A really good solid book with a twist or two. Very easy reading and nothing to complain about per-say but for me it wasn’t a higher rating

Well holy shizzle, peeps! I wasn’t prepared for this addictive debut and I’ll tell you why below.

If you’re looking for a gripping tale of manipulation, power, control, revenge, and buried secrets amidst the opulent backdrop of Chelsea, London then “The Mother In-Law’s Secret” by Melanie Price is a must-read that delivers on every front.

From the very first pages, the author immerses you in a world where lies, mistrust, family, relationships, and betrayal entwine to create a web of intrigue that refuses to let you go. The setting is as lavish as the secrets hidden beneath the surface, and you’ll find yourself lost in the grandeur of Chelsea’s streets, and the characters who inhabit them.

What sets this debut novel apart is its clever narrative structure, employing two first-person points of view: Izzy’s and Cassandra’s and if I’m honest, I’m not sure either are very likeable, but I love characters who get under your skin and both these women will leave a bad taste in your mouth at some point. Huzzah! It’s a bold choice that pays off brilliantly, allowing readers to really get into the minds of the characters. The distinct voices of the narrators provide a refreshing perspective, offering insights into their motivations to keep you guessing until the very end.

The prologue sets a tone that’s impossible to resist. It’s like the first, tantalizing taste of a gourmet meal, leaving you hungry for more. Melanie Price skillfully paces the story, creating a slow build-up of suspense that keeps you on edge, adding to the tension with each page turned. It’s just bloody brilliant.

But what truly makes “The Mother In-Law’s Secret” a standout in this genre is the fact that it is a true popcorn thriller at its finest. Once the revelations start coming, you’ll need to brace yourself because they are nothing short of epic. The twists and turns that the author weaves into the narrative are mind-boggling and utterly satisfying. Just when you think you’ve unravelled the truth, another layer of deception is unveiled. 💥BOOM💥

Would I recommend this book? In a mind-blowing second, I would! With its unique storyline, suspenseful pacing, and jaw-dropping revelations, “The Mother In-Law’s Secret” is a must-read for any thriller enthusiast. Highly recommended, this book is a gem that will keep you up late into the night, turning page after page, and craving more. Melanie Price is on my radar now and should definitely be on yours too!

‘The Mother-in-Law’s Secret’ is an engaging psychological thriller which keeps you guessing till the very end! This was the first book that I have read from this author but it won't be the last one as I found it to be very entertaining and I loved the style of writing.

This was a book of two halves pacing-wise. The first half slowly builds up the tension as we are introduced to the characters but when the action kicks in, boy does it kick in! Told from two differing POVs - Izzy and then Cassandra her prospective mother-in-law, allows us to see the problems/events from the opposite sides of the battlefield so to speak. There were so many layers of deception, secrets and lies that I flew through this book in a few sittings. Once the action kicks in you can't put this book down and I devoured it!

I really liked Izzy as a character as it felt like she was entering the lion's den! It must be terrifying to try and be accepted in a world that is so removed from your own whilst trying to keep up this facade of not knowing Cassandra. However, this book explores the theme of ‘appearance aren't what they seem’ and does it very well. By the end you feel for both women.

This was an entertaining and well-told story with balanced and nuanced characters! Well well-written, decent plot and a fantastic conclusion. Let me know if you pick this one up!

Eeeeeps, what are the secrets and lies? Whose wide eyes were saved? What a fantastic prologue. Hooked. So many questions as the book is split into two parts. Immediately we know Izzy is the Australian daughter in law who knows the secret, and is keen to find out proof. Cassandra the mother in law is cold and the author is fab at making her appear this way. The anticipation hangs on when and if she will recognise Izzy, will anyone recognise her?. There’s so many questions I need answers to, what’s in the study? And does Miles know anything?

Honestly you know a great book when you’re not even a third the way through and the author throws in another big twist. Secrets, secrets, secrets and they start to unravel by the most unexpected character. I was absolutely blown away by this and I couldn’t never have predicted how the author was going to wrap things up. Every character was written to perfection, the eerie ways of William making you further question who was actually the bad parent in law. This is an extremely fast paced brilliant read. The twists and turns and phenomenal. Loved this book so much.

I wasn’t sure about the narration of this book - some was better than others. It was a pretty good book but not one of the best I’ve ever listened to. Still a good listen though,

Honestly, just... no for me.
I have quite a lot of criticism for this book, but it's hard to share what I disliked without spoilers. I don't take any great pleasure in marking down someone's work either, but this was just not for me.

I can say that the writing was quite repetitive. Certain phrases made me cringe. The story is told from two perspectives and I couldn't connect with one of them at all. I felt like some things were far too convenient and/or unrealistic. I found inconsistencies, which annoyed me, and a bit of a plot hole at the end. I also managed to correctly predict each "big reveal". The prologue didn't help with this.

I did find part of the end a bit triggering, but again, ...spoilers... and that's all very specific to me and not readers in general. Its got a lot of praise from some reviewers, so it must be doing something right. One good thing is the chapters are short, so if you have a busy lifestyle its easy to squeeze a chapter in. It just wasn't for me I guess, but I did finish it. I am glad that I got it for free on a kindle unlimited trial though.

This was a slow burn psychological thriller that was packed with lies and secrets that had me guessing right to the end.

I found the first half of the book to be quite a slow read. Setting up the characters and the plot nicely to show all the secrets and lies from the past threading together.
As Isabel puts together her plan for revenge, we can see the tension and pace build up, ready for the final half where we race to the finale where all the answers are revealed.

There were a good mix of characters and personalities. I'm still holding out judgement on Isabel as I totally get why, but still not sure it's the way I'd go about things.
The Mother-In-Law.....well they always have a bad reputation and I think this character presentation was great. Apart from the secrets, she played her part perfectly, being a character that I really didn't gel with!

Definitely one to build as you read but well worth it as the threads come together to an exciting conclusion.

Entertaining and twisty. I would have given it 4 stars but there was way too much attempted foreshadowing in the beginning. It seemed like every chapter ended with a, “but if they only knew the secret…” The second half of the book was MUCH better than the first and it wrapped up well. Maybe a 3.5.

I thought the book was very repetitious and I found no character that was well developed. In fact, the characters and their personalities changed repeatedly which left no room for development.

The first 80% of the book were dreadful and just continued to imply that there were secrets and “bad things” happening, the ending finally uncovered the plot and the twist actually telling the plot.

Well took forever to get this review down as I finished this about a week ago but yeah been on a computer hiatus this summer after an intense four day session..anyways so started reading a new book as part of a book club started with my favorite girls-apparently this one showed up on Facebook with lots of spoilers and the book is very intriguing with its promise of secrets ….
Part One (Isabel)

Okay so this one starts with Isabel who is an assistant and deeply in love with her boss Mike when he asks her to marry him and move to London with his prestigious family and formidable mother in law..Ah here is where it tricks you into reading as Isabel knows the mother in law but in some way and some of the secret she is hiding
“Sure he can know I’m nervous to meet his parents. That’s only normal. But he cannot know the real reason why I’m terrified. Not until he sees it with his own eyes. The true monsters his parents really are. He would never believe it otherwise- no one would. “ (Pg. 8)

The tension rises as Mike announces their engagement to his family in addition to Isabel’s pregnancy and the need to expose the toxicity of his family increases though Isabel is unsure how exactly to get enough evidence for her and her cousin to prove what she knows…

Part Two (Cassandra)

Told from the narrative of the stepmother-ah yes I wanted to definitely know more about her as she appears so confident and self assured however underneath it all she is vulnerable and unsure of herself especially around her husband…As Cassandra tries to find out more about Isabel and protect her son she deals with her insecurity and fear of her husband putting her away in a mental institution…again.
“And I would do anything to never go back to that place. Because if William could be controlling, that doctor was something else. The only way I got out of there the last time was by doing everything he said. My life with William was the only option.” (Pg. 184)

So with all the parts in place for a big secret reveal and confrontation I was ready—and then let down..boo the secret was kind of thrown in there and half done in my opinion..Throwing in a cousin and secret past working histories tried to tie it all in but I felt it was sloppily done with a lot of intriguing chapter endings to make you want to read but with a ending that felt overhyped and not worth it. So yea I enjoyed the intrigue but wanted more from the reveal..trying to get back to reading so let’s see if I can find something amazing :)

Here’s my review for The Mother-In-Law’s Secret by Melanie Price

I got into this book straight away and enjoyed it immensely. It was a psychological thriller which is a genre I love so I wasn’t disappointed. The characters are great, Cassandra is like an ice queen while her husband is the total opposite and gets on really well with Miles’ girlfriend, Isabel . There are secrets galore throughout the book so it’s well worth reading just for them as they are pretty good. Cassandra has one or two whereas Isabel has her own secrets too. Miles starts receiving anonymous text messages whilst Isabel receives threatening anonymous Facebook messages. I found it well written with lots of descriptive text explaining what is happening or going on.

Blurb :

‘I’ve been dying to meet you,’ Cassandra says in a voice that’s anything but sweet. Her razor-sharp nails dig into my shoulder and her pearly white smile doesn’t quite reach her eyes. My heart hammers in my chest. Does she remember me?

When I first met Miles, it felt like fate. He was everything I’d dreamed of, and we were engaged within six months. But now I’m meeting his parents. And there’s one small problem: his mother. Because I’ve met Cassandra before – and if she realises who I am, my life could be on the line.

An unputdownable psychological thriller that will have you glued to the pages and screaming at your Kindle at the jaw-dropping twist. If you love The Perfect Marriage, Gone Girl and anything by Lisa Jewell or Nicola Sanders, you’ll be hooked on The Mother-in-Law’s Secret!

This psychological thriller is told in a dual POV between Isabel, and her future mother in law Cassandra. This novel unwrapped like layers of an onion for me — once you found something out there was already another just as shocking thing waiting around the corner. A slow tease over time amongst a fast paced plot line.

While Isabel and Miles are visiting and she is meeting his family for the very first time, she is concerned about them recognizing her in her scheme for revenge. Meanwhile, on the other hand, Miles’ mother Cassandra is absolutely determined that Isabel is hiding something.

The beginning is slow in the very beginning as you establish characters and as Isabel sets everything up for success. However as soon as everything is let loose? Everything simply takes off. Nothing is as it seems, and it seems like not one person is innocent.

The ending left me shook and it was unexpected — to learn of what set everything in motion as well? Wow. Price is truly a magnificent storyteller who knocked me off my feet. This was an absolutely treasure to read and I would highly recommend this book, let alone any other novel she has written.

Told through the POV of Isabel, the bride-to-be, and Cassandra, her future mother-in-law, this story is a tale of secrets buried under more secrets. Isabel travels home with fiance Miles to meet his family and announce their engagement. Isabel is worried, but more that they'll recognize her and upset her plans for revenge than if she'll be welcomed into the family. While Cassandra is convinced Isabel is hiding something and is determined to protect her son from Isabel.
This book reminded me strongly of the old series, Revenge, where everyone was hiding secrets and ulterior motives. The secrets and reveals are doled out slowly, teasing the reader and honestly kept me flipping through pages trying to find out what everyone was guilty of!
The plot itself moves pretty quickly. In the early chapters there's a bit of establishment as Isabel sizes up the family and starts to put the pieces of her plan into place. But once the plan goes into action the story flies at breakneck speed, hurtling towards the finale. I think I sped through the last quarter of the book in less than an hour because I just needed to know 😅

At first, I'll admit I struggled to get into the story – patience isn't my strong suit, and the anticipation of the secret was almost painful! But, oh boy, was it worth the wait. The second half of the book unleashed a non-stop rollercoaster of mystery and secrets that had me flipping pages faster than ever.

While I wish there was more depth to William, the author's decision to explore him through the eyes of Isobel and Cassandra provided a gripping perspective. It's amazing how much you can unravel about a character through different lenses.

"The Mother In-Law's Secret" is like a challenging race where you're so close to the person in front, yet catching them keeps slipping through your fingers. I thought I had it all figured out, but the author expertly kept me guessing and second-guessing. It was actually a fun experience!

And let's talk about that ending – WHOA! A massive twist blindsided me, and I loved it.

This book is a great read for anyone who loves a good mystery and enjoys being kept on their toes. Highly recommend it for a thrilling holiday read!

Amazing Book!

This book was a really surprise...

The story revolves around who has returned from Australia with her new Fiancé to start a new life in the UK but all is it what it seems...

Initially I found the build up a little slow but then WHAM! all the secrets come tumbling out... one after the other after the other and you're hooked. Completely hooked.

You get the POVs of both Izzy and also Cassandra at various points which is great as you see each of the character through the eyes of the other and you realise that they aren't all as innocent as they seem.

At the end of most of the chapters Melanie leaves a little hook to spur you onto the next chapter, which really works as you keep going.

Ultimately the original event that kick started the entire sorry affair is shocking, completely shocking and I didn't see it coming.

A brilliantly, uniquely written book that keeps you guessing until the end!

Well, let’s just say everyone in this book has a secret! But who will be the first to reveal theirs? And what will the consequences be?

This is a totally new tale of revenge and manipulation. Isabel wants her mother-in-law to like her, so that she can gain entry to her secret room. But Cassandra is not having it – no one is good enough for her son Miles. And William, her husband, is just standing on the sidelines, smirking at all of them. Or…is that all he’s doing?

There were a ton of twists and turns in this book. There was one twist in the end that caught me off guard, because the character development of this one person did not foreshadow the change in their personality, but the story was good enough that I’m still giving this book 4 twisty stars!

Thanks to Love Books Tours for bringing me on the tour for The Mother-in-Law’s Secret!

As we all know by now psychological thrillers are my jam, and this one, which was by a new author to me, was really enjoyable.
It was well written with a compelling story line and well developed characters. The pacing was well done also with a slow burning first part of the book which really helped build up in my head a picture of the characters and I really felt like I knew them. The second half of the book was a lot faster and really grew in pacing as the tension in the plot grew too.
I found myself really engaging with the book and its characters and although I didn't always like them or agree with how they went about the things that they did, I found myself really empathetic towards them both at times.

This is my first book by this author but it definitely won't be my last I really enjoyed it.

Staying with the in-laws can be a tricky prospect for anyone, but when you are secretly harbouring plans for revenge, it's even more complicated.

That's the situation our main character finds herself in - determined to get her own back, while still keeping her husband on side.

What soon becomes clear is that she's not the only one with a secret, and this makes for a very tense, claustrophobic situation for everyone, especially as they try to keep up appearances for work colleagues abd friends.

There are lots of twists and turns, so even if you figure out part of what is going on, there will be another plot development to wrong foot you soon enough!

Thanks to the author, & Love Books Tours for the eARC of this book.

(Almost) Everyone claims they have the mother in law from hell... but it seems that Isabel really does.

This book is really cleverly written. Part 1 makes you think Cassandra is 'the bad guy' with secrets, and that Izzy is just an innocent that was somehow wronged by the Kings.

Then in part 2 we begin to wonder if Izzy is as innocent as we first thought. Cassandra clearly has secrets, but maybe Izzy does too. I found it really interesting to hear both view points. But neither woman is a reliable narrator. They both have secrets and experiences that affect their current behaviour and opinions.

Cassandra has been gaslit and belittled by her husband for years. Is it any wonder she's distrustful and paranoid? But she is hiding a secret or 2...

Izzy was clearly hurt in the past somehow, but what does that have to do with Cassandra?

This story had so many twists that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Firstly, I would say that this one was a bit of a slow burner… but when it picked up, it picked up good! Once I hit a certain point in the story, I could not put it down! The book very much gave me “Revenge” vibes and these were the characters that I pictured in my head as I read this story. I absolutely love that program btw so I absolutely loved that the book was similar to it! I thought I had predicted how it was going to go, but I definitely did not see that twist coming! Great book, I really enjoyed reading it.

This is my first book by Melanie and I am definitely looking forward to reading more from her!

What an amazing book! This was a gripping, thrill a minute read that I couldn’t put down. It’s a tale of revenge and secret upon secret. Isabelle is planning revenge on her soon to be other in law and it’s a really good journey as her plans are formulated and unfolded. Clair, knows there’s something not quite right and is determined to save her son from Isabelle’s clutches. As the story unfolds, there are twists around every corner, keeping the reader turning page after page, breathlessly waiting for what is coming next. And the ending! What an ending! I did not see that coming! This is a completely enthralling read and I can’t even begin to say how much I enjoyed it!

I got hooked on this book from the beginning. It keeps you guessing until the end. This is about a guy named Miles who takes his fiancé Isabel home to meet his family. Isabel loves Miles but she also has ulterior motives for wanting to go meet his mother Cassandra. There are several twists throughout the story, and you don’t know who is actually telling the truth.

This is told through the POV’s of Isabel, the bride-to-be and Cassandra, the future mother-in-law. I enjoyed reading both POV’s.

This is a book of secrets, revenge, manipulation, and control. I highly recommend this book if you love a good psychological thriller with all of these things in it.

Who's Side Are You On?

The synopsis is what caught my attention. This story was well written with a lot of twists. Cassandra had a lot of skeletons in her own closet. She would do almost anything to protect their name and her son Miles. She ran other girls off from her son. But, to her surprise, Izzy is going to give her a run for her money. Miles announced to his parents that they were engaged. This is when all of the lies, deception, and dark secrets resurface. William is Cassandra's husband. He is a narcissist and a womanizer. He has everyone where he wants them to be, or does he? All of them are hiding something.
