Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Anthony Tyrone "Tony" Evans Sr. is an American evangelical pastor, speaker, author, and widely syndicated radio and television broadcaster in the United States. Between 1976 and 2024, Evans served as senior pastor at the over-9,500-member Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas.
One of my favorite things to do while praying or meditating on Jesus is to go through and recite his various “names” mentioned throughout the Bible. (I put names in quotations because God has only one name: Jesus. All others are titles.) This is a nice little book to have that lists all of those titles and their corresponding scriptures. Each one has an accompanying prayer that Evans wrote. You could model your own prayer after it if you’re just learning how to pray, or you could just treat it as a bible study/meditation.
Praying through the Names of God By Tony Evans Publisher: Harvest House Publishers
Praying through the Names of God is a comprehensive list and description of the names of God in the Scriptures.
For each of the 85 different names, there is a description, revelation as to the intent and meaning of the name, and a relevant prayer that could be used.
Rather than a deep theological book on the names of God, it is a prayer book for the different situations and circumstances of people’s lives.
An excellent book for people looking at using the name of God in prayer.
I have thoroughly enjoyed learning all these names of God more intimately and using this book in my devotional prayer time each morning. Highly recommend!
Excellent Book of Prayers Focusing on the Many Names of God
The prayers in this book are really wonderfully inspiring. They lean heavily on scriptures and help you to focus and meditate on each individual name of God.
Each prayer is focused on one of the names of God, and is divided into four parts: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. I liked this arrangement. After the heading for the prayer (i.e. the name) there is one Bible verse which shows one place where that specific name of God is found in the Bible.
There are two things I wish this book did that I think would make it a lot better. First, right after the heading, it would be most helpful to have the pronunciation of the name of God. I presume the names are in Hebrew, although I’m not sure that is made clear. But even though I’m reading the prayers silently, I’m sure I am mispronouncing many of them in my head! Second, at the end of each prayer, it would be extremely helpful to have the Biblical scriptures listed and written in their entirety. As I mentioned, the prayers are very heavily scripture-based, but there is no citations in the prayers as to where those scriptures are found in the Bible. Not even the Book, Chapter & verse, let alone the entire scripture. Although one could argue that they are paraphrased rather than exact quotes, I recognize them as scripture and it would be nice to have the verses right there below the prayers. If the book is ever revised, I hope the author will consider doing this.
Thanks you Dr Evans for such a awesome book Praying the Names of GOD! I was blown away by taking one Name of GOD and praying through it, sometimes meditating on it to refresh and strength myself in the many Names of GOD, I only knew of a few of His Names but now I have a greater understanding and more revelation of Who He really is. His Name has an answer for every problem in our lives, we never need to fear at any time about anything because He is everything that we will ever need. He is our exceeding great reward so we should always be thoroughly furnished lacking NOTHING! Thanks you Dr Evans this book has changed my life! I would recommend this book to every Christian who really want to know GOD better and His many attributes and promises of Who He is. I gave this book five stars because it gave me lots of knowledge to call on a Holy GOD for every situation in my life, and I know He WILL answer me! 🙌🙌❤️❤️👍👍
This is an excellent choice for daily devotional prayrer. In addition to learning the many names of God, it is a powerful resource for those that want to go deeper in their prayer life. It's framewrok for prayer: Adoration...worshipping God using one of the may names for God. Confession...aknowledging sin and repenting. Thanksginving...thanking God for in new and different ways daily. Supplication...prayer requests.
Thank you DR Evans! Along with daily reading of Psalms and Proverbs, I will add Praying Through The Names of God to this list as a reminder how unique and awesome our God really is. My goal is to know the names of God by heart, pun intended. Thank you for allowing God to use you to write this great book.
Many people don’t really know God. Millions say they believe but there’s no faith in it, “just give me this, give me that” kind of prayers. We get so distracted of the world around us that we forget to be thankful for the creator of all and when we experienced hardship that’s just when we remembered God. I appreciate that this book shows who God is and how we should really pray.
I’ve been told if you want grow in prayer then read and pray the prayers of giants. This book accomplished that purpose for me. New light went down unexplored alleys of my soul. I saw new heights of God’s glory and dove to new depths of his love. Dr. Evans writes in such a way that all Christians can relate and connect with these prayers.
This book is such a blessing introducing the reader the values of the names of God and their meaning while we pray. I love this concept of leaning in to who God is through His names instead of a god we create with our own knowledge or traditions.
This was a nice addition to morning prayer and meditation. Read a one paragraph or a few pages at a time. Not meant to read straight through. Each prayer is a short paragraph. Prayers you can go back to over and over, and I’m sure I will again, each based on a verse about who God is.
Loved learning all the Names of God and using the prayer model to pray effective prayers, making sure to put Him first. To admit my shortcomings, my sinful thoughts, my selfishness and ask for God to transform me to who He created me to become.
I used this book daily for prayer. This allowed me to practice the prayer model that I love to use (ACTS) and then find scripture that has the names of God in it. This was a delight to pray through. It helped me grow closer to God and help me to have a richer and healthier prayer life.
This is a good book to have at your fingertips. I read this an ebook. I would like to have a hard copy to make it easier for me to pick it up and read.
This is a wonderful book that I come back to again and again. Initially I purchased this book because my heart was longing to spend time praising God for Who He is. So I went through the book, one chapter a day. Evans did such a good job with writing the prayers that I felt like these were the prayers of my heart. Since then I’ve repeatedly returned to the book as my heart will sometimes draw me to it again during my morning time with God.
This was a wonderful book that I use almost everyday in my devotions. The book reveals the character of God. I completed the book one time and I am going through it again.
I still turn to this book for inspiration, prayer suggestions for others, and when I need to focus on a topic. I appreciate Dr. Evan's various examples which helps the reader become comfortable using the names of God on their own.
