She'd hate him without end When the golden-haired stranger grabbed and hotly kissed innocent Leigh O'Neal in the tavern's dimly-lit corridor, she almost wished he'd never stop. Her heart had never beat so hard, her breath had never come so fast, her lips had never felt so full! But when she later disguised herself as a boy and stowed away on the Avenger and saw the captain was that same handsome man, she wished she had the courage to jump overboard. The impassioned beauty would never be able to keep away from him... and she'd never forgive him for making her lose control and give him her heart.
He'd punish her forever After finding the scruffy boy hiding on his ship, towering Matthew Blake threw him in the brig for three days -then discovered the lad was the mysterious temptress he'd met the night before. He hadn't forgotten the feel of her thick mahogany hair, the glow of her sultry seductive eyes, nor the thrust of her pert womanly curves. Incensed that he'd been played for a fool, the furious captain first made Leigh dress like a lady...then swore he'd humiliate her like one. Now that they were out on the open sea, Matthew's word was law and no one would keep him from using the provocative stowaway as he pleased while he exacted Rapture's Revenge.
Read: 1/18/26 Setting: War of 1812, Boston, Caribbean, New Orleans, England Trope: mistaken identity/h cross dressed, privateer

Matt can't seem to get enough of her. He plans to make her his mistress once they reach New Orleans.
Plans go awry, thanks to his creole grandmother. The clever lady insist she brings his "ward" out in society. Soon men were vying for her hand, a fact that's driving Matt crazy.
So will Matt realize he is in love in time and marry Leigh or will some other marry her? One fact he should remember is that Leigh will never give up meeting her father.
This was an average old school romance. Matt was the perfect, charming captain. He was definitely swoon worthy! Leigh was an okay h, but she did have a few TSTL moments. All in all, I liked this couple
The problem was the pacing. The 500 pages moved slowly and needed editing. There was nothing that happened in the plot that could excuse that long of a story.
Conclusion: This was an okay romance. I'm intrigued enough to try more books by this author.
sidenote: Matt's brother was impressed when he was 12 years old. I thought we'd find out what happen to him at thd end. But no! The mystery remains
DNF at pg. 150. I know this book was written in the 80s but I can't root for a couple where their first time happens to be him rapeing her. Plus when he thought she was a man he was horrified thinking that she might be gay. Just not my cup of tea. Very triggering for victims of rape.
