Spoiler-free summary:
Kieran is on the cusp of his rite, a ritualistic rite of passage for shifters in his culture to be considered elders. His best friend, Emerson is on the cusp of her heat, but is pushing that aside to help Kieran prepare. Both of them are at their breaking points with keeping their feelings for each other to themselves.
After Kieran’s rite, things get complicated between them, and everything is only compounded when rouge shifters infiltrate their island and Emerson’s past comes creeping in to threaten her newfound peace.
In order to right the wrongs, Emerson will need to face a rite of her own.
Thoughts:
In Her Own Rite is a unique shifter romance with deep roots in lore and mythology that will keep you engaged from page one.
I absolutely adored the lore in this book. The rich folklore and mythology in the culture of these wolf shifters adds so much to the story and I love how everything neatly ties together. The family unit in this book is so unlike any other “pack” structure that I have ever read, and I have to say that I really loved it. In some places this read almost like an ethnography, which is basically brain p0rn to me.
Kieran and Emerson’s story is one of self acceptance, perseverance, and forgiveness. I really adored their friend to lovers arc and I think the author did a wonderful job of allowing the two MCs to grow independently of each other, as well as together. The mutual pining was so delicious and I think that their coming together was well done and genuine.
Emerson, the FMC, is definitely the star of this book. Her personal growth is phenomenal and I enjoyed rooting for her the entire time. As for Kieran, my feelings for him ran the gambit. At times, I was swooning, at others, I was ready to throttle him for his actions. In the end, he learns his lessons and makes peace with himself and the reader, but it was a bumpy ride, I assure you. I think this made the conclusion all the more satisfying.
All in all, I truly enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more in this series.
