There’s only one way to become a Fakari pack elder—defeat your biggest fear at the top of the cliffs, or die trying.

Emerson hasn’t shifted in years—but with Kieran there to keep her safe, she doesn’t have to. For a decade they’ve been inseparable, sleeping next to each other every night as friends. Yes, friends; though with Emerson’s heat around the corner, ignoring her feelings for him is harder than ever. Still, Em wants to stay nearby until the night of Kieran’s rite. After all, this is the most dangerous event on the islands…

Kieran has loved Emerson since the day they met, and completing his rite is one step closer to sharing a life. As he enters the ring, Kieran expects a swift victory, but what he encounters instead shakes him to the core. Now, his biggest concern is keeping Em out of harm’s way. But as a string of attacks confirms Kieran’s worst fears, it may be his very need to protect her that drives them apart—or Emerson’s newfound strength that finally allows them to be together.

In Her Own Rite is a steamy friends-to-lovers shifter romance about uncovering your inner strength and finally letting yourself be loved. Part of the Salt Islands series, it can be read as a stand-alone.

I had such a great time reading In Her Own Rite! The characters, while flawed, were so endearing to me as the story progressed. Emerson and Kieran went through a ton of character development in this book, from getting confronted to their own past to learning to support one another is 🤌 I really enjoyed reading about Emerson's training for her rite. I really loved seeing her becoming more confident in herself and becoming the person she is meant to be 🫶

Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance (Wolf Shifters)
3/5🌶️

Tropes and themes: MF romance, friends to lovers, found family, wolf-shifters, rich lore, forced proximity, mental health rep, trials & training, magic, and more! Some themes might be difficult for some, so please read with care.

Spoiler-free summary:
Kieran is on the cusp of his rite, a ritualistic rite of passage for shifters in his culture to be considered elders. His best friend, Emerson is on the cusp of her heat, but is pushing that aside to help Kieran prepare. Both of them are at their breaking points with keeping their feelings for each other to themselves.
After Kieran’s rite, things get complicated between them, and everything is only compounded when rouge shifters infiltrate their island and Emerson’s past comes creeping in to threaten her newfound peace.
In order to right the wrongs, Emerson will need to face a rite of her own.

Thoughts:
In Her Own Rite is a unique shifter romance with deep roots in lore and mythology that will keep you engaged from page one.

I absolutely adored the lore in this book. The rich folklore and mythology in the culture of these wolf shifters adds so much to the story and I love how everything neatly ties together. The family unit in this book is so unlike any other “pack” structure that I have ever read, and I have to say that I really loved it. In some places this read almost like an ethnography, which is basically brain p0rn to me.

Kieran and Emerson’s story is one of self acceptance, perseverance, and forgiveness. I really adored their friend to lovers arc and I think the author did a wonderful job of allowing the two MCs to grow independently of each other, as well as together. The mutual pining was so delicious and I think that their coming together was well done and genuine.

Emerson, the FMC, is definitely the star of this book. Her personal growth is phenomenal and I enjoyed rooting for her the entire time. As for Kieran, my feelings for him ran the gambit. At times, I was swooning, at others, I was ready to throttle him for his actions. In the end, he learns his lessons and makes peace with himself and the reader, but it was a bumpy ride, I assure you. I think this made the conclusion all the more satisfying.

All in all, I truly enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more in this series.

WOW. WOW. WOW.

I found myself utterly DEVOURING this book! “In Her Own Rite” is simply beautiful—the world that Rowan has created is so intricately crafted that it just sucks you right into the warmth and culture-rich Fakari pack. I’m always a sucker for a GOOD wolf shifter story and I absolutely adored this one and found myself thoroughly invested in all the deep lore around their world.

The characters are so warm and very lovingly brought to life to be strong, flawed and deeply human which is such a joy to read. Emerson and Kieran (the two MC’s) are wonderful storytellers and their dual POV worked flawlessly in this story. As much as I adored both of them as individuals, and as mates, I also found myself growing attached to the “minor” characters and getting just as invested in their stories too—and I’m very excited to know that the following books in the series will be exploring some of these characters in more depth!

Another thing I really loved about “In Her Own Rite” was the rich culture that was created. Filled with their own ancestral traditions, roots and values as well as a language that’s explored and explained throughout the book for the reader to learn and enjoy. I really felt like I was delving deeper into this wonderful world of wolf shifters and their pack with every turn of the page.

There are a few GREAT spicy moments in this book too, but they were definitely treated with respect and weren’t just thrown in there for the sake of it—every moment had it’s purpose and it didn’t detract from the story whatsoever. I actually found myself attracted more to the plot and the story rather than the spice as I truely loved the world in which Rowan Wilder has masterfully painted, but they WERE a delightful bonus!

This book has some overall cozy vibes, but it also does deal with a few darker themes that play a pretty big role in the book as a whole. Emerson’s character growth and plot, in particular, deals heavily with parental abuse, the death of a parent as well as some pretty significant trauma; and although it’s not OVERLY detailed or heavy on page, it does carry a darker tone that might be triggering for some readers. There are also a few other triggers/content warnings that I will list below.

━━ † ━━

⚔️TRIGGER LIST⚔️

— Drug use and its effects and after effects (hallucinogenic herbal ritual liquid called kattaka)
— Blood and violence
— Explicit sex scenes
— Mentions of spousal abuse (historical)
— Mentions of the death of a parent from illness (historical)
— Mentions of being disowned (historical and on page)
— Medical procedures
— Trauma and PTSD
— Chronic pain and injury

━━ † ━━

“In Her Own Rite” is a beautiful story of found family, friendship, the bonds of a pack, finding one’s inner strength to overcome trauma and adversity, sadness and grief…and amongst all that, discovering what it is to love and be loved in return.

It is STUNNING and I absolutely adored every moment of it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get sucked into a world rich in culture, characters, relationships and the messy but beautiful nature of humanity. 5/5 stars!!

“In Her Own Rite” by Rowan Wilder

4⭐️/5⭐️
2.5🌶/5🌶

“Will you love me? he asks. “Will you let me love you?”

-This is one of the most unique shifter romances I’ve ever read. Don’t expect any omegaverse elements to this story, the author based the shifter aspect on how real wolf packs operate. Family/pack is everything, and it’s a mixture of a found family and blood relations. I love the found family trope, so I really enjoyed reading about the structure of Emerson’s fika.

-Speaking of fika, I love how the author created this world. There’s definitely influences from Danish culture, Scandinavian culture, and she said on Instagram Ireland and Nova Scotia as well. All of the references come across as respectful of the original influence; like the author is paying homage. There’s a language and culture specific for this wolf shifter community, and I have to give the author major kudos, she does such a good job guiding readers in the beginning of the story, so by the end every Fakari word is easy to translate automatically, and all of the customs make total sense.

-This is what I would describe as a reverse slow burn, meaning the smut occurs in the first part of the story arc, there’s conflict which prevents any additional smut, and then readers get a resolution. I’m not sure I’ve ever read a reverse slow burn romance before, but I found myself not even noticing that there was a lack of spice in the middle of the story. The conflict all the characters are facing takes precedence, so to have a quick smut break would feel extremely off-putting.

-Reading Emerson’s personal journey as she makes peace with her childhood trauma, and how it affects her ability to shift, makes me view shifter romances in a new light. I never considered how uncomfortable it would feel to be in your shifted form, and the claustrophobia, the loss of human identity; I would probably have a panic attack.

-The author does an excellent job setting up future books in the series, making me all the more excited to continue. There are twists and turns as the reader approaches the climax of the story, I was kept on my toes the whole time.

-Overall, I highly recommend this book if you like shifter romances but don’t care for the omegaverse elements. It’s angsty, but not over the top, lots of cozy aspects too, and the world building is very creative and impressive. “In Her Own Rite” will be released on February 8th.

Rating Vibes: Obsessed

Thank you to Rowan for reaching out to read this ARC. I seriously loved every second of this book. I had the bare minimum information about this book when I started and I think that made it so much better. The main premise is that they are wolf shifters on an island. Emerson and Kieran are best friends (turning more 😏) who, along with their friends, want to move out into their own fikarig (pack home) and out of their family's place. There are plenty of challenges along the way, people trying to invade their island, injuries, Emerson being one of the weaker shifters and smaller - that lead to Emerson's rite.

I absolutely adored Emerson. How she started as this weak person who needed people to protect her, and she even protected herself a bit from things, to fighting for her ability to do the rite, working her ass off and showing how strong she is mentally, emotionally, and physically. I loved seeing her growth and that truly was the best part of the book. I cannot wait until the other books come out. Consider me a fan!

I feel so lucky that I was given a chance to read an ARC of Rowan Wilder’s In Her Own Rite. I can safely say that this first installment in the Fakari Islands trilogy was not only a standout in its own rite (I swear I didn’t plan that) but has also set a new bar for me when it comes to shifter romance.

Emerson and Kieran’s story is tender, hopeful and emotional while being wrapped up in some intense and messy real world topics like isolationism, grief, and generational trauma. Their experiences and growth in In Her Own Rite help to heal some of those wounds with a beautiful story about found family, finding one’s strength and acknowledging the past while wanting better for the future.

Communication is key in telling a story like Em and Kier’s, and Wilder’s dialogue is a delight to read. It’s natural, it flows and even in moments where emotions are running high, it’s reflective of loving those around you even while butting heads or struggling to find the right thing to say.

Wilder’s skills don’t stop there. Her world building is also superb. Details like the descriptions of traditional food and the myth of the warrior Tayyakuk and goddess Móra make the Fakari islands feel like a place that is deeply and firmly rooted in our world while still being a place and culture unto itself.

We’re introduced to so many characters to root for, be intrigued by, or be wary of, but they all have one thing in common: I want to know more about them. All of them. Especially the strong female characters that flank Emerson, like Saga, Maren and Quinn.

Wilder is such a thoughtful author, and her attention to detail doesn’t stop with the world, characters, and relationships she’s created. She goes the extra mile to further immerse readers by including a family tree, a Fakari dictionary, a reader’s guide, and a beautiful map. (A map that may or may not hold a hint about next book…)

I’m beyond thrilled that we have Worth His Salt and Mates of Convenience to look forward to this year. I don’t think I could go any longer without knowing more about the characters and world I’ve fallen in love with (especially a certain shifter who’s comfortable in the kitchen and happens to be keeping a few secrets of his own).

I consider myself so lucky to have received an ARC of this book. In Her Own Rite is the first Rowan Wilder book I’ve read, and it will not be the last! I don’t generally read book descriptions before picking up a book; I’m here for the vibes and the writing.

You’ll love In Her Own Rite if you enjoy:
- forced proximity
- friends to lovers
- found family
- sexy scenes

At first, there were a lot of characters, and I was worried about remembering who was who. The character development throughout the book really helped make each secondary/tertiary character stand out to me. I can’t wait to read their stories as the series progresses.

Overall, an excellent start to 2024 for me.

My first 5 star read of the year and you know what? The wait was worth it.

I was introduced to this book through many of my Instagram mutuals who read and reviewed early copies. I didn't really know much about the overall premise besides that it was a friends-to-lovers shifter romance and everyone was raving about it, so on a whim, I preordered it last minute. I just had that feeling that it was going to be something special and boy, it really was!

This is a book I will be thinking about for a long, long time; and simultaneously, I don't have any words to describe it. This book was utter perfection. It pulls you in from the very first page and I couldn't put it down, I could smell Gabe's cooking and the herbal balms, could feel the brisk air and see the kiyyulit. The story plot and pacing is startlingly perfect, it never once dragged or felt bogged down by clunky world building or unnecessary information. The characters were imperfect, real, and honest. I especially felt very connected to Emerson in particular, but every single character leaves a mark and leaves you wanting their story.

The world of the Fakari islands is incredibly vivid and beautiful. I can tell so much work went into the lore and culture and it really pays off. This is a pretty unique shifter book and I really liked the communal pack structure in particular.

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I eagerly await more of the story. I only wish I was reading it on the Fakaris in my own fikarig.

✨ My Thoughts ✨
What a beautiful story about finding your own strength. It also had a beautiful love story too. I couldn't put this one down. The lore of this book was so so cool. It felt unique to me. I was excited to learn more. Shifter romance books are one of my comfort reads. This one didn't disappoint. I enjoyed the found family in the book too. Emerson is absolutely a fantastic FMC. Her story in this book was beautiful to read. To see grow in strength and in her relationship was one of my favorite parts of the book. Kieran was MMC I couldn't help but love. He definitely has ups and downs in this book but in the end he works everything out. He also learned a lot himself too. The best friend to lovers story was so so good. The spice was just perfect. This might be a wired way to describe a book but this book felt like home. It was just the perfect amount of cozy but still had suspense. I can't recommend this book enough. If you love shifter romance then this one you should definitely add to your list.

In Her Own Rite is book one Fakari Island series by @rowanwilderromance. This book is recommended for 18+. As always please check TW before reading.

✨ I want to thank the author for this ARC. These are my own true thoughts. It was such an amazing chance to read this beautiful book. ✨

In Her Own Rite has a lot of things I love, friend to lovers, fated mates, found family, and a strong FMC with some of the best character growth I’ve read. Emerson is a shifter that hasn’t shifted in over a decade due to her traumatic past. I loved seeing her grow with the help of her Fika (pack) and of course finally talk to her best friend Kieran about how they both feel. Their relationship felt so relatable and I loved their journey. This was such a beautiful story about overcoming your weaknesses and finding your own strength and I’ll be thinking of this one a lot going forward. I can’t wait to read Seb and Maren’s story, but my heart broke for Gabe! I know his is going to hurt my feelings but I’m going to love every moment!

This book came out earlier this year and I have seen so many of my book besties say nothing but good things about this book... so of course I had to try it out!

This book is for you if you love:
*forced proximity
*best friends to lovers
*wolf shifters
*only one... house
*fated mates
*found family
*steamy spice
*female empowerment

This book was refreshing in that both the MMC and the FMC are flawed, and both of them do a lot of growing up in the book. There is so much healing that goes on in this book (both physically and emotionally) that I came away feeling like I grew up and healed while reading it! I understand now why everyone loves it so much!

If your friend group jokes about living on a farm together, MOVE TO THE FAKARIS, where the men talk about their feelings and everyone gets community care.

(Disclaimer: I received an advanced reader copy of this book to review.)

I absolutely loved this book. The story follows Kieran and Emerson, who have grown up together and are desperately trying to hide their feelings for each other. At the start of the story Em is close to going into her annual heat, but she can't leave like she usually does because she needs to stay close for Kiearn's elder rite—a dangerous event where he'll climb to the island's cliffs to overcome his greatest weakness. Kieran goes up to the cliffs cocky, but comes back terrified, both of what he's seen and what it might mean for Em's safety.

That rite sets a series of events into motion that brings Em and their friends into danger, and challenges her to confront her own weaknesses and step into her own strength. It's friends-to-lovers but it's more than that: this is also a story about two people who both go through their own character growth arc, and that allows them to finally be together. I love friends-to-lovers and I really liked that this story had an unusual angle—the big relationship tension wasn't just about admitting their feelings for each other, but learning how to have a healthy relationship where they can be stronger together than they are apart. And no spoilers but the sex was 🥵 and the grovel was *chefs kiss*.

One other part I really loved was the creative world-building. The world was super immersive and felt really unique. Come for the love story, stay for the fikarigs and the kiyyulit.

Rich Icelandic influence and shifter lore.

Swoony best-friends-to-lovers set in a rich and incredibly developed shifter culture. On the Fakari islands, generations of wolf-shifters live openly. Instead of multi-generational homes, pack members live in multi-family homes. So that's how the fmc Emerson grows up with three shifter boys she is not related to. While some become like brothers, Kieran becomes her best friend and secret crush.

In order to become a voting member in the pack, wolves must complete a solo ritual that ends with a wrestle against the ancestral spirits. Kieran believed it was a metaphorical wrestle until his friend nearly died in his own trial. And when Emerson decides to make the same journey, Kieran worries that she won't survived.

Em has lived as a weaker member of the pack her entire life. Kieran's fear for her success wounds her confidence and has her questioning their future together. They both have to tackle their fears to let go of the past and move forward.

I devoured the communal living, rites of passage and less-obvious mating bond. Definitely a well-written addition to the shifter universe. If you've read Bessa by Rachelle Mills, you will appreciate the same depth of tradition that Wilder created with more restrained violence.

"In Her Own Rite" is a captivating blend of romance, personal growth, and imaginative world-building.

The narrative orbits around Kieran and Emerson, childhood friends teetering on the brink of love, set against the lush backdrop of the Fakari Islands. The novel begins with Emerson's struggle to manage her impending annual heat and her commitment to Kieran's elder rite, a perilous tradition requiring him to confront his deepest fears. This rite, a pivotal moment in the story, not only shapes Kieran's character but also triggers a series of events that test the resilience and bond of the duo and their friends.

What stands out in this narrative is the dual journey of Kieran and Emerson. Both characters, intricately crafted, undergo significant personal growth. Their evolution is not just about acknowledging their feelings for each other, but about learning to build a healthy, supportive relationship.

Rowan Wilder skillfully weaves in themes of confronting one's weaknesses and emerging stronger.

The love story, simmering with tension and passion, is beautifully narrated. It transcends the usual tropes of a friends-to-lovers romance by embedding deeper emotional growth and understanding, creating a connection that feels both real and heartwarming.

The secondary characters are equally well-developed, adding layers to the narrative and promising exciting expansions in future books of the series.
(I'm in love with Quinn! Where can I get her number?)

Another commendable aspect is the book's world-building. The Fakari Islands come alive with unique flora and fauna, creating an immersive experience. The cultural and societal norms of this world are thoughtfully developed, adding depth to the story.

If you love shifters but hate all the omegaverse alpha hole drama... this is for you. Rowan brings us Emerson, a shifter who hasn't shifted in over a decade, with a traumatic past. Kieran, a bold and strong shifter on the surface but deep down is battling his own trauma and fears. These two best friends have done it all together... except communicate how they really feel. The build up was slow and delicious with all the flashbacks but a great pace in present tense reading. You won't have to wait long for the angst and it will have you salivating for more. We also meet the rest of the Fika, pack, and each character is thoughtfully written and have their own charm. You will seriously love every character. The ancestry and culture is rich but never confusing. The language of the Fakari is enticing and Rowan gives you context cues and a guide at the back of the book so you can immerse yourself in it without being confused. Em and Kier's love story is one you will not soon forget. It is packed full of life lessons that will stick with you. This is such a beautiful and life altering (yes, life altering) read. I will hold this story near and dear to my heart for a very long time. Rowan you have such a stunning way with words and I can feel the love and energy you put into this on every page. Phenomenal. Infinite stars. I cannot wait for Maren and Seb's story but even more so- I neeeeeed Gabe's story. I just know that one is going to hurt in the best ways.

❤️ Romance vibes ❤️
Mutual pining, friends to lovers, fated mates, conflict and growth, romantic gestures

🌶️ 2.25/5 ~ spice level
☠️ 2/5 ~ darkness rating

🐺 In Her Own Rite was a cool read! I enjoyed the way that the Fakari rite, in which a participant needs to face their biggest fear and weakness, served as a catalyst for character, romance, and political developments in the book.

🐺 ✨The MCs ✨Emerson is a healer in training, who hasn’t shifted since childhood due to some difficult experiences. Kieran is a designer/carpenter, who is about to attempt the rite. The steamy tension of their mutual pining boils over early in this book (the spice is realistic & good! 🥵), and then there is some interesting work to do on if and how they can actually be more than friends. I enjoyed how strong willed they both are and the ways in which they each grew.

🐺 Their friend, Maren, who is half Fakari, had me laughing at many moments. Bless her for bringing Triscuits and humor to the islands. 😂

🐺 I found the world building was very effective and interesting, especially with the elements of generational and geographic conflicts, language, and ancestral magic — a great setup for an ongoing series!

🐺 For the ending, I found myself with some questions that I think may be left for the second book, but it was not at all a cliffhanger. I do recommend getting the little bonus spice newsletter; I would have loved to see it included in the book!

💗 Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this as an ARC! The book is available for pre-order at B&N, Waterstones, and the ‘zon

Things this book did for me:
- made me cry multiple times
- motivated me to do cardio
- inspired conversations with my closest friends about trust, forgiveness, and the nature of feminine strength
- gave me dreams about Kieran (no, literally, this happened last night)

In Her Own Rite is a story about a woman, Emerson, whose chief strength is in her ability to love and heal, and the ways that she finally applies those gifts to herself. It's also a story about a giant sexy redheaded man wolf, Kieran, who just wants to protect her (SO MUCH), but keeps getting in his own way. And when they collide????????????? Y'all. That was where I cried.

I don't usually go for friends-to-lovers stories, but this one spoke to something deep in my soul. If romance as a genre has historically been about women choosing to radically honor their desires for love, sex, and connection, then this book is about how love is its own strength. Emerson is strong because she is soft and vulnerable where it counts. And Kieran is strong when he stops being such a dumdum and sees that in her.

Add to this a delicious cast of sexy supporting characters and a lore-heavy setting so magical that it has its own language/religion/mythology, and I was *hooked.* This is book 2 in the series, with book 1 set to release in the near future, and I cannot WAIT to see what secrets the Fakari Islands have in store.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

In Her Own Rite by Rowan Wilder is a best friends to lovers shifter romance. I loved this one! First of all the world building with its unique culture, language and customs really made this one interesting and you can tell Rowan put a lot of thought and research into her book. If you know me you know friends to lovers isn’t my favorite trope. I thought it was done perfectly between Emerson and Kieran. There was so much tension and longing but we also get a bit of their backstory and who they are.

I think what I loved about this book the most, that it felt so different from other shifter romances. Like a breath of fresh air. Rowan really focused on the main character’s communication and there was no 3rd act breakup. It’s also such a great story about strength. I really enjoyed reading about Emerson coming into her own and growing from her trauma. Even with its high stakes you can expect some cozy beach vibes that will make this the perfect book to get you out of your reading slump or if you’re looking for something different! I recommend checking this book out February 8th!

Emerson and Kieran are both werewolves on the edge of becoming leaders of their community, and in order to do so, they need to complete a rite, which is dangerous. Emerson and Kieran have been friends for a long time, both with deep feelings for the other that might be more than just friendly. In order to become the people they've always been meant to be, Kieran needs to believe in Emerson as much as she believes in herself. And, at the beginning of the story, Emerson is going into heat, which obviously complicates things!

I had the joy of buddy reading this with the fabulous Liezl of Liezllovesbooks. She and I found that we were often confused by the plot. This book is the first released in the series, despite the fact that it's technically the second book, and it sets up the third book. 🤷🏻 I never got a great sense of the way their world worked. I also had a great deal of difficulty liking Emerson. I LOVED Kieran!

Trigger warnings: dysfunctional family dynamics, physical abuse, child abuse, neglect, emotional abuse, bones being broken (not too gruesome), as well as some other injuries/scarring/bleeding

I’m at a loss for words to adequately describe just how much I loved this story. It was more than just a book, it was an emotional experience. These characters carved out a little place in my heart and I can’t wait to read more from this world. 🐺🌸

This is a wolf shifter, friends-to-lovers, soulmates romance with mutual pining, a protective MMC, and exceptional found family. It is unique in that pack lore plays a huge role throughout— it means everything to these characters, and it’s what sets it apart from any other shifter romance.

Rowan’s writing is absolutely beautiful! You can just tell so much thought and intention went into creating this world and these characters, everything that happens in this story just felt right..I don’t know how else to explain it. It makes you wanna sell off all your worldly possessions and buy a one way ticket to this fictional island and stay there forever..if only it were real 😭😭

I don’t know what else to say other than, read this! And if you’re not a shifter type of girly, don’t even worry about it, I promise you it’s not at all complicated. I recommend finding a nice cozy reading spot at home and just diving in!

Y’all, my heart! This book touches your soul. It is so so good. I’m going to be honest I had no clue what I was going into when I started this one. But good googly-moogly man, I was swept away by Rowan’s writing.
I lost all track of time, legit got nothing done. My emotions got the best of me in this one, tears. They were beautiful tears though.

The story is told, in dual POV by the MCs Kieran and Emerson. It takes place on the Fakiri islands and it’s absolutely gorgeous there. The world that Rowan built is thick with unique culture and customs. I love that she put a family tree in the beginning of the book and at the end you find a readers guide, as well as a Fakiri dictionary. You can really see just how much thought went into writing this book.

The tension and buildup of Emerson and Kieran‘s relationship is phenomenal. Yes, it’s a shifter romance, but it’s oh so much more. It’s a story of strength, growth and healing. You’ve got to read this one y’all!

In a genre filled with cookie cutter world building, this author created something new and I loved it.

Set on fictional islands off the coast of a northern mainland featuring unique pack dynamics with a devotion to their ancestral island history and their current community. They’re isolationists and that creates tension with outsiders while also becoming a key pressure point generationally.

The MCs are childhood friends each longing for and depending on the other. They’re sweet together and it’s easy to see they are each other’s comfort. She relies on him for a sense of safety, he positions himself as her protector. This eventually becomes stifling for their relationship but growth comes from discomfort and lays the framework for their character arcs.

I thought it was choppy between the 20-40% mark there’s a bit too much telling vs showing but it pulls together for the latter part of the narrative and finishes strong.

This was wonderful but, without revealing spoilers, I got to the end just now and said “that’s IT?!”
I’m gonna need to know what the hell happened after that last council meeting Rowan.
I need to know how THAT little piece panned out like, immediately.

4 stars.
I went into this with zero preconceived notions about what to expect, and it exceeded all of my non-existant expectations.

HEA, with a sort-of cliff hanger I guess you can call it.. basically, I’m pleased with where our FMC and MMC ended up, but I’ve still got questions lmao

I’ve added ‘worth his salt’ to my TBR, and will absolutely be reading that as soon as it drops next month. x (though if Gabe and his life isn’t featured in it at least a little bit, I’m gonna be pissed.)

Take me to the Fakari Islands.
This story is top-tier friends-to-lovers, blanketed by shifter found family, interweaved with loss and found self. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The world-building was seamless and the story flowed beautifully between the present shifter culture and the history of their ancestors. I was so moved by people and families brought together, the relationships created not just by blood but through shared, and sometimes traumatic, bonds. This book has me riding emotional wave after wave, tears streaming, and I loved it. And the main characters only made the story that much better. I am in awe of Em and her inner strength. And I’m absolutely enamored with Kier and his innate sense to care and protect.
I can’t WAIT to see what happens next in the Fakari Islands. I’m ready. Are you?

Whatever magic the author put in this story really worked out. I loved Em and Kieran! He's the stern protector, but also learns a dose or humility when Em proves she can take care of herself. We love a story where there's character growth, and IHOR had heaps of it! From learning your place in the pack, to training for the island's hardest challenge on a time crunch, to defeating your biggest weakness, this story had it all. I loved the found family dynamic and cannot wait for Seb and Maren's story! The unique world-building also had me intrigued. I'd love a Fakari Islands guide! Or some more art!

I thought this was a very unique shifter universe! At least it was unlike any other shifter book I’ve read lol.
I enjoyed this story so much! Although Best friends to lovers isn't my go to trope of choice I still very much enjoyed Em and Keirs love story 🥰but it is best friends to lovers so be prepared for the a bit of the miscommunication and missed opportunities that typically come with the trope😉
I enjoyed the lore and ancestry that the Fakari islands provided and can’t wait to learn more in the next books!

I do wish certain aspects of the story had been paced a little better so we could have more time with Keir and Em😅

This was such a good read!!! The writing was so great and the way that the Fakari culture was engrained into every aspect of the characters was AMAZING!! I love the amount of detail that the author put into planning this book; it is SO evident!! There’s a map, chronology, glossary, rich history, etc. This was such an easy and enjoyable read and I love that it can be read as a standalone or also as a part of a series. The character growth was flawless and it was very nice reading a friends-to-lovers romance in the midst of all of the enemies-to-lovers hype 🤪

Wilder does an incredible job of building this slow-burn romance in a friends-to-lovers story that will have you ignoring everyone and everything in your surroundings until you finish.

I got everything I wanted from this book and more:
- the sweet friends-to-lovers story
- steamy pining for days
- fleshed-out characters I cared about and could root for
- immaculate world-building from an author who clearly does the work
- deeply satisfying sex (thanks)

I can't wait to see what Wilder publishes next. Definitely don't miss this read!
