Very good military fantasy
This book covers the showdown between an imperial family and their aristocracy. Guns and magic trade blows until the end, the balance being tilted by an outworlder with extensive knowledge of the art of war. The story is carried out by less introspection (still too much, I think!), and more dialog than usual for the author. The emotions the characters should feel should be better expressed.
I hope that we'll have further development of the story line, maybe even some crossing of the threads..?

I am a big fan of Christopher Nuttall's magic series and I like this series too for some reasons that are the same such as the good writing, tight plot and realistic characters. Also for different reasons such as seeing how modem military tactics fare in world from ages past where cavalry is still king.
Christopher Nuttall is a supreme storyteller and this book as all his others does not disappoint. In my opinion never having read Christopher Nuttall is like never having eaten Thai food - ain't gonna kill you but you will be missing out on a great experience. Recommended, of course!

Excellent!
If you didn't start with the first book of "stuck in magic" I would start there. This book reads better with the background.
The Author makes a great case for a trained modern Army over the previous medieval approaches. And using the self interest of the commoners to drive economic growth.
He usually catches the few typos I found better than this.
A satisfying finish to this trilogy.
Enjoy.

Great Ending of the Series
I love all 3 of these books. It's not the one I would have written but you're afterward says why and it is a good reason. But then I wouldn't have killed his to wife either and had him capture the warlords. But I like your ending to. Maybe I gave to much away lol. I'll just have to wait to see if you continue his tale.

Modern meets the Old
I enjoy these stories because Elliot is an everyman. He is not a dragon riding uber powerful prince or princess. Elliot has two advantages in the unknown world. The first is his experience in a modern military and second, his ability to observe and adapt to the environment in which he finds himself. I look forward to seeing where his journey takes him next.

What an ending to this three book story arc. I hope we hear more about Elliott continued adventures and how VIOLET who seems like has become Elliott daughter even if he doesn't recognize it. Also has role to play in another story arc. Will he ever get to meet Emily

not to my taste
I did not like the book. Nothing wrong with the writing or storyline as I have enjoyed both the Schooled in Magic and Stuck in Magic series’s. I suppose the references to all the military tactics and wars were too much for me

fun fantasy vs ringo style combat
Nuttall neatly avoids the “magic can solve anything” trope by limiting the local scale of magic users, and instead using medieval combat techniques with nascent gunpowder weapons. Makes for interesting strategy.
