CHROLLO VS HISOKA WAS EVERYTHING TOGASHI COULD HAVE GIVEN US AND MORE. "Thank you, Togashi", we all say in unison. I might just go review that volume after this. This is seriously the best HxH or any action manga has to offer in the fight choreography department, and reading this with a reddit page explaining each move felt like I was reading a dissertation on how to make punches cooler.
- Succession War Arc: (4.75/5). This is still ongoing, but if what we've read thus far is anything to go off of, I think the Succession War Arc may just go down as another legendary segment on the level of the Chimera Ant Arc and Yorknew. The political intrigue goes from a rich little treat in the Chairman Election arc to OODLES of creativity dripping off of each interaction. A chess game in slow motion where each piece removed results in nail-biting tension between so many moving parts. I needed to watch so many videos just to remember the names of all the princes, but then you introduce the mafias, just Morena (I love Morena), the Troupe, the Troupe's ORIGIN, Kurapika, Melody, some random assassin that hasn't been mentioned in like, 30 chapters, Hisoka being a walking time bomb that everyone is trying to delay, all the nen beasts, incredibly rich commentary on classism and corruption (which you know I ABSOLUTELY EAT). Reading this week-to-week will go down as one of my favourite reading experiences to date. My grandchildren will ask about the theories we had on Prince Woble's nen beast, or comparing the noses of the queens to their children. This arc kind of cemented HxH as a true masterpiece in my eyes. Togashi's range of subject and tone is second to none, and I pray that he lives to be healthy and finish the story he wants to tell. Absolutely spectacular...maybe tone down the word count though.
...my bad, guys. Hyperfocus goes crazy. This series is just really special to me. I might re-read the manga start to finish and update my thoughts on each volume. We'll see. Sebastian out. I need some water.
wow how do i say this. im finally caught up with the latest chapter. hope one day we'll get the newest chapters!! but pls togashi, dont push yourself, you need to stay healthy. prioritise your health!! dont be like kurapika :(((
The first couple of chapters had some super exciting stuff going on. The king almost dies, the chill prince’s nen activates, that escape plan with the shocking dark finish, Theta nearly taking out the fourth prince. Mad stuff. I loved it. But then we kind of settle back down with a bunch of text. I was tolerant of the text heavy style to begin with, but with the last few chapters we have officially gone overboard. Especially when Togashi is adding more words to make a simple idea more confusing. The gist is that the fourth prince can see 10 seconds into the future, he can act freely to change that future, and for those 10 seconds everyone will act as if he hadn’t changed anything. That’s the main point. All this explanation and the chart make things more confusing.
Anyway I’m getting a bit weary. All the text and the start-stop approach to payoff is wearing me out. I’m conflicted, because I can see what Togashi is trying to set up. And setting all of that up without any excitement in between is going to be dull. But at the same time, I’m just ready for things to actually kick off. I thought the incident with the king almost getting shot was going to kick things off. That prince seemed ready to rampage now his nen had activated. But it didn’t come to pass. I suppose we just have to use the countdown until landfall as the our countdown until the payoff. But as it is now, I’m getting tired.
