With the Paragon’s target on their backs, Astrea and Varojin find themselves temporarily exiled from Talmaris for the safety of its people. But upon returning to Talmaris with news of their discovery, Astrea and her friends receive an ultimatum from the Emperor. If they refuse to halt their investigation, they’ll suffer the consequences. So, with few choices and fewer allies, Astrea’s only option is take the conniving Victor Nazarov up on his nefarious offer of support.

After finishing book two I was very excited for this book. We start a few weeks after the ending of book 2.

Again Astrea goes through so much, she is still struggling with what has happened to her. But she is also so strong because she tries to not break down. She faces her past and while that's hard she still keeps standing.

This book had a bit less action that the previous book, there was a lot of planning in this book and doing research. But when there was action, I was sitting on the tip of my chair. Especially after that ending!

I loved being back in this universe and with these amazing characters. And I can't wait to read the next book😊

Last but not least I want to thank the author for providing me with an earc.

Lots to unpack in this one!

So much is happening! Az is struggling a lot but finds herself and her strength. Relationships evolve, new layers to side characters are added in! Prophecies and books and secrets....oh my! This one kept me on my toes for sure. Exciting read with a lot of development. Can't wait for the next one. Wonderfully narrated by Brielle Rose!

The following is my honest review for amid twisted chaos, thank you to H.E Bauman for sending me the ARC.

Amid twisted chaos is the 3rd book in the darkened skies series and I was so excited to see it in my inbox. I immediately left the book I was reading and started this arc.

We started off right where we left off in into whispering shadows, Astrea and the gang hiding in Novaria after their last encounter with the Paragon and Nazarov.

We dive right into more world building, visiting new locations, and learning more history, both Helosian and Novarian. I really enjoyed all the new information, as well as the new characters we were introduced to. We also learned more about side characters that weren’t so fleshed out/didn’t have as much “screen time” in the previous books.

Seeing Astrea grow as a person, and learn to be more gentle to herself, while also pushing herself to work through her fear helped make her healing process more real and round her out more as a character. I really enjoyed how real she is with her struggles and how she fights to overcome them. Basically I just love her. She really is growing so much in this book.

I also loved all the training, seeing Az get stronger, still battle with some self doubt, but continue to show up for herself. Having the whole group train together was a lovely way to learn more about different powers; and to see them all interact and have some banter.

I loved how Jin and Az progressed as a couple, they’re even more in sync and wholesome, with, some spice sprinkled on top. The slow burn was definitely worth it. I like the subtle hints of romance between other characters too, it doesn’t feel too forced or in your face, which I appreciate.

Overall I really enjoyed the book, the ending had me on the edge of my seat and I’m dying to read the next one.

****ARC review without spoilers****
Overall rating: 9/10
Spice level: 7.5/10

I couldn’t stop reading. I’m not joking, I barely slept until I finished it. Lovers of TOG will adore this addition to the Darkened Skies series. There is so much adventure in this book and the stakes are HIGH. 😳 There are so many villains and it’s hard to tell which one is the worst. And I CAN NOT WAIT for the big prophecy reveal.

Some small details that I loved:

✨The downloadable bonus chapters of Jin’s POV are my favorite part of the entire series

✨Troubled love interest that is SO SWEET 🥹

✨Alllll of the representation. And I mean all of it.

✨Profound journey of healing through trauma

✨ Heart-warming found family antics

✨ The number of times I said “Ohhhhh are they in loveeee?”

Depth notes for my bookish peeps:
H. E. Bauman knows how to tell a story. The characters, their powers, the system of magic, and the politics are so well thought out and so unique to this series. I honestly could not predict a single thing about this plot, which is impressive. I loved the expansion of the world building and getting to experience more of it in this book. I’m honestly sad that I read this as an ARC because I do not want to wait for the next one. 🫠

A month has passed since the explosive events at the end of book 2 and our dynamic duo (FMC [Astrea] - a highly relatable, academically-minded librarian/lightbringer - and MMC [Jin] – a charismatic and handsome prince/fireweaver) and their protection detail are hiding from the Paragon (void magic wielders) on a secret military base following the revelation that they are central to the void mages plans. The story continues as we follow them in their efforts to outwit the Paragon’s two rival leaders (The One and Victor Naxarov) and find a book that may hold clues to their power before they do.

The theme for this book is an extension of the last, following Astrea’s personal growth as she deals with the mental anguish of living through and surviving the traumatic events at the end of book 2. Thankfully most of the petty and immature behaviour that grated on me in the last book is gone, moving from ‘Boo hoo, I want to be the one who solves the problem’, through ‘Just give me a minute, I was tortured you know’ into ‘I will push myself to the absolute max to keep my people safe’. Her relationship with Jin continues to grow and we are beginning to see how they (and their powers) can work together in battle situations, which is exciting and gives Astrea the opportunity to show the grit she showed in book 1.

We are definitely going on a journey with this series and I feel like things are picking up speed now. With events unfolding so rapidly in this book compared to the others (but still having room for cozy and romantic scenes), this book is my favourite in the series so far. It has everything you need to keep you binge reading well into the early hours and after two books I am absolutely committed to finding the answers to the riddles that have plagued the characters throughout.

I would highly recommend this series to those who love political intrigue, characters with complex motivations, and unique magic systems. If you have made it this far in the series already, you will not be disappointed!

For transparency, I was delighted to receive an e-ARC copy of this book in advance of its release. I cannot wait for the next book, for Astrea to find out exactly how she is connected to the Paragon and for the inevitable heart-breaking betrayal and death I have felt looming all the way thorough this latest addition to the series.

Literal chills.
H.E. Bauman is such a great storyteller. There’s a little bit of everything in this series. You have mysteries, murder, action, adventure, deep dark secrets, villains, romance, royals, magic, representation and so much more!

This is the third book in Darkened Skies series. This book picks up with Az dealing with PTSD after her last encounters with the Paragon and Nazarov. They start off in hiding and try to unravel the mystery of the Paragon and the prophecy that is tied to Az and Jin. This book is packed with action, romance and high stakes. Their quest for knowledge turns out to be a rather dangerous ones and full of ultimatums.

🥰LIKES🥰
- The character building and growth.
- The representation-it was a normal and accepted in this world to be free and open about their sexual orientation. Also the diversity of the characters. They are all from different cultures and backgrounds coming together as friends and allies to fight common foes.
- The world building.
- Az and Jin: it’s so beautiful watching the friendship blossom into a solid foundation for a healthy relationship. Jin is so supportive and listens to Az and asks her opinions. Jin and Astrea take “no one left behind” to a whole new level. They would tear and burn the world down for the ones they love.
- Az: it’s so refreshing to have a real character with flaws, who struggles with anxiety and PTSD. We get to see her find her inner strength and face her fears. She is more powerful than she could have ever dreamed.
- The magic system- I can’t say enough at how well the magic system, especially the lightbringers, was thought out. The colors alone were so consistent and important to the plot. It was beautiful how they played into relationships!

🗯️Favorite quotes:
“Eyes on me, Az”

“Those things don’t mean you’re broken, Az. You’re still here. You’re still holding on”-Jin

“We can only be so vigilant. We still have to live.” -Jin

“And I think the most important lesson I’ve learned is that healing is not some light switch that we can flip. It’s a different journey for everyone, and being scared is often part of it. Some days will feel manageable while others feel impossible.”-Zephrine

First, I want to thank H.E. Bauman for the ALC (Advanced Listener Copy).

“Amid Twisted Chaos” by H.E. Bauman is the third book in the Darkened Skies Series. In case you haven’t been following along on this review journey or have yet to read the other books in the series, I will give a brief synopsis. This series follows Astrea and Varojin as they rediscover their friendship due to unforeseen circumstances. They are faced with a complex prophecy and a group of mages with a unique magic they’ve never encountered before. They and their group of friends are on a journey to stop this evil magic from spreading and potentially destroying the world as it currently is.

This particular book was focused more on recovering, training, and regrouping from all the events of the last book. Because of this, the beginning did feel a bit slower, almost like taking a breath (the last book had a tough ending). However, it was a needed pacing to prepare for the end of the book, where things began to happen quickly. There is also more diving into the romance between As and Jin (and some other characters who I will leave unnamed) as well as a tad more on the spice scale than the second book.

As this was an audiobook, I also want to mention the narrator, Brielle Rose, and the phenomenal job she did! She does a wonderful job at expressing emotions through the inflection of her voice. Also, the tempo of her narration changes with the intensity of each scene. I also appreciate how she is able to change her voice and accent to differentiate between the different characters.

This series has action, magic, romance, friendship, found families, and anxiety representation. There is a moderate amount of cursing. There are also open door bedroom scenes. This is definitely an adult romantasy that I highly recommend for those who love a well-rounded story, well written characters, and a timeline that makes sense with the events occurring. I am excited to continue this series!

Me ~25% into this book: formulating eloquent review statements in preparation

Me now: *balls them up and throws them out the window*

OH. MY. GOOD GOD.

When I tell you this book took me OUT. The way it dealt with trauma? The friendship? The spicy scenes? Chef’s kiss, 100/10, screaming, crying, throwing up, literally any phrase to describe the absolutely feral state this shit put me in.

****SPOILERS BELOW***

The stakes were immediately raised as we meet Astrea and friends recovering at their hideout and Nazarov (or as I like to call him That Bitchass Motherfucker) dreamwalks to everybody. New fear unlocked, my god I hate him. I’ve never wanted to punch a man in the face so badly (and I was literally screaming when Astrea beat his ass and did just that). I was so proud of Astrea for taking charge and pushing the others to find out more information, and every time she told one of the voids to fuck off or go fuck themselves it added a year to my life. The scene in Club Twilight had me absolutely raging and the payoff for that plus the HORRENDOUS events of Into Whispering Shadows was just so, so good. Cressida continues to be an absolute star, the ongoing bit of Lucian’s exes being helpful is hilarious, and I swear Adi and Marko literally made spring come early in my town.

The new revelations surrounding magic and family ties was absolutely brilliant and I cannot WAIT for book 4.

Also

“I’m pretty sure I’ve always loved you. You are everything to me, Az. Everything.”

I need an ambulance.

GO READ THIS BOOK/SERIES!!!

Amid Twisted Chaos is the third book in the Darkened Skies series. This book picks up with Az dealing with PTSD after her last encounters with the Paragon and Nazarov. They start off in hiding as they try to unravel the mystery of the Paragon and the prophecy that is tied to Az and Jin. This book is packed with romance and high stakes that just keep getting higher. Their quest for knowledge turns out to be a rather dangerous one full of ultimatums.

The book starts off slow with touches of what happened in the past so if you didn't read the books all at once it helps connect the dots which I find absolutely fantastic as I've going through the Audio Books myself.

there is always tons of Worldbuilding so you truly feel immersed into the world the author has created. Her touches on PTSD and Anxiety are truly relatable and I feel are represented accurately and tastefully. The character trauma and growth are phenomenally done.

Since I am listening to the audio books Let's touch on the Narrator:

I think Brielle Rose has done an excellent job at portraying the characters, their emotions, all while weaving magic of their own into such an amazing story. I think they narrate at a good pace and speak clearly, while they are understandable they don't just drone on or feel like you are being lectured which is excellent! My only complaint is on occasion the accent and characters do get lost in one another But overall I enjoy this narrator and their voice.

This story is full of twists and turns and magic and political drama.
The FMC Astrea isn’t used to batting, missions, training, or the fear that comes with it. She’s doing her best to transverse this new world. And the MMC Varojin, Jin, has been living in this world for far longer than he wished. And he never wanted Astrea stuck in this world.

But they’re leaning on each other and the friends that they have surrounded themselves with. This is a thick book, and almost has too much information in it. But each secret that is uncovered pulls you deeper into the story. Trying to figure out what is going on and where it’s headed.

And then the story keeps delving deeper into their relationship and the dynamic around them. Match this up with the treacherous navigation of the political world and it’s just makes for a really intense book.

I enjoyed this story and how it’s developed over the last 3 (and now 4) books. I can’t wait to see how it all turns out in the last book.

I received an ARC of this story for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review.

I don’t even know where to start with this review, but I think we agree that a book is great when you cry a couple times (or more but who needs to know that).
First of all I wanna thank H.E. Bauman for never ending her books with a cliffhanger (just lots of high stakes😬).
There were so many lovely scenes, others were funny, some were absolutely thrilling like feel your heartbeat speed up kind of thrilling. I don’t wanna spoil for anyone but the crew is all for impossible heists (so if you like Six of Crows you’ll love this one too) also there were many plot twists and shocking truths revealed as Az and Jin fight a fate they never wanted but might just be forced to be part of it with no way out.
Anyways, I can’t believe that I’ve read all the books in this series (remembers the bonus content on the author’s webpage 😏)and now I have to wait a whole +10 days to get the next book.

:i am part of the author’s street team but my thoughts and comments are my own
(The arc sign ups are open btw!!!!)

I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy a blend of adventure, darkness, magic, politics, comfort, and romance. Bauman's storytelling prowess ensures an immersive experience from start to finish.

Astrea's journey in Amid Twisted chaos is a compelling exploration of how trauma can affect us, along with the intricate landscapes of healing and resilience. Her love story with Jin is romantic and emotional, and the trust and foundation they’ve built is beautiful. They remain one of my favorite fictional couples.

The shift from research to daring action kept me engaged, and the magic system expands organically in this installment. Seeing Astrea step into that magical power was satisfying to say the least.

Though I longed for more moments with certain characters, the subtle hints of impending political tension along with the other magical and interpersonal developments leave me eagerly awaiting the next book!

H.E. Bauman manages to enthrall me with her newest addition - Amid Twisted Chaos (ATC). To start off, I will admit it took me a bit to get into this book compared to the last two. (It may be due to a reading slump 😩 that I was powering through in order to read this book.) But I won’t be sure until a reread occurs, hence the lower rating this time around.

Back to ATC, I really felt for Astrea in this one. She was definitely struggling here after having to deal with the trauma that occurred in the last one. (I don’t want to be too spoilery) 🤐🤐 I loved reading about the development of her lightbringer abilities and the constant support she got from Jin and her friends. Jin is a big green flag as a boyfriend and I’m all for it. I loved the insight into the Paragon as I didn’t know who to trust in this one. It was like choosing between the lesser of two evils here with Nazarov and the One. I’m also waiting for the downfall of the Emperor Aelius and something tells me not to trust Lucian as well.

I’m excited to see what will happen next! If you’ve made it this far into the series - you know you won’t be disappointed as you get taken on a rollercoaster once again with H.E. Bauman at the control. I definitely recommend this book and my rating is more of a 4.2/5⭐️

ARC Review, Spoiler free

(a different version of the review will come eventually)

I will always be grateful with H.e Bauman for giving me the opportunity for being part of her ARC team and have the chance to read her amazing books.

I really get to love Az, Jin and the other characters that have my heart.

I love the way the author writes, it’s precise and it makes you look deeper into everything that’s happening in the story. The magic, the tension, the characters development, the storyline. This book series has everything.

All my reviews for this series have been 4,5 or 5 stars and believe me it’s totally deserved. I truly recommend this series if you want to read something cozy, with found family, a strong main character, a supportive love between the main characters.

This book deserves my five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book three in the Darkened Skies Series takes. Place a couple of few after leaving the palace for Jin and Astrea’s safety. The team has been at the secluded base for some time now not getting any closer to finding out how to take down the Paragon. With nothing else to do besides training and cleaning Astrea has an idea on how to get answers and a way to get off the base. With more questions than answers the team goes back to Talmaris to rejoin with everyone they left behind, hoping they will have some answers after all the time spent apart.

The girls reunion made my heart soar causing the tears to pour down my face. I absolutely love their friendship. I was nice getting to learn more about the newer team members and seeing some of their personality come to light. Jin is so loving, he can read Astrea like a book, knows when to leave her alone or when she needs him.

We do get some answers about the Paragon, their secrets and more, but we also learn about family secrets and what that could mean for the future

*Advance reader review - copy received from author*

This series is just amazing! As alawsys the story is full of twist and turns that will keep you reading more and more. The magic system is always interesting to read about and the political drama is honestly so well done that I love reading about it and never get bored. The author does a great job at immersing the reader into the story in an effortless manner. I love the love story we get in this series because it is one so beautiful and you can see that they are perfect for each other. I also love that this story touched in deeper topics and you can see the effects trauma has on people. I am honestly so exited to continue this series and see what happens at the end. If you are looking for a good series to read then I would absolutely recommend this one.

"Give yourself some grace. You're doing a fine job, Astrea. I know it probably doesn't feel like it, but you are."

Amid Twisted Chaos does a great job of mixing cozy, slice-of-life scenes with intrigue, cinematic action, great character interactions and development, and political drama. I'm always so amazed at how every element of the Darkened Skies books are juggled and handled!

We also got to see Astrea deal with doubts, worries, fears, and trauma in a way we haven't quite had to up to now. I know a lot of people will feel seen through her ❤️

And of course I can't leave a review without hyping up Jin, top-tier book boyfriend. I'm more of a cinnamon roll/golden retriever lover than morally grey, and Jin just KEEPS SERVING. With a side of deadly, of course.

Thank you H.E. Bauman for sending an E-ARC, this review is freely given.

That was one heck of ride. After the events of Book 2, our leading lady Astrea is going through some serious healing and trying to get herself together, with the help of her friends and loved ones. At the same time, they also have to figure out what the Paragon's deal is.

Book 3 has less action but the mystery of everything surrounding the Paragon and how Astrea and Jin are connected to them was so intriguing I had to know more.

Also Az and Jin as a couple is just chef's kiss. I love them so much.

I can't wait to see how book 4 will go!

This is an amazing fantasy romance with some of the most wonderfully strong characters. Series tropes: slow burn, enemies to lovers only one bed ranxiety rep family secrets mystery! Also, peep the spicy character art Book three was (absolutely no surprise here) so good! It ended with one tiny sentence that gave me FULL BODY chills it was so powerful. And instantly left me ready for more!
It's book3 so can't say much more than that. But trust that if you love great world building, characters you instantly connect to, and chunky books that you fly through, pick this series up!

This is my favorite book of the series so far. Things move along at a faster clip, the threat and danger come to the forefront, and the characters continue to work well together. The trick with the book is probably my favorite thing, I love Marko's character. It's great to see Astrea come into her own. The book ends somewhat on a cliffhanger, but it also resolves events from within the book. All-in-all, a satisfying read.

Note: there are more explicit bedroom scenes in this book, but they're easy to skim over if that's not your thing.

As always, I am breathless. The writing is easy to absorb. The world is amazing!! The characters all have their own depth and features. It's always refreshing to come back to this world when I took a break. I really enjoy the dynamic of everyone together. Lucian is.....a man. I'm not a fan, which is probably the point LOL. I read so many different books that I kept waiting for him to be the hook. Marko is quiet and stoic. It's enjoying reading about him and Adi. I hope we get more from them. Lennor and Civan i need more from. They're still a bit new but I want moreeeee. Overall i need the last two books ASAP to binge.

H.E. Bauman continues to keep me intrigued.

I loved seeing the team in action and the high stakes missions they went on. Not to mention we got a further development in Astrea & Jin’s relationship (which was cute 🥰). I loved seeing cress’s parents, zephyrine, and saros again 🫶🏼

It will be interesting to see how she continues this series after this most recent cliffhanger. The only thing I wish would be different about this series is the pacing… it seems a bit slow and I wish it was faster (especially this far into the series… but I digress)

I can’t wait to read more in book 4

Hearts

I love Jin & Astrea. They are so sweet together. The backdrop of the story is a war is brewing between the Paragon and.. whatever country/person between claiming Jin & Astrea.
The book has action but it centers on Astrea , her feelings of healing from last book's trauma, her growth as a magic welder and person, and her understanding of love - Jin and the friends and family she has made over the years and this journey.
Love it. Some new crushes introduced and very light banner. Mostly healing and love.

Just when you think that the story can’t get better, it does.
I’ve truly enjoyed this series from the beginning and I can’t wait to see where it goes and how it ends, but this book might be my favorite of the series so far. Why you may ask? Let me tell you.

•Found family
•Slow burn
•REPRESENTATION
•Action, action, action
•Self recognition & growth
•Cinnamon roll men

My only complaint? NEEDING THE NEXT BOOK ASAP

Thank you to the author for an audiobook arc!

This is my honest review for Amid Twisted Chaos by H. E. Bauman

This books is a lot of planning, research and prep with some final major action towards the end of the book.

I still really enjoy this narrator and they do a great job managing all the characters that come back in to the story in this book.

I am committed to hearing the rest of Astrea and groups story and looking forward to the next book. Now I am going to eat some chocolate cake.

Although I didn't love this book as much as the first two, it was still an enjoyable installment in the Darkened Skies series! It just felt a bit slow to me, and the stakes felt low somehow. The story didn't have any real urgency until the heist in Kalama, and that's when it got good for me.

So good!! This series had such a nice slow burn, it this book definitely has a little more heat. But the really great part is the story. The magic, the fighting, the growth of the characters has all been so good. Super excited to know there are 2 more books coming later this year!!
