About the author

Joris Chamblain is a French comic writer and author of children’s books known in particular for having published, in collaboration with the illustrator Aurélie Neyret, his first comic book series Cici’s Journal (Les Carnets de Cerise) which won the Youth Prize at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2014 and no less than twenty awards. Joris's comics are translated in about fifteen countries.

This book was really cute but my biggest thing was Victor didn't really get to show his true self with Marie-Jo. He get sucked into her world and she because everything to him and he lost himself. They are a cute pair together though.

I feel like I could relate to Victor because I never really enjoyed school and would daydream a lot, plus I listened to rock music all the time when I was a teenager. I did love that they struck up a deal to not only help Victor but also Marie-Jo, who was slowly going blind and needed help with managing school life. Victor needed help with his academics so they made the deal.

I do wish that Victor could have shown Marie-Jo a rock song or taken her to a party but when you know you're friend is going blind I guess your wants somehow take a step back in importance.

Les illustrations sont MAGNIFIQUES
Mais par contre je suis complètement perdue, j’ai l’impression de n’avoir eu accès qu’à un dixième de l’histoire et qu’il me manquait plein d’infos. Le langage était assez étrange, j’ai pas compris tous les dialogues. Si j’ai compris l’histoire c’est plus grâce aux dessins qu’aux mots et à la structure de l’histoire.
ps: si j’avais eu l’âge que j’avais quand je lisais les autres Joris Chamblain j’aurais encore plus rien compris😓

[4.5] so cute and heartwarming, and i loved the characters and the art sm !! my only issue was that victor didn't do the concert so he never really opened up to marie :c i don't think that would've changed how she saw him so i don't really get why he didnt,, but anyways if this was a bit longer it would definitely be a 5 star :3

I absolutely adored the art style and the sweet romance, but the storytelling itself was not effective at all. The dialogue feels stilted, the pacing is uneven, and the story beats all over the place. I feel like the writing did not do the art justice.

LE STYLE ARTISTIQUE 10/10 omg absolument magnifique, l'art a vraiment bien accompagné l'histoire.

l'histoire était si adorable, je souhaite seulement qu'elle soit un peu plus longue. C'était une lecture très rapide étant seulement 78 pages. Je recommanderais à tout le monde!

один з найкращих і найгарніших коміксів, що я читала. смішний, щемкий, з прекрасним сюжетом і мальовкою.

двоє зовсім різних підлітків, яких обʼєднує любов до музики. він уособлення хаотичного урагану і невизначеності, вона – вишуканої мелодії віолончелі, спокійної і гармонійної. вони зустрічаються за однією партою і стають друзями. необхідність стати для когось провідною ниткою лише зближує їх. тут є і звичайні шкільні будні, і теплі сімейні моменти, і драма, яка змушує хвилюватись.

не знаю як описати кількома словами все те, що відбувається за ці 92 сторінки. я встигла і посміятись, і поплакати, і надихнутись. проста, на перший погляд, історія виявляється шматочком справжнього життя. мене дуже зачепило.

This graphic novel is a beautiful adaptation of the original 2012 French romance novel Le coeur en braille by Pascal Ruter. An English translation was published in 2017 as A Friend in the Dark.

My heart in Braille is eye pleasingly wonderful, Even the font used & beautiful illustrations.

The story is about Victor. He loves vintage cars dearly and making music in his garage with his friends. But school is hard for him and he seems to always say the wrong thing or maybe he is just misunderstood by people around him. When he meets Marie-Jo, who plays cello and is brilliant in her studies, the two strike up an unlikely friendship, and before long both his grades and his attitude improve.

But it's not all flowers for both of them. So when one day Marie-Jo tells him her secret, Victor is dumbfounded. But he tries the best of his ways to help her out.

This is meet cute romance but I thought this book is about Victor and his struggles which are just sidelined when he is asked to help Marie. I would have loved it, if author had explored the limits and struggles of what Victor was facing and going through.

Overall a good read but could have been better.

What caught my attention to this book were the illustrations and the colors.
In the case of the plot, I would say that it is a quick and cute story.
The novel talks about the topics of chronic illness with blindness as a result, but also the growth of a relationship built on mutual help. But because it is a short story, it feels a little incomplete. I was left wondering how Marie-Jo would take her classes after the end, also it was a disappointment not to read more of the male protagonists, but I understand that he grows more at the end, we just don’t get to see everything.

One good thing it that the story does brings you to think more about the importance of accessibility for all disabilities.

I recommend reading it if you are looking for a quick story to pass the time.

This book feels like things seemed to be happening behind the scenes and we only saw the final result of it on page, which, certainly, doesn’t helps the reader feel anything towards the characters, plot, or anything else (other than the beautiful art) at all. It’s me, I am the reader.

my heart in braille is a heartwarming tale that touches on themes of friendship, empathy, and the importance of breaking down barriers to connect with others. this graphic novel is the definition of short and sweet. the plot was easy to follow and quite simple, yet it was sincere and authentic. something about this book felt so comfortable, like i had a connection to it.

even though victor was supposedly the main character, i feel like the focus of the story was more about marie, a straight A student who's slowly losing her vision. with victor's complications in school, they both strike a deal to help each other. their friendship was very wholesome and pure. the author captured their growing bond wonderfully. i feel like i was actually with them in the story throughout the whole book. i felt their increasing understanding and compassion for each other as the story went on.

i was enthralled with how the disability rep was handled with such care and carefulness. it felt genuine, explorative, and fairly informative. however, i wished the author talked more about victor's struggles as well and not just marie's. from where i stand, victor's issues were sidelined in his own story, which to me seemed a bit odd. i really would've liked getting to know more about victor and the overall development of his character.

the art style was beyond beautiful. i really adored the color palette and how it captured every moment marvelously. the book was quite fast-paced and sometimes i feel like there were scenes that were cut off because the time jumps made me a bit confused. the flow wasn't the best and the pacing was unbalanced. overall, i think the author could've added more to the plot and the complexity of the story. anyway, this book was good but i definitely see some room for improvement.

Victor, un ado en décrochage scolaire, fait la connaissance de Marie-Josée, une jeune fille brillante, passionnée de violoncelle. Cette rencontre va bouleverser leur vie et leur façon de voir et de regarder le monde. "Le coeur en braille" est une BD d'une douceur absolue, tant dans ses dessins que dans son histoire. Magnifique bd très touchante.
Les dessins et la colorisation retranscrivent bien les sentiments du personnage principal.
Le personnage principal est un cancre très attachant, voir le monde à travers ses yeux m’a poussé à revoir mes préjugés sur les cancres issues de mes lointaines années du collège.

Victor est un ado, il vit seul avec son père depuis que sa mère a quitté le domicile, joue du rock dans son garage avec des copains et l’école ce n’est vraiment pas son truc. Jusqu’à ce jour de rentrée où le hasard va l’asseoir à côté de Marie-José. Elle est discrète, bonne élève et surtout une virtuose du violoncelle. Marie-José propose à Victor de lui donner des cours de soutien et cela porte ses fruits car il progresse vite, porté par la confiance que lui accorde la jeune fille. Jusqu’au jour où Marie-José va lui demander de garder son secret et de lui rendre un service : devenir ses yeux…


J’ai eu la chance de lire cette BD avant sa sortie officielle grâce au programme NetGalley.
J’ai été très attirée par la couverture dont je trouve le dessin très beau et me laissait deviner une histoire d’amour mignonne entre deux adolescents, teintée d’émotion.

Et à la lecture j’avoue avoir été plutôt déçue malheureusement. J’aurai tant voulu aimer cette histoire. Pour moi tous les ingrédients étaient réunis : deux adolescents un peu mal dans leur peau, en décalage, un amour de la musique, la perte de la vue qui apporte une note tragique et émouvante, une ambition plus forte que tout, une illustration de qualité…. mais je ne sais pas, il me manque quelque chose. Comme si la recette n’avait pas prise. Il me manque un souffle qui m’emporterait avec Marie-José et Victor. De plus, certains personnages sont un peu trop clichés, un peu passés, à mon goût pour une BD en 2023 : le meilleur ami un peu gros intello et cultivé dont le père d’origine égyptienne est gardien certes mais joueur cultivé d’échec et toujours avec son fez sur la tête notamment. J’avais pourtant été emballée par les Carnets de Cerise car l’histoire et les personnages restaient modernes malgré un certain charme un peu nostalgique. Mais ici la caractérisation des personnages m’a paru un peu daté. Peut-être est-ce dû au fait que la BD soit l’adaptation d’un roman jeunesse du même nom datant de 2012 (et encore cela n’est pas si vieux). Autre bémol qui explique pour moi l’absence d’émotion, tout va trop vite. L’histoire aurait mérité d’être plus développée, plus creusée. Il est aussi difficile de croire que les parents de Marie-José n'aient rien vu alors qu’elle est perdue sans l’assistance de Victor.

Je suis presque désolée de faire cette critique négative car comme je l’ai dit j’aurai vraiment voulu aimer le Cœur en braille. Du coup, je vais retourner me lover dans les Carnets de Cerise pour me remettre de cette petite déception, en attendant le prochain titre de Chamblain.

I adored this graphic novel. It was a heartwarming love story, rich as a warm stew. I couldn't help but root for the two leads, both singly and especially together--they were characterised so beautifully, both via the writing and the simply stunning illustrations. I particularly enjoyed how much of the French background came through. The emotional core of the story, though simple, was powerful and resonant; I finished it in one sitting with a huge smile on my face.

C'était une histoire touchante et mignonne. Cependant, j'ai trouvé qu'il y avait un réel manque de profondeur, tant en ce qui concerne les personnages principaux que secondaires, ainsi que dans leurs relations et les thèmes traités. L'intrigue était largement prévisible et parfois même un brin simpliste. Aussi, certaines répliques semblaient peu crédibles dans la bouche de jeunes adolescents. Toutefois, les illustrations étaient très agréables avec des couleurs toutes douces.

Хто б міг подумати, що українською мовою ми побачимо ще якесь банд десіне Жоріса Шамблена, окрім серії «Щоденники Вишеньки». Та ще й досить свіже, адже бд «Серце шрифтом Брайля», яке малювала Анна-Ліз Нален, вийшло друком від французького видавництва Dargaud у березні 2023. Воно є графічною адаптацією оригінального однойменного французького любовного роману 2012 року Паскаля Рютера. Але це не перша адаптація цього твору, адже у 2016 році на екрани вийшла кінострічка французького режисера Мішеля Бужена. Та давайте перейдемо вже до самого альбому від видавництва Nasha Idea.

Віктор цінує старовинні машини та грає в музичному гурті, який проводить збори та тренування в його гаражі. Проте йому складно дається навчання в школі, і його постійно викликають до директора за погану поведінку. Схоже, хлопець завжди говорить і робить щось не так. Він не такий, як інші… Однак коли він знайомиться зі старшокласницею Марі-Жозе, що також вміло грає на віолончелі, вони стають друзями. Дивно, як такі різні люди можуть підтримувати дружбу, але для Віктора це стає також вигідним — його вже не лякають погані оцінки, і його не стільки докоряють за погану поведінку. Та чи можна завершити цю історію щасливим кінцем? На жаль, ні… Оскільки в Марі-Жозе є страшна таємниця, яку вона розкриває своєму новому другові. Тепер Віктор повинен допомогти їй, щоб здійснити мрії дівчини, при тому уникнути великих неприємностей.

Це банд десіне є історією несподіваної романтичної зустрічі двох особистостей, яких зближаються між собою. Сюжет є драматичним і чуттєвим, але я очікував, що в центрі уваги будуть також особисті проблеми Віктора, які відходять на другий план, коли він почав допомагати Марі. Якщо розглядати цей крок, як самопожертву, то питання до сценариста можна було упустити. Але я б оцінив більш глибоке дослідження автором перешкод і труднощів, з якими стикається Віктор і які він долає також. Це додало б оповіді більше глибини й резонансу, зробило б персонажів та їхні переживання ще більш переконливими. Але, на жаль, Жоріс Шамблен вирішив інакше.

Візуальний аспект також досить чудовий, який дійсно збагатив цю історію. Художній стиль Анни-Ліз Нален відіграв важливу роль у доповненні та посиленні загального враження від розповіді, створюючи більшу глибину та занурення для читача. Художниця зуміла добре показати емоції та почуття героїв, що є вкрай важливо в такій романтично-драматичній історії.

Незважаючи на кілька надуманих, неправдоподібних моментів і брак розкриття особистості Віктора, «Серце шрифтом Брайля» — це хороша романтична історія кохання, яка має шанс вас зачарувати та розчулити.

This graphic novel was one of my favorite of this year!
I'm in love with the art style of Anne-Lise Nalin. Everything seems so vivid and I loved the colors used for "telling the story".
Victor and Marie-Jo are an amazing duo! He plays in a rock band and she plays cello. They have opposite character but get along well especially after they end up sitting next to eachother in class.
Marie starts helping Victor to get his grades up.Gradually they fall in love and when Marie tells Victor about her disease, he did everything to help her.
I felt close to the characters, like they were my friends. They gave me so many emotions!
"Don’t give up your dreams" is one of the meaning of this graphic novel. This story warmed my heart and brought me so much hope.

My heart in Braille is a short, fast-paced graphic novel about two teenagers struggling in different ways. One has a hard time getting his grades up, and the other is a brilliant student who happens to go blind. an interesting friendship blooms.
I found this to be such a sweet story that captivated the two main characters so well. the main character who is going blind throughout the story has strong character traits. luckily, even with these characteristics, the disability representation was portrayed fairly realistically.
the plot was fast-paced, but I think that didn't hinder the story. Only a couple of times did I think we could've had a bit more information and plot.

This was a very cute graphic novel! I loved the art style, Marie-Jo and Victor were adorable together, and the story was pretty cute. It's fairly short, but I had a fun time reading.
