Another Side of Midnight

Rate this book
Two months, two weeks and four days ago, Steele woke up alone in a hotel room. All Stone left was a note—and a lot of questions. He's back, and she wants answers—but he wants more.

Smart-mouthed Vegas private eye Estella 'Steele' Mezzanotte is used to all kinds of trouble. She's nursing another black eye from her bartending sideline, her mom's dropping hints about nice Italian boys and Midnight Investigation Services is struggling. Otherwise, Steele would never have accepted her current gig—suspected adultery, maybe embezzlement. Possibly murder. Her ex, Cameron Stone, wants to partner. Steele wants to punish him for past misdemeanors.

But she's got to trust him or risk facing another side of danger alone—.

About the author

Mia Zachary

Over the years, award-winning author Mia Zachary has penned really bad poetry, even worse song lyrics, adolescent short stories and overly descriptive class papers. She had written several chapters for a medieval romance, but credits her husband with suggesting that a modern timeframe might help her focus more on the story than the setting.

Her first completed contemporary manuscript placed second in Harlequin Books 2000 Summer Blaze contest. She's written four Blaze novels since then, including AFTERNOON DELIGHT (April 2006) and is under contract for two more Blazes (tba), as well as a romantic mystery (March 2007) and a paranormal novella (Oct 2007) for Harlequin Special Releases.

Steele Mezzarotte finds herself mysteriously tied to a gorgeous Scotsman while trying to find the trail to missing money in the dredges of Sin City in Mia Zachery's new book, THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT.

Stella Mezzarotte is a PI with a serious attitude problem. Not a problem to her, just everyone else she runs into! She's a self-confessed alcoholic who wears t-shirts with funny quips on them and sings as loud as she can even though she can't hold a tune. Reminiscent of Sara Paretsky's VI Warshawski's character, Steele is funny and tough. She runs her own Investigation Agency fronted by a romance-writing gay man with a protective streak.

Cameron Stone is a Scotsman with a past. Did I mention he's super hot? Mia Zachery has created a character to truly drool over. A James Bond type with a secret military past. He and Steele get themselves in a prickly situation that ties them together, and that's not a bad thing. His attempt to woo her is out of the ordinary, but certainly keeping the economy in business.

The problem? Steele is in trouble; Cameron wants to protect her. But she's a big girl with her own stash of iron big girl panties and doesn't want anything from this gorgeous Brit. Set in Las Vegas, THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT, is a fun read with amazing characters. This book is worth it to see Stella and Cameron heat up the pages together and undergo a bumbling courtship which I found myself highly envious of. Zachery's characters are well developed, funny and I found myself rooting for them every bit of the way.

This book was *fine.* The mystery wasn't super mysterious, and the main character tried too hard to be edgy and dark. Stone was a delight - it ended up being a little spicy. The perspective switching between chapters was a little hard to keep up with, but it feels like that could have been fixed in editing and labeling whose perspective the chapter was being told from. All-in-all, it's fine book to get you out of a reading slump.
