Rip Tide

“Fireworks explode down the shore in Rip Tide, Colleen McKeegan’s absorbing novel. At once an insightful look at tangled family dynamics and a wrenching story of youthful delusion, Rip Tide illustrates that for many women, the past is a ticking time bomb. The deeper we bury it, the bigger the boom. Spread out a blanket, crack open Rip Tide and prepare to be dazzled.”—Jillian Medoff, author of When We Were Bright and Beautiful

From the author of The Wild One, a heartfelt and suspenseful novel about two sisters returning to their childhood beachfront home who are forced to confront their traumatic past when a body washes ashore.

It’s been fifteen years since Kimmy Devine promised herself she’d never move back to Rocky Cape, the idyllic South Jersey beach town where she grew up. She doesn’t want to relive the crushing heartbreak and scandal that ravaged her world as a teen. Her younger sister Erin shares those feelings, the wounds she caused so many years ago forever binding her and Kimmy.

Yet here they are, back in their Kimmy, floundering after quitting her high-powered finance job in London to help her dad run the family’s hardware stores; Erin, reeling from fertility issues and an ongoing divorce, begging to be taken seriously by her parents. The more time they spend in Rocky Cape, the stronger the pull of nostalgia, and both Erin and Kimmy slip on the past like a pair of last year’s sandals, forgetting about the blisters when worn too long.

As the sisters celebrate their homecoming at their parents’ yacht club, a handful of familiar faces arrive to dampen the revelry. The next morning, a body is found floating nearby and long-buried secrets from their adolescence begin to emerge. Someone from the sisters’ past, it seems, is out for revenge.

Told in fast-paced, dual timelines, Rip Tide is a steamy, tension-filled tale of suspense about family, friendships broken and repaired, young love lost and rekindled, forgiveness and second chances, taking control of your life, and the dangerous decisions we make when blinded by desire.

What a beautiful cover which drew me in. This was a well written family drama with a bit of a thriller thrown in. It’s about all the great things that can happen to you in high school and all the horrible things too. It’s about trying to relive your glory days 15 years later when perhaps your glory days really weren’t that great looking back. It’s about the love of a sister, a mother, a good friend. It’s about the what ifs and shoulda beens and definitely should not have beens. I really enjoyed this novel.

This book wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I went in thinking it would focus on the mystery of the dead body, but it turned out to be more of a coming-of-age story. Most of the narrative unfolds in flashbacks, recounting the sisters' childhood, friendships, and romances. The story then shifts to the present, where we see them repeating the same mistakes they made as teenagers. Both sisters were frustrating characters, they’re just as immature as adults as they were as teens, consistently making poor decisions.

I also wasn’t a fan of the third-person POV, especially with how it jumped between different characters. Although Goodreads classifies this as a thriller, I’d argue it’s not. The mystery is actually a minor part of the story, with the drama surrounding the sisters taking center stage. I did like the ending, but for the most part I was disappointed and annoyed by this book.

Rip Tide is a coming of age story told in dual timelines. It was full of all those mistakes we make as teenagers that make you want to yell at the characters to STOP being so destructive and stupid. These same characters took so many of their mistakes into adulthood 15 years later. These characters frustrated me beyond words, a true testament of how well the author brought them to life.

Loved this quote:

"Because that's what real love looks like. It grows into something deep, supportive, quiet, stable."

In some places this is referred to as a psychological thriller. Although it kicks off with a shocking event, this is more of a family and friendship drama.

Expectations are important, and if you go into this thinking it's a thriller, you might be disappointed.

Overall, it was a great coming of age, friendship drama with a great conclusion. Seriously, loved that ending !

If Female Rage: the musical was a book, this would be it. I absolutely loved this coming of age story. I was hooked from the first chapter, where a body was discovered. From there, you are on a rollercoaster ride of early 2000s high school nostalgia, spice, and reunions of characters.

The early 2000s part of this book was AMAZING. I literally was thinking about myself during that time, the AIM away messages, the MySpace coding, watching tv series on DVD. Ugh, take me back! I loved this book!

1.75 stars.

There's some important topics and some interesting ideas there, but sadly enough they didn't fully come to fruition, and the whole book was a big disappointment.

The tags on Goodreads mention 'Thriller' and 'Fiction', but I feel that first one should have been replaced by 'Romance', and that would have been a more accurate description of the final product. The thriller part is minimal, and even though the epilogue offers a somewhat interesting twist, the execution and the character development wasn't apt enough to make the whole thing memorable.

Obviously, and since I just read an Uncorrected Proof of this novel (on sale on August 13, 2024, even though I can't really recommend it to anyone... and thank you to Harper and Goodreads for the Giveaway, by the way), this can still improve, as a final product. However, as things are right now, there is a lot that needs to be... well, yes, improved.

The text messages between the mom and the daughters at the end of some chapters are completely out of context, till the point they can be perceived as some kind of mistake at the beginning, and need more context to be really impactful (even if with something so simple as a better edition, and having them displayed in a different page).

The writing style... well, it wasn't great. Who does really write things like 'You feel like sex', and can do so while keeping a straight face? Or quotes like these (that, once again, hopefully won't be in the final version): 'Because she's ready to put a cap on this portion of her heart, to lock the memories in one valve so the others can beat stronger, harder, as they make new, untainted ones.'

So, quite a mess overall, and certainly no the evocative story about friendship and sorority that I was promised...

A dual timeline, “very much character driven” story focused on two sisters angsty coming-of-age in the early 2000’s, and now as adults after a devastating death and the repercussions left in its wake. This touches on sisterhood, friendship, vulnerability, toxic relationships, personal growth, a bit of romance and mystery. Wonderful storytelling. Am looking forward to reading what Colleen McKeegan writes next. 5 stars — Pub. 8/13/24

This is tagged as a thriller, and I can assure you that… it is not. Yes, somebody dies on the first page, which is usually a good sign for me in a book, but the why and who behind the death are barely mentioned again until the end. Despite this being outside my typical genre, I enjoyed reading it. The story is about the complicated love lives of two high school sisters, and alternating timelines show how the past is catching up to them when they’re back in their hometown years later.

I’m a Jersey girl and I love the shore, so the setting was perfect. Kimmy and Stevie’s friendship and its challenges felt real and relatable. The writing was great, and I loved the heavy dose of nostalgia - I graduated around the time the story is set in, so I fully appreciated the cultural references. My own high school experience was a little more tame, but I could still relate to the rollercoaster of emotions at that age. The author even has a Spotify playlist to go with the book, if you really want to set the mood!

At first, I was rooting for Kimmy and Justin, but as we got to know more about their history together, I started to feel mostly frustrated at the way women are so often treated. It was a tough one to read, though, not because of the story but because of the truth within it. I won’t say “we all have” stories like these, but I know I sure can think of a few of my own. I wanted better for Kimmy and Erin and their friends, except for Madison, who was just a caricature of a teen villain.

A few things I wished were different: the text messages at the end of the chapters were confusing at first, and I wish they were labeled with names. I would have liked to see more of Diner James, who seemed like a decent guy, or maybe even gotten to know Kimmy and Erin’s dad a little better, as a foil to all of these awful men who were the focus of the story. The epilogue answered all the lingering questions, but I wanted a little more of the present-day story.

Overall, a good summer beach read; I liked the writing and would recommend to those of you who like a dramatic, character-focused story with a tiny dose of mystery.

Thanks to BookSparks and the author for the advance copy!

This book wasn’t quite what I was expecting at all!! Not usually one for books with lots of drama but this was super entertaining and the mystery subplot kept it interesting for me. I also really enjoyed the jump in timelines, I’m a sucker for those in books. I didn’t expect the little plot twist at the end either!!

Thank you to NetGalley, author Colleen McKeegan, and Harper for providing me with a free ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!

Not sure how to feel about this read. I definitely enjoyed the juicy drama (as there was lots of it throughout) and the tale of the sisters. I thought McKeegan did a fantastic job of writing in both the past and present timelines, and this structure really helped the story to unfold in a fast-paced manner. I flew through this read, and the suspense of finding out what would happen next kept my interest, even when I wasn't necessarily that into the read. I think my biggest issue with Rip Tide was that there was just a bit too much going on, so it felt surface level. This book deals with some pretty important topics, like sexual assault, affairs, eating disorders, etc., but it only touches on the surface. Sometimes, it felt like things were mentioned only to never be revisited. Similarly, whenever there was an issue or two characters fighting, it was pretty much immediately resolved in the next breath, so it felt like a constant roller coaster (and not in a good way). The "mystery" element played an interesting narrative role, as it drives the story, but it resolved much too quickly, and I would have liked to see more time spent around that topic. I was also very confused by the "texts" or "conversations" or whatever they were supposed to be at the end of certain chapters. They seemed really out of place and were never clear; it was kind of explained in the last chapter, but this didn't work for me at all. Overall, I enjoyed bits and pieces of Rip Tide, but there was quite a bit that didn't work for me overall.

Rip Tide by Colleen McKeegan. Thanks to @booksparks #src2024 for the gifted copy ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kimmy is back at her Jersey beach town after seeing she’d ember come back. She’s reconnecting with her family, including her sister Erin. When a body is found, it brings back long buried secrets.

If you enjoy slow burn mysteries, this one is for you. The 2000’s background really synced with me and I enjoyed the past chapters a lot. This was an intense and deep look at sisterhood; the good and the bad. It can be slow at times, but it’s worth it at the end.

“But that’s the thing about gossip; no matter how salacious, it’s careless, a passing flutter to everyone except it’s subject.”

Rip Tide comes out 8/13.

August 13 2024 - mark your calendars because that’s the pub date for this novel and if you’re a millennial you NEED to grab a copy.

This book follows two 30-something sisters finding themselves back in their hometowns and falling back into high school drama and habits. In the first chapter you discover the death of an important character, but who did it, was it an accident, what led up to this? It’s twisty, it’s nostalgic, it’s everything you’d want in a two timeline POV fiction. Oh and that ending… man in queen of figuring out the twist and I did not!

Put it on your TBR and get ready for a quick and unputdownable read!!!

Dive into the Devine sisters’ drama in two significant periods of their life: their teen years of 2005-2007 (chock full of indulgent bits of pop culture) and then again when they “return home” to the Jersey shore to rebuild their respective lives during Beach Week 2022. This novel was a juicy, nostalgic captivating read. It transports the reader back to her teen years, which for most of us, were filled with fun, friendship, and lessons learned the hard way. Erin and Kimmy fall back into old friends and flames. Will they be able to swim out of the “rip tide” this time?

2.5 ⭐️ Picked this up expecting an oceanside thriller, but got more of a coming of age story. The last portion, and especially the epilouge, was really enjoyable because everything played out in a series of interviews. But in the dual timeline, we see all of the characters acting the same as they did in high school and making the same mistakes. The text messages between the mom and daughters also felt out of context and a bit confusing to add. Hooray for Diner James though!

This was a contemporary fic/family drama/genre bender that was unexpectedly heavy with a pleasantly surprising epilogue. I really enjoyed the text exchanges in between timelines, and it all made sense by the end. Also the flashbacks to highschool in 2007 were crazyyy because I'm right in between both characters' ages! So many things I had forgotten!

I read this book in a few delicious bites--the fraught nature of teenage friendships, learning to value oneself and the complicated dance of maturing from girl to woman set in a beach town against the backdrop of a twisty plot combine to make Rip Tide one of my favorite reads of the summer!

I went in with an expectation of a thriller and left overwhelmed by too many characters in a dual-timeline coming of age story. Overall, I wish I would’ve put this one down instead of finishing.

At first glance, I was excited purely by the intricate details of the 2000s! Was it fun to take that drive down memory lane? Absolutely. Did I feel excitement and angst by the similarities of growing up on Long Island (not a far cry from Jersey)? You bet. But this book is so much more. It touches on some serious and, sadly, common themes. At the risk of giving any spoilers, I won’t say more, but do let Rip Tide pull you in until the very end… which I might add, was a very satisfying ending!

ok book. None of the characters are particularly likable and I had a hard time empathizing with them.
But entertaining enough to keep reading and then a big surprise at the end

What a read! This one was full of suspense and such a page turner. I think this one is such a great summer read and you are going to want to pre-order this one to add to your summer reading list so you can read it as soon as it comes out in August!

Sisters Kimmy and Erin both swore they would never return to Rocky Cape. After Kimmy quit her finance job to help her dad run the family’s hardware store, and Erin fertility issues and divorce, they both find themselves back in their hometown. Shortly after they celebrate their homecoming, a body is found floating nearby, and secrets from their past start to emerge.

I think this one is best to go into blind. I really enjoyed it and while I think it’s a perfect summer read, it can definitely be enjoyed any time of the year! This was my first time reading a book by Colleen McKeegan and I will be checking out her other book because I enjoyed this one so much!

They say, "There's no drama like family drama," and boy, was there a lot of that in this book. It definitely made it unputdownable.

After high school, Kimmy Devine left her small town of Rocky Cape, NJ, and never looked back. She graduated college and went on to have a successful career in finance overseas. After her father suffers a heart attack and asks her to come home to help with the family business, she decides it's time to face her demons and go back home. Her sister Erin is already home living with their parents after fertility issues led to her divorce. It's supposed to be a happy family reunion, but secrets of the past sneak up on them, and a dead body is found floating near the yacht club where they just had Kimmy's welcome home celebration Is someone from the sister's past out to get them?

Told in dual timelines of past and present this was an incredibly entertaining read. It held my attention from the very first chapter. I didn't want to put the book down because I had to know what happened between the sisters in the past and how the dead body ended up in the water in the present. There were definitely things both sisters did that made me want to yell at them. I also felt sorry for both of them, especially Kimmy, for what she endured. The ending was shocking, I really didn't see that one coming. I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.
