Qualche anno fa, quando provai a leggere la Trilogia dello Sprawl, trovai non poca difficoltà, perché il cyberpunk è un genere esigente. Lo è per temi (disumanizzazione tecnologica, inquietante potenziamento fisico, coscienza sovraccarica di informazioni) e per stile (scrittura nervosa, lessico tecnico e ibrido, punto di vista interno e frammentato, visioni chimiche).
È un genere nato negli anni '80 come specchio deformante del neoliberismo, ma rimane attuale, perché anche noi sappiamo cosa siano la sorveglianza digitale, gli algoritmi che orientano il consumo, la precarietà sociale, le disuguaglianze globali.
Il libro di Morgan si colloca nello stesso solco, un laboratorio di critica radicale al potere e alla disumanizzazione tecnologica. Racconta la lotta per la libertà di un giovane uomo, conosciuto solo con il soprannome da hacker, "Net", che per ritrovare il senso dell'essere umano deve affrontare i "giganti" che usano la massa per profitto, divertimento od ossessione di controllo. La sua unica guida è "Virgil", misteriosa entità innestata in lui alla nascita, che lo costringerà a risalire alle radici della propria esistenza. Si parla di confine tra psiche e coscienza, di memoria del corpo, di spazi liminali dell'anima, di tecnologia che invade e frammenta: tutti temi che tornano spesso nel lavoro di questo autore.

Libro difficile ma affascinante.
È un genere nato negli anni '80 come specchio deformante del neoliberismo, ma rimane attuale, perché anche noi sappiamo cosa siano la sorveglianza digitale, gli algoritmi che orientano il consumo, la precarietà sociale, le disuguaglianze globali.

This book has a full cyberpunk style and engages the reader with visionary language.
It may be difficult to understand at first, but becomes clear after a re-read.
His vision of the future raises questions about what lies ahead.
