Tsutomu Nihei (弐瓶 勉 Nihei Tsutomu, born 1971) is a Japanese manga artist. His cyberpunk-influenced artwork has gained a strong cult following. He has a relatively large community of fans in Germany where his manga Blame!, NOiSE and Biomega were published by Ehapa. Blame! was also published in France and Spain by Glénat, in the US by Tokyopop and in Italy by Panini Comics.
At first he studied architecture and later it is shown up in his manga works with drawing huge structures. This became one of his general theme that makes his manga unique. His works are usually in black and white. He is also an avid fan of the video game series Halo, as he mentions in his commentary section in the Halo Graphic Novel.
It was fun to see Wolverine in a Nihei universe. Love the title Snikt because we get what he initially did with Blame! Before it got the name we know. But what’s most impressive about this comic, is that we get a point of view that may help understand what’s missing in Marvel and DC.
This story does an excellent job at placing a character we’re familiar with, and putting him to use in a story to drive the plot forward. You can feel how Wolverine has a purpose in this story. In Nihei fashion, the comic feels open to interpretation. Do the people beat the enemy for good?
In all, this is a great story that could get 5 stars if it had a couple more chapters, not to close it out, or make it less interpretative, but to let us fall deeper into this cyberpunk universe, and immerse us in the despair of the universe before Wolverine shows up. Maybe to allow a better reason to not just get adimatium somewhere else, or to blame the mechanics of time travel lol…
The art is also amazing, and very Nihei. If no one told me this was his book, I could know from the art alone.
Worth checking out for the amazing art, but the story has little substance. It's like they had a really cool Terminator-esque movie idea with all this great character and world-building, but dropped Wolverine right into the climax with minimal build up and context.
