What is your greatest fear? For Aislin, it is the fear of being alone. She grew up in and out of foster care along with her brother, Declan. When he is killed by an IED blast while serving in Afghanistan, she leans on her brother's best friend, Gabriel. The two become inseparable.
When she catches her fiancée in bed with another girl? She isn’t even that upset. Mad as hell? Yes. As angry as she should be? No. That's the moment she realizes that she isn't in love with her fiancée. She is in love with her best friend, Gabriel. The only problem is that Gabe doesn't think he should cross the boundary between friend and lover with his dead best friend's sister. He wants her. He just doesn't want to want her. And, therein lies the problem. After Aislin is attacked by a man she tried to love with her head in an attempt to heal her heart from rejection, she and Gabriel have one night of bliss together. Only one though. Gabriel gets spooked and runs. He is afraid. Afraid that Aislin will hate him for taking advantage of her vulnerability. Three years and nine months later, Gabe comes home to find Aislin with a dark-haired wanna-be rock star and a three year old little girl with familiar blue eyes. Seeing her with Jude, makes his blood boil. But does Gabriel deserve her? No. Does he want her? With every fiber of his being. He will do anything it takes to win her heart. He wants a place in her life and in the life of her daughter. What is in the cards for Gabriel and Aislin? Can love survive without trust? Welcome to Devil Creek.
RONE Award-winning author Casey Bond lives on a rural farm in West Virginia with her husband and their two beautiful daughters. She writes phoenixes – gloriously flawed and morally gray characters that fiercely rise from the ashes of their circumstances.
Worldbuilding is one of her favorite pastimes. She thinks thunderstorms are better than coffee and that watching a meteor shower is the closest thing to magic you might ever see. She’s a firm believer that every amazing book needs a world you want to wrap yourself in, a character you want to win, and a love you would fight for.
Casey is the author of When Wishes Bleed, Gravebriar, House of Eclipses, and Where Oceans Burn.
Just can't do it. So many, many issues. I'll just bullet point them. 1. Present tense writing. But which also included past and future tense. 2. Slut shaming. Like a lot. And in the first 20 pages. 3. Unlikable characters 4. Abusive relationship 5. But mostly just comes down to poor writing. Odd descriptions, confusing/misleading word choices, weird sentence structures, etc.
I was actually really looking forward to reading this book, and I was perhaps a little bit disappointed. The story idea is fantastic, and I really loved how many little twists and turns the author attempted to take. Unfortunately it felt like so much time was spent building the background, that the ending was basically a forgone conclusion and just happened with not much really leading up to it. I absolutely loved both Aislin and Gabe, they were fantastic characters, both were super strong and loyal and just fun. I was really taken by Aislin, she didn't let ANYTHING keep her down regardless of how big the blow was. She experiences so much heartache and pain and she always just picks up the pieces and moves forward. Gabe was a sweet character, I actually loved how hard he fought what he felt for Aislin out of respect to his deceased best friend. Until the end of the book the relationship between Gabe and Aislin was perfect, nothing was forced and it just was happening. But the ending just ruined it a little bit for me. Everything happens and then all of a sudden its almost 4 years later and then the ending happens in like just a few chapters. I just felt a little cheated, like what happened in those 4 years? I just wish there was a bit more you know? Overall this was a cute story to read, and I totally would recommend that you check it out just be prepared for a bit of a rush ending.
Shady Bay is a sweet enduring romance. You can feel your heart strings being pulled, and you fall in love with the characters of Jaxon and Mercy.
Jaxon runs the local bar in Shady Bay. He moved there for a fresh start after a bad relationship. He swears off love not wanting to have his heart crushed again. Mercy has not had an easy life. Her dad is in prison, her mother is a junkie, and after one night in her home, Mercy no longer feels safe there anymore. She leaves her home in search of a better, safer place to live. She ends up in Shady Bay.
Jaxon and Mercy meet under unusual circumstances and begin a friendship. Mercy helps a local woman Celeste run her shop and gets help setting up her own place of her own. Then as Mercy begins her life and is finally starting to be happy, life throws her for a loop health wise. But Jaxon in his ever increasing feelings for Mercy steps up and helps her out, finally realizing what he has in front of him, his increasing love for her. With the help of her friends, Mercy is able to get through her health crisis, with her realizing just how much Jaxon means to her.
It is a simple love story. There are no sex scenes in this book, but I felt with the message conveyed in the book, it worked perfect without them. You were still able to feel the emotions and how deep Jaxon and Mercy’s feeling ran toward each other. The secondary characters in this book were great too, really stepping up and being there for both Jaxon and Mercy. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down once I started. For me it was a quick read, only taking a few hours, but I definitely recommend this to anyone in the mood for a sweet simple romance with a profound meaning behind it. I give this 5 stars and definitely will be reading more of Casey L. Bond. She is now on my radar :)
3.25 stars. I felt like the synopsis is very misleading. First, it seems that she had more feelings for Tyler then it was made seemed. She wasn't as mad as they synopsis said she was. Secondly, Thirdly, the ending was rushed as I predicted. I know it's a short book but the author could have cut out a lot in the beginning and middle, and could have had more drama at the end. The writing style was a little weird for me and it confused me at some parts. I did like this story but I just felt like it could have been a lot better. So much could have been done but now it just feels like I just read a book with a lot of missed opportunities.
I'm hooked in this book and I LOVE IT!! I like that Ms. Casey includes both viewpoints of Mac and Gabe, it helps me to deeply understand both of them and connects me to them. I felt their anger, frustration, happiness, and a lot more. I got emotional to some scenes. And sometimes I want to smack Gabe and Mac in the head for being an idiot, but I still love both of them... :>
I noticed that it needs some editing and I would really like to know when an event happened in the story(if it is day, noon, night or is it Saturday or Sunday ,etc.),like was it noon that both Gabe(he still has bandages) and Mac goes to Amy and Parker to swim in the pool. But in spite of all this I still love the book, it is not that bad that I couldn't read it.And I think Ms. Casey can prolong/add chapters to this book, the ending is a bit rush. But the story is really good so it outshadows some mistakes and it does not affects the story.
I recommend this book!! This is a great book and you would enjoy it.. :D
Omg Casey! I am absolutely in love with this book! I felt so bad for Aislin, she has a scrappy past and her fiancee cheats on her! What a freaking douche! But of course you have HOT SCORCHING Gabe! Best friend to Aislin "Mac" brother Declan, Mac lost Declan to war. Have is there to protect her.. well he's supposed to anyways.. lol but Gabe doesn't see her as a little sister.. can he man up and take what he wants? This book had me up ,down, shoot it had me all around!! I mean one minute I was like heck ya! The next minute I was like oh hell nah! Yup Casey you had my husband thinkin I was Looney! I loved loved this book! It has everything you want and more!! With its OMG moments,HOT men, kick butt women,a sad past... I had a few teary moments in there.. this book was just AUHMAZIN! This book, the moment I got it, I opened it up and started reading it. It drew me in and I could not put it down. This by far, is one of the best books in which I have read. The plot, synopsis and story-line are nothing short of amazing. The walk-through of love blossoming from friendship and companionship and the phases of life in which we all go through were simply breath-taking. The imagery in this story was astounding as well. I loved the flow of it and how a lot of people could relate to this book. This was an amazing life-long romance novel and I absolutely loved it. Such a talented Author Casey L. Bond is. I strongly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. This is a great read and something I see myself reading again and again. If I could give this book a 200+ star rating I most definitely would.
free on amazon till 1/17 I liked it, I like romance with a bit of mystery. What I didn't like was trying to keep up with all the characters, Example: Jaxon...why? I couldn't remember if he was a friend a cousin or ?? I like love triangles I mean why not right?? but this was a love SQUARE! even her Gay friend Cameron wanted "tap that" hmmm. There's a lot going on here in Devils Creek! Bro fist to Casey L.Bond for choosing Antonella as a character name! that's my sisters name! however we call her Anto..:) .
I thought the premise of this book was really good, but overall ended up feeling a bit disappointed with it. It had the potential to do a lot more.
If you read the blurb/synopsis that's basically the whole story there. There was a huge amount of buildup, a lot of secondary characters and a great deal of detail on minor details like outfits people were wearing. I did initially like the main characters, Aislin or 'Mac' has completely horrendous taste in men, but she was a sparky and tough character and you did feel for her. Gabe was very sweet and I could initially understand his torn loyalty after promising her dead brother he would look after her. So, despite the fact it would have benefited from some additional editing (some problems with grammar and flow in particular) I was quite enjoying it. Then it slightly fell apart for me.
*NEXT PART MAY CONTINUE SPOILERS* After the huge build to them finally sleeping together, Gabe then disappears for four years. After the author emphasizing through the whole novel how sweet he was and how much he cared about and wanted to protect her then he disappeared without a word. Apparently he didn't tell anyone, including his parents where he was or whether he was even alive or not - was there a missing person report filed or something?? Not to mention that he left Aislin dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic attack that he was supposed to be taking care of her through, and although he knew she was inexperienced obviously didn't care about her enough to use protection or to bother with a cursory check to make sure she wasn't pregnant. Then when he does show up again, he gets hugely jealous over the possibility she might have moved on, gives her a rather weak apology about how he thought she might have regretted it, said he loves her and she instantly forgives him and introduces him to his daughter, who instantly accepts him. It was horribly rushed and quite frankly rather unbelievable. I was expecting the majority of the book to be him having to earn back her trust and love and forge a proper place in his daughter's life. Not a couple of pages wrap up and everything was instantly perfect.
Overall, the reviews and the premise promised more. Good potential but the ending was much too rushed and 'tidy' for me to find it believable.
*Anytime I rate a book with a half star, I round up to the next highest star for sites such as goodreads, amazon, b&n...
Add this book to a long line of books that I have read and kept waiting for the vamps or weres to show up in. I really need to get a hang on this whole "reading blurbs better" thing. Halfway through and nothing paranormal is happening I begin to come to terms that I have duped myself once again. But who can blame me...the cover and title alone scream paranormal, right? Right? Anyone?
I rated this book 4.5 stars mainly because some parts of the book seemed almost too convenient and the ending seemed to happen too easily for the characters. I enjoyed the story though. I liked how Gabe fought with himself and his feelings for Aislin. In his mind he thought by being with her was dishonoring his best friend and Aislin's brother. How? I have no idea. But guys can be a little slow when it comes to love.
I liked Aislin's character. She definitely doesn't take crap off guys that is for sure. Of course her past plays a huge role in that. So I was glad that she wasn't one of those girls that lay down and take what life hands them. She does have some fight in her and she listens to her heart. She has had quite the journey in her young life, but she seems to carry her head high and keep on keeping on.
Like I said earlier, there were parts that seemed too convenient. In some cases there were people that happened to be there at the most opportune time. When in reality I wouldn't necessarily have thought would happen. Also the ending seemed too quick and easy. I just would have thought that she would have made him work a little harder to come back into her life. Although that is just my preference right there. After all that they have been through, it would have been nice to see him squirm a bit. (Who is 'he' you might ask? Well, that is for you to read and find out.)
All in all I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more stuff from this author. DEVIL CREEK kept my interest and had me thinking about when I wasn’t reading. Oh yes! I will definitely be keeping up with this author.
I received an ARC from the author because I was one of the beta-readers for this book. I can assure you, all opinions are my own and honest. I'm not usually a fan of romance, but this book reads a lot like a coming-of-age story for the MC so I got into it. Enough rambling, let's get to the good stuff!
From a Reader's Perspective: Devil Creek is told from two viewpoints: Aislin, the main female, and Gabe, the main male. Ms. Bond was wise to write it this way, because you get a deeper insight into what each character is thinking. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to reach into the pages and give them both a good shake. But making me care that much about the characters and their eventual outcome is something a good story does. I could connect with Aislin and wondered how many freaking men would have to betray her before she gave up on the gender for good. I was pulled into her world and felt what she felt as the tale moved forward. There are no loose ties left hanging at the end and that was something I appreciated a lot. Plot-wise, it was a brilliant tale and the pacing was really great. I sped through it in no time. There's no insta-love in this book. If that's what you're looking for, this isn't a story for you.
From an Editor's Perspective: I have to say, I would've read a lot faster if not for the need for one more round of edits. It needs contractions, comma attention, and pronoun checks (I also found a couple of spelling errors - wrong word or wrong tense of word used). Because of those, I did get dissuaded a time or two. But they weren't so bad I couldn't read the book and the quality of the story outweighed these errors.
Rating: +1 Star for making me cringe at some of Aislin's situations +1 Star for a heartbreaking tale +1 Star for making me want to slap both of the MCs +1 Star for tying up all loose ends and lack of insta-love scenarios -1 Star for the need for an editor
Overall, 4 out of 5 stars! Recommended for those who love romance or coming-of-age tales that make you want to choke men in general.
I received this books through the Goodreads first reads giveaway There may be some spoilers in this review.
Well. I'm sorry to say it, but I wasn't a fan of this book. First, I was upset because I felt like there wasn't enough character description or development, especially for the main character! It took me awhile to figure out the ages or age range of the characters, physical descriptions and location.
Secondly, and most disappointingly, I found that the book jumped from idea to idea without getting to what I thought would be the main plot of the story. For example: The main character Mercy finds a great job with the fortune teller/new age mystic Celeste. Very suddenly, however, she gets a second job with her somewhat lover/somewhat boyfriend Jaxon. There would be no problem with this if there wasn't such a leap. For example, describing exactly why she needed the second job and how she went about getting it. The process was vague and I found it repeated a lot throughout the book.
And thirdly, the plot/story line all together. I was at least a hundred pages into the book and still was waiting for some sort of main focus to come together (or at least some kind of plot buildup). I assumed the focus would center on the love story of the main characters Jaxon and Mercy, but the MC's seemed to have fallen in love almost immediately while also being simultaneously confused about the others feelings. Insert the previously mentioned random story jumps and you have yourself a very confusing book.
Final verdict: The potential for this book was there but in the end it should have received at least a few more revisions before reaching publication.
This was a hard story to read with the topics of abuse and rape and Aislin seemed to be a magnet for those types of relationships with Gabe being almost the only decent man in her life and as audience, I kept asking myself why he didn't just go for the relationship with the idea that he could save her from the abusers out there. I mean, when weighed on each hand, saving her from himself would definitely be the lesser. Both Gabe and Aislin were engaging, sympathetic, likeable, realistic characters and Devil Creek was a dream of a place to live in. The only things I didn't really agree with was all the detailed talk about high fashion clothes and dressing up the characters as if they were Barbie dolls all the time mainly because it made Aislin seem like she was far too wrapped up in how she looked and rather shallow and all the dwelling on songs playing in the background as if a playlist for the book was being devised. Also I didn't care much for the present tense narration, but then I don't care for present tense in any book since it always comes across as awkward. And I kept asking why she didn't take more action against the people who attacked or threatened her. That was another of the things that made her seem self-centered as if she didn't want people to think she was damaged goods, but that sort of non-action opens the door for other people to get hurt by the abusers. Minor quibbles aside, this was an engaging, deep, raw read, and should be read since there should be more awareness that this sort of thing goes on out there.
Casey L. Bond’s spring release, Shady Bay, is a sweet summer read that I really enjoyed. Full of shocking twists, tender heartaches, and a swoon-worthy romance, Mercy and Jaxon’s story is sure to captivate readers as it unfolds.
Mercy is an absolutely amazing character, strong willed in nature and set on taking care of herself. As the story progresses and her bad experiences are offset by good, readers can’t help but root for Mercy, a heroine who’s circumstances continue to undermine her, both in wealth and health. She must deal with a lot, from a drug crazed mother to a health concern that will have readers biting their nails, but Mercy does not give up; the kindness of others keeps her going, and I admire her will to survive, even when survival seems dim at best.
And Jaxon? Wow! He is a heartthrob, and I absolutely loved his adoration of Mercy. He is forced to make hard choices, many of which are selfless, and his persona was expertly crafted. I am sure that readers will love him just as much as I did, especially as we learn the lengths he’s willing to go to protect the people he loves.
This novel is full of passion; passion for life, love, happiness… and while Mercy and Jaxon definitely have a bumpy ride along the way, I really enjoyed this sweet NA novel, and I think lovers of NA novels will definitely share the sentiment
Mercy Taylor needs a little of what her name implies: Mercy. Her father's in prison, and her mom is wasting away thanks to addiction. Desperate for her own life, she takes a chance and heads to Myrtle Beach with nothing but hope. But her challenges are not behind her, not by a long shot.
Jaxon Harrison heads to Myrtle Beach for his own reasons and is taken with Mercy right away, but he's not sure he can trust her with his heart. When life throws Mercy a curveball, however, he can't help but step up to the plate. Will they get their happily ever after even with all the obstacles?
I loved these characters. Mercy has such strength, even though most young women would be beaten down by all she endures, and Jaxon is sweet and sexy all at the same time. What I loved most was how much emotional depth the author pulled out of these characters. I came to care about both Mercy and Jaxon way beyond the will-they-get-together-or-won't-they factor. With each new test they faced, I became more connected.
A real winner. Casey L Bond is fast-becoming a go-to author for me, and I don't say that very often. Love!
****I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review****
Casey has done it again. She had me riding the emotional roller coaster and feeling for every character in the book. I love her writing style and this book was no exception. She draws you in and leaves you wanting more.
My favorite character is probably Jax. He's sexy, strong, and caring, even though he doesn't want anyone to know it. He's a player to the core but when he meets Mercy, that lifestyle doesn't appeal to his appetite anymore. Only she does.
Mercy is a lot like I think that I am sometimes. She works hard, hides her emotions and takes life in stride. Nothing will bring her down. She's a fighter. You will want to root for her through the entire book and you won't be disappointed by the person she becomes.
This is another must read from Casey Bond. It comes out this May. You won't be disappointed, I PROMISE! Add it to your TBR list now!
Beautiful, Heartfelt and Inspiring. I cried whilst reading this book and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
Mercy's story will forever stay with me. She was so strong throughout her ordeal and that is something to admire.
Jaxon. Well, despite him trying to hide his true self behind his player tendencies, he was the kind of man women wish for. Sweet, thoughtful and of course hot!
I also have to mention Celeste because I adored her. In Mercy's words: she was something and the story wouldn't have been the same without her in it. She would have been missed greatly because she brought an extra something to the story.
This is the second book I've had the absolute pleasure to read by Casey and she has stolen a piece of my heart with each one of them.
Casey did a great job in writing this book.. I loved how you get both Aislin and Gabe's point of view..
Aislin and Gabe are best friends and have always been there for each other. When Gabe gets back from Afghanistan and Aislin breaks up with Ty, things start to change between them. They are beginning to see each other in a different light. Gabe feels like he is breaking the promise he made to Declan before he died to protect Aislin. .. From there we are sent on an emotional roller coaster ride with them.. Gabe will make you want to slap him sometimes and say stop being stupid.. LOL Aislin is such a strong character with everything she went through in her life.. Yet she comes out stronger for it.. It was a Great ending to a emotional Story..
I just loved this book!!! It was such an emotional read. It took me on a wave of emotions. One minute I was laughing the next crying. Sometimes they were sad tears and others were happy tears.
I really loved Mercy’s character. She had a hard life back home. She showed so much strength to go out on her own not knowing what would happen. Mercy stumbles into the lives of people who will swiftly become her closest friends.
Jax is just a total sweet heart … I loved that he stepped up to the plate in Mercy’s time of need.
Celeste is just the best. She is so kind and caring to someone she just met. You will just fall in love with all the characters in the book.
Casey Bond wrote such a Beautiful story!! I’m sure everyone will Love it just as much as I did!!
Enjoyed this and almost groaned when I had to stop reading to go to class. Thought about it on my way home too. So needless to say, I haven't done any homework yet because I was reading. I enjoyed the different POVs and the way the story was told. It really helped me get into the minds of more than just Gabe and Aislin to understand why certain things were happening.
Overall, a good read and I loved this one part at the end especially. I thought it was soridiculously sweet and thoughtful, but I won't say more than that because it's sort of a spoiler.
I was given a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. Here it is:
I loved the storyline of this book! It was a friendship turned on again, off again romance that follows two people from adolescence to adulthood. It sometimes left you feeling like you wanted to just grab Gabe up and slap some sense and realization into him, but what man doesn't at some point lol! Aislin was a sweet girl with a heart of gold that had to make it through some very tough things in her life, that I'll keep to myself so as not to ruin it for other readers, but this girl has some grit in her! Very enjoyable story!
After reading another book by Casey L. Bond, I had very high expectations for Shady Bay...and I was not disappointed! The characters and situations in this book are believable and real. The author drew me in and wove a tale that had my emotions on a roller coaster. I was laughing; I was crying; I was cheering them on. There were ups and downs, but I was totally entertained throughout. I found it hard to put the book down, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I am definitely a fan of this author and her ability to write multiple genres, and I highly recommend Shady Bay, especially for fans of touching beach romances.
This was my first book by Casey Bond and it was wonderful! I loved the setting of Myrtle Beach because I go there every summer so I was able to picture a lot of places Casey talked about in Shady Bay. I could tell right off the bat that Jax was a sweet boy. Mercy had a hard life at home and everyone understood why she had to leave. She was able to meet a lot of friends in Myrtle Beach that became her family. It was a sweet story because here is a girl who doesn't have any money and homeless and 1 woman took her in and she made several friends. I hope there are people like this in the world. I am excited to read what else Casey has in store for us!
Aislin...was okay as a character. Gabe, on the other hand was completely ridiculous.
**skip next line to avoid mild spoiler** GROW UP! Do you really think running away and causing misery to yourself and everyone around you is the best solution? ARGH. **END SPOILER**
Anyhow, I thought the story was too predictable and Aislin's actions were forced to make the story work. For someone so practical, buying a house in the middle of nowhere with no income to speak of just doesn't make sense.
No developing romance, just a realization of feelings.
I was not a huge fan of this book. It was almost a DNF for me but i struggled through. The story just did not seem to flow well for me and there was some jumping around. Some of the most dramatic moments that should have had some time put into them just seemed kind of glossed over, and then we would have detail about surroundings or even cups or something that was just not necessary. The ending also just seemed so rushed that that didn't even make it any better. I couldn't even have any real emotional tie to any of the main characters. Would probably never read it again.
Devil Creek by Casey L. Bond is a wonderfully written book. There are a few editing errors in my edition, but not enough to effect the story. This book is written in third person point of view, which is almost unheard of in the books that I read, but it is done so very professionally that I was thrilled to see everything from outside the action. I was totally drawn into the story line and think this would make a terrific movie. All of the characters had such complete back ground stories, it was too easy to get sucked in. I never put it down.
Shady bay was a captivating summer read that had me laughing and crying at moments. The main character Mercy had so much turmoil to overcome but she did with such strength and passion that I could not help to love her. It was really refreshing to have a strong lead female as a lot of books I have read recently have weak and wimpy females. I thought Jaxon was a good fit for Mercy and was biting my nails after every hardship that they went through. Over all, I would recommend this book to my Friends
The storyline was good but i felt it could have been better. I was somehow hapoy in the beginning. A girl finding her fiancee with someone and move on... And she met people. But somehow the story spanned for too long. And too many drame came in a short time. And the ending was rushing for me. too easy too wrap up. Anyway, it was heartwarming knowing she was friend back with Ty. They once loved but not enough.
Casey Bond takes the reader from a relaxing yoga class to a wild ride of emotional ups and downs as Aislin graduates college and moves escapes one bad situation only to land in another. Bond hardly leaves room for the reader to catch their breath as Aislin faces challenges with courage and strength. The pace is quick, action packed, and the characters real and raw. Oh and Gabe! Note - the editing could be improved, but the story is compelling enough to keep reading.
At 70% read, I am putting this book away. I have been reading it for a week and just can't get into it. I do not like the writers style AT ALL. The characters are okay, and the storyline may be more enjoyable if so much time wasn't spent on meaningless details. I'm not going to give the book 1 star, because, well, that's just mean, and I don't hate the book... It's just not for me.
Also, I would like to point out that there is no type of paranormal twist in this book WHAT-SO-EVER.
