Nate Narek is barely keeping his head above water.
But no one would guess that by looking at him. He's got camouflaging himself down to an art form. Feelings? As far as anyone else is concerned, he's happy and satisfied all the time. Only he isn't. Nate's always been the glue that holds all the shit around him together, and he's afraid that if he shows weakness, those people will be disappointed in him. It's better to keep it all in than to be a burden, right? Then suddenly there's a Devil of Vitality at his door, demanding he open up and let him into his twisted thoughts. A Devil who takes sexual deviancy and pigheadedness to a whole new level. For the first time in his life, Nate's no longer sure he can handle things on his own. Too bad Kaz won't let him run off to anyone else for help.
Kazimir Ambrose has a few...issues.
He wouldn't say they stem from his mother abandoning him at a young age, or the fact that his father remarried his work and was never around. But his cousin Baikal Void probably would. And does. Repeatedly. Especially when he wants to get under Kaz's skin. Typically, Kazimir can pretend like it doesn't affect him, but after one particularly frustrating night, he decides it's time he does something to prove the rest of the mafia wrong about him. If the other Devil's can manage being in relationships, he can as well. How hard could it be to make someone irrevocably and undeniably fall for him?
When Kaz sets his sights on an uninterested Nate, the two are thrust into uncharted territory. What starts out as a means to prove himself quickly turns into an obsession that Kazimir can't seem to shake. There's something about Nate's sadness that calls to the monster in Kaz, and if he's learned anything from the Brumal mafia, it's that taking what you want, no matter the consequence, is always the right move. Nate tries to resist, but with Kazimir showing up anywhere and everywhere, it soon becomes apparent he's only got two options. Give in to the Devil.
Or be taken by him anyway.
Trigger Warning: This is a stand-alone dark romance which means there are many themes that some might find disturbing. Some of these include, but are not limited to, dub-con, violence, a pushy male lead who lacks awareness of social boundaries, and explicit sexual content not suitable for all readers. Please be sure to read the Author's Note for a complete list of warnings! HEA guaranteed! Though this book takes place on the same planet as the previous three in the series, each of these is a stand-alone. The events of this book take place sometime during the end of Call of the Sea and after, but neither that book nor any other needs to be read first to fully enjoy this novel.
Librarians, please don't add books. I stay up to date and add them myself and have ended up with many multiple copies because others add them later. Thank you!

I am very iffy with this book. I can't decide whether I like it or not. The books in this series follow a certain pattern of repetition and that's perfectly fine. I was aware that it might get a bit boring at some point, simply because of the repetition factor. The author also has a habit of repeating smaller things from time to time, I'm used to it and it hasn't bothered me so far, because the wow factor has outweighed anything else in the other books so far. Unfortunately, I miss that with this book. I don't know if it's a certain numbness on my part. Anyway, the first half of the book felt like work. I had to torture myself and still had hope that it would get better. Fortunately, I wasn't disappointed. The second half of the book was so much better. And I'm kind of happy now with how everything turned out and ended. I think my main problem was that I couldn't relate to Nate at all. His psychological problems were just not tangible for me and I couldn't get into his head. Unfortunately, this made the book lose a lot of its appeal for me. I found it easier with Kaz, although he was still difficult to understand. Later on, I had my wow effect with him.
“From here on out, the only thing allowed near that sweet ass of yours is me. You want to be filled? You’ll get my fingers, my tongue, or my cock. Nothing else goes in there. If I find out you disobeyed, I’ll make you sleep, eat, and breathe with my cock shoved so deep you’ll be begging me to pull out after the first hour. Understood?” 🖤🖤🖤
Kaz set his elbows on the edge of the table and watched him, and when Nate didn’t glare or tell him to stop, he felt something odd bloom in the center of his chest. Something a lot like contentment. People were kept around as entertainment or out of duty and convenience. He couldn’t recall the last time being in someone’s presence had actually put him at ease. Couldn’t recall the last time someone had made him feel comfortable. Made him feel like…he was home. 🖤🖤🖤
In conclusion, I love Kaz and can tolerate Nate. This book also felt like an endless therapy session for me. I'm not a fan of therapy (this is a personal thing, I know it's important, I just can't handle it, sorry). I think that's the aspect that made this feel more like work to read.
Regardless of what I have written so far, this does not affect my rating. These are all subjective perceptions and preferences, not every story can be perfect for me. I continue to love Chani for her absolutely crazy characters, who have always been unique personalities so far. What I really have to criticize, however, is the lack of plot. Some new characters are introduced and you get a tiny insight into the structure of the Brumal Mafia, but not enough. There is something like a plot but I'm not sure if it serves any other purpose than to introduce new characters. I know the author is really good at writing plot, so I'm disappointed that there's almost none here.
I would like to thank BookSirens for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
I keep waiting for a Chani book to blow me away, and while I really enjoyed the world building and the whole brumal mafia/retinue vibe, Kaz and Nate's "romance" just didn't hit for me. Honestly I think I'm just over the whole "rape first, be my boyfriend/can't really do-feel-express love but I'll Mafia/Royal the shit outta your dick-ass-heart after" flex. After the beginning, i thought Kaz's characterization was great, but Nate as his foil i just could not connect with! but around 70%, when the "romance" part of the relationship kicked in for me, I did love when Kaz actually stood up for Nate, whose self sacrificing personality was a bit exhausting for me to read ngl. And OFC the standard third act drama was pretty ridiculous but I sorta enjoyed it this time around!
this was a decent read that i'm sure a lot of people will love, but i thought too much of this book was spent navigating the sex life and interiority of a pretty textbook-for-Chani relationship that i would love to see elevated/shaken up in the next release!
still very much captivated by the uniqueness of Chani's world, and Flix's story is up next in Devil May Fall so that should be pretty wild because he was great in this!
nauuuurrrrr not my highly anticipated read being disappointing😭😭😭😭
i could not vibe with kaz and nate as a couple. the other books in the series do SUCH a good job at creating two distinct characters with traits or issues that complement each other so completely, you have no choice but to admit they belong together, even if their dynamic is unhealthy and dark af. with kaz and nate, i didn’t feel that. kaz just feels like he’s making decisions on a whim, no actual thought or feeling behind it. at first, i found it lowkey charming bc he’s giving idiot in love (even tho he’s not in love yet atp) bc he’s trying his best to get himself in a relationship and keep a man and he literally knows NOTHING about any of it and it’s amusing as fuck…..like mans is a goof fr !!😂 all the other crazies from the other books are always so intense and focused 100% when pursing their man and they’re very specific about who they choose…..when kaz is pursuing nate, it just felt arbitrary bc he just wants *A* boyfriend and not necessarily nate. even tho kaz claims it has to be nate, i just didn’t believe him. like why? and the same goes for nate. i didn’t believe him when he decides he wants to be with kaz…..why?? even later in the book when they’re in love…..i’m like okay, sure, whatever y’all say…..i just think the author didn’t do the in-depth work to match and weave their characterizations together and prove to the reader that they make sense together and no one else could be as perfect for each other as they are, as was done in the previous books. there was so much wasted opportunity here. the premise was a unique take on fake dating….not quite fake dating but…..close enough…..unforch, there was none of the fun that comes with fake dating like kaz introducing nate to baikal or the brumal members and really playing it up…..SMH!!!!!…..a fake dating trope crime!!!!
there is a whole lot of zane in this book and it’s annoying. i like zane as a character and i’m actually kinda hoping he’ll get his own book, like i would KILL for a devil of vitality who’s a bottom, u have no idea!!!!😩😩😩😩 and i read the TWs at the beginning so i saw: “While Kaz does have sex with someone else (off page), there is NO cheating in this book.” okay so i’m expecting that to happen BEFORE kaz gets with nate right? no, kaz has sex with nate the first time, then they kinda go their separate ways, both thinking they’re done with each other. kaz has sex with zane, his fuck buddy of like 5 years. then after, finally decides he’s gonna pursue nate fr and make him his boyfriend. eurrghhh, personal preference, but i HATE it when there’s sex with other people after things have already happened between the mmcs. and then zane causes their third act break up???🙄 i mean kinda iconic bc zane admitted he did it for sport lmfaooo but i’m just like why is he here??😒 ironically tho, it made me more interested in zane and less interested in kaz and nate💀💀💀
kaz and nate do have their moments tho….i def found some of their quips funny as fuck🤣🤣 and the sexy hair moment had me cheesing🤭🤭 i just didn’t buying them being in love and wanting to spent the rest of their lives with each other🤷♀️
another thing…..for an underboss of the brumal mafia who runs half the fucking planet, kaz sure does a whole lot of NOTHING🤣🤣🤣 mans is never working lmfaoooo😭 how does he have time for all these boyfriend shenanigans fr🤨
as soon as i learned what a mendax was (a person who knows whether you’re telling the truth or lying, but also can’t lie themselves) i was SAT!!!!!!!!! plssssss i need a future book with a mendax mmc🙏🙏🙏😩😩😩
and pls for the love of fuck, can we get this queen an editor pls…..i’ve had it with the minimum 15 major typos every book😭😭

I was initially hesitant to read this book because of its mixed reviews, but I’m glad I did—I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nate and Kaz emerged as one of the sweetest couples in this series. Their chemistry was undeniable, while they explored some kinkiness, their connection felt more like making love than just sex.
This story may not have been as dark as the others, but it still depicted a toxic relationship. Both Nate and Kaz had their issues, but I appreciated how Kaz supported Nate in overcoming his insecurities about being a burden and worrying about what others thought. In return, Nate’s influence helped Kaz tackle his abandonment issues.
The only reason I'm giving this book four stars instead of five is because of the third-act breakup. I have a strong disdain for that trope, particularly when it involves cheating. It infuriates me. While Kaz didn’t cheat—instead, the conflict arose from a misunderstanding with Zane, his previous partner—I still found it frustrating. Zane’s presence was excessive, and the unresolved situation with the dagger left a bad taste in my mouth. The author brought it up in the last few chapters, but Nate didn't even ask Kaz about it, which felt like a significant oversight.
Furthermore, I wasn't impressed with the side characters in this book, and it reinforced my hatred for Baikal. Kaz's so-called friends did not deserve him. They were indifferent to his struggles and showed no willingness to help him save Nate when it mattered most.
It's no secret that I prefer darker books with dark characters, and Kazimir was absolute perfection. Getting to see why he is the way he is, and how he grows as a person when Nate comes into his life, was so enjoyable. Yes he does horrible things, especially at the beginning of their relationship, and he doesn't understand things the way other people do, but the way he takes care of Nate and works to give him whatever he needs to be happy... honestly I was crying at mutliple points of this book and I just love Kaz so much. I would have liked to see a confrontation with his father, but I can live without it.
Nate was equally endearing though and I just wanted to hug him so hard because he really needed it. I like how his mental health was explored also - with both characters it's not just a diagnosis label that gets slapped on them, we get to see why they behave the way they do, and we get to see them working through their issues. I loved how Nate didn't take any bullshit from Kaz, even knowing he's a Devil - none of the other neurotypical partners have had this kind of backbone and I loved seeing it. Nate is similar to Rabbit in the way he feels extreme loyalty to his family, but unlike Rabbit he stands up for himself with Kaz and he's actually the one setting the relationship boundaries, even though Kaz is in control. Both characters had really good growth and learnt a lot about themselves which I'm always a fan of. Their dynamic was just so good and they fit together perfectly!
I do have some small gripes though, but not enough to lower my rating. Again there are some spelling/wrong word issues, but it was much less than the previous installments. I also would have liked to see more of the friendships outside of the main relationship because this is very heavily focused on Nate and Kaz. Nate's family are featured often, but we don't even see Bay, who is effectively Nate's best friend, at all! There's also only one scene with Baikal - I wanted to see the Brumal meeting Nate and we didn't get that.
I also fucking hate Zane! What an absolute dickhead. I hope he redeems himself in his book but he hurt Nate, and then Nate hurt Kaz and that made me cry so much!! I would have liked to have been in Kaz's POV after Nate left to see him dealing with the emotions that came from that too.
I'm loving this series so much and I am way too invested in these characters 😂😂
"In the middle of his blood-stained kitchen, Nate found himself being consumed by the Devil with nowhere left to run."
I absolutely adore everything about Chani Lynn Feener's The Devils of Vitality series and Devil May Care is another masterpiece!
This is Nate and Kazimir's story (recall, Nate is Nuri's brother from His Dark Paradox and Kaz is the new Underboss to Baikal Void from Echo) and whilst this can be read as a standalone, I would strongly suggest you read the previous books in the series to totally immerse yourself in the universe.
Devil May Care won't be for everyone - the author provides some very clear warnings - and if dark romance including non-con and obsessive, stalker-type behaviour is not for you, then you may want to give it a miss. If, however, like me you love the darker MM sci-fi reads, with enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract, a totally psychopathic Devil and a sad and lonely people-pleaser with a few k*nks he wasn't aware of, not to mention allll the steamy times, then you need to download Devil May Care immediately!
"Something awoke inside of Kaz. Something foreign and jagged. Something potentially more dangerous than anything he’d ever experienced before."
Oh and rest assured despite their differences, there IS a HEA for Kaz and Nate 🖤.
Tropes: fake dating, enemies to lovers Feels: 2/5 Steam*: 3.5/5 Kinks: noncon, dubcon, bondage, toys Angst: medium HEA: yes Pairing: MM Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: rape, depression, panic attacks, disassociation, dead parents, violence, murder, sex with other after the MCs hook up, not cheating but OM drama in a hurtful/interfering way
3 stars is probably being generous, but I do like the author and I did start liking the book at the 70% mark.
Nate is 23 and working in a car shop while doing some illegal street racing on the side. He has a lot of mental health concerns, he's depressed, has panic attacks, had to raise his sister after his parents died, has had a lot of pressure on him and he's been a people pleaser as a result. He doesn't take care of himself well.
Kaz is in the Brumal Mafia and his last year of college. He's 20. He has a whole bunch of neurodivergent characteristics, he can't understand feelings. With his friends getting into close relationships, he feels insulted that they don't think he could be in a relationship. He decides to fake date someone to show them. And he sets his sights on Nate. Nate and Kaz met after Kaz bet on Nate in a race, only for Nate to lose him a bunch of money. Kaz takes his misplaced anger out on Nate and rapes him. A couple weeks pass where they have nothing to do with each other, Nate rejected Kaz's advances. Kaz resumes hooking up with his f*** buddy of many years Zane. Then Nate and Kaz interact some more and Kaz decides not to let Nate push him away and coerces him into fake dating him. But with real sex. And then not so fake dating.
Honestly this book is a bit of a train wreck until the 70% mark where the couple finally start to make a bit of sense as a couple. I like this author's world building usually and I like the intense relationships she creates between the characters, but this book didn't really work for me until the 70% mark and even then I was still disappointed. I felt like I couldn't settle into this story and get excited about the relationship. These characters felt like they didn't belong together for the longest time, like they were square pegs trying to go into a round hole. Have you ever had the feeling where you want to grab a hanger that an outfit is resting on and just shake the hanger until the clothes hang properly? That's how I felt with this book. But no matter how I shook it, the couple didn't fall into place.
It didn't seem like Nate was either attracted to or liked Kaz for over 60% of the book. Kaz was messy for a long time about what he wanted with Nate. I preferred Kal and the other Devils of Vitality because they were less wishy-washy and they knew what they wanted, they were very focused on their man. Kaz is really slow to get there and it makes the dynamic between Nate and Kaz less appealing / endearing / intense. Kaz and Nate just couldn't get on the same page, they didn't want the same things, they couldn't communicate and understand each other. They just seemed so incompatible. There were a lot of little moments where that just stood out. Like at the 55% mark, Nate is literally going soft because Kaz is doing something he doesn't like. They weren't both wanting it. At the 60% mark, they're like, giving up on their communication saying this is getting us nowhere. At the 65% mark, Nate is once again turned off by what Kaz is doing.
Minor annoyance - When Kaz inserts himself into Nate's movie night with his sister Neve, you really have to suspend disbelief about how that night plays out. Kaz really thought Nate and his sister were going to a porno and bought tickets to the wrong movie?! Who the hell goes to a p**** with their sibling? The author should have played this scene as Kaz deliberately separating Nate from his sister and not him just being dumb. And they spent the duration of the movie banging in a private room and then casually joining Neve and her boyfriend for dinner after? Awkward.
Another minor annoyance - I like this author's world building. But she should have mentioned an "onus" before randomly springing it on us at the 86% mark out of nowhere. She built up to the idea of a possessio and a consort much better in the other Devils of Vitality books.
Typos annoyed me too. Covey should be convey, access should be excess, discrete should be discreet, rouge should be rogue.
At about the 70% mark, the couple did start to show that they actually had feelings for each other. They started to communicate a little bit better and negotiate their relationship more successfully. Kaz started to show that he could care for Nate and partner him. And Nate had some moments where he stood up for himself and showed that he could stand the brumal Mafia life. This book wasn't all negative either, there were some funny moments and steamy moments. There were some moments where I was reminded about what I like from this author. But this wasn't the best written book of hers and Nate/Kaz weren't her best couple.
About the other man drama... Kaz had sex with his f*** buddy of many years Zane after having sex with / raping Nate. Yeah Nate and Kaz were not together and Nate wanted nothing to do with Kaz, it wasn't cheating, but still icky. But what made the other man drama annoying was that Kaz confided in Zane about Nate, talking about his relationship with Nate behind Nate's back with his fuck buddy. And of course Zane had bad intentions, and he interfered with their relationship and rubbed his relationship with Kaz in Nate's face and tried to hurt him and mess with their relationship. I dislike that type of drama, no no for me. I wanted Kaz to just stab Zane dead when he interfered, it would have been in character for Kaz given the other people he killed for Nate. I don't want to see a redemption arc for Zane, I don't really care that Zane helped out when Nate was in danger.
Some notable moments:
"That wasn’t even getting into the sounds…Good Light. The shortness of breath as Nate had struggled to contain himself and hide that he was enjoying it had been so hot. And later, once he’d lost his mind and come completely undone for Kaz, the tiny mewling noises…It’d been pitiful and filled with vulnerability, and Kazimir was ninety-nine percent certain he’d never heard anything as beautiful in his entire life. And he wanted to hear it again. Right the fuck now."
A sweet moment "He’d hesitated at the side of the bed this morning for a good five minutes before giving in and leaning over to plant a soft kiss against Kaz’s plush lips. The younger guy had come alive beneath him, nipping and kissing him back almost immediately."
"“Does your boyfriend really deserve this kind of loyalty?” Hernan asked, and since he’d know, Nate told the truth. “No,” he confirmed. “He really doesn’t. My boyfriend is an asshole.” “Then why not just give us his name? We’ll take care of him for you.” “I said he was an asshole,” he reiterated. “I didn’t say I wasn’t into that sort of thing.”"
*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Chani Lynn Feener did it again!!!! This book is the story of Nate (whom you might remember as Nuri's brother or Bay's friend) and one of the devils of Vitality, Kazimir (whom you might remember as the cousin of Kal). Their romance starts as Kaz trying to make point to his cousin and his friends, that he is indeed capable of caring for people and forming a meaningful relationship. Nate just happens to be the unfortunate soul who got on nerves of the devil once and couldn't escape his fate. Their first fake then very much relationship starts with Kaz basically forcing his want of relationship. First of all I really loved Nate. He was a very real character. He needed to take care of his little sister alone while trying not to disappoint his big brother. He was and is under the stress of not trying to burden and disappoint people. Nate is often in his head, overthinking, mostly trying to survive life on his own, not trying to be a burden to those who love him. Kaz is, well Kaz. He really was a funny character and it wasn't like he was supposed to be funny, he just is. Kazimir likes to take control and it is what Nate needs to not overthink things. And Nate is a way for Kaz to understand people. Honestly I think their relationship might have started in a weird way but surprisingly it ended up being kind of healthy, well as healthy as they can be. The constant communication and trying to understand the other wasn't something I expected from Kaz so I'm glad they ended up the way they are. I can't wait for Madden and Berga's book and honestly I wouldn't say no to a Kelrin novella. (Yes, I still can't get over them and I don't think I ever will.) I received a review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you for the free copy! :)
I enjoyed this dark romance between Kazimir and Nate. I always enjoy the push/pull dynamic within this series and Kazimir and Nate are another great addition to this collection of morally black characters falling hard and fast for their reluctant love interest.
Nate is what made this story work for me. He is such a complex character who suffers in silence, is endlessly selfless, and has an unrelenting moral compass. He instantly captures Kaz's attention at their first interaction. Their dramatic first interaction begins an intense series of events. Nate's reluctance to Kaz's attention and determination is a great balance to Kaz's off-kilter personality.
Overall Devil May Care is a darkly entertaining romance that I could not get enough of. I love this series and cannot wait for Flix's story next!!
*** I reviewed a complimentary copy of this story.***
Devil may care…or may not care. Hmmm. Recommended for most but not safe for me.
I LOVED the first four connected stories in this world. Echo, These Silent Stars, Call of the Sea, and His Dark Paradox (by the author under another pseudonym and with a co-author. Why? I have no idea, but, it’s connected directly with this book, so, read it first!). This book I…enjoyed a lot of, but didn’t enjoy certain elements. But I'll still recommend it.
Like the author’s other books, this one is a super-t0xic MM romance with non-con, dub-con, a twisted relationship complete with no-holds-barred manipulation and psychopathic tones. MIND THE TWs. They are no joke. But if you’re a fan of the darkest of dark romance, dive on in.
Given all the previous books I have read by this author, this book is an anomaly, in that it isn’t an OTP (One True Person), obsessive-possessive romance. I almost DNFed, but ultimately stuck with it. I struggled because I’d wrongfully come to believe this was a “safe for me” author (which is NOT the author’s fault, it was my own hope/mistake), and that made me sad, because now I can’t trust this author's work as I’d thought and need to dissect reviews before reading new books (though, MM book spoilers on FB is very helpful!). But that is a Me problem that won’t bother many. The relationship does have tones of obsession, but, it falls down up front on it and doesn’t start that way, and doesn’t fully read that way till much later in the book.
To get it out of the way, the Nope for me is a sex-with-others element that is present and happens after the two MCs have already gotten physical/had sex together. One MC is still sleeping with his F-buddy, because he hasn’t yet been intrigued enough by the other MC (that’s the difference between this and the previous books. The MC isn’t obsessed with the other hero; he builds up to it, and is still f-ing around meanwhile, which gave me a visceral Ick reaction. As noted, it’s a Me problem.). It put me off; however, the sex with the OM (other man) at least isn’t described on page; we see only the conversation they have in the aftermath when they're getting dressed (but eww), so, I got through it. And that doesn’t bother most readers, so, if it won’t bother you, don’t worry about it and read full steam ahead! Ultimately, the story still worked for me because, as it turned out, for once? that moment was not gratuitous; the author used it later to raise the stakes exponentially in a truly gut-wrenching and riveting way that built up the romantic conflict that included a strong payoff. Distasteful as it was for me, I appreciated that it went somewhere and wasn’t just thrown in for blah blah sex positivity, oh, look how forward thinking we are, as it so often is.
What I loved: The first confrontation. Sparks fly as Nate reacts to selfish, entitled Kazimir getting angry at him for losing a race that was in no way Nate’s fault. Kaz is out of line, but being the powerful Brumal (this world’s mafia) underboss who no one ever says no to, he has no clue just how out of line he is, and he’s shocked AF when Nate doesn’t bow and scrape and instead tells him off. Kaz isn’t used to that! And…he just can’t let it go. In his mind…Nate OWES him…oh boy. And Things go from there.
Then, there’s a tender and fascinating evolution in entitled jerk Kazimir as he stalks Nate, messes with him, and blows apart Nate’s world and then convinces him to be his pretend boyfriend (to show his friend that, yeah, he can get a boyfriend if he wants one!), and then falls for him without realizing what’s happening. It’s kind of hilarious and adorable, watching this cold-hearted, entitled asshole develop actual Feelings. He evolves from selfish and uncaring indifference, to piqued interest due to Nate’s unexpected spirited reactions to him, to selfish (hey, that’s his character!) involvement, to going all out to claim Nate but also to give Nate anything Nate wants. It felt authentic and intriguing. His oblivious bull-in-a-china-shop destruction of Nate’s carefully curated life is almost cute, even as it showcases just how oblivious the privileged all too often are to the concerns of the less fortunate. Kaz starts out using Nate, and then ultimately realizes he wants Nate for all Nate is. I truly believed he fell for Nate and would (ultimately) treat him well/worship him, even as he will certainly drive Nate completely nuts for the rest of their long life together.
I also loved Nate’s evolution. From never having been with a man to becoming the target of this alpha predator’s fixation, Nate rolls with the punches and never loses himself or his sense of independence. What Nate struggles with is self-worth and not wanting to be a burden to anyone, especially not the family who love him (older brother Nuri, hero of His Dark Paradox, and younger sister Neve, who lives nearby). Which makes him a great puzzle for Kaz, a man who’s never questioned his right to exist and to take anything he ever wanted. It’s a case of uber-entitlement clashing with a kind of self-erasure, which is fascinating.
What I didn’t love: the sex with the F-buddy. Though I did love how it came into play later, the motivation for the f-buddy to mess with Nate wasn’t clear, and wasn’t resolved, and it also wasn’t clear how the f-buddy even set up his evil confrontation with Nate. Then, I never felt satisfied that Kaz really showed Nate just how different being with Nate is for him, how much more important Nate became. Possibly because the f-buddy thing went on for years, so clearly there was an attachment of sorts and a relationship on both parts, and Kaz and Nate had only a matter of a couple months together—there wasn’t enough balance to make me truly believe Kaz’s attachment to Nate was special. We also don’t get to see exactly what Kaz wrote about Nate in his mysterious journal, to compare to what Nate read that Kaz had written about the f-buddy, so…? I don’t know, it wasn’t fleshed out enough to satisfy. I wanted more grovel, more…reassurance on Nate’s behalf.
The plot thread that brings direct danger to Nate is also frustratingly nebulous. Likely because the details will be revealed in a future book, but, in this one, we just don’t learn enough about it for it to be satisfyingly resolved. I was also waiting for the moment that Kaz would finally realize Nate’s brother is married to a super powerful man who also has Nate’s back (though Nate would die before he asked for help), to show him Nate has options. While Kaz and Silver do meet, there’s posturing but no real confrontation, which felt like a missed opportunity. I would have liked to see Kaz have to truly chase Nate down and show Nate he's so worth the trouble. Oh well.
Anyway, I could say a lot more, but I just wrote a mini-novel.
HEA. Enemies to lovers. Fake boyfriends. OM drama/s3x with others, aka emotional cheating (in my definition of it). But used well, so, worked in context, much as I hated it. No others or cheating once they knowingly engage in the relationship. Recommended.
I'm torn - there was rape and definitely Stockholm syndrome. But in the end, both characters were happy. I'm just going to take that at face value, lol
Definitely read the TWs before starting this. This book is not for the faint of heart.
It follows the same vein as the other books in the series. Kaz is a devil and he definitely shows it in this book. Ngl it’s very hot. Nate doesn’t stand a chance. Are there too many characters in this book? Yes, and most could have been posted down since most were unnecessary. Ugh. I had to skim some parts of internal dialogue because it became way too repetitive. Some good editing would have made this book better.
Kaz and Nate worked out their differences and it was a hot struggle to get there. Not too much angst surprisingly. The Zane part was a bit much and I know he’s getting a book but what an asshole! 🤣🤣
Re-read: Yes, I know I've now read this book twice in one year, but I honestly cannot help myself. With this read I think I love the couple even more. Not my faves still, but the character development here or at least the characters coming to understand themselves and try to change for their partner's sake is so damn good. Having now read Flix's book, the clues thrown in here were awesome. Helps connect the stories and timeline. Am I going to dive into Flix's book asap? Yes, just after I finish writing this review 😆😆 ---------------------- My brain is a little foggy because I'm sick, so this isn't going to be a well thought out review -- I do apologize, but I'll write something better when I re-read this. Because, yeah I totally plan on re-reading this book. It was so, so good. The dynamic between the main couple felt different from the others we've seen so far. Kaz is a selfish asshole and Nate is a people-pleaser, which would make you think Nate would continuously give in to Kaz BUT Nate also knows his self-worth and acts towards people how they act towards him while Kaz takes care of this possessions, sooooo it really felt balanced. We see character growth too and not only an understanding of each other, but of themselves. It was oddly precious to read.
We can also see some of the other story lines maybe being set up: > Flix is on vacation???? and was there tension there re: the Shepard gang? (NGL I totally need more Flix in my life-- AND Berga!) > Who are the Ancients and will we get a story about Port? > What really is going on with Zane and Lyra? (Also so much more Zane time I'm 👀👀👀 so curious)
We also hear some about the characters from past books -- just a little, but it was nice. And we can see connections between side characters too like Annya who is Arlet's sister (also hello again Arlet!). I'm so, so hyped for the next book! I can't wait to see who she writes about next.
And I want to say again that the author does a great job explaining the content warnings at the beginning of the book and I really appreciate knowing what I'm diving into.
I just finished reading, and I want to say that I am completely in love with them and the book, with the universe, with absolutely everything!!
Kazimir is one of my favorites, and I adore how you managed to outline his character. All the adorable and cute moments with him and Nate just made me melt! The part with the plush dragon is one of my favorites 😭
Kaz on his knees for Nate, Kaz taking care of Nate’s eating, Kaz being jealous of everything, oh my, there are no words to express how much I adore him! Don’t even get me started on Nate... my heart broke for him, but his evolution throughout the book and the fact that Kaz helped him made me so happy! All I wanted was to see him finally happy, and oh, how I rejoiced! Their relationship is perfect, Kaz is perfect, Nate is perfect, THE WHOLE BOOK IS PERFECT!

I think I'm ready to walk away. Too many things are repetitive and the "I fall in love" arc is always very short and implausible. Even though the author says that she doesn't want to romanticise anything and writes at the beginning that these relationships are toxic and nobody deserves that in real life, she is too lax with the thoughts and actions of her characters. (At least by my standards.)
Dark, deviant, deliciously sexy? Yep, it’s another Chani Lynn Feener book and ooooh boy, ‘Devil May Care’ was another amazing read, set in the same sci-fi world as ‘Echo’, ‘These Silent Stars’ and ‘Call of the Sea’ - the wealthy planet of Vitality.
‘Devil of Vitality’ Kazimir Ambrose, cousin of the mafia boss Baikal Void, is the newly promoted underboss of the Brumal mafia. He is well known for psychopathic tendencies; a lack of empathy, short temper and inability to form long lasting relationships. When he bets on one of the illegal hoverbike races that take place on the docks, he is furious to find out the rider is not who he thought - instead of the legendary Pandaveer, he has bet on mid-tier racer Nate Narek. Angry at losing the bet, Kaz corners pretty boy Nate, determined to make the beautiful racer pay for his loss.
Nate is a mechanic at a small shop, struggling to make his bill payments and filled with anxiety and depression after a traumatic childhood. When he is cornered by the terrifying Kaz, Nate hopes that the Devil will get bored quickly and leave him alone… unfortunately, Kaz has decided that he wants to try having a relationship, and he’s determined to have one with Nate… whether Nate wants it or not. And the more time Nate spends with Kaz, the more he starts questioning what it is he really wants after all…
This book was dark and you absolutely need to read the trigger warnings before going in. Kaz is literally a whole plethora of red flags, possessive, psychotic and not above manipulating Nate to get what he wants. But, if you are into dark romance (which I 100% am) you are gonna love this! It is hot, sexy and Kaz has a whole bondage kink which he and Nate explore 😏
This book is available tomorrow - 14th Feb 2024! Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC of this book. All opinions are my own!
I enjoyed this one. It had a slightly different vibe to previous books, but that's what made it good.
Kaz was fascinating. He was an asshole, sure, but his progress throughout was interesting to read. He visibly grew throughout this story, and I was living for it.
Nate, I can't say I ever expected to be so whiny, though. I don't know why, but this made the book a little less fun. He was so down on himself constantly, even when it didn't make sense to be. In a previous book, I'd really loved him, and I did start loving him again as he gained a bit of confidence, but for the first half of the book, he was a bit insufferable.
This did lean a bit more character central than plot central, which is probably where I lost a bit of interest, though. I'm used to these having a big twist, and this one just didn't, though I did enjoy the cute banter at the end with his brother and his brother-in-law.
Overall, I did enjoy this, and I would recommend people read it, but not if you're looking for a plot heavy story.
4.5⭐️ Something that starts so dark ends in something so light. That ending is just perfect for me! Borrowed this on KU the minute it came out! I love that the other characters from the previous books are there especially Nuri and Silver from His Dark Paradox(Chani writing as Avery Tu). Same universe as her other books. Makes me want to read that one again, now i’m craving for her next book!😍
I’ve been deep in dark romances lately , manipulation, blurred consent, power games, MCs doing objectively questionable things. What I did NOT expect was how many soft, melt-your-brain moments were tucked in between all the chaos n this one.
Nate, first of all. This man fights Kaz every step of the way he refuses, resists, snaps back but the second Kaz is genuinely upset? Nate folds. Touches his face. Softens. Gives in just a little. And those moments are so sweet .It’s like the light poking through the cracks, and I loved that.
And Kaz… Kaz is Kaz. A menace. A throat-slitting, no-nonsense mafia man who should not be letting anyone talk back to him except Nate does. Constantly. And Kaz just… lets him. Which is WILD. Nate is a people-pleaser with everyone else, but with people he loves? Oh, he’s sarcastic. Mouthy. Sharp. That side of him only belonged to his brother and sister before, and now Kaz gets it all the time And somehow, Kazimir ,of all people ,allows it.
The funniest part to me is that this whole thing started as a flex. Like okay, Baikal has Rabbit, so Kaz decides he’ll get himself a boyfriend too, just to prove he can. Except… he never even goes to rub it in anyone’s face. Because the second he gets a taste of Nate, it stops being about competition and becomes very much about I want him and I don’t know how to function without him.
Yes, the six-hour conditioning sex scene is disturbing. It’s manipulation at its peak. No defending that. BUT ..and here’s where I started grinning like an idiot Kaz conditioned himself just as badly. Because the next morning, when Nate leaves without saying goodbye, Kaz is actually upset. Not angry. Hurt. And he straight-up tells him, “You don’t get to leave without waking me up.” Sir?? Excuse me?? That’s feelings.
And Nate listens. Next time he WAKES him with a soft kiss. Which obviously turns into a hot goodbye, but still , the intention mattered.
Kaz he falls hard and fast and forgives Nate for everything. Arguments? Fine. Disrespect? Whatever. Even at the end, when logic says Kaz should snap and let his demons take over he doesn’t. He just wants Nate back. That’s it.
The moment that sealed it for me? Kaz dropping to his knees in front of Baikal. This man, who has never loved or cared, begging. No pride. No ego. Just panic. Nothing matters but getting Nate to safety and he’ll beg to get all the help he can to save his pretty boy.Everyone around him is in shock, and honestly? Same. Because that’s when it becomes clear this stopped being about proving anything a long time ago.
Was I annoyed by Zane? Absolutely. Did he piss me off trying to wedge himself between them? YES. Will I still read his book? Unfortunately, yes. I trust the process.
Bottom line: I was hooked from start to finish. I never lost my connection to them. I rooted for both of them equally, which almost never happens for me. They’re messy, morally questionable, emotionally unhinged and somehow perfect together.
This may have been one of my most anticipated books this year. Chani Lynn Feener has become one of my favorite authors and once I start a book she’s written I cannot put it down. Devil May Care is book 4 in the Devils of Vitality series. Every book has kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how these psychopaths have such a hold on me.
Kazimir Ambrose is Baikal Void’s underboss. He has tested positive for narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and dark empathy. I found that an interesting combination of traits and it made Kaz definitely one of a kind. He only cared about himself and how he could manipulate people to do what he wanted. He is cruel, heartless, and vicious.
Nate has been a side character in many of the other books. He is a graduate of Vail University, mechanic, and race organizer. It’s because of the latter that he comes into contact with members of the Retinue and the Satellite. Nate is depressed and feels like he is a burden to those he cares about. Kaz realizes that he can use this information to his advantage.
Kaz is bitter that everyone in the Satellite thinks that he is incapable of forming a relationship with anyone (romantic or not). He decides to use Nate to prove everyone wrong. Except Nate is not amenable to being a pawn in Kaz’s game. The back and forth between these two is delicious. I love how Nate would often confuse Kaz who thought he was a master manipulator and reader of people.
Kaz doesn’t understand why he can’t forget Nate. The back and forth continues until Kaz finally figures out a way to make Nate do what he wants. I loved when Kaz realized that he wanted something real with Nate. Making him his Onus? Loved it. The ending was terrific and felt right for these two.
I think the conflict between Kaz, Zane, and Nate was important though I found Zane’s reasons strange. What is going on with Zane and Lyla? I have way more questions than answers with these two. There were so many other characters introduced here that make me want the next book as soon as possible. Pious Prince is SO intriguing and I cannot wait to read that story. Who is he searching for and what does he mean that they are ‘everything’?
Chani Lynn Feener’s world is so real and fascinating. Each book just gets better and better as the stories come together. I know that I will be anxiously waiting for book 5.

I had to knock an entire star for that pointless third act breakup drama.
Nate was ridiculous. People have ex’s. Getting upset over the fact was extremely immature. No one cheated on anybody.
Yes, it’s awkward finding a naked ex in your mafia psycho “boyfriend’s” house, but that should’ve been a conversation to be had about boundaries and exclusivity.
When Nate’s face falls reading the journal, I was expecting to find out that Kaz killed his parents or was murdering babies or something. Definitely not that he found his booty call sexy in the past. It was ridiculous. I almost DNF’d at this point.
I mean… you are okay with your boyfriend raping and coercing his booty call, but you draw the line at finding him hot??? 🤨

I overall enjoyed the journey, but wish I read His Dark Paradox first to fully appreciate Nate and the cameos more. Definitely loved the developments here with Kaz and Nate though and the buildup was fun! Full RTC.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Devil May Care by Chani Lynn Feener
Kaz makes me laugh sometimes with the funny stuff he says. He's so domineering, but he's also hot af. I like how possessive he is. I like how he isn't selfish when it really counts. Nate is actually kind of sweet. I like how much he loves and cares for his family.
I feel like this is a hurt/comfort story even though it's dark, and I love that. This book is so well written. It kept me up all night. I would pick this book just off of the cover alone. It's gorgeous!
I love that this is the kind of series where you get to check in on previous characters that you already fell in love with, like Kal and Rabbit and Nuri with Silver.
I didn't want this book to end. But I can't wait for the next one. Nate and Kazimir just make me so happy!
2⭐ “My mom left and my dad never listens to me. I like closure,so to speak. Knowing when you’re coming and going? Knowing that you’re taking the time to inform me and—” “Let you know I’ll be coming back?”
I have been so excited to get Nate's story since we met him in His Dark Paradox and once again, Chani does not disappoint!
I absolutely love all of Chani's characters, lets be real, but there was just something about Kazimir that I just absolutely loved. I loved his jealous moments, his "competitiveness" with his cousin (HILARIOUS), but can take a moment to also talk about how super sweet he is? HE FILLED HIS FRIDGE UP. He saw past the exterior that Nate showed to everyone else and took the initiative to help him at least be able to eat. Also how he dropped to his knees? OOF. I mean, you could fill a stadium with all the red flags this Kazimir was waving but I WAS HERE FOR IT.
Nate. The way my heart just absolutely broke for him and how much he went through the ringer through this book. How he was trying to keep up appearances for his family, struggling with his job and being harassed, and that's not even going near all of his mental health issues. He's depressed, anxious, and constantly feels like he's a burden to everyone, and I mean EVERYONE. His showers just... Ugh. Those just hurt to read about.
If you're down for some: Massive hurt/comfort Mafia Romance Obsessed/Possessive MC Jealousy galore Dub-con/Non-Con
Then this book is for you!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
