Chechen Wars: A History from Beginning to End

Chechnya’s modern history is marked by its fluctuating ties with the Russian Empire and, later, the Soviet Union. A notable dark chapter was in 1944 when Joseph Stalin ordered the mass deportation of Chechnya’s entire population. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, tensions between ethnic Russians and Chechens escalated into two full-blown wars. The first, in 1994, saw Russian forces invade Chechnya. Though they met their immediate military objectives, the conflict tarnished both Russia’s and Boris Yeltsin’s image on the world stage, and by 1996, Russian troops had fully retreated from Chechen soil.

In the summer of 1999, mounting unrest and the emergence of Muslim warlords in Chechnya stirred conflict with Russia once more. Amid this backdrop, Boris Yeltsin’s health was deteriorating, and an aspiring politician, Vladimir Putin, was on the rise. As Putin eyed the Russian presidency, he recognized the need to demonstrate effective leadership. This aspiration culminated in a brutal war and the subsequent establishment of a Chechen regime aligned with Putin’s interests.

Understanding the Chechen Wars is vital to any understanding of how Russia developed after the collapse of the Soviet Union and how that federation became dominated by one Vladimir Putin. This book delves into the origins, progression, and aftermath of the Chechen Wars.

I chose to read this short history about Chechnya in order to be a bit more informed about Putin's wars in Chechnya and then apply that knowledge to the war in Ukraine. What I read does not inspire confidence.

Chechnya is an unfortunate victim of geography - it lies in a buffer zone between traditional great powers - the Russians, the Ottoman Turks, and the Persians. Even worse, they are on a natural land bridge between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Throw in a religious difference between Russia and the Chechens and you have even more trouble.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Chechnya made a serious effort at independence that ended up in multiple military incursions by the Russians and decades of on and off irregular warfare (think guerrilla warfare plus outright terrorism).

For their part, the Russians responded with their own forms of irregular warfare - assassinations, possible false flag operations, and more.

As I read this, the tit for tat back and forth actions just sort of blend together and in the end it was hard for this outsider to see which corrupt oligarchy The West should support.

Back to what I referred to in the first paragraph - what can some knowledge of the Chechen Wars tell us about the war in Ukraine? To me it says that Russia has a very solid sense of what territories it believes legitimately belong to Russia and it will hang on to that territory, even if it comes with tremendous costs.

Considering that Ukraine is much closer in a cultural sense to Russia than Chechnya is, this bodes poorly for Ukraine. I'm not saying Ukraine should be abandoned (far from it!), but this is going to be a very long-term issue.

I rate this e-book 4 stars out of 5.

Good Overview for not a lot of money

Purchased this to see if I was interested in looking more into the Chechen conflict, and this is a quick overview of the causes and wars and aftermath till 2023. It did everything I imagined it would, minus any photos or maps. A few maps and photos to further contextualize the events would have earned the full 5 stars for me, but nothing else to complain about.

The little war that wouldn’t go away:

They never got much play here because of the Clinton scandals and Americans love for smut.
I do remember the hostage taking at the Russian school. Well written
I never realized that it is a conservative Islamic country.

Fantastic eye opener

The book is neither too long nor too short and one can cover it pretty fast.

The organization of the various facts throughout this book is great and nothing repeats throughout.

Great for history lovers!

A capsule overview of the conflict between the Chechen Republic and the Russian Federation. The short read provides an excellent summary of why the conflict started and continues.
