It was a beautiful morning late in October when Mr. Maurice left his quiet home for the first time for three years, in order to see what good a short period of relaxation might do him. "Ah, Denis," he said, "that is a mournful farewell to me. I wish I could have stayed over next week, but I should not be able to do much. Denis promised to do his best, and then turned away to see after the luggage; but as soon as the train was gone, he went back to the placard, for he had caught a few words that attracted his attention. They were on a smaller paper, close beneath the time table, and the words ran "Liowbridge tea-gardens. "Great Attraction!! "In consequence of the postponement of the Effingham Races, the proprietors of the above gardens have been able to prepare a superior entertainment to any yet given.
