In a post-flood world, where the United States has transformed into the United Islands, Celine emerges from six years of presumed death. Thrust into a royal family embroiled in secrets, she navigates her new found identity, her place among the royal elite, and unfamiliar relationships with her five prince brothers and her new, alluring stepbrother Luck. Celine must also reckon with enemies who will stop at nothing to bury the past.
Luck, the adopted prince and second in line for the throne, finds himself in a precarious position. As he struggles to prove his loyalty, and secure his place in the royal hierarchy, forbidden feelings spark between him and Celine. With danger and betrayal lurking at every turn, Luck and Celine must tread carefully while unraveling a tangled web of love, family dynamics, and political intrigue.
The Royal Mask was given to me by Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Things that worked for me: Celine's reunion with her brothers was heartwarming. I enjoyed the characters learning each other and the way Celine's memories came back slowly.
Things that didn't work for me: The way this story was described makes it sound like it's a dystopian story, but really the setting didn't have much to do with the plot, in my opinion. Another thing I didn't love was the way there was zero build to Celine and Luck's relationship. He saw her legs and started calling her sweetheart immediately.
There are lots of questions I have after the first book, and many weren't answered, which is why I would read the second book in the series.
Ohhhh my goooodddddd. The absolute audacity this book had to end with THAT?! I can't explain how much I loved this, the heartbreak of a loss so quick into the book that I didn't even have a chance to be heartbroken before giving me the most heartwarming family reunions. I need Celine and Luck to be happy forever, I won't accept anything else. I wish the romance had more time to build, and wasn't one of the "immediate attraction" ones, but with the way it all played out I was not mad at all by it. The constant need they had for each other while also trying to fight it. Ugh, I loved it. I was trying so hard to not cry while Luck was digging. I need more, wish me luck.
In this dystopian future, the oceans have risen and those that survived live on islands that were the tops of mountains. A new culture has emerged with elites and lowborn folks. When a lost princess is rescued from execution, threats follow her back to court. She dances around a strong attraction to her step brother whilst re-learning how to be a princess. This book is a slow moving but well built world. I’m interested to see where this goes in the future books. Lots of court intrigue and a conspiracy yet to be uncovered.
A remarkable tale from riches to rags and back. Celine has no memory age thirteen and up. Her father has raised her in one of the lower islands, into a wonderful young woman. Unfortunately for Celine she finds him murdered in their garage. Which leads to an unimaginable story or mayhem, dispare and ties to her family before she lost her memory. When the Capree brothers are sent to meet with governors on the lower islands, they never expect to find their sister. Whom they all believe is deceased. Trying to save her from a public execution and bring her back into their lives and world. Things go crazy in their life saving attempt. Now back at home in their castle with Celine, things get pretty intense. Learning how to be the person she once was. Trying to remember a family she forgets. All while trying to stay safe from the ones who want her to pay for her father's demise. This story is interesting and has a different approach on adapting to royal life. I did find that some of the plot at the beginning of the book gets forgotten and isn't mentioned again. Knowing this is a series, I hope the points are brought up later on. 3.5 stars
I enjoyed the book and plot. But it left some holes. It definitely can’t stand alone and I’ll have to continue the series to continue all the plot lines.
The idea of it being a new world was nice that it didn’t dominate the book. It wasn’t very SciFi, but gave enough of interest to allow for minor changes in transportation or weather or human behavior.
I didn’t really like that every character in the book was visually perfect and beautiful in every way. It made it so that the characters had less depth. They were all too similar.
Even still I’ll read the next one because the plot was unique and kept me turning the pages.
This was a fun read. I mean, who doesn't want to be a long lost princess doted on by a bunch of brothers? I instantly had to download the second book after finishing this one. I loved the twists and turns and the emphasis on how important family is.
