A Sword of Gilded Embers

Rate this book
The legend of the Winter Court King would prevail.

The fragile peace between realms shatters as Eero's fight to reclaim his throne pushes the rebellion forward. War looms on the horizon, and his destiny rests on a blade's edge.

Amidst the chaos, Aurelie and Eero uncover the darkest shadows of their realm that threatens the fabric of their bond. What was an unlikely union twists into life or death, and restoring balance becomes a greater threat than just reclaiming his throne.

A malevolent force born by the chaos of war emerges from the depths of the fae realm as Aurelie grapples with the consequences of her magic. With nothing but turmoil forging alliances between the courts and mortal kingdoms, she finds herself battling with a force beyond the stars that seek their return to power. More than the Summer King existed in darkness—and it had found its vessel to incite terror amongst the realms.

With an escalating rebellion, shifting alliances, and the curse tightening its grip, they uncover long-buried secrets that would either be the end of all wars or the end of all life.

But as a veil of shattered evil descends upon the realms, they have no choice but to face their deepest fears and desires.
Passion and peril intertwine—and fate of all hangs in the balance.

5⭐️4🌶

Aurelie and Eero are both dealing with the aftermath of the trauma that was delt by Eero's brother at the end of A Crown of Ash and Silver. Aurelie doesn't know how to go on not knowing all the details of what happened to her in the dungeon, and Eero doesn't know how to help her without doing further damage.

Lyra is able to come in a push Aurelie through confronting those difficult moments, but it comes at a great cost. The war between the fae courts continues to wage on. Eero just wants to secure his throne from his brother, so he can prevent further harm from coming to his people in the Winter Court.

I will say I found the battle sequence confusing to read at times. It is not like any battle sequence I've read thus far. The ending really had me though! I need to read the next one ASAP!

ARC Review

Book Two - A Sword of Gilded Embers was a lot more plot heavy than the steamy romance novel of book one. I wish we had received more fae history in book one because it was a little overwhelming reading all of it in book two. Eero will forever be my favourite perspective to read by far! His dedication to Aurelie is so fierce, and I can't get enough! Really looking forward to book three now that the plot has truly been paved and the revenge is on!

This is the second book in the fae romantasy series, A Throne of Ice. Tropes included fated mates, betrayals, morally dark gray and trauma healing. Please see content warnings for spice and other adult content.

The Lovely: I loved how a lot of the setup in book one came to fruition in this book, I would consider this book to be more focused on the plot and less on the romance of the main characters. The plot tension had me biting my nails most of the story and I gasped more than a few times.

Also Lovely: I also loved the emotions of this book (an entire range of emotions), especially those between the main characters and the side characters. Some of those relationships are just so heartwarming it might make you a little weepy. The main characters’ relationship felt more focused in their emotional connection and helping each other heal, in comparison to book one’s focus on learning about each other and physical intimacy. The MMC is still amazingly swoon-worthy and I live for his simple physical caresses.

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars 3/5 Flames

Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. The setup for book three is perfection. There’s no stressful cliffhanger but it’s clear there’s much to be resolved in the third book. It feels like revenge will be a major theme going forward.

The build up in book one was worth it for all that we get in book 2. This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The author did a great job adding some tension and turmoil while balancing it with love and spice. The plot wound together excellently and left things well explained. Can't wait for book 3.

A Sword of Gilded Embers is the second book in the Fae-Witch Romantasy series *A Throne of Ice *.

The story continues from where we left off in the previous book (You have to read A Crown of Ash and Silver before starting this one ) .

Aurelie, our FMC , is dealing with a Lott of trauma , both physical and emotional and the way she overcomes it over the course of time is awe-inspiring.
I lovedd her character development!! I remember writing in the previous review that I am warming up to her , but now I can officially say , she's a badass , very lovable MC and when she comes to her power.. I mean ohh la laa ✨🔥

Next comes our MMC , Eero ! So I was already in love with him from the last book and he continues to be amazing ❤️‍🔥 He's morally grey, little possessive, lott supportive of Aurelie, and a total cinnamon roll 🥰

I love the side characters a lot (the found family) and I m hoping to get a spinoff/ novella for Saph's story in the future, coz I lovee her character and theres a Lott of unfinished story over there .

The book takes you through an emotional rollercoaster, there's a lot of twists and turns and BETRAYALS!! You will not be able to put the book down !
The world building is incredible albeit a little complicated. The celestial magic was a little complex, but I think I got a pretty good hang of it by the end ( hoping to learn more about it in the next book ) .

The story ends with a minor cliffhanger, which was me waiting EAGERLY for the next book .

All in all , I really enjoyed this journey, fell in love with a lot of new people and had good amount of emotional damages ( won't have it any other way 😏) .

Before you start reading, do go through the content warnings ( it's mentioned at the start of the book ) .

Thank you BC FaJohn for this amazing reader's copy. I cannot waitttt for the next part ❤️‍🔥.

Absolutely enjoyed this novel! It is amazing to watch Aurelies powers develop and strengthen from book one to book two. I look forward to the third book and how the story continues…. I will say even after reading both books I still slightly confused at the magic system and fae history. I wish that was explained more clearly but I still love the storyline and the characters.

I thought the first book was good, Hello book 2 is even better, How?!

Aurelie is such a relatable FMC struggling with believing in herself and what she may be capable of while being pushed and hurt by others which only builds her strength. She discovers living is a gift worth treasuring and all the what ifs or questioning fate won’t make the journey any easier.

She is truly a Diamond and Eero sees her as exactly that but she has had to endure the pressures to be crafted into the most exquisite gem! And this series is an emotional roller coaster you won’t want to get off of.

A MUST READ!!

I ATE THIS BOOK UP.

B knows how I feel about Eero and let me tell you, I was not disappointed in this sequel. I was squealing, laughing, crying, giggling, kicking my feet in the air, questioning how to find my own Eero, trying to figure out how to meet a hot fae king, and so on.

I am reeling from how much I loved this book and I cannot get over how much I missed Eero and Aurelie.

Thank you for an early copy B, this book made my year <3

A Sword of Gilded Embers is Book 2 of B. C. FaJohn's A Throne of Ice series. I was lucky enough to receive ARCs for both installments, and I am happily offering my honest review.

A Sword of Embers continues the story of A Crown of Ash and Silver. I really enjoyed how a lot of the setup from Book 1 came to fruition in Book 2. The sequel did dig deep into some harsher topics and events from Book 1.

Aurelie is dealing with the aftermath of her trauma while trying to handle all the events that are looming over the horizon. Eero is beside her, and I love how he always offers his support in any way necessary. He has indeed come out as the perfect partner, someone who is there to support, boost, or just be a shoulder to cry on. Saph and Casinox are lovely side characters who add so much to the story. They aren't simple background fillers. I genuinely hope they will find happiness as the story progresses; they deserve it.

A Sword of Gilded Embers really got a hold of my heart and made me a true stan of Aurelie and Eero's story. The relationships formed, reformed, and broken in this book were heartbreaking, devastating, and utterly beautiful. I felt like I've truly connected to the characters and the story, and I am now left waiting to see what the future events will bring them. There is so much more at stake now than just regaining Eero's throne, and I feel the need for the main characters to find a solution, conquer the evil, and bring both the fae and mortal worlds together again.

The ending was so eerie and good that I had goosebumps and wanted to know what happened next. But we will have to wait for Book 3, and I cannot be any more excited about it!

✨A Sword of Gilded Embers✨

What a BEAUTIFUL sequel to A Crown of Ash and Silver. I LOVED getting to be back with Eero and Aurelie!

We dive in pretty much right after the ending of ACOAAS. The found family is training Aurelie the best they can but there’s so much missing still. So many questions left unanswered so many uncertainties. Aurelie experiences so much trauma and in this book, we see her trying to work through that. Eero is ever patient and kind. He’s literal perfection. His brother and Aurelie’s adoptive family, however, are set on not allowing Eero’s throne be taken back so easily. Nor to allow them their happiness.

This sequel is full of heart ache, addressing trauma, and healing found family. We get to find out the WHY of everything that Aurelie has learned up until now. We are introduced to new characters and old. And we get to explore the fae world and the circle of sorceresses even more. I loved the vulnerability between both Aurelie and Eero. They held space for each other. They held accountability for themselves. And they extended such grace towards one another. It was utterly beautiful to read.

ASOGE was beautifully done and a perfect middle book. Things you might find are ice daddy, feminine rage, witches/fae, betrayal, plot twists, trauma rep, chosen family, spice 3/5, moderate language, touch her/him and 🪦, bonded mates, slow healing burn, and an open ending.

Thank you so much, @bcfajohnbooks , for this gifted arc. I ADORE Eero and am so excited to read book three!!

Ps. Her character art is 🥵.

☆Amazing sequel☆
This is book 2 of the series, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I knew it was going to be good since book 1 was perfect, but I didn't think it was going to be this good!!!! The plot and the writing were very easy to get into, and the book is action-packed all the way through. The characters are all so great. I have a soft spot for each one 🥹 Unfortunately this story ends on a cliffhanger, so I'll be patiently waiting for the arrival of the next book🙌😍

Wow this book was heavy with trama recovery. But so worth it. Aurelie and Eero are one of my favorite couples. He is a total cinnamon roll but only for her. I’m very excited for the next chapter in their story.

Okay less acotar vibes in this one. So that was nice to see it spin off into its own story.

I love any 🌶️ scene with a throne. And this book had a good one.

Also the cliffhanger on this was something. Who’s Sid?!

B.C. FaJohn does it again!!! Book 2 was an amazing addition to A Throne of Ice series! Aurelia as the FMC continues to grow as does her MATE Eero. The dual POV is always a favorite aspect of mine that authors do and the way that B.C. is able to maintain the difference between the characters POVs is incredible to read. Lots of ups and downs, inner turmoil, and that ending?! I’m ready for the next one!

I managed to get an ARC of this book and it was so worth it!

In the beginning I had to search my bird brain what exactly happened again in book 1. Slowly it seeped back into my memory.

We continue where book 1 ended and now our main character, Aurelie, has to face the gruesome trauma that happened to her by her, I guess soon-to-be brother-in-law. She has to fight through her trauma while also trying to wield her magic. Meanwhile a shadow is bothering her too. This girl can’t catch a break.
There is hardly any time for hanky panky in between the bickering and the war looming, but they manage to do it anyway.
Our heart throb Eero is ever the bodyguard that will walk through fire to protect his mate. Even if now we know he is a king, he still can’t shake the feeling of his old job.
Together our couple has to fight off not only an evil king (aka brother-in-law), but also a witch that is turned crazy due to a wicked being.

I can say I throughly enjoyed this book and hope that book 3 will be as good as the previous 2!

ARC Review

I have to say how surprised I am that I really enjoyed this book. While I love the story I was not a huge fan of book 1 but I wanted to know what happened so here I am. I’m SO glad I pushed ahead.
The writing is not perfect. There are moments I was utterly confused and felt more details could have helped explain what was happening. Or slowed down the more intense parts a bit to give better explanation. By the end I didn’t really understand what was happening between the gods. Or with Azalea? It’s like she disappeared at the end of the book which I thought was strange. I get she was upset about what happened but how was there no further explanation on it? Especially with her being her “mom”….Weird. Or Sapphire and how she came back to life?!
The love story…swooning. Book 1 felt rushed but by book 2 the intensity in the connection between them really took off. *The spicy scenes on point*
Overall it was decent. I really can’t wait now for the next book to find out what happens.

Gosh this book just couldn’t get me hooked. Not much action or romance happening but we do get alot of plot and history. TBH, a lot of it confused me.

I feel like the way things were described sometimes were too wordy and left too much to the imagination, which left you confused in the scenes that followed.

The ending was nice though! Overall not a bad read!

What an amazing read this book is. The adventure, love, betrayal, sadness, happiness, it's all in this book. I had tears of sadness and tears of happiness. This is absolutely a top read for me- my emotions were all over the place. I love reading a book that makes me feel like I'm in the book with the characters experiencing everything they are, and this book did it for me. I can't wait for book 3.

This one is getting 3.5 stars from me, as well.

I love that the book ended on a cliffhanger. Since this is a series, that ending felt much more natural than the HEA ending of book one.

While I did love the characters and story of the first book, the misused words and repetitive word use made for a bumpy read for me. The composition of this second book was much cleaner, but still contained those same issues (to a lesser degree).

I’m still obsessed with Eero, though he fell a little flat for me at times. How many times is he going to say he will never allow something like this to happen to Aurelie again, every single time something like this happens to Aurelie, but things keep happening to Aurelie and he never takes sensible precautions to prevent them or seem able to be aware of them happening and therefore intervene to stop them? That got frustrating for me.

I liked the structure of the story and plot. There was a lot of movement, action, traveling to different locations. There was good character/story development for Yenira, and a bit for Azalea. I would’ve loved for Azalea to take up more space in the book, because she seems fierce and like she could be a force to be reckoned with. We saw bits of that, but she could be so much more! We also need more of Casynox’s story. Things happened to him in this book with no real explanation of HOW it happened. The way he’s been presented to us so far in this series begs for him to have his own history and story arc.

Sometimes it felt like we were checking boxes as we went along instead of really living in moments (physical changes after talk with the gods ✅, spicy throne scene ✅). Other times, I felt like I was truly present with the characters - specifically, Aurelie’s PTSD-esque and trauma responses in the wake of what she went through in book one and what she continues to face in book two. I feel like that experience was really well represented.

Overall, though I have my constructive feedback, I ultimately really enjoyed the book and spending more time with these characters. I’m definitely in for the long haul here.

**Thanks so much to B.C. FaJohn for sending me an ARC of this book. I have read and reviewed of my own accord, and all thoughts/opinions are my own.**

The second half and the cliffhanger is so good! I’m still unsure about the connection to some of the characters, some of the relationships between them, and the magic system is so confusing for me and the first half wasn’t my cup of tea with too much pining over nothing it seemed, but the second half and that cliffhanger changed everything and I’m excited for the next book that has revenge written all over it! 👀🔥⚔️

This surprised me a lot and sent me on a rollercoaster of emotions for several reasons and I loved them it tugged at my feelings. But for my rating, it went from 2-5⭐️ for different parts of the story. Almost got a whiplash that I didn’t want😅 Therefore I landed right in the middle for this one, but are actually more hopeful for the next book because the good parts was really good!

Thank you to B.C FaJohn for the eARC.

👑 Fated mates
⚔️ Fae vs humans
👑 Gods and myths
⚔️ Politics and war
👑 Secret magic
⚔️ Trauma healing

I still like the world very much and it remind me a lot about ACOTAR. Also some of the plot actually, but not too much alike. I love that the villains are truly dark and/or cowards, and that they aren’t too humanised! 🙌🏼🖤 I really like the MCs and their relationship, but the first half had too much pining and it felt underwhelming. I get that it has something with the FMC trauma and the MMC trying to be respectful, but I really struggled to understand his actions and throughs. He is mostly morally grey, but would do everything just for her which I love! She is so complex and brings the different stages of trauma and healing forward in a way I and possible a lot of others can relate to and hers POV was very well written in my opinion🫶🏼

I find it a bit easier to connect with the other characters and their relationships this time, especially Aurelie with both Sapphire and mom, but it’s still an overall problem for me. I wished I could have felt it’s a found family, but I just struggle to connect in that way. This book was a lot more plot heavy and had a bit more world building than I expected for a second book which made it quite heavy to get through the first half. It’s also a bit repetitive at times and I’m so confused by some of the the war/battle scenes and the magic system. Hopefully that will be explained in book 3🤞🏼

**I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review** This review was due a while ago, I'm sorry. I had anticipated a June release... I don't read my emails!

5 stars out of 5.
4 peppers out of 5.

B.C. FaJohn is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I'm already browsing her website for a signed copy. *squeals in excited fan girl*

Genre: Romantasy
Dual POV/First Person
Read in one sitting?: I wish! I'd read this entire series in one sitting if I could.

Tropes:
Fated mates
Bodyguard/Prisoner
Enemies to Lovers
Slow Burn
Morally Grey FMC and MMC

This is the second book in A Throne of Ice series. It takes place almost immediately after the events of A Crown of Ash and Silver. I'm unclear if it was a few days or a few weeks after, but it's very short time period between the two books. It still follows the main characters, Aurelie and Eero.

Like the first book, I devoured this book as time permitted me. The writing style and pacing doesn't falter, allowing the reader to easily get immersed and lose track of time. FJohns' world building holds strong, as she further crafts deeper, darker evils, and develops the characters to even more complex levels on their moral compasses. I'm excited to see how the events of book 2 pan out in book 3. This is one story I'm rooting for a HEA (as much as I love non-traditional endings).

"... it will end with you. Always."

I still rate the best kiss belongs to A Crown of Ash and Silver, however, this book has more intimate moments between the main characters. Eero's understanding and patience for Aurelie after the events of book one were endearing. If I recall correctly, like A Crown of Ash and Silver, the longest chapter in this book is also a spicey chapter. If the pattern continues, book 3 better not let us down!

"My destiny only goes as far as you, Aurelie Cane."

At the point of this recommendation, it's a heavy bias to read the series if you haven't. Fae, slow burn, steam - lots of steam, morally grey characters, danger, immaculate world building. Find a copy and get reading!

As Eero fights to reclaim his throne, it pushes the rebellion forward leaving war looming on the horizon. Aurelie and Eero uncover the darkest shadows of their realm and it threatens the fabric of their bond. A malevolent force emerges from the depths of the fae realm, leaving Aurelie to grapple with the consequences of her magic. As the rebellion escalates and alliances shift, Aurelie and Eero have no choice but to face their deepest fears and desires.

As the second book in this series, these must be read in order. A SWORD OF GILDED EMBERS consists of further expansion on the world building, historical context, and to a certain extent the magic system. I liked this added context and explanation in comparison to book one, but still feel as though there are questions I'd like to have answered for a more complete understanding, particularly with respect to the Courts, and more specifically the Winter Court. I'd also appreciate more discussions of the magic system as I don't really feel like it has been fully fleshed out yet.

I liked that this novel still maintains a dual POV, alternating between Aurelie and Eero's perspectives. I enjoyed the character development of Aurelie and Eero over the course of this story. Aurelie has experienced a lot of trauma (in book one) and is learning to work through it over the course of this novel. I enjoyed that she also spends time learning about herself and her capabilities with her newfound magic. The emotional connection that continues to develop between Aurelie and Eero is well done, and their physical chemistry is becoming more prevalent as well. The throne room scene was excellent.

I really enjoyed all the action that occurs here, making this story fast-paced and intriguing. I loved all the battles and was always anxious as to what the outcome would be! I am excited to see what book 3 will bring!

Many thanks to the author for a digital ARC of this book.

Woooooo what a ride! This book was riddled with angst, shame, anger, guilt, but most importantly understanding and the love that comes with getting a loved one through tough times.

I loved Aurelie and Eero. Plain and simple. Aurelie is still as fiery as ever, and Eero loves her for it. In fact, when she is withdrawn into herself still recovering from recent events he cherishes when the fiery reappears.

Eero is calm and patient, anything that helps support Aurelie. He will burn worlds to help her get better, and will tear down anyone who tries to harm her in any way. Aurelie is so brave even when she doesn't think that she is, and she will stand up for what's right even if it isn't the easy way.

I am a sucker for a secret/hidden destiny when our FMC gets to be the badass to save the world, and it's really looking like this is going to be our Aurelie. She learns a lot about herself in this book, and I'm excited to see what she does with it in the next installment.

This book is so action packed, I was skipping words and paragraphs to find out what was happening....and then I'd go back and read the whole scene.

The dialogue is top notch. And I love how the relationship with Sapphire and Aurelie keeps building. The writing was so fluid, the story was easily digestible and left me craving more.

What you can expect:
• touch her/him and 💀
• new powers
• overcoming trauma
• he would burn worlds for her

Absolute stunner of a sequel!

Overall: definitely recommend!

I hate not finishing books, like HATE it ... I can name for you all of the books I didn't complete, and it is an extremely short list. I was so excited to receive an ARC for this book and I had hopes for it, I really did. The premise of the first book was decent, and while I wasn't really digging on the characters I thought that they would have some growth in the second book since they'd come to terms with their feelings. Sadly, I was disappointed again. I read a good quarter of the book, but when I got to the sentence of "Lyra was cruel in the best way." I just could not continue any longer.

I liked the side character of Sapphire with her unrequited love, and Casynox was also pretty cool. The two main characters though were SO hard to like, they were both petulant and flighty, poor at any type of communication and so volatile with their feelings and emotions - despite the MMC having years to mature. Like I understand FMCs being young and inexperienced with things, but I just didn't like Auralie - like I doubt I would want her as my friend. I feel like I'd be the reasonable one and have to continually have my sage advice shunned because of her emotional upheavals. She goes from confident and powerful to a wet ball of sad, saggy damsel-in-distress-needing-a-strong-man-to-save-her in 5 seconds flat. And then, then she gets mad at the AUDACITY of someone trying to save her as well ... so, unfortunately, I just can't continue with this story.

A Sword of Gilded Embers is the second book in this fae romantasy series, and the stakes have been turned up.

We continue where we left off, following Aurelie and Eero on their journey to take back the Winter Court and stop an all out war from happening. Their journey takes them on so many twists and turns, while each of them also ventures on a path of self discovery that intertwines their fates.

The plot to this story was ramped up, and I loved the character and story development. I did find that for me, the beginning portion moved a little slow, but once we got about a quarter of the way through, the pacing picked up and I loved all of the action, tension and intertwining of characters and motives.

I did love the lore and world building from book 1, and while I wish we had gotten a little more, I did love the world building in this book, learning more about the fae and human history and how their fates and worlds are connected.

Eero’s love and devotion to Aurelie is so beautiful, his supportiveness of her on her journey to rediscover herself and her recovery is so beautiful and powerful. And Aurelie’s growth and journey this book was so emotional and impactful and it really played well with the plot and helped the progression of the story.

I am so excited and can not wait for book three to see what lies in store for our characters and what more we get to learn about their world and magic.

No, no I cannot be let hanging like this

SPOILERS (Maybe)

Oh my gosh! Okay Eero and Aurelia continue to be one of my favorite couples, but in all honestly it is more they are favorite characters as their relationship is not totally solid through the majority of the book. I loved the dual POV, loved the dialogue but wanted so much more. I felt like some of the plot development and background was a bit rushed and some of the emotional angst got drawn out almost a little too much. I totally accept and understand that everyone processes trauma at their own pace, but I was kind of annoyed as I felt Aurelia was portrayed so much stronger in the first book and this book she seemed kind of just like scared of her own shadow. I know that the trauma she went through could have broken her strength but given how she was in the end of book one I don’t feel book two needed to be all about her fear. I really needed more in the scenes with the gods and Myrthana, I felt those were super rushed and there could have been more time spent developing that back story. I cannot wait for the next book and even though it ended in somewhat of a hanger, I was kind of like does anyone really care about Julius though? Overall loved the book, the spice picked up in this one but did not overpower the story line.

*ARC Review*

The second book in the Fae Romantasy Series A Throne of Ice. Having already ARC read the first book I knew the background story going into Book 2, which I think is a definite must to understand the premise for the plot.

Book 2 seemed to be exclusively plot based this time around, giving a lot more background and contaxt to the storylines instead of focus on the romance aspect - which I thought was a great way to add to the plot . It helped with the growth of both the narrative and characters, taking a deeper dive behind certain characters' actions and their consequences from Book 1 onwards.

The Fae History and the connection with the Gods in Book 2 had me on the edge of my seat, especially by the last few chapters of the book. I know that we are likely building up to full out battle in Book 3, and there are certain characters that definitely need to ☠️ a most heinous death.

Overall, it is a much darker and information heavy book compared to Book 1, but it starts to answer a few lingering questions that were sought in Book 1. Thoroughly looking forward to the finalé in Book 3 when it comes out!
