Nocturnus #1

Enemy Below

Rate this book
We aren't alone. The enemies are already here... beneath our feet.
Beneath the surface, a war rages between the surviving demons still inhabiting the Earth and those few, the initiated, who fight to keep it buried deep where it belongs in the darkest shadows.

Troy Odell was doing what he did best, taking the fight to the enemies of the free world. No two missions were ever the same, but he never expected his world to turn so violently upside down. The only surviving member of his team of US Marine Raiders, he finds himself drawn into that secret battle.

Adapting to his new reality, Odell must find his place in that new world and come to terms with not only the truth about the world but where he fits in it.

Fighting enemies he though only existed in movies, Odell soon learns that his side of that secret war is vastly unprepared for what is to come.

Don't miss the start of this new action-packed series from Devon C. Ford, bestselling author of After it Happened. Filled with his patented, gritty military action and monstrous horrors, GEARS OF WAR meets HELL DIVERS in a series that's perfect for fans of Jason Anspach, Larry Correia, and David Weber.

Devon is from the UK, having lived in many places until finally settling in the Midlands. His career in public services started in his teens and has provided a wealth of experiences, both good and some very bad, which form the basis of the book ideas that cause regular insomnia.

He first started reading for fun as an adult, having tried his hardest to avoid anything resembling academia growing up, and at that point the world became a far bigger place. He has been reading, at least one book at a time, ever since.

His debut works, the After It Happened series, (Survival, Humanity, Society) were published in April 2016 followed by Hope (July 2016) and Sanctuary (December 2016). The first part of the series concluded with the release of Rebellion which was published in June 2017.

Storming high into the charts with the first books of the After It Happened series, Devon launched into the top 10 sellers listings in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US, and he made the decision to write full time shortly after the launch of Hope.

Devon’s self-published beginnings caused a stir in the publishing world, and resulted in contracts with Podium Publishing for Audible, narrated by R.C. Bray (The Martian, Expeditionary Force, Arisen), before a publishing deal for kindle and paperbacks with Vulpine Press.

Further works have seen the start of a multi-author series, sci-fi/post-apocalyptic cross genre, futuristic dystopian and alternative history zombie apocalypse. Spin-off books from the After It Happened world have been announced for 2018.

Great read from a consistently great author.

So what happens when the bad guys ‘evolve’ to stop being wiped out by the good guys?
The good guys get better and more resources and hit back.
This story is about that and a group of people who save the world - one monster at a time. Mr Ford is a really imaginative author whose tools of trade are the ability to take a time worn storyline and match this with ‘different’ characters and blend it all into an enthralling tale about good vs evil as only he can.
If you like the perversity of the ‘As it happened’ series and you enjoy a good yarn where the good guys take knocks but keep coming the. - get some.

A awesome beginning

All stories need an awesome beginning. This story does not disappoint. It drags you into a world that is fascinating yet extremely dangerous for each of our characters. We get to dive into the world of the supernatural and what it takes for even the best of humanity to survive. This is a fight that 99.9% of humanity would either run from or die from and or most would just close their eyes and mess their pants. We get to meet and ride along with some of the few and the brave that are taking the fight directly to these monsters of the night. I enjoyed every page and look forward to the continuation of the story in the next book.

Thoroughly enjoyed the story and eager to read more!

What starts as a special operation ends very, very badly and launches the main character, Odell, into a whole new world that he has trouble digesting at first. But he has the skills and a cast of characters around him to keep the story interesting and entertaining.

I like the new spin on the baddies in this story, I love military horror and this one delivers good action but also delves into the characters. Great balance for me (though I am totally down for more tactics and violence, lol).

Book one

This isn't litrpg guys. This is just some good 'ol monster hunting.
I enjoyed reading this book and will be watching for the second book.
Now this book wasn't perfect. It has missing words, misspelled words, and just flat out wrong words. Heck there is even a little part where the author seems to have forgotten how much was given as a tip.
You can find all of this listed on Goodreads.
I don't think it's on Royalroad, but I'm going to check to be sure.

Good with some hesitation

I enjoyed the story but it didn’t seem to fully mesh for me. The hunters didn’t seem all that professional or as prepared as they should be. The werewolf at the end seemed too easy to kill as well. Still enjoyed it overall though. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

Devon Ford's Enemy Below is a ripping yarn of derring-do, as Sergeant O'Dell and his daring companions combat the Things that go Bump in the night. Plenty of sympathetic, well drawn characters, wielding fearsome weapons in non-stop action. Adventure with a heart.
Buy it, read it. David Watson, author of 1920, Tunguska Terror.

And he does it again

Mr Ford has once again delivered an amazing book and I can't wait to read the next one. I can honestly say he has not written a single bad book and if you are starting out on your journey with this author make sure and read all his other work because I promise you will not be disappointed.

A different kind of book to read and enjoy.

You are taken in time for Marines that have mission to help people on a planet , but things go wrong as well as strange things happen . There is only one person that makes back then his life is turn up side down . The does a good job with the book and keeps you wanting more.

What if the legendary monsters were real?

A mix of shoot ‘em up and folk lore at the bloody end.

Werewolves vs human in a hi tech modern setting

A page turner and well worth your attention

Really good read.

I only got into this book because I thought it was a vampire horror. Even though I enjoy all monster horror its the vampire stuff I prefer. But this was very good and I got into it right away. I'll read the entire series because its worth it.
