I am SOOOOOO DISAPPOINTED in this book.

Like many, the premise of having a character similar to Tom Riddle attracted me. I told myself “OH an original book around a character I love, it’s going to be great”. I couldn’t be more wrong and it hurts seeing a story with potential being wasted away. I will tell you why I didn’t like this book WITHOUT spoilers.

1. The grammatical and typos errors were UNBEARABLE. From the beginning, till the end, it did not get better. I was having trouble reading and understanding the sentences. Some dont even make any sense. It’s really not just once or twice but through the WHOLE BOOK. Out of respect for your readers, who are paying money, an author should have at leassst checked once before publishing. I am not even talking about the amount of time “Peur” was written “Puer” (which was ridiculous in itself because it means stinky in French), the construction of the sentences was horrendous. Reading is unconsciously helping you getting better in a particular language and in this book I was CONSCIOUSLY loosing my English.

2. Now onto the writing. The dialogues were immature. I kept thinking “WHY WHY WHY would you said that this way”. They are supposed to be the “elite” of magical society and they are adults then WHY are they talking like they received no education at all. Even the insults seemed coming from a 9 old mouth. There are so many things to say on this point but moving on.

3. This book is supposed to be inspired by Tom Riddle’s character, NOT COPYING the whole Harry Potter univers. You cannot call that “inspiration”. The number of elements, names, magical creatures, plots lines that are taken from Harry Potter is NOT normal. At first, I was making excuses for the author, but when you are 80% in the book and elements of this kind are still popping up, it’s too much. It is not right to copy that much without credit. I think someone in the comments said that they dressed a list concerning that issue.

4. The author clearly has ideas, but she was just blurting them for the sake of including them, when it was not the time nor the place. It made reading this book even more difficult. The events were messy because they lacked development and useless details were thrown instead. It wasn’t even for planning future turning point or issues…. And this lack of clarity made characters one dimensional. Important “plot twists” didn’t seem well, important and where the author could have dug for character growth, it went under the table.

5. Which leads me to the incoherences present in this book. Things happened out of nowhere and characters said things they are logically not supposed to know. It was, to sum up, very messy.

This book could easily pass as a fanction Tom Riddle/Original character published on AO3.

This book is for the Slytherin's who fall head over heels for a morally grey dark magic wielding man, and love an empowered FMC. Not only is the cover of this book actually stunning, but it is also full of so many of my favorite things. Dark Academia, Rivals to Lovers, Slow Burn, Magical World Building, Political Scheming, & Dark Magic.

The story takes place during the WWII era in a world that resembles Harry Potter where Magicals live on earth, and due to the current war conflicts amongst the humans, Magicals are facing extinction. While a lot of the magical aspects felt very similar to the world of Harry Potter, the Author does a really great job of differentiating the world in other ways. The political scheming was what really immersed me into the story. I often wasn't sure who I could trust or what narrative to believe, and it kept me on my toes.

The slow burn rivals to lovers narrative between Maeve, our badass FMC with an incredibly unique ability, and Mal, our dark and mysterious MMC, had me pretty giddy. There was so much tension between them that I just couldn't get enough.

The ending had my jaw on the floor and immediately craving more! Well done to Lauren Cate Leake on this debut novel. I cant wait to get my hands on book two.

I'm not sure if this is a controversial opinion.. but I'm a bit of a Reeve stan! I was obsessed with his banter and interactions with Maeve, && I am dying to know ALL of his secrets!

Writing this review at 5:30 AM to inform you that this is absolutely worth your time.

From page one I was completely immersed and captivated by this realm. Not only was the romantasy top notch, the plot was considerably epic from start to finish. I need more, I need this story injected into my veins, bury me with this book because I’m obsessed.

New Adult
Dark Magic
Academia Setting & Hunt for Ancient Artifacts
Forced Proximity
Academic Rivals to Lovers
Powerful Main Characters
Slow Burn Leading to Scorching Hot Spice
A Sassy FMC who absolutely holds her own
Plot Twists
Phenomenal World Building
I could go on & on but need I say more????

This one is for the slytherin’s, let’s be real. If you want a darker harry potter vibe crossed with acotar, I present to you The Dread Descendant. Everything I wanted, this vastly exceeded my expectations. I’ll be patiently awaiting for more of Maeve & Mal’s journey. Already looking forward to rereading this hidden gem.

4.95 stars out of 5, and 🌶️🌶️.5,
only knocking a 0.05% because there were some grammatical errors, which I know Lauren is aware of and addressing! I’ll be recommending this book any chance I get from this point forward 😍

Omg when I tell you I am obsessed with this world and characters I mean it!! It gave me all the awesome hogwarts vibes but in its own way. The magic system is amazing, I mean the duel scenes were so fun to read. Mal and Maeve’s power were so cool!!!

It’s set during World War II time period, so I loved all the bits of real life history we got within the story.

I can’t wait to see what is in store for these characters and where the rest of the series will go. Whenever the next book comes out I’m getting ASAP!!! I love Mal and Maeve together so much. The other characters: Reeve, Brax, and Ambrose ahhh loved them too. Everything about this book just had me locked in.

Please Lauren keep my babies safe lol! How is this book not picked up by a huge publishing company, Lauren is brilliant!!

i'm still not sure how to describe the feeling this book gave me, even now, over two weeks after finishing it. i picked it up because of the harry potter marketing, and at first, the insane amount of similarities was what kept me hooked but when i tell you there are sooooo many, it's actually wild. but i ended up staying and finishing the book because of the characters and the unique world the author managed to create. i was completely engaged, waiting to see what would happened next because it felt like one big build-up to something really big, and so i was invested. the author also included so many tropes and interactions that i love between the main characters. when i tell you it's a slow burn without actually being a slow burn. i can't really explain it well, but the banter and tension between maeve (fmc) and mal (mmc) were something else.

also, i have to quickly mention the whole tom riddle marketing around this book. i see why, don't get me wrong, but going into it, i expected mal to have some tom riddle type personality. instead, the similarities were more about the things around him such as the world (being top student, teachers pet, and in a house similar to syltherin) and his creations (the diary ginny found in the chamber of secrets and the horcruxes).

as an overall, i really enjoyed this book. i didn't think i would like it as much as i did. i also went in thinking it was a standalone but now that i'm already in the middle of book 2, i'm so happy that it's a series instead. all my hopes and dreams are coming true.

pre-read: this book was marketed to me as a slytherin romance, so best believe i'm reading it because if not, the harry potter shrine in my room would be looking at me in disappointment for missing such an opportunity. i hope it's amazing! ≧◡≦

absolutely not. This just reinforced my opinion that fanfiction turned trad published "original" story is not going to work in 99% of cases because someone else has already done the heavy lifting for you and the entire thing is dependent on people already knowing the 'base' characters and being attached to them. Was going to give two stars because parts were salvageable and not as bad as other stuff I've read but actually the stuff that's salvageable is straight up taken from others so actually just one star.

Like who is Mal as a character without people knowing he's based on young Voldemort and lusting over Tom Riddle? Just another brooding, non stand-out MMC.

As far as the fanfic turned published book pipeline goes, this one isn't even pretending to NOT be a fanfic.
- a sorting cauldron
- Volaticus = Ravenclaw, Serpentine = Slytherin, Draconem = Gryffindor and no Hufflepuff probably because it's not cool enough
- seven objects to grant immortality (horcruxes)
- Volaticus have to answer riddles in order to get into their common room
- "five merits from Serpentine" ? are you fucking with me
- "purebloods"
- an entire race of slaves not even the word is changed

Then there's also a bunch taken from SJM which leads to some of the most nonsensical and inauthentic worldbuilding that just doesn't fit I've ever seen
- realms (they're from the dread lands... which... cringe)
- elves and high lords and high ladies
- random ass immortals appearing

Personal icks:
- just the mention of realms and the sjm cursed ass high lords and ladies
- "Sacred Seventeen" was side-eyeing the abbreviation considering this takes place during WW2 but that actually fits I guess
- the Seventeen straight up practicing incest to preserve strong and good bloodlines
- "Regardless of his young age, Ambrose won the Magical Militia with a landslide vote." ????? the magical milita is an army how do you win this and why are we voting on military commanders in the first place
- the existence of "gods" without ever disclosing anything more about that to the reader
- the slave character who was treated so well by our FMC Maeve that she's devoted to her completely and ready to risk her life for also her name is Zimsy

The one singular thing I found funny:
- the author kills H*tler and it's just never mentioned again what that means for the war

Things I didn't find so funny:
- using WW2 as a backdrop but basically just using it for vibes and not really taking care of the sensitivity of this setting appropriately or even the interesting parts if you consider this from a historical-political perspective
- we constantly hear about "the bombs" and the bombs in question are literally the atomic bombs dropped on Japan which one of the wizard villains apparently made the Americans do and I'm not even going to say what I think about that

The overall worldbuilding was actually horrendous because it reads like the author just couldn't decide who to plagiarise because in my opinion the witches and wizards don't fit with realms and immortals and high lords and ladies. Because those things are straight up taken from JJK and SJM without really adding an ounce of a personal twist what I know about the two worlds just clashes SO SO badly.

Characters were okay. Mal annoying lowkey. Maeve also annoying lowkey. When she started the whole "I worship you", "My immortal prince" gimmick I was personally out. Love me a toxic, codependent and worshipp-y relationship but it wasn't written well enough for that. Also at some point the author introduces a cringe petname for the FMC given by the MMC like all the worst romantasy offenders out there and we end up with "little viper" and potentially even worse "dread viper" which was it for me.

ALSO Maeve and Mal are NOT enemies to lovers. You people seriously have to learn what this trope means because this was not it. They were rivals at best and even that feels generous because they became "okay" with each other so fast.

Overall, the audacity to publish and call it original astounds me and that sums up the book for me.

Embark on a riveting journey within the pages of "The Dread Descendant," a tale that melds the mystical with a touch of grit, offering a unique flavor reminiscent of Hogwarts but with an edgier twist. Lauren Cate masterfully constructs a narrative that doesn't merely unfold; it unravels, revealing layers of complexity and intrigue.

The story centers around Maeve Sinclair, a witch possessing the rare ability to traverse minds. Set against the backdrop of Earth, where magic is on the brink of extinction due to human warfare, the plot intricately weaves a desperate wait for the prophesied Dread Descendant who could reshape their magical world.

Enter Malachite Peur, an unexpected ally whose friendship with Maeve blossoms within the hallowed halls of the most prestigious magical academy. Their connection adds a dynamic layer to the narrative, introducing elements of suspense and unpredictability.

While the echoes of Hogwarts can be felt, "The Dread Descendant" establishes itself as a standalone work with a fresh and inventive magical system. The narrative doesn't shy away from delving into the complexities of relationships, introducing a slow-burning connection between Maeve and Malachite that keeps readers eagerly turning pages.

The concluding moments of the book deliver a punch that resonates long after the last page is turned, leaving readers craving the next installment. Lauren Cate's storytelling prowess effortlessly transports readers into a world where each twist and turn holds the promise of something extraordinary.

“The Dread Descendant" is a captivating blend of magic, passion, and otherworldly adventure. It's a must-read for those yearning for a thrilling escape into a realm where the line between reality and enchantment blurs.

A resounding 6/5, cementing its status as an exceptional and unforgettable literary journey. 📚✨

OMG!!! Where do I even start with how good this book is?! I was hooked from the first page. Maeve is such a bad ass, Mal is a bad ass.. and together?! Their bond = UNBREAKABLE. The sloooow burn between Maeve and Mal just goes to show how deep their bond actually runs in their relationship. There is so much that happens in this book from historical references, to magic parties, to unicorn sightings, and fighting the darkness within that you’ll be on the edge of your seat the whole time! I personally loved the unicorn sighting and will be wanting one until further notice, but that’s beside the point. 😂

The banter is hilarious, Maeve always has a comeback. And I loved her interactions with Reeve, the High Lord of Aterna.. and especially when he calls her little kitten.. 😂

And the ending?! 😭 I need book two now!! If you love all things magical realms, magic, dark magic, you’ll love this one!? Easy 5/5 for me! ⭐️

“Beautifully done, Little Viper.” 🐍

DNF on page 4. Punctuation, grammatical, and sentence structure errors in every line. Listen - if you came here for alleged Dramione vibes, get yourself some quality fanfic from the source. My AO3 authors are of a different caliber. Forget an editor, this was published without even a beta reader.

Oh my gosh???!!!

This was amazing through and through.

I loved the Hogwarts vibes from it (especially since I’ve never read Harry Potter 😬. I watched the movies don’t come after me!)

The unique magical system was so enjoyable. While I do think some aspects were inspired by Harry Potter I also believe that this book is one in itself.

If you are looking for a book with Harry Potter vibes, Magic, Love, this is definitely one you should try out! (Plus the main character is a girl, if that’s appealing to you haha. It’s definitely appealing to me!!)

I think this book will be stuck in my head for a long time to come.

And that ending??? How could you do that to me?? (I applaud the author though! Absolutely can’t wait for the next in the series and will for sure be here to read it when it comes out :))

Favorite Line: Beautifully done, Little Viper.

The dread descendent offers a captivating dive into a world where dark magic and prophecy intertwine to create a thrilling fantasy adventure. The main characters journey is both intriguing and immersive her determination to secure freedom for her magical people despite the personal costs makes her a compelling FMC. The magical worldbuilding in this book is impressive. The author paints a vivid picture of Maeve’s hidden realm and the magical Academy, where she meets Malachite. This novel has many strengths, including its imaginative plot, and Rich worldbuilding did have a few minor drawbacks for me. At times the pace slows down to really delve into the intricacies of magic and prophecy. Additionally, the political and magical elements while very intriguing can sometimes be a little overwhelming in their complexity. Overall, it was thrilling and well crafted that delivers a satisfying gland of magic, prophecy, and adventure. The main characters journey is engaging and richly imagined as depth to the story.

DNF at 25%.

This is so difficult to write 😭 I wanted soooo so badly to love this book. I was very sold on the marketing of a cross between Harry Potter and ACOTAR.

Of course, I overlooked the spelling and grammatical errors as well as the structure errors in the kindle where it only shows the book as one whole chapter.

The redeeming quality of this book is that it is a little bit more mature of a Harry Potter story. Much more romantic tension which I enjoyed; a powerful, over-protective boyfriend; we’re all here for that. I also enjoyed the setting of 1944, WWII. I also enjoyed, at least from where I left off, the relationship between Maeve and her dad. That was refreshing to see a nice father/daughter relationship.

Unfortunately, everything else about the book was entirely Harry Potter with names changed. I was keeping a list on my phone of concepts that were parallel to HP but it got to be too much. This is why I had to DNF. HP is one of my most favorite series of my entire life, but I was hoping for a more original storyline. I was going to keep going for Maeve and Mal’s relationship but I don’t like the feeling of forcing myself to read something.

I think if this were pushed as more of a Harry Potter fanfic then it would be more enjoyable. But hoping to get an original story but it be a repackaged Harry Potter was a little disappointing. I’m so sorry.

This is for fans of Harry Potter and Divine Rivals. This brought me back to the joys of reading the Harry Potter series, while being immersed in a new magical world set in WW2 England.

While this book shares similarities with other works and calls on real historical events, it still is its own story, and it's an action-packed one. There was some spice, but I appreciate that it was only a few scenes because I wanted the characters to get back to doing what they need to save their world!

This book included maps, a playlist, Pinterest boards, and a pronunciation guide. A wonderful debut and many kudos to Lauren for self-publishing. Very much looking forward to the next book.

4.5 ⭐️!

✨ Rivals to Lovers
✨ Morally Grey MC
✨ Dark Academia

*~*~*~*~*

"𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗜 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲."

I came across the authors account randomly one day while on Instagram, and I have never been more thankful for the algorithm because it brought me to this masterpiece. I’m someone who is still new to dark romance, fantasy and dark academia, I didn’t know how I would feel about this book but I wanted to give it a go because it intrigued me. To say I’m glad I did would be an understatement.

First things first, the map! Who doesn’t love a good mad? Then you turn the page to see the different realms. All significant, all beautiful, and all full of stories. I like how this added some uniqueness to the book rather than it having a single map like a lot do. I feel as though the author had a clear vision in her head which only built the world building up to a higher standard.

Then there’s a playlist! Not everyone is a enjoyer of playlists within a story but I like knowing that after reading this story, I can go back and listen to all of the songs on that playlist and think about how each one relates to the story, it’ll help me sort through my feelings as I continue to suffer through a book hangover. And finally, a pronunciation guide! This is the FIRST book I’ve come across to have one and it was fantastic to see as sometimes you have no idea as to how a word is meant to be pronounced and you’re constantly left saying it in different ways until you feel a certain way is right. The author thought things through so well, I was instantly impressed.

As soon as I started reading the book, I was a little confused, I didn’t know what to think or how to feel but as I was introduced to Ambrose, I was wanting that man instantly and I will admit, he is indeed a DILF. Then I got to meet Maeve and I thought her character was a strong one. Maeve is someone who has a bite to her and isn’t afraid to say what she thinks, and sometimes she’ll go about saying it in a really smart way. I love that she didn’t fall to Malachite’s charm like everyone else did at first, I like that she was somewhat obnoxious towards him, it made the falling for him that bit sweeter.

Malachite is a dream, he may of not charmed Maeve at first, but he certainly made me curious. His questions left me struggling to trust him, but as I grew to learn more about him, I admired him. This man hasn’t had it easy and yet the way he holds himself is beautiful. The way he treats Maeve with such respect and passion has me swooning, and the way he commands power is mesmerising.

While there was somewhat of a slow burn, the chemistry between Maeve and Mal was clear, you could tell they were made for one another and to get in their way would be a silly idea. They fought as one and trusted one another in a way that shows true loyalty and respect. At times I was a bit confused as to why Mal would act standoffish with Maeve while she clearly wore her heart on her sleeve for him, but it was all for her to show how strong she was, and that’s something that I really love and respected.

The reason I knocked off a little regarding my rating is down to the fact that I felt as though mentioning the war was a bit pointless. It was made to be this big thing but then was never properly focused on in my opinion? The author bought nonfiction into fiction and it didn’t feel right, I feel as though the author should’ve just made up a war instead and it would’ve blended in better with Kietel and the magical aspect. I was left feeling underwhelmed, especially when the plot changed up half way through.

The ending was something that shocked me a little. I knew something was going to happen but I couldn’t figure out what, and when it finally did, I wanted to cry… Lauren, you are on my hit list for what you did! I was left creating my own suspect list and I am DESPERATE to read the second book to know who could be so cruel and evil. I will say that the ending did feel as though it was partly done that way so that it helped Maeve become stronger because of something traumatic when in reality, she’s strong enough without the trauma.

All in all, I loved this book so much and the author is a magnificent writer. I hope people find this absolute gem because it deserves to be loved and appreciated. If you’re someone who enjoys Harry Potter, books that involve lots of magic and some romance, then this is perfect for you!

There was so much potential but I couldn’t cope with the errors. It just didn’t flow well and they would switch from modern day speech to speaking like much much older people.
I made it to 35% before I dnfd. It just started to read like bad fan fiction. And I love fan fiction.

Realistically, I give this a 4.5 star but I’m rounding up because it was really a great book.
Maeve is actually potentially one of the least annoying MC ever written. She’s strong, loyal, smart, witty. She’s not tOo SkInNy or ✨such an outcast✨ but a well adjusted, competent main character.
Mal is - for lack of better phrasing - another shadow daddy. Leadership like Xaden, magical abilities like Rhys - he’s “death incarnate” but he’s like, ya know, hot about it.
There were a few too many parallels to the HP Universe (horcruxes, houses, serpents, magical fireplaces) but all in all, the book stood on its own two feet. The magical system wasn’t unique but it was explored in a new way a la Hogwarts 1940s.
I would be remiss if I also didn’t mention the coolness of Mal romantically was a bit much by page 400. Some of it made sense with the time period it was written in - but like, Mal, buddy. She clearly wants a future with you and he’s sitting on the fence between “touch her and you die” and “she can fight her own battles”. Pick a lane. And you know which one the book girlies want you to pick.
so, LC, speed up the writing my girl. I’d like to know what happens next.

I would have had so much more respect for this, if it had been a Tom Riddle fan fic on AO3. But as an indie published book... it needs a lot of work. It's trying desperately to not be a direct Harry Potter knock off, and failing miserably. The pacing is rough, the world building is poor, and this needed another serious round of editing before sending it to print. I don't consider myself a critic, but this was a hard read.

Prepare to fall in love with this page turner. I was swept off my feet by this story. The characters and the magical world Leake creates makes you want to jump right into the pages and be a part of the universe of magicals. What makes this book really special is the slow burn between our badass heroine Maeve and the silky smooth Mal. Leake gives us everything we need and more we wish we had. The satisfying grip this book had on me remained until the very last page where I was dying to know what happened next. Waiting impatiently for book number two.

The yummiest slowest of slow burns. Once it sped up, it SPED UP. I tried to read it slow and digest every word but once Mal and Maeve were looking for the Dread objects I couldn't put it down. You gotta read this book if you are a lover of all things Harry Potter, ACOTAR, and sexy male main characters. Mal is great... but Reeve was my favorite. Reeve is everything I've ever wanted and reminds me so much of Cassian from ACOTAR. I need book two because I NEED MORE REEVE. 😍😍😍

4.75 (2nd read) rounded up on goodreads.

Whew! If you loveeeee a slow burn, enemies to lovers, witches and wizards, and a good overprotective boyfriend then this is it for you! This book was sooo good and I can’t wait for the next book. I give it 4 stars (first read) instead of 5 only due to it needing just a bittttt more explaining of the war for me personally. But wait until yall meet Malachite 🔥 I also can’t wait to see how much stronger Maeve becomes within her powers. DEF read if you’re a fantasy lover!

Saying something went under edits (author’s own words in the premise area of this book’s goodread posting) as a means to cover up blatant plagiarism is certainly…a choice.

I just think the book needed to be better. Like well-written with an actual plot and storyline. I’m confused why anyone would want to read this and will never be picking up another book by this “writer”

fun read

Overall I enjoyed reading this. A lot of borrowed themes/ideas from other books (namely hp) and quite a lot happens in just the one book. I feel it could’ve easily been broken up into more novels and slowed down a bit but it wasn’t a wholly uncomfortable pace. I enjoyed the morally gray to straight up black love interest and progression of the main character. Sometimes the progression felt rushed or unnatural but eventually evened itself out. Cool ideas and not terrible writing (definitely needs a bit of an edit for grammar and typos). Kept me entertained and reading through all of my misgivings.

Conflicted on how to review this. I wanted to love it so badly but it was so hard to get through. I felt like the book was mostly a FMC just doing everything the MMC ever wanted as his sidekick. It felt like she didn’t have a mind of her own ugh. the ending almost redeemed it for me so I’ll probably read the next book. Also how was this published with typos on every other page?? So distracting. Final issue is that so much was a direct copy and paste of Harry Potter like at least switch it up a little.

I loved this story so much! I’m trying to find the right words to do it justice. I spent an entire day reading this book cover to cover, as I was thoroughly and completely hooked. The world-building was phenomenal!

I grew up a big fan of Harry Potter and this book right here made my little black heart so happy! Imagine a darker, more adult version of the magical world, led by Slytherin and set during WWII. So many elements were familiar, yet unique in their execution. If you’ve ever had a soft spot for Tom Riddle and wondered what his life could’ve been like, then this book is for you! The twists and turns will keep you on your toes.

He calls her “Little Viper” and there might be a little 🩸 play… 👀

I could keep going, but I’d end up giving too much away.

The angsty tension that builds around Malachite and Maeve is EVERYTHING! They are two of the strongest people in the magical world, yet they are held captive by their duties to their bloodline and positions in society. Their devotion to each other is so completely evident, but they struggle to comprehend how much they mean to one another and it’s frustrating in the best way. Both have endured difficult upbringings and that causes them to doubt their worthiness for one another. What they do have is passion and it’s absolutely intoxicating.

I cannot wait to see where the next book takes us on their journey, especially after that intense cliffhanger! I’m still unsure who to trust because it would seem that many secrets are being kept. So many wheels are turning across all of the realms and it’s going to get even more exciting as new revelations come to light!

Whoever gave this book more than 1 star, were you paid or was it a joke? I chose this as my first book of 2025 and regret it immensely.
The writing was horrible. The POV was something I have never encountered before to the point you have no idea who is speaking.
The plot…yikes. So full of holes.
The FMC gave me Bella Swan vibes in that she is one of the most powerful but pledges her life and her existence to a man. Pathetic.
The “chemistry” between the FMC & MMC was non-existent and it never seemed like he really wanted her except for what she could do for him. The “love” scenes between them were a joke.
I could go on but…do not waste your time on this book and certainly not on the 2nd one coming out. I wouldn’t read it even if I was paid to.

Could EASILY see this book turned into a TV show. A lot happens in just one book! I love how Maeve and Mal’s relationship was truly a slow burn but also introduced relationship obstacles that felt realistic to the story. Their relationship felt real not written. It was a great read. Had some typos and could’ve used an edit but I honestly enjoyed this! Totally recommend!

Screaming, crying, throwing up. This book was everything my wizard loving self needed. I instantly connected with the FMC and fell head over heels in love with the very morally grey MMC. If you love badass characters with magic, touch her and die vibes, this book is for you! I will not include any spoilers because you should experience everything first hand. I cannot wait for the next book!
