Michael Crichton meets The Thing. Gabriel Palmer is a drilling expert in the most remote place on earth, eastern Antarctica. But when a meteorite hits nearby, a long-buried threat resurfaces and suddenly Gabriel is the last line of defense between humanity and extinction.T.S. Falk delivers an unputdownable homage to the favorite movies of his youth.
Don't miss out on T.S.Falk's new thrill ride! From the creator of the fast-paced adventures RELIC and THE ANCIENT CODE comes a new fast-paced adventure.
When I was a child, on Saturday nights I would stay up late watching horror movies. This book brought those memories back. Isolated station, unknown creatures, death and horror all around. I read in one go and enjoyed every minute!
Essentially the same story, with a different twist here and there. Well written, very well edited. A good novel. If you enjoyed The Thing and would like the same story with a couple of changes, this book is for you.
Ice by T. S. Falk should be short-listed for Horror book of the Halloween season. The images left in my brain will keep me awake for a week or two. Not to mention the suspense slowly building, turning into paranoia right before...
That's all you get. Buy this book, read it in the dark by candlelight. Enjoy your Halloween. Hee hee.
Not one person can say that the story could not happen. Cold, meters, worms that feed off human hosts. The story is fast paced and not unbelievable. Thanks, I really liked it.
If you enjoy The Thing or its original then this book will be right up your alley. Can you make enough changes to that story which we’ve seen many times (I even remember an episode of the X-Files with this story) to make it interesting? You just got to read it make that call for yourself.
Pros: + characters are fun enough + nice use of ‘what’ is the villain + I do like a corrupt scientist
Cons: - everyone spoke with the same tone, could’ve used some variation - how do I feel about the final fight… I’m not sure I’m all in but it is different than previous versions of the story
Yes I’ve seen this story many times but I still had a good time reading. A good ‘who done it’ adventure in the middle of the story helped push it forward.

It’s a shame Alfred Hitchcock is dead. I can see this as a great Hitchcock thriller, reminiscent of “The Birds”. Maybe with Brad Pitt playing Gabe? Anne Hathaway as Sam? As an alternative ending, instead of hearing the helicopter approaching, Gabe might have felt an itchy sensation under the skin of one arm, and the camera could zoom in on a worm crawling under his skin… The book keeps the reader guessing as to who’s infected right up until the end. Fun.
Unfortunately this felt like it took inspiration from The Thing. "We're out here alone in the Antarctic and a mysterious something has started infesting our crew. It makes them crazy and blood thirsty. And the last guy standing kills the last alien critter and all seems lost for his ultimate survival." On top of a worn out plot line there at least 10 mistakes (missing words, misspelled words or grammatical errors) that further pulled this book into the abyss.
First, Michael Crichton this is NOT. Someone who would say that has never read Michael Crichton. Second, Stephen King should sue for plagiarism. The author calls his "monsters" The Thing a few times! You can't make that up. There is no character development and you don't care about anybody in the story. Finally, the author probably got bored as much as I did and stopped it at 200 pages. Again, Michael Crighton this is not.
The book seems to be a remake of The Thing movies. Couldn't help thinking about how much of it is just like that series. Although it is about Antarctica. It made me think that if I were writing a horror story after reading "Who goes there" it might be just like this. I found the writing in the last few chapters deteriorated. There were many misspelled words and some paragraphs that just didn't make sense.
Storyline is quite interesting being based in Antarctica and a team that was drilling for ice core samples. There is intrigue with a Japanese team close by and interpersonal personnel conflicts. The ending was too dark for my tastes and the best parts of the book were the first 60 % or so where it was a mystery of not knowing what was going on.
Doesn’t anyone proofread anymore? Although the story was fairly good, many misspellings and left out words added to a wooden quality of the story. I can’t, in good conscience, give this a 5 or even 4 star review. I feel like I could have written this, without all the mistakes. One shining light is that there wasn’t as much swearing as authors tend to fill their pages with. I always think that swearing is caused by a lack of vocabulary.
An excellent story, ruined Poor editing, which led to confusion during the story, where you are forced to backtrack to find out what’s happening or who’s involved. The continuity was off a number of different times throughout the story, making it very difficult to follow.
I really enjoyed this book. It's clearly an homage to Who Goes There. There have been alot of Artic creature fearures, but this one takes some twists and tuens to get there. I recommend reading if you are in the market for a cold, mystery with a dose of pandemic level threat.
Although the references from "The Thing" are almost in every chapter and every scene of the book, I have to be honest and say that I've enjoyed this book! The story was great, the characters likeable (especially Gabriel), and the short-length chapters made me read almost constantly! Highly recommended!
This book contains so many errors, literary, scientifically, and medically, I couldn't lose myself in the story. Proofreading might have helped a little, and a little research would have helped a lot. I don't like writing bad reviews, but this book had a lot of potential.
;ikr someone else said a rewrite of "the thing" with a little "Dune" thrown in I had to reread a couple sections several times because the characters, for me got confused but maybe that's just me . Even so pretty much kept my interest for 2 says straight, once I got past the begpnning
Another can’t put down book by T.S.Falk. The horror of the ancient worm, the sadness of losing people you knew. How something so deep in Earth could come back alive, and be so destructive to human life. Great read!
This is nothing but a rip off from the old Kurt Russell movie. I think the movie was called the thing. In addition it’s written poorly several sections, I had to reread in order to figure out who would saying what. Well this is at least my opinion.
What a fun fast read. Gabriel is a good character and the plot reminds me of the thing mixed with blood glacier. A fascinating sci if of monster vs barren landscape and hardy people.
Finished this book almost in one sitting. Characters are interesting; story very imaginative; the good guys are very good; and you enjoy hating the bad guys. Finally, the creatures are terrifying. Bottom line, this is a good book.
For a book from an unfamiliar author, I'm impressed. Interesting plot, fast pacing, believable characters and dialog, it ticks all the boxes for a fun survival \scifi thriller
Barely OK. Several characters not well developed. Parts of story line predictable. Several typo’s. That tends to disappoint. Liked the start, but hurried to finish at the end. Just so I could start something hopefully better.
Nice paced story, you could put it down, but why would you too ? Not a lot of stories set in Antarctica which made for a good change. Can't wait to read other stories by Falk !
The description of this book is certainly correct. Anyone who has ever seen the film The Thing will recognize lots of features of it in this book. Although admittedly, the thing this time is a worm instead of an alien.
Did you think "I want to see The Thing but be surprised by it"? If so, this book works great. It's funny in a lot of places, well done and a quick read. It's nothing special and I'm not a fan of the third act genre shift (a difficult thing to pull off) but it was an enjoyable experience.
I really enjoyed this book. I hope there’s a sequel to it, sorry the guy lost the love of his life but shit happens. At any rate it was a very enjoyable book and it would make a great movie if Hollywood would get off dead ass and make it.
Great book. Lots of twists and turns. I loved the aspect of the research stations and life in the Antarctic. But the discoveries that they do d take you into a sci-fi journey. Great read.
Scientists face a prehistoric predatory Infestation. Plenty of action and tension. There are a few typos that are distracting, but the storyline is pretty good.
