Guinevere #6

The Road to Avalon

Rate this book
Guinevere: wise queen, brave warrior, passionate lover, dedicated mother… savior?

Twenty years have passed since Gwen fell back in time to become King Arthur’s Queen Guinevere. Eight years of comparative peace since the triumph at Badon. All seems quiet and, with Medraut long gone and possibly dead, the prospect of Camlann seems far away and perhaps just another part of the legend that’s not true.

Until Arthur and Gwen go to Viroconium for the Council of Kings and take Amhar, now eighteen, with them. There, he meets up with the very much alive-and-kicking Medraut again, who has not improved with the passage of time. Unable to prevent Amhar inviting Medraut back to Din Cadan with them, Gwen can only watch in fear as events begin to unroll that will lead to the one thing she’s been fearing throughout her time in the Dark Ages – the fateful battle of Camlann.

But before Camlann can rear its ugly head, news comes of the death of old King March of Caer Dore in Cornwall. Arthur, Gwen and their daughter travel west for his funeral rites. Accompanying them is the old king’s son, Drustans, whose one aim is to claim the kingship and reclaim the love of his life, Essylt, who was forced to marry his father instead of him nineteen years ago. But Gwen has seen this warrior’s grave marker in the far off twenty-first century, and she’s afraid this will not end well.

Gwen and Arthur’s love is about to be tested to its absolute limit as Medraut takes on the mantle of chief villain in the story, and all seems lost. The young man’s malevolent influence within the walls of Arthur’s stronghold grows, alienating the younger warriors, and in particular Amhar, from their elders, which is where Arthur finds himself. But when the odds are stacked against her, Gwen is at her strongest, and she’s armed with a foreknowledge no one else possesses.

When the day of Camlann finally arrives, can she prevent the tragedies that threaten to unfold and change the course of history and legend? Can she find the road to Avalon for Arthur?

AWARD-WINNING author, Fil Reid's first novel won a GOLD medal at the Readers' Favorites Awards in 2022.

Fil lives in Cornwall with her extremely supportive husband and where she's only minutes from the sea. She has a rescue dog from Romania called Bella.

She writes historical fiction and has a six book time travel series, GUINEVERE, out in which the heroine is a 21st-century girl kidnapped back to the Dark Ages to become King Arthur's Queen Guinevere. Lots of fun plot twists mixed in with some of the well-known and also the lesser known legends.

Her poor husband mostly sees the back of her head as she sits at the computer writing.
When she's not writing (which she does pretty much all of the time) she likes to walk the dog, visit sites of historical interest (preferably those connected to her writing), read, and sew.

She has Asperger's Syndrome, but she sees that as a plus as it helps her to be very focused on what she does.

The Road to Avalon by Fil Reid is the final chapter for Arthur and Gwen as Reid brings the saga to a close. She does it by maintaining the legend’s accuracy (as far as one can with a legend) but with plenty of tragedy and tears on the parts of everyone involved, including the reader. All the wickedness of Morgana, and more, has been passed on to Metraud as he lies and manipulates to usurp Arthur’s kingship. People Gwen has known since they were children are now grown man (happens to all of us) and all loyal to her. She has made friends nearly everywhere she has gone and that friendship has been rewarded. I can’t give much of a summary as there are spoilers galore, but leave it to say, this ended as I would have wanted it to, a fitting end to a glorious saga.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of The Road to Avalon by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #FilReid #TheRoadToAvalon

In the sixth volume of the time travel romance Guinevere series, it is now twenty years since Gwen first entered the Dark Ages. Gwen’s children Amhar and Archfedd are teenagers, and their dislikeable cousin Medraut is now an adult warrior. Gwen worries that Arthur’s legendary last battle, Camlann, may be approaching. With Medraut and the scheming Morgana involved, one just knows it is going to end badly…
A lot happens in this book. A funeral for old King March of Caer Dore ends tragically. Amhar’s jealousy of his older half-brother Llacheu is encouraged by Medraut, and Gwen finds herself unable to stop the progress of events toward the final battle. The prologue and epilogue of this book however come as a distinct surprise.
This book maintains the standard of the previous volumes, with unexpected events and with the locations and the details of dark age life described in convincing and well-researched detail. A gripping read.

Uncaged Review: The final installment in this series left me with many emotions, and it’s an ending befitting of the series. It’s been 20 years since Gwen first traveled back to medieval times, and in this book, everything will be answered. Here Morgana makes her last stand, and pits Arthur and Gwen against each other and their children. A murder, an innocent wrongly accused and a deadly enemy within their ranks. And Camlann is upon them, not as Gwen thought it would be, but a battle that may end Arthur. The Road to Avalon is not always an easy road, and not well marked.

This is a great series, and one I plan on buying the physical copies for my shelves, and I don’t say that often. This is a great retelling, and this book will tear at your heartstrings and have you glued to the pages. I’ll probably take a couple of days and let this series sink in before starting on another book, I read this series straight through, and I haven’t done that in a long time. Reviewed by Cyrene

This is the end of this incredible saga. And what a journey it has been following Gwen and Arthur tale
of love, adventures and sacrifices. All of it with a sprinkle of realism and a lot of magic. This book delves into the hardest truth of all: sometimes our fiercest enemies are those closest to us. Even though, this is a story about a mythical king and his kingdom, we can all identify with its tale of family disputes, manipulation and lies; all of it culminating with battles that are both literal and figurative, and it stands as a metaphor for what makes us humans no matter the time period we live in: the power of love and hope prevail even in the darkest moments. The resolution came and it hit me as a bittersweet, happy ending: emotional and powerful.
Can’t wait to read Fil Reid’s other series!

Brilliant....absolutely brilliant. As I knew I would be, I was so sad to see the end of this series but being the last book of the series, it was a doozie! Not one dull moment and I swear I used half a box of tissues, I was off and on in tears.

Guinevere and Arthur face their hardest challenges and some you wonder if they'll ever recover from them, my heart hurt so badly for them. I love the way the author brought everything together, though, and how the prophecy unfolded. Again, well written and the historical background is the best I've read in a long time.

Now I want to go visit all the places related to King Arthur!!!!

The final episode of the six-book Guinevere series fulfills the promise of the earlier volumes. Reid pulls no punches in presenting the terrible events of the Arthurian climax; Gwen’s love for Arthur is tested as never before. Yet the tale, while wrenching, reaches out to an eminently satisfying conclusion. In a final tour de force that’s simply brilliant, Reid finds a way to reconcile the tragic and the romantic elements of the myth. I highly recommend the series for anyone who loves the Arthuriad and any reader of epic fantasy.

gripping!

Having read the entire series, I was delighted that this final book was such a page turner. My wife and I have read these books before bed each night and some nights we were so involved in the story that we stayed up a bit later than intended. There is something for everyone in these books: magic, romance, epic battles, and time travel. I heartily recommend this book and the whole series!

I truly loved this series. It evoked so many emotions ranging for elation to fear to sorrow. This last book especially was a suspenseful roller coaster of emotion like none other I’ve ever read. Fans of the series, I hope, will be as satisfied as I was by the end although I could have read twenty more books about Gwen’s adventures.

I loved Gwen and Arthur's relationship and am excited to see what the author does next. I received an ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I've always loved Arthurian legend. These books bring Arthur and Guinevere to life for me. I like the way Fil Reid has used the legend but still make the stories seem real. I especially love the ending and Avalon. Great books I will read again.

I've read all the books in this series, and this final installment wrapped everything up very satisfyingly. Gwen has lived in the past as King Arthur's queen for twenty years now, and Arthur's final battle has finally arrived. She's dreaded it for all this time while not knowing if it's legend or will really happen, and in this final chapter everything falls together perfectly. I loved the ending, which completely surprised me. This series is so full of detail and so realistic that I've felt I was right there in the Dark Ages with Gwen for all those years, and I am really going to miss her and Arthur and Merlin now it's over!
