I'm not sure how to rate this one.

On the one hand, if this had been book 3 or 4 in the series I probably would've enjoyed it more, but after I started it, I got about halfway through and just sort of lost interest. I'm thinking I might have overdosed on the whole 'DCI Kett' universe and at this point what had seemed like fun through-jokes and banter, just started to grate on me. The thing with the squirrel was really transparent and it was easy to see how that would play out. The main story seemed to get unnecessarily complicated by extraneous plot lines that didn't need to be there. And I think the ending wasn't really how it was initially envisioned by the author, but he wanted to do more of a switcheroo on the readers, because everyone knows that it can't be a crime-fiction/police procedural, without at least a couple of twists.

I could also see how certain other parts of the storyline were being foreshadowed really easily, despite the eventual denouement not really feeling like it was done right. It felt rushed. Ideas had at the beginning didn't eventually come to anything, there were too many red-herrings and too much explanation for the whydunit as much as the whodunit, loaded onto the last quarter of the book. There might have even been 2 books in this originally but Alex Smith decided to smoosh them together because he didn't want it to be too much like the storyline of "Every Mother's Son" which was book number #7 in this series.

Speaking of which, Kett's mother has been conspicuously absent ever since she moved out of their home and into her own place. I guess she's served her purpose then??

Maybe I'm being too harsh because I personally have read too many of the 'DCI Kett' books in too short a space of time and I'm not really all that enamoured with the series anymore. I still have the next one in the series downloaded onto my Kindle, for whenever I feel like reading it and whilst part of me wants to just read it and be done with it all, the other part of me thinks I should hold off, go read something else for a while, and then come back to it when I've had time away from what's 'Normal For Norfolk'.

I'm giving this book a 3 star rating, based on the fact that I've read 14 books in this series now and I can't help but think it might be time to retire 'DCI Kett'. It was an alright instalment in the series, but I've read better and enjoyed others much more.

Amazing! This is the first review I have ever written (usually I just star them to remind myself what I have enjoyed) but needed to give this one a review for several reasons:
1. I found this series whilst on a serious hangover from finishing another series and couldn’t imagine anything matching up, but this one did! I have binged the whole series in the last three months and completely loved them
2. It’s set at Christmas! With it being Christmas next week I had been really torn about putting these down and getting started on one of the many Christmas books I have - luckily I didn’t and this was a win-win!
3. THE CROSSOVER! The book hangover I was getting over was JD Kirk’s Logan series, so the cameo from him had me screaming in shocked delight! I cannot tell you the reaction I had to these two characters meeting.
Amazing books, great plots and likeable characters, I absolutely cannot wait until the next book comes out!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Another brilliant book in the DCI Kett series.
This one is set in the lead up to Christmas but other than Clare and his Christmassy office, things are as busy as ever so the team aren’t able to enjoy it.
With two men’s bodies being found in a chimney in a remote cabin in the woods, Kett and the team need to find the killer or killers.
There’s a local family linked to the cabin but all is not what it seems with them.
There’s also a cult located nearby with a creepy leader who Kett does not trust at alll.
This is a great crime thriller with some great humour mixed in as well.

This one has a Christmas theme running through it which I was unaware of until I started it. It didn't matter as the story was as brilliant as the others in this series. The characters are all funny and quirky which makes it in the story.

A tossing good book with a deliciously devious festive theme. DCI Kett and the team are in fine form and the investigation into a dead Santa gives rise to many humorous scenes
Fast paced, plenty of Clare, plenty of Dokey and even a nod to another series by a different author.
Thoroughly enjoyable

Unholy Saints is book fourteen in the DCI Kett series by Alex Smith. The week before Christmas, DCI Kett and his team were hoping for a quiet time. However, that did not happen. They caught a case of a body found in the chimney of an abandoned cabin dressed as a Santa Clause. Four young people camping near the isolated cabin found the body. DCI Kett felt there was more to their story but had to leave it to investigate the second body found in the chimney, which was more recent than the first. The readers of Unholy Saints will continue to follow DCI Kett and his team's investigations to discover what happens.

I had only read one other book in this series before Unholy Saints, and I enjoy Alex Smith's writing style and how he portrays his characters. I decided to go back to the beginning to get more background on the main characters. Unholy Saints is well-written and researched by Alex Smith. I like Alex Smith's description of the settings, which allows me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of Unholy Saints will understand the issues everyone faces when involved with bullies and how this can impact law enforcement officers.

I recommend this book.

I had been counting down the days for the release of this book last year, and it didn't disappoint! This is Book 14 of an amazing crime series. I was drawn to it originally as it is set in Norwich where my son is at university. Alex Smith never fails to engage the reader with the plot and the characters. I like how Duke was more centre stage in this book. As well as giving me my crime fix, this book also delivers humour through Kett's team. Their interactions makes me laugh out loud. I cant wait for Book 15 !

I felt like it was a bit hard to get into this one at first, but I enjoyed it as it progressed. Feels like there are some loose ends from this one though, which isn't usually the case! How DCI Kett has survived some of the situations he gets himself into, and still manages to survive, is beyond me, but very glad that he did. I love that Evie got what she wanted in the end too - that was a really nice touch!
The secret santa scene was really funny too.

First of all, let me say that I love DCI Kett and his family, and his colleagues. Alex Smith draws them all clearly for us.

This story is loaded with strange characters, including a cult leader and a female gang leader who uses her sons to apparently terrorise the neighbourhood. The story itself is strong and readable. If I found a fault at all, I'd perhaps say it was a little overlong.

Overall, however, It's another five star book from Alex Smith.

The Kett series books are getting a bit samey for me, but I'm still glad to have got out of the interminable PigMan plots.

This book was enjoyable enough, with a good twist, and a couple of (very!) unexpected appearances. And a nice seasonal side thread for Christmas.

Took me a while to get through this one in comparison to the others. Dragged on a bit and no where near as page turning as others in the series. Glad to finish it to get it done so I can go onto the next one which is hopefully back up to the high standards of others in the series.

As always I look forward to new offerings from the pen of Alex Smith, It has been so since reading his YA Furnace Series over a decade ago. I picked up this title on release day but And devoured it in 3 days over 5 sittings. It is another excellent volume in a great series. I could hardly put it down. I got up very early to start it on release day, and stayed up way too late the next night reading.

The description of this volume is:

“Evil waits in the dead of winter...

Christmas is just days away, and DCI Kett and the Extreme Crime Task Force are preparing to celebrate the festive season with some well-earned peace and quiet.

But all hopes of a restful holiday are crushed when a man dressed as Santa Claus is found dead in the chimney of an old cabin.

And he’s just the first.

The hunt for a monster begins, but standing in the way is a cutthroat family of thieves, a bloody vendetta and a sinister cult led by a man known only as Saint Nick.

In a town full of secrets, somebody knows the truth. But they’re willing to kill to keep it buried.

And in this bleakest of midwinters, nobody is guaranteed to wake up on Christmas morning…”

The story starts with youth camping, a cabin in the woods, and a chimney that just keeps giving. First a body dessed at Saint Nick drops from the chimney, and from the state of the corpse it has been there a while. While investigating that corpse, they discover the chimney has other gifts to drop on Kett’s team, or at least in front of them. And this leads them on a chase to find out the who, what, and why. They know the how, and the where. There is a family reminiscent of the Black Donnelly’s of Lucan\Chatham fame. A cult lead by a guy calling him self Saint Nic. And nothing is as it appears. Can Kett unravel the case before it becomes the death of him? To find out you will need to read this newest instalment in the DCI Kett series.

This story did not go where I was expecting. It became much darker that I thought it was. And it leaves a new threat out there against Kett and his team. A highlight of the story was a phone call between Kett and Certain DCI from further up north. For fan of J.D. Kirk it is wort reading just for that exchange.

If you have read the other DCI Kett books this one is a must read. If you happen to be a fan of rough and tough action you will almost certainly enjoy this novel. And the other books in the series. This is the fifteenth of the DCI Kett stories that I have read, the sixteenth novel where Kett makes an appearance. Kett made a brief appearance in The Harder They Fall, the first of the Softley Series of books.

About the author we are informed that:

“Alex Smith wrote his first book when he was six. It wasn’t particularly good, but it did have some supernatural monsters in it. His latest books, the DCI Robert Kett thrillers, have monsters in it too, although these monsters are very human, and all the more terrifying for it. He lives in Norwich with his wife and three young daughters.”

My original introduction to Smith’s works were The Furnace novels many years ago. I have not read everything he has published but much of it. They are almost always edge of your seat thrillers. I still hope that someday he will finally release book 2 is the Softley Softley Series, but until then I am thankful for another read in this dark and gritty series. For some the Kett stories will be the things of nightmares, for others a look at the underside of society. But no matter how you read them they are crime thrillers with a lot of action, great characters and often a significant violence! This one has several surprises for Kett, the team and for us the readers! It is well worth the read.

I loved this, wish I could have read it faster but then it would have been over quicker. This is my favourite DCI Kett book for many reasons. 1) though it’s set around Christmas it doesn’t become over bearing. 2) Chapter 18 is one of the funniest chapters I have ever read. My wife was furiously telling me to stop sniggering as it was distracting her. 3) Chapter 28 an unexpected cameo that had me reaching for my phone to message a friend. Only to find out she was due to start the book today. Pah friends

But overly this book is just great, the pacing works. The twists work, The Kett girls remain brilliant and the ultimate opposite to the horrors that Kett faces in his job.

So it starts with a “demon” crawling out of a chimney. This book covers some very important topics and how the media is so easily played at times. Thank you Alex Smith for a great book.

Just finished reading Unholy Saints, book 14 in the DCI Robert Kett series by Alex Smith. I enjoy the DCI Kett series so much, they really are excellent. The characters are great, the criminals evil and the plot twisty, what more could you ask for?

The story moves at a good pace and you will find yourself unable to put it down. It has the usual mixture of highs and lows and I found myself holding my hand to my mouth in horror and then laughing a few pages later.

There also an added bonus as there is a reference to another favourite character of mine, DCI Jack Logan in a series by JD Kirk. However, their style of writing has similarities and the humour encapsulated in their writing.

So, if you enjoy work by JD Kirk, Angela Marsons you are likely to enjoy this series. I cannot praise it enough 😊

Unholy Saints -

Another cracking Kett series book. Alex never lets us down with his books. In this one Santa is killed (but not the real one), there’s a cult leader St Nick and then East Anglia’s toughest family. Kett and crew get into their normal scrapes as they try to solve the mystery. Does the real killer get caught in the end? Does Kett need to be looking over his shoulder in the future? I can see Kett having a new adversary in the up and coming books. Another 5 out of 5 from me and my usual comment to others who have not read this series - start at number 1 book and read them all, you’ll not be disappointed.

Santa is Dead Whodunit

Who could have killed Santa and left his body in a chimney? This is a fast paced murder thriller written by a brilliant author, Alex Smith. I highly recommend this series that is best read from book 1 of the series called "Paper Girls". DCI Kett gets in horrific situations and leaves a part of him at each crime scene but leaves the evil at his doorstep when he crosses the threshold into his home. His healing love of his lively family of three girls is what he craves, and tea, don't forget the cuppa!

I have whizzed through these books, I'm sorry Alex but write quicker as I now have to wait for the next one 😂, however I am now going to give your Softly, Softly series a go have just started the first one 👍
Have enjoyed getting to know all the characters, I'm a bit so so about Billie as she was so supportive of Robbie after everything they had been through, but in the last 2 books not so much 🤔 he is supposed to leave it all on the doorstep now so it's a bit of a turn around for me. But she doesn't feature enough in the stories to spoil them for me. So basically keep Ketting it up 🙂🙃

Continually fab writing

Another case for Robbie and his team, plus Supt Clare too. I didn't see the ending (or the almost ending) but instead am just looking forward to the next novel. But how long before Robbie has a case that doesn't get him beaten in some way. However, I think he clearly loves not just his job but those around him keep him you're to his cause. Robbie is without doubt the officer you want running the case if it was your family member killed or seriously hurt.

Unholy Saints by Alex Smith is book 14 in the D I Kett crime thriller police series.
This involves a cult, Santa stuck up a chimney dead and other deaths, pigs are also involved!!
The Kett family are all looking forward to Christmas and Evie was wants one particular present a LivePet squirrel, which Evie has already called Barnaby. Unfortunately they are sold out in the stores when Kett starts trying to buy one. An unlikely source comes to his rescue.

Unholy Saints

Brilliantly written to make you need to keep reading (listening) . DCI Robbie Kett's face must be permanently scarred, there’s a fight going on, he'll be there in the middle, getting his face rearranged. Anyway, this poor man & his team's week before Christmas, is eventful. Secret Santa is something that didn’t happen before my retirement, so I know nothing about it, but it doesn’t seem worth doing!. Enjoy this latest offering though, I did.

Santa Clare saves the day!

Another thrilling episode in the world of DCI Robbie Kett. Not wanting to spoil anything but there is a great small part where Kett contacts another colleague based in Scotland who is a lead character in a series of books that I read from a great Scottish author. A little cliff hanger at the end to let us know the case wasn't completely solved. Onto the next one!

a special time of the year

An appropriate novel for the season, perhaps not as full of cheer as it dictates but what a whirlwind of a read. The pace of the book was furious as we sped past the twists and turns of the storyline, kept me up all night before I got to the end because I could not rest otherwise. A great read by an inventive author don't miss it

I always look forward to new releases in this series. I love the characters and am heavily invested in their personal stories.
This is a series that seems to get better book by book. many detective series feel incredibly repetitive and you feel their authors are just churning out another one. This is not like that! :)
