How to Train Your Demon

Rate this book
“Julie Kenner’s Demon Hunting Soccer Mom is one of the high water marks in urban fantasy.”—Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of ARARAT and RED HANDS

If you want something done, ask a busy person. Kate Conner could kill whoever first said that.

As if the full-time mom, part-time demon hunter didn’t have enough to do, she’s now been given a third job—as headmistress at a special academy for up-and-coming slayers.

Kate’s first charge? Her own teenage daughter Allie, who thanks to her unique heritage, has more power than either she or Kate understands. And definitely more than either knows how to use.

But they’ll have to figure it out fast when dark forces descend on the school, and … Seriously, can Kate just catch a break already?!

J. Kenner (aka Julie Kenner) is the New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, Wall Street Journal and International bestselling author of over seventy novels, novellas and short stories in a variety of genres.

Though known primarily for her award-winning and international bestselling erotic romances (including the Stark and Most Wanted series) that have reached as high as #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, JK has been writing full time for over a decade in a variety of genres including paranormal and contemporary romance, “chicklit” suspense, urban fantasy, Victorian-era thrillers (coming soon), and paranormal mommy lit.

Her foray into the latter, Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom by Julie Kenner, has been consistently in development in Hollywood since prior to publication. Most recently, it has been optioned by Warner Brothers Television for development as series on the CW Network with Alloy Entertainment producing.

JK has been praised by Publishers Weekly as an author with a “flair for dialogue and eccentric characterizations” and by RT Bookclub for having “cornered the market on sinfully attractive, dominant antiheroes and the women who swopn for him.” A three time finalist for Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA award, JK took home the first RITA trophy awarded in the category of erotic romance in 2014 for her novel, Claim Me (book 2 of her Stark Trilogy).

Her books have sold well over a million copies and are published in over over twenty countries.

In her previous career as an attorney, JK worked as a clerk on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and practiced primarily civil, entertainment and First Amendment litigation in Los Angeles and Irvine, California, as well as in Austin, Texas. She currently lives in Central Texas, with her husband, two daughters, and two rather spastic cats.

Much like most of this series, this book was 1 step forward, 3 steps back. I liked how getting the school set up was going, seeing the new students, seeing Allie deal with her new normal, but am getting tired of Kate not sure between Stuart and Eric. I really had the once choice she made in particular. At this point, I don't care who she picks, she needs to pick, because no matter who the odd man out will be, he will end up sticking around to help.

The new students were interesting. Some were helpful right away, others were more bother than they were worth and deserved getting what came to them. I do think those that stuck around will be a good fit to the others.

It will be interesting to see where things go from here for them all.

I have to say Paranormal is not my first choice of reading and it’s not a genre I’m drawn to but with that being said I love Julie Kenner so I was always going to give this series a chance. I was intrigued by the blurb let’s be honest who wouldn’t love a demon hunting soccer mum and I wasn’t disappointed.
Kate is the headmistress of a special academy for demon slayers and when her first student is her daughter Allie, no one knew what would be unleashed. Allie’s powers go way beyond Kate’s knowledge and that means working together to ward off evil so can they save San Diablo from the demons he possess. You will need to one click to find that out.

4 star Review of How To Train Your Demon (Demon-Hunting Soccer Mum #8) by Julie Kenner
Paranormal is not normally a genre that I would normally read but as it was written by Julie Kenner I decided to give How To Train Your Demon a go. The blurb was intriguing, a demon hunting soccer mum? It was certainly a unique story line that grabbed my interest.
Kate is a busy mum who is now also the headmistress of a special academy for demon slayers. When her first student turns out to be her own daughter Allie, she has no idea what is about to be unleashed on the family. Allie has powers far beyond what she or her mum have knowledge of and they will need to work together to fight the evil forces that are surrounding them.
Can Kate and Allie save San Diablo from the demons? One click and find out.

I have loved this series from the beginning and was disappointed in the rumors there would be a television series -- that never came to fruition. Yet glad there is a new book when I thought the series had ended. I know, so many conflicting emotions surrounding a book about a demon hunting soccer mom.

Julie Kenner does an admirable job of rehashing the past books and relationships but to fully appreciate what is going on, new to this series readers must start at the beginning for all the minutia and humor.

The final chapters started too simple, too anticlimactic, and then a punch to the gut and you are in a mad race to the end.

The reader needs to remember that this is a self-published book and you will find editing and continuity issues.

Fast paced and much better than the previous

I always enjoyed this series. Found it a long time ago and my teen age boys and I all read an talked about it. Took awhile for these last two books, the boys are grown and I doubt they will read them, but I a, glad I did. They closed out this story and if she does not write more I will feel like things were wrapped up well. However I look forward to read more about the training school and the next generation of hunters. Perhaps an academy spin off series?.

A generous 3 stars. More like 2.5. This was good and very enjoyable until the end. The end ruined the entire experience for me. The end was so rushed I could barely wrap my head around it. And the tone was really weird at the end. It felt like there were no high stakes at all. Much different than her last Demon Hunter books. Also, so many typos. It was weird.

Sigh. Well, I’ll always have the first 7 books from this series. I’ve read those multiple times and enjoyed them immensely.

Kate and her Demon hunting family continues to take down demons while setting up a school for hunters. So her title now is mom, wife, demon Hunter, now head master. What else could go wrong…will you have to read to find out.
Thank you Julie Kenner, for continuing this story of Kate and her family.
Looking forward to seeing what’s next!

Demon-Hunting soccer mom is back!

I love these tales that Juli writes about demon hunting in a small town. This is a fun series and she keeps adding cool characters to the bunch.

3.5 I'm fully in this series, but it is predictable, poorly edited, and perhaps they jumped the shark a bit in this installment. Yet I can't look away ...
