The first part of maala (lahore) is literally one of the best plot ever. Even at Episode 19, Lahore Chapters remain on top, and the reason I like this book so much. Second part (Makkah) is also great with so many plottwists. I will never understand the hate towards Maala's character on bookstagram , It feels like 13 year olds are reading it just for romance but it deals with very serious topic. People call her weak (and what for marrying ziyad 🤡) but she is so strong, she is a bit impulsive tho, but realistic.
I will say there is alot of repetition and some scenes are very unnecessary but still a great book and not for 13 year olds, you need to understand the story and character before say anything.
I wish we had met under different circumstances."
What a slow burn.
Do you believe in black magic? This is the story of a very common yet rarely discussed practice in our society: The use of Black Magic to acquire love, money, or revenge.
This is the story of a red flag covered in green paint, but what happens when it rains? The paint starts to wash off.
Nemrah Ahmed is an excellent mystery writer. I could not put this down despite it being such a drag. The author made it so descriptive that next to no detail was left for the bookworm to imagine for themselves, but the characters are very interesting, and I love how she has described a manipulator in her story.
I'm not excited to read another lengthy book, but I really want to find out how this story ends.
Although the plot was interesting and there were some shocking plot twists, sometimes this book just felt annoying. The author says that she is writing these characters based on the reality but they were so pretentious and far from reality. They speak as if they are some philosophers. At times the twists and turns felt like they were written just for the sake of it. The plot and characters became childish. There are some scenes that don't make sense at all. Several points and dialogues are repeated so many times (e.g. Maala saying, "Mai dushman nhi banati likin agr bana lo to qabar tak pohnchati ho) this made me roll my eyes every single time.
P.S. The author often describes transitions (for example a bird's wings turning into a classroom) and they are so annoying.
Okay, wow. I started reading this book in the most random way possible. I saw it lying on the sofa at my cousin’s house, picked it up out of curiosity, and a few pages in; I was completely hooked. I forgot about everything else. Naturally, I ended up taking the book home, and that’s when I realized it wasn’t just a story but a mix of magic, mystery, family dynamics, insecurities, and so much more.
To be honest, I expected to be disappointed. Maybe because I assumed it would have the usual misogyny or stereotypical characters that tend to ruin many Urdu novels for me. But Maala completely surprised me — in the best way possible. The characters have depth, and they’re so easy to relate to. Our protagonist is independent, fierce, and not someone who bends easily to societal norms, yet she finds herself caught in a complicated relationship with the wrong man.
What stood out the most for me, though, was Mahir Fareed’s character. Not because he’s rich (let’s be real, almost every Urdu novel hero is), but because he was one of the first truly decent male protagonists I’ve come across; someone ACTUALLY compatible with the female lead. He loved Maala, but never let that love dictate her choices. He respected her boundaries, gave her space, and even from a distance, remained a steady, reliable presence she could count on.
Loving someone doesn’t mean forcing them to love you back. It means respecting their silences, understanding their struggles, and showing up for them even when things aren’t perfect. People love in different ways: some crave reciprocation, some love to heal parts of themselves, and some love too intensely. But the purest form of love is quiet, consistent, and never feels like a burden.
Maala isn’t just a love story, it’s a life story. A portrayal of how tragedy shapes people, and how resilience emerges from pain. I loved it not only because Nimra Ahmed writes beautifully, but because her storytelling feels modern and mindful. There’s no overt sexism, no tired tropes just complex people navigating life, choices, and fate. And the plot twists??? I was SHOCKED every. single. time. Never once saw them coming.
I told myself I wouldn’t read Part 2… but honestly, who was I kidding?
Mala Part 1 is an exceptional book written on a significant topic of our daily lives tha we are completely unaware of. The book's plot is as good as expected by the author but the twists are on another level. Nemrah's books are always full of plot twists but the ones in this book are exceptional. She tells you soo much about the present that you just want to read what will happen next and whenever you are close to the truth she takes you back to the past and tells you soo much that you now only want to know what happened in the past and when this feeling reaches its extreme, she takes you back to the present and the cycle repeats. This book is so well written that it keeps you bound to it until the very end. The characters in it are also nicely and boldly written. My favorite (of course) is "Mahir Farid" and his little brother. I just love their toxic/brotherly relationship. Barbel is the funniest character that I have read until now (cuz he is soo relatable with my little brother). Overall the story is incredible and is definitely worth the time. Sadly it's just part 1 of the book so I have to wait for part 2 but I have high hopes for it too. Nemrah Ahmed, you are GREAT!
4.5 stars ⭐ This was a really good book. I don't remember all the tiny details because it's been a while since I read it (I read it episodically, like when each episode was being published by the writer). Ah, I get the nostalgia from when we used to wait for new episodes. The writer would sometimes skip a few months, and all the readers would go wild making memes and stuff. Those were some really good times, like the good old days. It’s not *that* old, but yeahh, still… The whole plot of the book was exceptional. The character building was beautiful, it’s a really good novel for adults, for people who can understand the depth. To everyone who hasn’t read it yet, please consider Book One’s ending as the ending as a whole. Book Two is not going to satisfy you. I said what I said.
"Maala" is such a gripping Urdu novel! It’s this perfect mix of mystery, supernatural vibes, and the slowest-burn romance ever. The story instantly pulled me in with its eerie atmosphere as Mala, the protagonist, navigates through secrets, suspense, and some seriously haunting twists.
What really got me hooked is how the novel balances themes of love, faith, and the unseen world so seamlessly—it’s impossible to put down. Nemrah Ahmed’s writing is just chef’s kiss; the characters feel so real, and the imagery is so vivid, I was completely sucked into the story.
And oh my god, the slow burn between Maala and Kaif/Maahir? Absolutely to die for.

Loved it and would definitely recommend it to everyone. However, it does get a bit slow and there were too many flashbacks (or maybe it’s just me who doesn’t enjoy them). Also, I felt like some statements were being repeated over and over again like when Kashmala keeps saying “mei dushman nahi banati aur bana loon toh…” That gets a bit annoying.
Overall it’s a good read. The mystery and connections between situations/characters are amazing!!

Splendid! The twists and turns are awesome... Both male and female protagonist holds a significant character unlike other movies or books where one character sabotages their self-respect again and again and gets nothing in return, here both characters are strong and significant. The black magic plot is just phenomenal.
Waiting for Nemrah Ahmed to complete this book's second part.
