Ups…

An adorable sapphic romance about two teens who steal! Such a sweet and funny story with complex, flawed characters that you can't help but love, along with gorgeous, emotive artwork.

My heart has been stolen by Thieves, the upbeat and adorably queer graphic novel from Lucie Bryon. Which is fitting, as the catalyst for Ella and Madeline’s blossoming romance happens to be an act of drunken larceny that makes for a riotous premise. Ella crashes a party and meets Madeline, the girl she has been crushing on. The two hit it off, but Ella wakes up the next morning to discover she stole random stuff from the party. And then that the party was at Madeline’s house… but Madeline also likes to steal to feel a tiny bit of control in her life. What ensues is a hilarious romcom as the two girls try to make things right by crashing parties to secretly return everything they’ve ever stolen. It is such an adorable book, especially since Ella and Madeline are so cute together:

See? What did I tell you?
Also it comes highly recommended by Alice Oseman, Molly Knox Ostertag, and my personal favorite graphic novelist Tillie Walden, and those three are amazing.

This story was so much fun, and the artwork truly adds to the upbeat vibes of the book. With a very loose but also very expressive character design, Bryon keeps up a fast pace bouncing between school, home, and parties while juggling dialogue and interior monologues across scenes or back and forth through time that really pushes the story forward without ever feeling cluttered or confusing. I like the simple use of only one color per scene, changing to match moods or time of day and Bryon effectively gets a lot of emotion and energy across.

The characters are fantastic and we get a lot of character development for such a short book. Madeline seems like the perfect, got-it-all-together girl on the outside, but inside she is riddled with anxiety (she is still reeling from frequent bullying in the past) and her grades are teetering towards failing to graduate. As the frenetic story of reverse burglary goes on, Ella and Madeline have to confront the difficult-to-love aspects of each other and choose to help the other grow instead of walk away. They are aided by Ella’s best friend, the caustic Leslie, though a big part of the story is a reminder that you can’t just want your best friends around during bad times and need to allow them to be there for the good ones as well. The surprise twist on who Leslie’s boyfriend is was great and the dynamic of the two couples makes for a really heartwarming second half to the book.

I love stories like this that manage to be fun and upbeat while still dealing productively with issues of mental health and self-confidence. This book is a great reminder that people’s interior life likely does not match the outward front they present to the world, and that Bryon really embraces flawed characters and makes them more loveable with their quirks and shortcomings is really wonderful. Also who doesn’t love an adorable sapphic love story!? Keep bringing the queer coming-of-age tales, publishers. Theives is a great time with great art and you should let it steal your heart too.

I love Lucie Bryon's art and I've been anticipating this book for years. Set in France, Ella is a high school senior with a snarky no-nonsense best friend and a crush on a somewhat mysterious fellow senior, Madeline. Ella only gets a chance to really talk to her crush at a party, but then she drinks to much and wakes up some how at home surrounded by a pile of stolen possessions. When Madeline shows up to check on Ella, and comments offhand that some of her stuff was stolen last night from her room, Ella realizes that she has accidentally drunkenly burgled the girl she most wants to kiss. What follows is a hilarious kind of re-verse heist in Ella (and also Madeline) attempt to return items to their former owners. Along the way they also have to figure out their feelings for each other, and how to communicate, and forgive each other's inevitable fuckups. A queer coming of age story after my own heart.

A cute and energetic romance about the titular thieves and their silly plan to undo their thefts. The storytelling relies too much on stupid coincidence and the world's most perfect best friend, but the characters are charming in their flawed ways.

I picked this up because it was one of the few nominees I hadn't read in this year's Goodreads Choice Award graphic novel category.

BEAUCOUP TROP CHOU !

Thieves is a very sweet graphic novel, following two girls who come up with a plan to return items that one of them stole. And in the midst of it all they fall in love. Probably my favourite aspect of it was the art. Not only was it very cute but it got the emotions of everything across very well. The art is possibly the primary reason I enjoyed this one so much, although the story itself was also very engaging and creative. Although the main plot was about the characters falling in love, the side plots of returning the stolen items and also Ella's relationship with her best friend, kept the story moving along. Overall this is one I highly recommend.

I wanted to like this more than I did based on the art style alone which is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, some parts just didn’t click with me. Such as the characters going from barely knowing each other to dating almost instantly.

I feel this would’ve been better if it were longer because then there would have been more time to flesh out a more realistic relationship and to delve more into Madeleine’s backstory as we barely understand her motives.

Overall, a cute sapphic read so I can’t complain too much. Once again I can’t emphasise enough how adorable the artwork is, it’s a truly gorgeous book!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Very sweet and soft, the colour palette is really soft and soothing and so nice to look at. It's just a very cozy read looking at anxiety, bullying and kleptomania, righting wrongs, very heartwarming. I do wish that we knew more about our main character Ella, as we don't really get any background information on her apart from that her parents relocated, but other than that, a super cute, sapphic graphic novel.

Nenápadná, ale o to silnější komiksová romance plná něhy, nejistoty a hravosti. Lucie Bryon vypráví s neskutečnou lehkostí. A ty barvy? Kdyby se z nich dal uvařit čaj, piju snad jen ten.
