This was my first time reading this author. I can’t say I’ll take another chance. It’s not a dark mafia story, which is fine. There’s a secret baby, which was done quite well. She didn’t keep the child a secret for a stupid reason, and she didn’t start sleeping with him again while still keeping the child a secret. I hate both of those scenarios. I do enjoy when they discover their child years later in an unexpected way, and seeing his mini twin fits that bill. He immediately was committed to his son, and he didn’t lose his mind at Elena when he found out. Those were probably the only really solid parts of this story though.
You have to suspend a lot of belief in this book. We are to believe that Elena has gone from a young single mom to the CEO of New York City’s largest company, becoming a millionaire in just a couple years since starting her company. She must be an incredible mastermind, except she spends the entire rest of the book behaving pretty foolishly. Certainly not some insanely intelligent boss bish, but often a little TSTL. Dominic is the head of the Cosa Nostra and known by the nickname Death, but he doesn’t live up to either title. He has a couple scenes where he “enjoys” beating someone with his sharp rings, but that’s it. He makes unwise decisions otherwise.
The editing is atrocious . It is very distracting and completely pulled me out of the story. Just in the very first 30 pages there are multiple missing or misused words, and name changes. Lucas is sometimes Lucas and sometimes Luca, and David Peterson becomes Peter intermittently. This becomes the norm throughout the entire book. It reads like a rough draft TBH. These things should have been picked up.
Lucas’ speech vacillates between mature for his age and too childish. He also waffles between American and British English, referring to his mother as both Mummy and Mommy. Seeing as he’s an American child, it would not make sense for him to refer to her as Mummy. In an early scene she describes Lucas as having the same dark brown eyes as his father. But later she describes Marcus as having the same piercing blue eyes as Dominic. Maybe they change color? When Dominic sees Lucas for the first time he says “he has blue eyes and a sharp jaw like every other Romano in the world”. The rest of the book everyone has blue eyes. Make up your mind. I hate when there no continuity in a story.
I pushed through the horrible editing and inconsistencies, and even the silly juvenile writing, but when this naive woman tell the head of the mafia that she’s going to go up against his uncle alone and try to get information out of him to force him to back out of a war, I just couldn’t. The uncle has already threatened her and her son if Dominic doesn’t hand over leadership. But this foolish girl thinks she can take him down? I mean, at that point, she deserves whatever he dishes out as she’s clearly too stupid to live.
This is really one of the most childish mafia stories I’ve read. Im not sure how these people became heads of the family, because the decision they make are so foolish. Dominic has Elena and his child move in with him for safety, his uncle not only admits to knowing about them but threatens their safety, but they’re all pretending he has no idea that she knows who he is. As if he won’t hurt her if she doesn’t admit to knowing. Elena keeps “pretending” she is clueless and lets herself be alone with the uncle. Dominic is shocked to learn “everyone” in the mafia world knows about Elena and Lucas. Really? They are in your house, you have guards on them, and Lucas looks just like him. Just because you put your head in the sand doesn’t mean everyone else does. After Elena foolishly lets herself be taken, a month goes by after the ordeal and she says “Dominic doesn’t have his bodyguards follow me everywhere like he used to, he trusts I can handle myself just fine now.” Based on WHAT!? She has been nothing but foolish and TSTL and NO mafia man would ever allow his woman and child to “handle themself”. Especially after being taken once already. Not just taken, but she willingly left with the uncle. Come on.
If this were a first draft, then heavily edited, it would be promising. The premise was good, and the secret baby portion as spot on. But overall, a let down.
Ciao Fenici, benvenuti a New York City insieme a me.

I feel that for such an attractive synopsis, it should at least be a three or four-star book—something somewhat decent. Honestly, I was super excited to read it because, to be honest, it really caught my attention, and that’s why I voted for it.
That said, it’s not a book I would read again. I found the story basic and not very exciting for my taste. It felt like a Wattpad story with a good plot and some edits that made it stand out a bit. It really had the potential to be better.
As for the main characters, this pair felt so boring in every sense of the word. At first, I thought it was going to be a "wow" because the way both perspectives developed at the beginning was good. However, as the chapters went by, it became frustrating. I couldn’t take their relationship seriously. I swear it felt like reading a story written by a teenager on Wattpad, just with better edits—but still not very remarkable. In my opinion, there’s nothing “dark” about this; it’s more like vanilla with an attempt at being dark (if that was one of its tropes).
Their brothers and all the problems related to the organization were more interesting to me than the main story itself.
Despite everything, I would recommend it to someone looking for something simple and with no expectations.
The Don’s Hidden Heir by Celeste Riley is the story of Dominic and Elena. Seven years ago, she just left him. No reason. Just gone. Now, he’s back. He’s going to own this town and Elena. She had her reasons for leaving, she couldn’t tell him. Now, there are secrets and surprises that could destroy everything.
Games being played here by just about everyone! Danger and threats abound, keeping both of them ready for anything. Some parts pushed the line of believability…but, overall this was a good story!
Good read, my only complaint is the proof reading/editing. I mean I myself am not the best and even I could see the errors and that was driving me crazy! That is the reason for 4 ⭐️
I will be reading the next books as I do want to know what is going to happen with the brothers.
Good storyline and characters. Additional family books will be good reading. Major complaint: Why has no one PROOF READ THIS BEFORE PUBLISHING? It is so very distracting with the major grammatical errors and extra words and incorrect character references. Celeste Riley has good storyline writing skills, BUT PROOF IT! PLEASE PROOF YOUR BOOKS AND EDIT.
Recomendada!
I enjoyed the H/h it had a very good story, character building. My only complaint was all the misspelled words or wrong words through the entire book. She definitely needed a proof reader. Sherrie
7 years ago. They were I’m love until she witnessed the try monster he was. She left him because she was pregnant & feared what it be would mean for their child. Now, he’s back. What could happen to the son of the Don
I loved the story but the misspelling and grammatical errors were maddening. Why is it so hard to have someone proofread your book? I’d recommend but I get easily distracted with avoidable problems.
This book grips your interest from page 1, and holds it until the last word!! Fantastic shoot out screens. Passionate Love and all our Emotions are heightened to fever pitch!!
Yes there was a spanking and handcuffs in one scene but not enough to make it dark. For me the best part was the discovery of the secret child, other than that I skimmed most of the book.
