Lady Marianne Ayles has always been acutely conscious of her stepbrother, Julian Montgomery, the dashing and mysterious Viscount Hardwick. When her stepfather, the Marquess, expresses concern over Julian’s prolonged withdrawal from social events and increasing reclusiveness, he implores Marianne to intervene.
Aware of Julian's steadfast resolve to avoid love, Marianne boldly suggests a risqué wager with stakes that are both daring, scandalous, and likely to lead to irrevocable heartbreak.
Alyssa Clarke writes steamy Regency Historical Romances featuring swoon-worthy heroes and sassy, sometimes unconventional heroines! Her debut novel, Love Me, If You Dare, came to her in a dream as a hot, fun enemy to lover romance where she played the leading lady who fell in love with a duke who looked remarkably like Henry Cavill.
When not writing, Alyssa enjoys hiking, games/movie night, with her husband and two beautiful children, and her Siberian Husky, Cronus. She is a lover of wine, cheesecake, and more wine.
Ok I’m gonna be a bit nit picky on this one. I’m all for taboo romances when people can acknowledge it is fiction. This one isn’t TABOO more like not common. My biggest issue was them constantly thinking/ saying brother and sister and having that familiarity. They didn’t know each other when they were minors which helped but it did feel slightly off in my opinion. Also one of the hero’s main reasons for being aloof doesn’t do anything that other plot points already do. I didn’t feel a companionship or tie to 48 Berkeley as the other books in the series have. I did like the hero and heroine and think a forbidden romance between them would be interesting, but the step siblings aspect didn’t add anything that I would’ve missed if it wasn’t there. Also in my brief googling step siblings were not permitted to marry in the regency period.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of this series and think of this is your thing than great! This was just not for me and for being a risky romance their was little sexual tension which didn’t help I guess.
I have read over 20 books by Alyssa Clarke. I just started her in April, 2021 and she quickly became a favorite. I love her stories and she writes such good sex scenes. The only thing I hate is all her release dates get pushed. I always look forward for her new books to come out but they never come out the day they are supposed to. :( But once I get one, I can't put them down. That goes for this one as well. So damn good, I read it in a few hours.
OMG, I loved this couple. So much tension. Yowza!!! Marianne and Julian were so hot. I loved this story and their chemistry was crazy good! Definitely recommend the whole series.
Lady Marianne Ayles has always been conscious of her stepbrother, Julian Montgomery, the dashing and mysterious Viscount Hardwick & more than half in love with him. When her stepfather, the Marquis, expresses concern over Julian’s prolonged withdrawal from social events and increasing reclusiveness, he implores Marianne to intervene. He also tasks Julien with helping Marianne find a husband. A quick but lovely romance, the pages flew by. I loved both Julian & Marianne, he’s locked his heart away after his fiancée died after a short illness but he would do anything for his step sister Marianne – his poppet. Marianne wants to marry for love & as she loves Julian she’s not looking elsewhere but how to get him to see her as a desirable woman rather than his sister? I loved their journey to a HEA which wasn’t easy but as with all the ladies of 48 Berkeley Square there’s always a dare. But who will win? A well written delightful romance which I devoured in a sitting My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This is the first book in this series that I could not enjoy. I DNF'd at 60%. I was not a fan of the stepsiblings romance - too "Clueless" for me. And while I have enjoyed how this author has changed the male main characters over this series, I've found the female main characters to be less developed and more cookie cutter. This one was not for me. 1 star
Alyssa Clarke once more gets 5 STARS for Book 15 for her well written & highly popular Series: Wagers and Wallflowers. Of course a BLURB is provided that tells you what you need to know about the plot of this book. Great characters & some of the women at the clubhouse are from earlier books in the series.
This read is unique in the fact that Marianne's Mother who was a widow married a Marquess, who was a widower, with a son a Viscount, Julian who was well known to avoid Ton entertainments. At the first meeting Marianne & Julian dances a waltz that she finds herself falling in love at first sight. However, at the end of the dance both of them are informed their parents are getting married & they are now going to be sister & brother. That put a quick brake on her feelings for him; besides learning Julian had been engaged earlier in life and his fiance died when he was twenty. Since then he simply avoided balls, parties, & getting involved with marriage minded young ladies.
This is a poignant story of romance & love between Marriane & Julian.
Marianne has had eyes for her step brother Julian for a while yet he is blind to it. When her step father proposes that she help get Julian back into society once more, she comes up with a dare. Using herself as bait, she will help get him back into society if he will help her learn how to seek a husband. But all too soon the dare goes too far. This is a book you need to read and not think about the fact that these two are really close stepbrother/sister. They regard each other as sister and brother but it does get awkward when they hook up and he realizes she's a woman now and not his little sister. The romance is good, it starts off with a bang and grows from there with some very steamy scenes. There is some anticlimactic drama near the end which could have been better and given some time, but sadly it is raced through and you loose the whole point. This book was better than the last in terms of story development but still felt hurried with choppy scenes, especially near the end. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a wonderful surprise to read a forbidden romance. Julian and Marianne met at a ballroom. She is fascinated by the elusive Viscount that asked her for a dance without being properly introduced. He is the mysterious rake that all women whisper about. They feel a special connection while in each other's company until their parents announce their engagement. I loved Julian and Marianne's personality. The way they are when they are together. The way they long for each other's presence. This story is very romantic and sweet, at the same time has a note of nostalgia in it. Another wonderful Alyssa Clarke story.
Shortly after her first Season, Marianne’s mother married Julian’s father the Marquess of Sandover. Julian’s reputation for being aloof and having an icy heart stemmed from his grief over the loss of his fiance several years ago. As step-siblings, Marianne and Julian developed a close relationship, with him being supportive and very protective of her. Now, it’s five years after their parents married and Marianne is being pressured to follow suit. The only problem….she’s in love with Julian. This is an entertaining story filled with everything from heartache to hilarity. Add a haunted house, a couple of dares, a trouser wearing woman riding astride and learning to fence, a few thugs, and a whole lot of steam, and you have a story that will grab your heart and attention and not let go. The characters are delightful. Julian’s denial and lack of self-awareness is most endearing, Marianne’s revelation and seduction skills are enlightening and the Marquess’ manipulation is masterful. Loved it!.

Lady Marianne Ayles has been very aware of her step brother Julian Montgomery, Viscount Hardwick, for some time now. His father, the Marquess, had married Marianne’s widowed mother. When Marianne had no one to dance with at a ball, Julian waltzed with her. When his fiancée died of an illness, Julian lost interest in society’s activities and preferred to keep to himself. His father, who is experiencing health issues, asked Marianne to try to get Julian to re-join society to get through his long-lasting grieving. Neither of them realized how the other actually felt about them, aside from being good friends, so Marianne’s plan is very likely to have unexpected results. What will the future bring to them? Will they find happiness and love together? Or will the step-sibling situation keep them apart? (Note that they were not children growing up together, so the “ick” factor is not a strong deterrent here.)
It feels like everyone is playing a little game without full disclosure. Will it take them where they want to be? Grab your copy and see how it all resolves.
Marianne lives with her widowed mother and is having a season in order to find a spouse. She witnesses her mother in an embrace with a man in the garden while at a ball. As she is trying to follow her mother, an unknown man walks up to her and prevents her from doing so. She shares a dance with this man and later in the night she discovers he is the son of the man she saw with her mother. Her mother and the gentleman announces their engagement to be married. Marianne know is to be stepsister to Julian who is the first man she has ever felt an attraction to. Fast forward about 5 years, neither Marianne or Julian are married but over the years they have grown close to each other. Now her stepfather unbeknownst to Marianne is having health issues and he plays them against each other to allow them to see that they belong together. This story has less humor than the last, but it is equally entertaining. Marianne, a new member to the 48 Berkeley Square society, is troubled by her attraction to Julian, her stepbrother - her widowed mother married Julian’s father. They met each other at a ball where his father proposed marriage. Then, 18 y/o Marianne was forlorn because her dance card was empty, but Julian asked her to waltz. He was grieving the loss of his fiancée to illness for the past 2 years. 5 years later, they are both unattached and secretly harbor feelings for one another. ( He lives in his own townhouse. ) Read how they manage to unite after a haunting house dare, a masquerade ball, and his father’s poor health. Both MC’s are delightful as are their parents. This is a very enjoyable HEA romance. I have received an ARC via Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
Julian and Marianne meet just before their parents marry, and become great friends. Julian assists and protects her in her 48 Berkeley Square activities, and I think he has as much fun as she does. Marianne is in love with Julian and wagers she can win his love. Julian has feelings for her, but he refuses to acknowledge anything but because he sports a broken heart, he offers only friendship. This is another entertaining story in the Wagers & Wallflowers series. Marianne is a bright, loving, happy young woman, and I love the way she brings Julian out of his shell. Julian’s father wants to see them both happy, and isn’t opposed to giving them a nudge. A story with emotion, surprises, romance and a happy ending. Loving reading this wonderful new addition to such a great series. Marianne has loved her stepbrother from afar from the moment they first met. Julian is so very aware of Marianne and strives to distance himself from her to stave off at future pain. He lost his beloved betrothed to a short illness, he won't risk his heart once more no matter how much he yearns for her. Their father decides to test fate and their resolves by declaring each must spend the season together Julian as escort to Marianne. Marianne seizes the opportunity to make a dare three weeks of her sole company and he must do nothing to resist her. Can Julian's resolve and will withstand the sensual onslaught she is about to unleash, will he finally open up his heart to her.
Another delightful story about one of those unconventional ladies belonging to the Club at 48 Berkeley Square. These bold, adventurous ladies aren’t afraid to make a dare or take one themselves. Marianne is just such a lady. She had been 1/2 in love with Julian, Viscount Hardwick, for five years , since his father went and married her mother, placing her in the “sister” zone. They had a great friendship but she felt a lot more than sisterly toward him. That’s when she decides on the wager to try and get him to fall in love with her. He had firmly decided he would never fall in love again, after painfully losing his first love. But this is a wager that Marianne is not about to lose. Such a charming romance with lots of sizzling passion!
We have Marianne a lovely smart, brave lady considered to be on the shelf and a bit of a wallflower. She met her dream man during her comeout only to discover he's to be her step brother by marriage.
Then you have Julian, a man broken by the loss of his first love, living half a life and afraid to love.
A scheming step dad / dad brings the 2 of them together where the MMCs feelings start to grow beyond friendship and he starts acknowledging the MMFs feelings.
One star off for a clueless mother.

I enjoy Alyssa Clarke's writing and there have been several novels in this Wagers and Wallflowers series I've really enjoyed! However, this one didn't hit right with me. I felt like the writing was very disjointed this time and the way the story moved from start to finish felt like two different books. The author wants to convey to readers that the two main characters, Marianne and Julian, had this amazing connection but I didn't feel that. It was just very awkward for me.
Plus there was this whole "taboo" element of them being step siblings. Her mom married his dad. I will say that in my opinion it wasn't really THAT taboo. They didn't grow up together and were older when their parents decided to marry. At times they referred to each other as bro and sis, but that happened before they started to really show different feelings for each other. I think if the author had showed them growing up together and had made the sibling aspect more prominent in the romantic parts, THEN I could see it being taboo. And the ick factor would have been strong and I would have DNF'd. But I didn't get that sense. I think the author just put that out there to draw in readers into that spice.
My biggest gripe, though, and maybe what I missed the most was the fact that we didn't have a lot of reference back to the ladies of the Wallflowers and Wagers club. Like...that found family element that I've come to love with this series was really missing. That's what makes this historical romance series really shine and stick out to me as a reader.
I hate to say it, but I think this was my least favorite so far in the series. There are some really strong 4 star books in this series and some that I feel the author rushed to put out.
I'm hopeful the next novel in this series regains some of the earlier magic!
Tropes: Forbidden Love, Step-siblings Taboo, Friends to Lovers
Oooooh y’all!! I smiled so much reading Marianne and Julian’s HEA. Such a delicious forbidden love story between stepsiblings. I wanted to see how their story was going to progress that I started reading and couldn’t put it down until “the end”. I love their friendship… I love that they had each other’s backs, that they were willing to do anything for each other’s happiness. They were already courting and they just didn’t know it.
Oh this book was so freaken fantastic and the reason why I will drop everything to read an Alyssa Clarke book!! She’s simply the best!!
I just love all these books by Alyssa Clarke. This book is about Marianne and Julian who are Stepbrother and Stepsister. Julian always had a special place for Marianne and would help her do anything she needed. Marianne had a tender for Julian from the moment she met him. I was not sure I was going to like the Stepbrother/Stepsister romance, but I really liked this book and their story. I liked how Marianne knew what she wanted and went for it. I received an ARC of this book from Booksprout and I am leaving my honest opinion.
Yes, it's true they're not blood related as step-siblings; but seriously? When their parents married, they were family. This would never be allowed or encouraged or even tolerated. The familial thing was not romantic, nor the seduction sexy. It was ick. 100%. What the bloody hell are these other reviewers thinking?! Are they all stupid & so desperate for romance that even slightly incestuous familial sex is ok? WTF? Just hard NO. Rest of series is splendid & well crafted 4 or 5 stars each. This one is awful. Bleh!
Since the moment they met five years ago, Marianne and Julian has had a connection but once they became step siblings they became friends instead. With the pressure to marry growing, Marianne finally confesses her feelings to Julian but his past holds him back. It is another sweet story of second chances for love. Great series.

As always another delightful read from this fabulous author. Marianne and Julian's chemistry was palpable and I enjoyed how their romance was built on such a strong friendship. There was no unnecessary angst just two people working it out. The steam was just right. Here's to the ladies of number 48 Berkeley Square.

The relationship between Julian and Marianne was so special. It was clear that they had chemistry when they first met, and that chemistry grew into a wonderful friendship that was really filled with forbidden love. I liked how she eventually told him how she felt and what she planned to do to win him over. Luckily, after a scare, it all ended with a happily ever after.
Never Wager With a Scoundrel is another entertaining addition to the Wagers and Wallflowers series. The novella-length sweet and clean romance had me feeling quite sorry for these two meant-to-be lovers in the beginning, when circumstances seemed to keep them apart. Their HEA left me with a smile on my face.

Madame Alyssa Clarke as usual has penned a swoony book with wager as the main theme . She has I feel dared me to read the book and I enjoyed it till the last. In the beginning I thought she would lose the hero when he became her stepbrother and I thought it was a lost case but she dared to bravely instil in him love for her and vow she succeeded.Exciting story.

While I loved the way Julian and Marianne’s love was portrayed, I felt the constant referring to them as brother and sister was awkward. I didn’t understand this part as they were adults when their parents met and married, so it wasn’t as if they had grown up together as brother and sister. This part just didn’t fit the story, and I felt it could stand alone on just their own feelings.

This is book 15 of the Wager and Wallflowers series but can be read as a standalone. I have loved all the books. They are all fun and well written. This book is about Lady Marianne Ayles and Julian Montgomery. These two are step siblings but so much more. Can Jullian realize it is worth loving again and can Marianne show him the way? Fun and adventure along the way! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Marianne and Julian had been briefly mentioned in Evie's story and this was her turn. The house at 48 Berkley Square seemed fully aware of Marianne's interest in her step brother. Tired of waiting to see if her love was returned she set out with a determination to find out herself. It was a so serum story though I think there may have been rules against this in defence England. I truly liked the characters and story. Enjoy!
Another great addition to the series. This is one my favorites from the series. I like that the FMC was a strong character and she enemy after what she wanted. Perfect pacing in the book and like both main characters. Really enjoyed can’t wait for next book.
