Charley and George are at the Paralympics in Paris. Even though Charley is the teenage pop star, it’s George who gets the most attention. He’s become a bit of a celebrity too, after the movie he and Charley made in the last book.

Then George’s favorite athlete goes missing. It quickly becomes a case for the two rockstar detectives.

What I like about the characters is that, from the start, Charley gets asked if she’s jealous of her best friend now that he’s getting some time in the spotlight instead of her. And she’s not jealous at all, she’s genuinely happy for him and she supports him. This is part of the foundation of a good friendship in my opinion. A good friendship is all about lifting each other up, not lifting yourself up while pulling your friend down.

To say that the representation of the Paralympics in this book is done right would be an understatement. Adam Hills of course knows what he’s talking about. But you still need to be able to write it all down in a way that feels realistic, interesting and entertaining for the reading audience. And he balances this all really well.

Adam Hills has definitely grown as a writer here. This story actually feels like the best one in the series so far in my opinion. Not because of the mystery plot or anything like that. Because it feels like a pretty standard mystery to be honest. And I’d actually say the stakes are surprisingly low this time around. But it’s more fun. The coded messages are fun to try to work out for yourself. They’re challenging, but not too difficult. The red herrings and twists also feel executed a little bit better.

This is a more relaxed but fun addition to the series. The Paralympics setting is done really well. It’s clear the author loves dogs, which is always a bonus for me. And I can’t wait to see how much more Adam Hills can grow as an author.
