"The Painter of Modern Life" is the single most beautiful essay I have ever read. Baudelaire's account of art is lyrically divine -- so much so that you completely forget you are reading:

"When, as he wakes up, M. G. opens his eyes and sees the beating vibrantly at his window-panes, he says to himself with remorse and regret: ‘What an imperative command! What a fanfare of light! Light everywhere for several hours past! Light I have lost in sleep! and endless numbers of things bathed in light that I could have seen and have failed to!’ And off he goes! And he watches the flow of life move by, majestic and dazzling. He admires the eternal beauty and the
astonishing harmony of life in the capital cities, a harmony so providentially maintained in the tumult of human liberty."

“Kötülük Çiçekleri” ve “Paris Sıkıntısı” adlı şiir kitaplarıyla çağının tozunu attıran Charles Baudelaire, önceden bir eleştirmenmiş, düz yazı ve denemeleri de varmış. Bu kitap “1846 Salonu” adlı sergi değerlendirmesi ile “Modern Hayatın Ressamı” adlı dönemin gazetesi Le Figaro’da 1863’de yayınlanan bir denemesinden oluşuyor.

Kitabın başında Ali Artun’un 77 sayfalık uzun ama çok faydalı, toparlayıcı bir sunuş yazısı var. Baudelaire 19. yüzyıl Paris’i üzerinden çağın ekonomik, toplumsal, siyasal ve sanat alanındaki modernleşmesi hakkındaki düşüncelerini aktarıyor, tabii şiir kitaplarında olduğu gibi açık yürekli, sert, aykırı, ayrıksı, sarsıcı, müstehzi ve kısmen de müstehcen ifadelerle yapıyor bunu. Hem sunuş yazısında hem de yazarın iki metninde yeralan “dandy, bohem, flaneur” gibi kavramlar, “romantizm, modernizm, modernite, sanatın özerkleşmesi” gibi konular hakkında genişçe bilgilenmek söz konusu oluyor.

Baudelaire’den çok fazla etkilenen W. Benjamin ve J. P. Sartre bu kitabı okuduktan sonra daha iyi anlaşılabilir bence. Yazarın gözdeleri arasında E. Delacroix, C. Guys, J.A.D. Ingres öne çıkarılmış, tabii Rembrandt, Rubens, Rafaello da yazarın büyütecinde. Yazarlardan E. A. Poe, Goethe, Dante, Balzac da öyle. Heykeli sıkıcı bulduğunu da belirtmekte yarar var.

Güzellik, moda, makyaj, kadın gibi konularda söyleyecekleri çok Baudelaire’nin. Resim sanatının araçlarına, renk, armoni, desenin yanısıra portre, peyzaj, dini ve tarihi resimlerle ilgili de ilginç fikirleri var. Kitapta Osmanlı’ya ait ilginç notlar da bulunuyor. Modernizmi Baudleaire ile başlatanlar, hatta onu çağdaşımız olarak görenler de vardır. Bu kitabı sanat, modern sanat, modernizm ve Baudleaire’ye ilgi duyanlara öneririm.

Ce petit texte découpé en un peu plus d'une dizaine de chapitres est une sorte de manifeste écrit par Baudelaire, un poète français du XIXème, dans lequel il expose sa conception de l'art, du Beau, et de la création artistique en partant de l'exemple de la peinture. Ce qui m'a vraiment saisi à cette lecture, c'est que j'ai eu l'impression de lire directement et clairement dans l'âme d'un artiste, tant tout ce que Baudelaire exposait s'en accorde si parfaitement avec le caractère et les idées. Tout me paraît non seulement très plausible, mais également très vivant et réel.

Baudelaire dit à mon avis des choses très justes sur ce qu'est la création: l'importance d'avoir des yeux, d'être curieux, capable d'être ému et transporté, capable d'enregistrer et d'assimiler les émotions consciemment ressenties. La manière dont la technique devient par degré inconsciente par l'exercice, afin qu'elle soit parfaitement dévolue à l'inspiration, à l'enthousiasme des grecs, tout ceci est expliqué avec beaucoup d'acuité et de précision. Ce qu'il expose pour la peinture pourrait tout à fait s'appliquer à la musique, ou d'autres disciplines.

Mais aiguiser toujours plus sa sensibilité dans le domaine esthétique et moral n'est pas quelque chose de tout à fait anodin, et a un effet sur le caractère de l'homme: il devient alors impatient face à la laideur, à la lourdeur, à la platitude, à l'indifférence pour la beauté, et cela peut créer une souffrance qui rejaillit par contre-coup assez violemment, jusqu'à la haine. Baudelaire est franchement cruel, féroce, brutal, et méchant, et triste: c'est un effet secondaire du sublime, c'est la rançon d'une vie consacrée à l'art, ainsi que l'avait montré Aristote dans L'homme de génie et la mélancolie.

En effet, c'est comme si toute la vie humaine était absorbée dans cette recherche esthétique, et les moyens de la faire perdurer, de la raffiner, de la rendre toujours plus efficace. Ça demande une discipline draconienne. La femme est ainsi subordonnée à un rôle de muse inspiratrice, le monde à un spectacle dont on s'extrait, autrui à un miroir qui n'a de valeur que s'il réfléchit bien nos émotions, et vibre à l'unisson de nous. Et tout s'entoure de l'angoisse oppressante que cette beauté, cette flamme si rare, si fragile et si ténue disparaisse, ce qui tourne l'âme à la mélancolie, au pessimisme et à l'endurcissement: d'où le goût pour le spirituel et la religion, la haine de la démocratie, du commun, de l'utilité, le sentiment de déclin et de fin qui hante l'esprit de l'artiste créateur.

Il a cherché partout la beauté passagère, fugace, de la vie présente, le caractère de ce que le lecteur nous a permis d'appeler la modernité. Souvent bizarre, violent, excessif, mais toujours poétique, il a su concentrer dans ses dessins la saveur amère ou capiteuse du vin de la Vie.


C'est un texte poignant, juste, et féroce. J'ai été très vivement impressionné.

I enjoyed reading this- Baudelaire's poetic fondness for the life of the dandy finds a new home in art criticism. Baudelaire implores his peers to understand the strange and pure spirit behind great art. He also esteems the life of the dandy in its own right rather than as a consolation prize for non-aristocratic birth. Baudelaire is anything but a modern humanist and his beliefs would be unacceptable today. He relentlessly reviles the liberal politics of the French revolution and prefers to keep a subjugated underclass in place to preserve the sanctity of great art. He believes that people are born into privileged situations so that they can amass their great spiritual potential through prodigious art.

I found Baudillaire’s essay on the Essence of Laughter well worth my time. In this essay, he distinguishes between the significant and absolute comic, which differ in the profundity of their exaggerations. The significant comic observes human folly in everyday routine and reproduces these situations to draw innocent and child-like laughter, something similar to modern slapstick. Baudillare prefers the absolute comic- whose exaggeration of human cruelty goes deeper than slapstick and exposes the darker qualities of the human spirit. The absolute comic masters a motif of the grotesque which compels an audience to erupt into satanic laughter, a cosmic affect of the superiority felt from observing the misfortunes of others. We can consider Baudillaire's absolute comic a puissant hero if he/she uses satanic laughter to expose the injustices in society

Não se pode, em rigor, chamar a este ensaio um livro; será antes uma breve reflexão, tal como o título sugere, acerca dos conceitos de arte, moda e modernidade. Um primeiro contacto com Baudelaire que, não obstante a classificação mediana, se traduziu numa experiência agradavelmente positiva.

Motivo da classificação: o texto é interessante e, em certa medida, partilho algumas das visões propostas pelo autor, nomeadamente no que respeita à figura feminina e ao romantismo com que encara a vida; contudo, parece-me incoerente que o pintor da vida moderna (descrito por Baudelaire) seja aquele que se mistura com a multidão e tenta captar a efemeridade do mais pequeno instante, do feixe de luz, que se antepõe ao academismo e ao artificialismo (da pose, do retrato, etc) e que, com efeito, abandona o estúdio e o atelier, mas que, simultaneamente, favoreça o adorno, o efeito, a maquilhagem, enfim, a moda num todo, em detrimento de uma representação não-camuflada da natureza. Compreendo que para este pintor da vida moderna a cidade seja um palco, um palco de dinâmicas temporais e de um constante confronto com o ritmo da vida e com os fenómenos e as mudanças da natureza, mas é precisamente por essa razão que não compreendo o seu quase desprezo pela realidade.

Uma segunda análise, em contexto de aula, fez-me perder também algum encanto pelas figuras de Baudelaire e da sua personagem-fantoche, se estivermos dispostos a aceitar esta interpretação. Ingénuo da minha parte ou não, quis crer que o Monsieur G. descrito ao longo do ensaio existiu de verdade e que a sua hipotética modéstia face à arte se devia, sobretudo, ao modo como encarava a vida, pois sabemos que tais características não são tão despropositadas quanto isso. Porém, e retomando o início do parágrafo, sou agora levado a pôr em causa a sua autenticidade e a colocar a hipótese de se tratar de um objecto criado pelo autor com o intuito de servir o seu propósito de caracterização de uma realidade por si idealizada, como vários têm feito ao longo dos tempos.

Não reconheço a importância deste texto na história da arte nem tão-pouco na literatura (contrariamente ao que alguns defendem), mas assumo-me como ignorante perante tais assuntos e sustento, em minha defesa, que são possíveis várias interpretações.

A quem se interessa pelo tema, não deixe de ler: serão duas horas com certeza bem empregues.

If you want to know art's role in modernity, read this collection. Baudelaire is indispensable. One of the most instructive comments for me about the sensibility of an artist came from here, about how it is like "childhood recovered at will." That will live with me to the grave.

Très intéressant, bien plus que je ne m'y attendais au premier abord ; je préfère d'ailleurs cette prose de Baudelaire à sa poésie. Il y a trace le portrait du peintre C. G. et de certaines de ses œuvres, pour en tirer une sorte de modèle, celui du "peintre de la vie moderne", et appuyer sa théorie "rationnelle et historique du beau". Il considère qu'il n'existe pas un Beau unique et éternel, mais que le beau est constitué d'un élément éternel et d'un élément historique, changeant et lié aux circonstances. Je suis personnellement assez d'accord et rejette de même la théorie académique qui a longtemps prévalu et prévaut encore pour certains.
Il développe aussi certaines digressions nées de la contemplations de ces œuvres picturales sur le dandy, les femmes et la parure notamment. Si certaines remarques à tendance misogynes sur les femmes ne m'ont pas plu, j'ai par contre particulièrement aimé sa description et sa définition du dandy. Cet extrait-ci résume assez bien sa pensée à ce sujet: "Le dandysme est un soleil couchant ; comme l'astre qui décline, il est superbe, sans chaleur et plein de mélancolie. Mais, hélas! la marée montante de la démocratie, qui envahit tout et qui nivelle tout, noie jour à jour ces derniers représentants de l'orgueil humain et verse des flots d'oubli sur les traces de ces prodigieux mirmidons."

For the perfect flâneur, for the passionate spectator, it is an immense joy to set up house in the heart of the multitude, amid the ebb and flow of movement, in the midst of the fugitive and the infinite. To be away from home and yet to feel oneself everywhere at home; to see the world, to be at the centre of the world, and yet to remain hidden from the world - impartial natures which the tongue can but clumsily define. The spectator is a prince who everywhere rejoices in his incognito. The lover of life makes the whole world his family, just like the lover of the fair sex who builds up his family from all the beautiful women that he has ever found, or that are or are not - to be found; or the lover of pictures who lives in a magical society of dreams painted on canvas. Thus the lover of universal life enters into the crowd as though it were an immense reservoir of electrical energy. il poeta riflette sulla duplice natura del bello: eterno e contingente, invariabile e continuamente in trasformazione, fatto per resistere al passare dei secoli e sottoposto allo svolazzare leggero delle mode.
I due elementi, dice Baudelaire, sono inseparabili. Anzi, quello più importante sarebbe impossibile da raggiungere senza quello più superficiale:

«Le beau est fait d’un élément éternel, invariable, dont la quantité est excessivement difficile a déterminer, et d’un élément relatif, circonstanciel, qui sera, si l’on veut, tour à tour ou tout ensemble, l’époque, la mode, la morale, la passion. Sans ce second élément, qui est comme l’enveloppe amusante, titillante, apéritive, du gâteau, le premier élément serait indigestible, inappréciable, non adapté et non approprié à la nature humaine.»

Interessante retrato sobre a modernidade o que nos traz Baudelaire. O pintor da vida moderna junta muito bem a filosofia estética decadente que ele, assim como outros modernistas importante do talhe de Nietzsche, Dostoievski, Schopenhauer ou Benjamin divulgavam como a única possibilidade artística que daria conta das características inerentes da modernidade.

Baudelaire foi um homem atormentado, mas via na arte um reduto que acolhia ao caos de homens como ele. Por isso não conseguia vislumbrar a arte como fruto da realidade ou da beleza pura. Não, o poeta acreditava que se o mundo é trevas, a arte devia representar as trevas. Não as trevas da natureza, não as trevas visíveis, mas as trevas que se escondem ao olho e só podem ser acessadas por meio da vontade de perscrutar o invisível. Nesse sentido, O pintor da vida moderna me parece uma obra extremamente necessária para entendermos o modernismo e a modernidade em toda sua complexidade a paradoxos.

If you love Baudelaire's poetry, you'll this book. A fascinating compilation of different artistic and philosophic essays, looking at the artist in modern society, the works of Eugéne Delacroix, the works of Richard Wagner, and caricaturists, among others.

With pictures to illustrate and some notes, Baudelaire like his poetry writes with passion and drive, which can be seen in particular in 'Richard Wagner and Tannhäuser In Paris' and the two essays on Poe. He gives insights into things, rather than just supporting the expected view. Engaging, ardent, and wonderfully written. A pleasure!

Baudelaire... Aşk nefret ilişkisi yaşadığım yazarlardan. Aslında aşk denemez buna tam olarak. Hem yüksek lisans tezim gereği hem ilgi alanım gereği flanör, flanözlük, modernite, Paris gibi çeşitli kavramlar çok araştırdığım,okumaktan keyif aldığım temalar. Baudelaire de haliyle bu konularda en çok karsilastigım yazar. Modern Çağın kahramanlarına dair okumaktan keyif aldığım tiplere yönelik yorumlarını beğendim, severek okudum ama eleştirilerini çok sert bulduğum( Baudelaire'in sevdiği ve övdüğü çok az yazar ve ressam var. Çoğunu yerin dibine sokup cikarmakta pek mahir :) ) noktalar da var. Yani ikircikli bir okuma oldu benim için.

Ali Artun'un Baudelaire'de Sanatın Özerklesmesi ve Modernizm adı altındaki sunusu, Modern Kent ve Sanat, Karşı Estetik başlıkları altında Baudelaire'in anlayışını ve estetiğini özetledigi bölümler çok ufuk açıcı.
Yazarın asıl kitabı 87. sayfada başlıyor. Delacroix ve Ingres benim de en sevdiğim ressamlar olduğu için severek okuduğum bölümler oldu ancak kadınlarla ilgili yorumlarını art niyetli ve kötücül buldum. O dönemin keskin ve aşılması güç atarerkil yapısı nedeniyle normal karşılanabilecek olsa da, kadınları sadece bir arzu ve sanat nesnesine dönüştürmesi ve nesne olarak bile kucumseyici yorumlarını büyük öfkeyle okudum. Feminist damarım bu konuda hep acik. İlginçtir, Baudelaire çelişkili biçimde kucumsedigi o fahişeler, courtesanlar ve diğer toplumsal grupların kadinlarına bir yandan da modern hayatın kahramanlarından bir rol biçer. Yine de eril bir zihnin sivri önyargıları son bölümde tartıştığı kadınlar başlıklı metinde iyice ayyuka çıkar.
Kadına ve doğaya aşılması gereken kötücül ve habis bir urmuşcasına yaklaşımından dolayı Baudelaire'i sevdiğimi söylemem mümkün değil. Aynı şekilde en sevdiği dusunurlerden biri olan Rousseu'yu da hiç sevemem zaten. Ne ilginç bir ortak nokta değil mi (:

Sadece Ali Artun'un Baudelaire üzerine olan bölümü için bile okunabilir. Baudelaire'in şiirsel cümleleri edebi bir haz yasatsa da önyargılı yorumları ve cinsiyetçi fikirleri de öfke uyandıran sert bir tona sahip.
Kitabın baskısı çok kaliteli. Ali Berktay çevirisi zaten çok çok başarılı ve kaliteli. Eleştirel bir gözle okunmalı.

Seneler önce okuduğum Walter Benjamin'in Pasajlar kitabını okumaya zorluyor bu kitap beni. Önümde sınavlar ve başka okuma listelerim var halbuki.

David Harvey'in Paris üzerine kitabı, Walter Benjamin'in Pasajlar'ı ve karşı bir okuma olarak (kesinlikle dil bilenlere onerebilecegim) Janet Wolf'un The Invisible Flaneuse; Women and the Literature of Modernity adlı makalesi ile birlikte paralel bir okumayla daha iyi anlaşılabileceğini ve eleştirel bir kavrayış yakalanabilecegini düşünüyorum.

La parte sobre Delacroix es un 10 como una catedral, sin duda la mejor de todas. Aunque honestamente, desde la primera página hasta la última es buenísimo.
De hecho, el final criticando a la sociedad francesa (tanto al artista como al público) y al "arte de masas".... speechless 🤐🫰🏻

Supongo... que... una entiende porqué este librito es absolutamente crucial.
Lo que no me queda muy claro es si Eugène es m4ric0n o simplemente un friki-genio-0pussy.

En fin//me alegra haber acabado esta lectura antes de finalizar el año.

Baudelaire és top. No m'ha semblat el seu llibre més interessant però sempre et transporta totalment a allò que descriu.

Li pra disciplina Estética II, com o Fabrini, sobre modernidade.
Adorei a vibração do Baudelaire, super maluquinho e animado com as coisas, trocar ideia com ele deveria ser muito confuso, mas ao mesmo tempo ótimo.

I suppose contemporary art criticism owes a great deal to Baudelaire. Reading these essays, one marvels at the astuteness and minuteness of the essayist's observations, his ability to see through various artistic "poses," and his rather scary ability to correctly gauge genius, if we are to consider the "time test" the vital measure of that quality. By "time test," I mean simply that Baudelaire wrote about many artists whose works are still considered vital today. He did this when not many people were writing or talking about those artists, or were mostly talking about those artists in strident tones and with absolute horripilation. Baudelaire is always eccentrically true to himself, and sometimes this means he can be outre, sometimes downright creepy. I particularly loved the two essays on caricaturists (French and "foreign," respectively) which are more than surveys of artists working in that mode in Baudelaire's time (with critical looks backwards to antecedents). They're very thoughtful meditations on what caricature actually is (and isn't). I found these essays enlightening, because Baudelaire's thinking on this seems to suggest a direction for critical readings of contemporary passive-aggressive art and newer forms of caricature in multiple arts. It seems to be a prevalent mode today, and B.'s thoughts here seem very germane to me.

بودلر مانند بسیاری از شاعران و نویسندگان فرانسوی پیشرو در قرن نوزدهم بخشی از عمر خود را وقف نقادی کرد. در واقع با بررسی یک نمایشگاه بود که اولین تجربه ادبی‌اش را پدید آورد. و مهم این که او حتی در همان آغاز در سال 1845، در پی هنرمند نقاشی بود که بتواند وجهه قهرمانی زندگی مدرن را به تصویر درآورد. از همین رو او کنستانتین ژای را یافت و در مقاله مهم‌اش «نقاش زندگی مدرن» ستایش‌اش کرد. مقالات دیگر بودلر در این کتاب، مطالعات گسترده و مهم او از دلاکروا و آلن پو -که بودلر از آنها به عنوان قهرمانان هم روزگارش یاد می‌کند- و جستارهای کلی‌تری در باب «اسباب بازی» و «هنر فلسفی» و مجموعه‌ای از نوشته‌های نقادانه او است. مجموعه حاضر، پژوهش جذابی است در مهمترین ایده‌ها و سرآمدان دنیای انتقادی بودلر؛ شاعر بزرگی که ملقب به «پدر نقد هنر مدرن» است. کتاب حاضر نه تنها به بهترین وجهی ما را با بخش مهمی از دنیای هنر، ادبیات و نقادی فرهنگ آشنا می‌سازد، بلکه به دلمشغولی‌های فکری و خلاقانه بودلر و دوران او نیز پرتو می‌افکند.

It wasn't the MOST critical of texts, but really interesting to read. It was great to focus on the different techniques artists have used: i.e. often nostalgic for times/costumes past, whereas Monsieur G. does not - and focuses on the present moment, the current costumes and all that. It was also a wonderful, clear translation.

Comment définir la beauté ou le beau? Selon Baudelaire, le beau repose sur un mélange de deux éléments : le général et la circonstance. Ce n'est pourtant que cette dernière qui permet de saisir entièrement le concept de la "modernité".

Bel essai de Baudelaire, qui pousse son lecteur à réfléchir sur le beau et le concept de la modernité.

I’m not sure if it’s the translation or the endless sentences of Baudelaire, but this book wasn’t that interesting.

The times of Baudelaire were somewhat snobbish when it comes to art criticism but I still enjoyed some of his insights.
I did enjoy though the beautiful part about Delacroix.

با بخشی از عقاید بودلر موافق بودم و با بخشی هم نه ولی در مجموع قلم نقادی قوی داره این بشر
