Deceit & Devotion #2

How to Fall in Like with a Monster

Rate this book
My ex is stalking me… and I'm addicted to my potential mate.

Those sentences might not seem like they fit together, but in my case, they do.

Because six months ago, I was turned into a vampire by said ex.

And a few days later, my potential mate—who's a demon—fed me his blood on the sly.

Now, I'm literally addicted to him. My options are to drink from him for the rest of my life, or die.

He's not keen on letting me die, so it's looking like a till-starvation-do-you-part situation.

But my ex isn't going to let me go easily… and my mate will do whatever it takes to keep me safe.

Love isn't an option, but I don't know how I'm going to fight it. Because I'm actually starting to like the sexy, stubborn demon I'm going to spend the rest of my life with.

*This is a steamy, full-length standalone romance with a happily ever after!

Lola is a book lover with a *slight* romance obsession and a passion for love. Especially love between sassy women and huge, growly magical men ;)

When she's not reading or writing up a storm, she's hanging out with her husband and three kids, or baking something sugary that she *probably* shouldn't eat (but will).

Not as good as the first book. I didn’t really like any of the leads, especially Miley. She just kept giving the male lead so many mixed signals and acting like a whiny baby when things didn’t go her way. I wasn’t as interested in her story after book one so I didn’t really think I would enjoy her book. It was fairly short so it wasn’t too bad of a read. Brynn and Bash is the one I’m most anticipating though.

Character Backgrounds and Plot Summary

How to Fall in Like with a Monster continues the quirky paranormal romance world of the Deceit & Devotion series and centers on Miley and Xander. Miley’s situation is anything but simple. After being kidnapped and transformed into a vampire by her obsessive ex boyfriend Evan, her life has become a strange balancing act between surviving her new reality and trying to maintain pieces of the life she loved. She co-owns Coffee and Toffee franchise shops with her best friends Brynn and Tatum, and those friendships continue to provide emotional grounding amid all of the supernatural chaos.

Miley is easy to sympathize with because she is still adjusting to what happened to her. She never chose to become a vampire and there is a lingering sense that she is trying to reclaim control over her life. Her reactions often feel very human despite the supernatural circumstances. The fact that she cannot even successfully feed from another person without getting sick adds another layer to her struggle and creates some entertaining and awkward moments.

Xander Villin is one of the demon brothers introduced earlier in the series and has quietly been helping Miley since her transformation by providing blood bags for her survival. While Miley thought he was simply being kind, Xander had a much bigger reason for doing it. He knew from the beginning that they were probable mates and had been giving her his own blood all along. This revelation completely shifts the dynamic between them because Miley discovers that she has essentially become dependent on him and his blood.

The story follows both characters as they figure out how to navigate a relationship that suddenly carries emotional, physical, and supernatural complications. The romance develops through confusion, attraction, frustration, and a growing realization that their connection may be impossible to ignore.

Highlights and Limitations

One of the strongest aspects of this book is its sense of humor. Lola Glass blends paranormal elements with funny situations and witty dialogue, creating a lighter atmosphere despite the darker circumstances surrounding Miley’s transformation. The feeding mishap and the chaos that follows fit well into the series’ style and help balance the more emotional moments.

The relationship dynamic between Miley and Xander is another highlight. Xander is patient and protective without feeling overbearing. His devotion to Miley was established long before she even knew about their mate connection, which makes his feelings feel earned instead of instant. Miley also has a strong personality and does not simply fall into his arms immediately, which gives the romance room to grow.

The supporting cast remains enjoyable as well. Brynn, Tatum, Sebastian, Rafael, and the larger supernatural group continue to bring warmth and personality to the story. Their interactions make the world feel connected and lived in.

As for limitations, readers who have not read the previous books may feel a little lost. The world building and relationships rely heavily on earlier events and characters. There is a large cast to keep track of, and some information is delivered with the expectation that readers already know who everyone is.

The probable mate setup may also feel a little convenient for readers who prefer romances built more slowly without fated elements driving the relationship.

Narration

Kit Swann and Jack Calihan do a strong job bringing Miley and Xander to life. Kit Swann captures Miley’s mixture of vulnerability, humor, and frustration very effectively. Miley spends much of the story processing confusion and emotional conflict, and Swann handles those shifts naturally without making her feel overly dramatic.

Jack Calihan gives Xander a warm and protective presence that suits the character well. Xander could easily have come across as overly intense considering the mate situation, but Calihan keeps him grounded and sincere. His performance helps sell Xander’s quieter devotion and softer moments. The only complaint I have is that Jack Calihan sounds a bit too old for Xander.

Together they create good chemistry and keep the dialogue engaging. The dual narration format works well for a romance like this because it allows listeners to understand both characters’ perspectives and emotional journeys.

Final Opinion

How to Fall in Like with a Monster delivers exactly what fans of Lola Glass are likely looking for. It mixes paranormal romance, humor, friendship, and fated mate drama into a fun and easy listening experience. Miley and Xander are an enjoyable couple with a sweet connection beneath all of the supernatural complications, and the supporting cast adds charm throughout the story.

For listeners who enjoy light paranormal romances with demons, vampires, found family elements, and plenty of chemistry, this audiobook is a satisfying continuation of the series. It is playful, entertaining, and leaves you wanting to spend more time with these characters.

Zander me Please!!

This was the cutest sweetest most patient Villin of them all !! I love Zander and I’ve loved him since I heard about his fancy surfer hair in the very beginning. He is so sweet and understanding and patient with Miles and she needed someone who was fun but knew how to unravel her mind. While this book was far more action packed then I expected this was the perfect listen on my commute to and from work these last few days. I wish some of my favorite authors would add a little audio to their repertoire!! But I still love them I just have to read them when this week slows the heck down!! Until next time 😍😍😊!!

This is book #2 of Deceit & Devotion and the two main characters are Miles and Zander. Miles is Tatum's best friend and Zander is the next demon brother out of three. Miles is a vampire and got forced to turn during a toxic relationship. This book is all about the ✨️plot✨️ with LOADS of trauma from both sides. I think I found my new obsession with Lola Glass, and I've committed myself to her goodreads groups 😂😂🫶

I'll say I enjoyed it, but: where did the protagonists' personalities go? They seemed neutral to me; I didn't feel any chemistry between them at all during the non-spicy moments.
I hope the next book is more entertaining and true to the main characters.

Loved it!

This was so much better than the first book. I liked the first book, but this one was great! Zander and Miley were a much more believable couple in their relationship dynamic, and the spice was just perfect! On to book 3 and Bash and Brynn.

I wanted him. All of him. Every raw, unfiltered, messy inch, strand, and heartbeat.

This was another fantastic book in what is now my favorite series by Lola Glass! I've been excited to read Miles and Zander's book since she was transformed in book 1, and I loved watching Zander slowly seduce Miles with his easy acceptance and flirty teasing. Zander was so patient with Miles and her need for lists and time to think things over (something I totally understand), but he also wasn't above using his body and their natural attraction for each other in order to advance their relationship. It took me a while to connect with Miles at first, but once I discovered how similar we are, I grew to really love her as a heroine. Together Miles and Zander formed an unbreakable bond that worked for them, ultimately built on trust and love, and I can honestly say that Zander is top-tier book boyfriend material. I cannot wait to see how Bash and Brynn's relationship evolves in the next book🖤

Tropes: fated mates, relationship of convenience, no-strings attached, charming/tech-savvy hero, neuro-divergent heroine, friends-to-lovers, he falls first, monster romance, forced proximity, 'touch her and die' vibes, girl gang, found family, STEAMY🔥

I fell in love with the first book of the series almost instantaneously and I just knew How to Fall in Like with a Monster was gonna be just as good.

Miley is most definitely type A but she's also sassy and stubborn to boot but I think she's met her match. Zander might even be more stubborn than she is. For the most part, I liked her except for one scene when she was being a little annoying. Zander, surprisingly was giving off boss daddy vibes. In the previous books, he seemed freer than his brothers, more laid back but there was more to him. I liked it.

I was a little surprised by the plot, I wasn't expecting the MCs to face the challenges that they did but it was good. I loved the drama not only between the couple but with the problem that arose. The back and forth between Miley and Zander was great, there were more than a few laughable moments. I enjoyed seeing Tatum, Brynn, and the guys, I like that they're still part of the overall story. My favorite parts were the video chats and the text messages between all the characters, they were fantastic.

How to Fall in Like with a Monster was different but good. My love for this series continues. Speaking of continuing, that's two out of three friends to have found their HEA, I have a feeling I know who the third couple will be. I can't wait till Brynn gets her HEA.

Miley is the kind of girl that’s going to look at her immortal demon husband of 85 years and be like “okay, but do you LIKE like me, or…?” and I can’t judge her for that lol.

Zander is such a good boyfriend, and it kind of shocked me? I adore his “we’re going to work/talk through this” mindset. Him talking about how they balance each other was A+.

I feel like this one was smuttier than the first book? (Maybe I need to do a reread. 😅) Anyway, I’m looking forward to book 3!

I read these out of order and want to retroactively dislike book 3 more because that book's FMC is the single friend in this book who can't be happy that her friend is in a relationship because she's still single 😒😒😒

I think I keep rating her books a three because I want them to be flushed out more. 290ish pages isn't giving me all I need from her. I enjoy her writing and enjoy the playfulness and easy connection of her characters.

I found this volume much more engaging than the previous one. The characters are described in a much more realistic way as well as their relationship. The fact that there is much less time jump surely helps. Even if the story is classic and we know in advance that it will be a hea it is very well brought. In addition, there are some details left here and there to make us want to discover another collection of the author featuring dragons. I don't think the last volume will be very surprising in the story but it doesn't matter. The reading is pleasant and we have a good time.

Miley and Zander missed their callings as lawyers. They fucking love contracts.

•••

Possible Triggers - Blood, toxic relationship, abusive ex, death, violence

•••

Tl;Dr - When Miley starts throwing up after a meal, she is not sure what it means. Could she be preggers? NAH! She just can’t eat any blood that doesn’t come from Zander because she’s a vampire and he’s her mate! But her ex is stalking her and she’s not sure how she feels about jumping into an ETERNAL relationship with a demon she hardly knows.

•••

The Characters -
Miley: New vampire with a slight addiction to Zander’s blood. She’s also being stalked. And running a chain of coffee shops. She deserves a spa day.

Zander: A technology loving demon that’s willing to use underhanded tactics to get his girl. He will also make pro-con list.

•••

My Thoughts - There was not a lot of action or angst in this book… but there were a lot of contracts. The spice was good. I wish the plot was less “I’m slightly neurotic and I’m not ready to jump into this relationship yet,” and more “I’m being stalked by my ex and tensions are high but it’s pulling us together anyway”. There just wasn’t any good tension. Nothing made my heart pound.

Still, an easy fun read. This world is cute. Zander is fun. Miley is logically to a fault and it’s kinda hilarious.

This is book two of the Deceit & Devotion series and the main characters are lust demon Zander (Alexander) Villin and Miley, who was turned six months ago by her vampire boyfriend Evan and then dumped. She had to reluctantly join a vampire clan led by his father Charlie, a night club owner, and the only way to tell them apart, was by a scar his father had above his eyebrow. She was saved after being drained by Evan, by Bash (Sebastian) Villin, who was a demon and also made himself her bodyguard. She knew him through one of her best friends, Tatum, who had mated with his younger brother Rafael. The Villins were hated, as they killed vamps who targeted humans when the supernatural government did nothing and were paid handsomely for it by the human government! Miley and her best friends Tatum and Brynn had opened a coffee and candy shop called Coffee & Toffee a few years ago and now had three locations open, with each of them taking different roles, Miley as an accountant dealt with all the finances, Brynn did the marketing and Tatum dealt with the recipes. They each got to run their own shop and were looking to open more. Miley has been lying to her friends and saying she was going to a yoga class in the evenings, but was instead going to the night club, which was vampire owned and run, where customers came and were keen to donate blood, to see if she could get over her aversion and avoidance of trying to drink form a person instead of a blood bag.

After six months, she finally pushes herself to do it even though it reminds her of being with Evan and it tastes foul! She goes to speak to Charlie in his office to try and work out why and is told it is probably because she has received blood from her possible mate! Now Bash has to find out who Zander has been getting to donate the blood to her and that will bring its own surprise! She is addicted to this person’s blood and won’t be able to survive without it. It would take her ten years to rid herself of this addiction and she had already been starving herself to try and build up a stockpile of blood for emergencies, so that won’t work. She needs to find them and either ask if they will be her permanent donor or see if they want to be turned into a vampire and bond with her. Not options that she is really happy with, especially after swearing off men and sex after falling for Evan and what he did to her. Turns out her ex-Evan doesn’t want to let her go even after he deserted her to die, whilst her potential mate doesn’t want to see her die and has been watching her, a lot! It turns out her potential mate is the wild one, Zander, the techie of the family. She thinks he hates her, as he has avoided being anywhere near her, when she was invited to family events, with Tatum and her mate who consider her family. They even let her take over their apartment, giving her some freedom, unlike their poor friend Brynn who stays with her dragon shifter brothers, who don’t allow her any real freedom as she is human and they insist on protecting her!

Zander it seems, only realised she was his mate when she was turned into a vampire, before that he was attracted to her and so avoided her as it was pointless to be with someone who isn’t your mate, for him anyway. Miley is a very organised persona and makes lists for everything, so when she has to figure out what to do about her blood donor and mate, she makes up a list of different options for them to consider. She should have realised he was her perfect match when he responded with more detailed lists of his own. She refuses to feed from him directly and doesn’t want him to feed directly from her, not quite knowing how demons actually feed. She has seen those who come to the night club and most have sex as they are feeding and it seems a very sexual act. Not anything she is happy to do and now the only person she can drink directly from is her mate! When he realises how much she has been starving herself as a newly turned vampire, when she should have been drinking more than a normal vampire, he forces her to move in with him. Being fated mates, they can’t really be far apart anyway, as she has seen from Tatum and Rafael. Being so close to him, she starts to find it really hard not to take matters further, as he is too attractive but also as stubborn as her! He responds to her with text mostly, back and forth, as he lets her settle into one of his spare rooms and he distracts himself with helping his brothers. They can’t stay away from each other for too long, as the desire for his blood gets ever stronger and drives her to distraction and to making a move, especially when other women look at him making her a tad jealous! She has to finally tell Zander about her ex, but they can’t kill him directly unless he makes a move in front of witnesses, as it would start a war, but he wants to kill his father and take over, with her at his side.

Zander has promised to protect her, whatever choice she makes about living together, or actually bonding with him, and it looks like he and his brothers will need to do something, as the threats against Miley get ever more serious and sick in nature! Because of the threat to Miley, her two best friends need to be protected as well, Tatum by her mate, whilst Brynn gets to live off the gossip from them both. Although hopefully, she will be finding her mate soon enough and be made immortal like the rest of her friends and family. Big decisions to be made for Miley and her relationship for life, with Zander, as she is tied to him through his blood and now possibly love. A hot and steamy read towards the end as they fall deeper into a relationship together, whilst Miley has to deal with the damage her ex did to her self-confidence and trust. Long hidden secrets need to be told, if trust is to go both ways. Lovely touch with the Villin’s mother and her wish for all of her boys to find their mates and how far she would go to get that done! Lots of fun to read and great romance on the slow burn. I look forward to reading more of this series and catch up with who is next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

The overall premise for this one was definitely stronger than book 1, and I liked Zander more as a character because honestly he's just fun 😂 but yet again the writing just isn't great.

I also feel like the author is trying too hard to push the whole being stubborn and refusing to let emotions get in the way of this arrangement thing to the point that it's sucking all the romance out of it and making the potentially 🌶 interactions feel a bit robotic.

The Evan storyline was so weak and it's resolution was laughable. I was also very relieved it didn't follow the exact same order as book 1 which would've been downright ridiculous. That being said I'm going to finish book 3 which apparently comes out today (????) and then pretend none of this ever happened 😂

As always and expected, I loved this book. I was so excited for this book after the first book, it did not disappointed. I loved the humor and the fact that the main characters did not back down from each other. This was an enjoyable read and I will be counting down the days again to read the 3rd book of this series.

Not bad. I loved Zander even if it felt like we didn't get to know him as well as Miley. I did think they were a good match with their sort of opposites attract vibe. They balanced each other out.

While I actually enjoyed most of this book and even liked Miley more than I expected to, I still found it underwhelming tbh. I was a bit bored, much of it due to the slow plot and how Miley and Zander were stuck at home. It felt a bit tiresome because the authors trend of putting the reader more heavily in the FMC POV instead of it being equal between both MCs. So, it was very easy to become bored by Miley, especially by the 50% point. That's when I understood why another reviewer complained about her. Although we thankfully move on from the drawn out dramatics between Miley and Zander I couldn't help but look at her differently.

I felt like she didn't have any excuse to keep herself so shut off from Zander. Particularly, how she'd expect him to act or respond a certain way and got upset when he didn't but she wasn't willing to act or respond in that way either. Even if it would've fixed their disagreement. Her problem with communication boggled my mind tbh. It was massively frustrating. And while I understood the trauma that her ex Evan caused her and eventually her history about her mom's family, I refuse to accept that as a good enough reason to behave how she did. She acted entitled and selfish and didn't even consider how Zander might feel, nor did she even take a moment to communicate how his decision made her feel and offer up her own feelings about the situation so they could fix it. Nooo, she stewed in her stubbornness and kept making Zander out to be the bad guy. All she thought and felt was me, me, me and didn't consider this was a joint decision. Yes, be mad he seemingly made a decision for you without considering your idea. But damn, just communicate instead of being a stubborn toddler and acting the way she did for those what two weeks? I don't remember.

Atleast Tatum and Brynn put her in her place throughout the book when she tried to make Zander out to be the bastard and instead got frustrated when her friends saw the reason and logic behind whatever she was upset by that Zander said or did. Served her right.

Also, what is with all these what twenty three and twenty four year olds having multiple branches of their coffee/candy shop? Is that even realistic considering that none of them came from money and had to work hard for it all? I mean yeah Tatum clearly is loaded now because of Rafe and now Miley is because of Zander but realistically it seems absurd to me that Miley was discussing how they were about to open TWO more shops. And somehow she managed this without ever visiting these places, renting the buildings or meeting the people to she would hire to work in the new places and honestly it seemed really weird to me. I'm sure a manager was mentioned here and there but they can't handle it all for an owner I'm sure...but whatever, authors gonna author 😆

Ohhh and what was up with there being no more mentions or insistence from Zander for Miley to feed from him after about the 50-60% mark? Like, did she just stop completely or what? They kept sexing it up and I kept skimming their scenes looking for where she began feeding on him or him bringing it up like he did the entire first half of the book but any mention of feeding or blood or blood bags....nada. It just just vanished. Kinda random and inconsistent tbh..

Anywayyyy! It was decent, not memorable by any means but I did like parts of Miley. Just not the whole package. Zander was a sweetie and I'm glad he got his happily ever after even if Miley seemed like a pain in the ass and not the good kind. 😉
