Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who is best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit.

Born into a wealthy household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets, and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developed a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.

In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit and became secretly engaged to her publisher, Norman Warne, causing a breach with her parents, who disapproved of his social status. Warne died before the wedding.

Potter eventually published 24 children's books, the most recent being The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots (2016), and having become financially independent of her parents, was able to buy a farm in the Lake District, which she extended with other purchases over time.

In her forties, she married a local solicitor, William Heelis. She became a sheep breeder and farmer while continuing to write and illustrate children's books. Potter died in 1943 and left almost all of her property to The National Trust in order to preserve the beauty of the Lake District as she had known it, protecting it from developers.

Potter's books continue to sell well throughout the world, in multiple languages. Her stories have been retold in various formats, including a ballet, films, and in animation.

4.5 "baby boy treasure " stars !!

2016 Honorable Mention

As a young boy I had the whole set of these books and almost every night from the ages of three to six I would choose one and mama or papa or auntie would read this to me until the age of four and a half or so when I would read it to them. They hold a very special place in my heart as they represent comfort, bonding and a warm feeling of contentment.

I was pleased to revisit these lovely stories with beautiful illustrations and I will simply write an impressionistic sentence or two about each one.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit (Rabbit Ears) by Beatrix Potter Oh dear Peter Rabbit- I want to squeeze you and your sisters oh so tight.

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Beatrix Potter Poor silly Squirrel Nuttkin that lost half his tail.

The Tailor of Gloucester (Rabbit Ears) by Beatrix Potter Sweet little mice and a naughty repentant kitty.

The Tale of Benjamin Bunny by Beatrix Potter Benjamin you are as cute as your cousin Peter Rabbit.

The Tale of Two Bad Mice by Beatrix Potter Mice and dollies having oh so much fun.

The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter Hedgehogs are the most polite of housekeepers.

The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan by Beatrix Potter A kitty, a doggie and a magpie make for a crazy tea party. This one is my favorite :)

The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher (Rabbit Ears) by Beatrix Potter Froggy Jeremy will never go fishing again.

The Story of A Fierce Bad Rabbit by Beatrix Potter Hurrah both bunnies are safe!!

The Story of Miss Moppet by Beatrix Potter Miss Moppett you are extremely silly.

The Tale of Tom Kitten by Beatrix Potter Kittens and duckies should not wear clothes.

The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck by Beatrix Potter Jemima the puddle-duck is a silly neurotic and needs psychoanalysis and to stay away from sexi foxes.

The Tale of Samuel Whiskers, or The Roly-Poly Pudding by Beatrix Potter I would always avoid this one. It terrified me. Rats going to cook kittens into a pie :(

The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies by Beatrix Potter Mr. McGregor is such a goof trying to catch the bunnies.

The Tale of Ginger and Pickles by Beatrix Potter Another favorite. This kitty and doggie gave way too much credit and lost it all.

The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse by Beatrix Potter A mouse with a cleaning fetish and many uninvited guests.

The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes by Beatrix Potter Squirrels have happy marriages whereas chimpmunks do not.

The Tale of Mr. Tod by Beatrix Potter Beatrix was damn angry when she wrote this one.

The Tale of Pigling Bland by Beatrix Potter Piggies going to and fro and avoiding becoming bacon or jambon.

Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes (World of Beatrix Potter) by Beatrix Potter Fun and silly little rhymes.

The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse by Beatrix Potter Country folk and city folk do not always mix.

Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rhymes by Beatrix Potter Sounds very familiar :)

It was an absolute comfort and joy to revisit these lovely tales !!

What a treat! I wish that I had had this collection when my children were young. We had a few of the Beatrix Potter books, but certainly not all of the stories here. I also like the fact that there’s a map at the beginning of the book. I love books with maps. This collection is simply charming. The illustrations and stories are delightful. At the beginning of each story, I enjoyed learning something about Beatrix Potter and how that particular story came to be.

I loved everything about this. The stories were charming. The illustrations so pretty and it was a delight spending my mornings with Beatrix Potter’s delightful work. Many of the stories I hadn’t read before which was an added treat. So happy to have this book in my collection.

I think we all love Beatrix Potter

It is amazing to have the entire collection of her stories here. I find it cathartic to read simple children's stories before bed you see. I'd even named my chihuahua after Peter Rabbit, the misfit who's misfit adventures in Mr MacGregor's gardens led to many an exciting tale. Even when he lost it! The tail, lol
Some of the stories are better than others as each animal is dressed as a self important character of 1800 England you see.
Take it for the fun that will ensue. Live a little and smell the flowers, gardens and cooking that unfolds in these tales. Enjoy! Murf

This book is just charming--both the author's illustrations and the text. She is able to anthropomorphize the lives of little creatures in nature and their adventures and misadventures in the world of huge human figures. The drawings of bunnies in little shoes and clogs are just precious in the best sense. This is a great book to fall asleep reading. It is hugely calming and embracing and allows readers to participate in the author's wonderfully detailed fantasy world. The stories are timeless and appeal to all ages, but are mandatory reading for little children.

Worth it for the illustrations.

As a child I’m fairly sure I only read a tiny fraction of Beatrix Potter’s books - Peter Rabbit for sure. But I picked up the omnibus somewhere for cheap or free and have been reading it very slowly for over a year.

The illustrations are wonderful, so lifelike, but with clothes! The characters get into such scrapes and their antics ring true because they are similar to their wild cousin’s.

The stories themselves are often exceedingly dull and go on way too long. Some are gems though.

Besides Peter Rabbit, my favorites were… TBA

One of the things I liked about this collection of Beatrix Potter stories, rhymes, and paintings is that before each there is text explaining a bit about the story such as when it was written, what was going on in her life at the time it was written, etc.

While a lot of these stories I remember hearing as a child there were also a decent number I hand not read before. Some stories were a bit nonsensical or absurd, though, maybe that is part of the point of those? It was also interesting to see what was considered appropriate for children in the early 1900s compared to today.

Even though I didn't love all the stories and rhymes, seeing all the lovely paintings and drawings by Potter was a delight. Though some of the stories kept me so pulled in I didn't want to look at the drawing in detail until later because I just wanted to find out the ending of that story.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are words or things that are no longer in popular use today that come up in some of the stories. While it rarely impacts the understanding of the story, there was one in which not knowing what something was did make it quite confusing.

Original illustrations!

It always angers me to see Beatrix Potter books without the original illustrations, so I’m very happy to report that these are the original watercolor illustrations and line drawings for Potter’s complete works. What a bargain for 99 cents! Beatrix Potter is a treasure!
Highly recommend this edition.

with each story, I think Beatrix’s works aren’t such a living classic, whatever lessons are in her books, it doesn’t match today’s world. some stories were very sweet, it’s just that the majority held meanings and morals I don’t lean towards. Maybe it was groundbreaking on her days, but it’s for sure not something to give a child to [unintentionally] get inspired by in present society.

The artwork though, is so creative and charming. I always love to observe old paintings, it gives me such lovely, tender feelings that I cannot put into words. there’s something about glamorous, moving art by deceased artists that makes it so unique to me.

"I am almost inclined to set it up as a canon that a children's story which is enjoyed only by children is a bad children's story. The good ones last." - C.S. Lewis

This volume brought me back to my childhood, where the first place I went to in the school library was the shelf that held all those little white books. They were about rabbits, cats, dogs, squirrels, foxes and other animals; as well as life in the woods, the country, or even out to sea! It also tells me just how timeless Beatrix's works were. Her stories were also enjoyed by my hero, C.S. Lewis. His words echoed through my mind as I read each of these stories, for I enjoy them just as much now, if not more than when I first discovered them as a child.

This collection gave me the chance to not only read my favorites again, but also stories that I never did read, and even ones that were never published! This volume is a great addition to any library. Like all great children's stories, it's meant to be read again and again.

This was extremely cute and all, not to mention free on Amazon at the time I got it, but I definitely recommend taking a break between each story, otherwise you'll get bored.
Beatrix Potter's stories are too well known for me to even mention anything more about them, but if you never heard of her and her books, then you must really check this out. The illustrations are fantastic and the stories will make you feel nostalgic about your childhood. Or even better, read it to your younger siblings or kids. :)

Charming stories, lovely illustrations, and great vocabulary. Scott followed along well but definitely didn’t grasp 100% of each story, which I’m not sad about because that just means we’ll need to read it again next year and maybe the year after that too. Also bought the audiobook narrated by Jim Weiss and it’s fantastic!!!

After watching "Miss Potter" recently on Amazon Prime, I found my interest in Beatrix Potter's artwork rekindled. And now my Kindle is rekindled, too! For $2.99, a mere snip of a price, I've re-enjoyed stories I grew up with - and read some I'd never stumbled across. Be sure to enjoy this collection on a decent tablet or computer. A Paperwhite simply can't do the illustrations justice.

Better yet, spring for the hardcover edition and share it with any small children you might know. At $20, it's absolutely worth every penny.

Not my son’s favorite, but I thought the stories were charming. My only complaint was I just don’t feel these were written for young children, even though everyone seems to say it’s for “all ages”. Perhaps I started too young with him, but there was a lot of old Englishy type jargon/ story lines. For example, I had to explain to him what a fortnight, tailor, pence, etc. Some of that is good but I felt like it was a lot for us. It made the read more like work than fun which wasn’t what I was hoping for.

This large format collection isn't ideal in some ways. I do prefer the smaller individual books for reading and sharing with children. But the rating is for Potter's overall body of work which is incredible and not to be missed. I think my favorite tale of all is The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. Such humor, such pathos!

As with any tome, the stories here vary widely in quality. It was well worth the $2.99 that I had paid for it for a copy on Kindle.

Potter’s books are very relatable to children as animals are imagined to have their own lives, which is an extension of children’s own imaginations. All the stories interlink as well which helps to get an overall idea of the different characters.
Some of the language is quite old, and younger children may not necessarily understand. However the text would be good to introduce new vocabulary to children and develop skills for looking up complex language using dictionaries and thesauruses.
The stories would be good to link to science lessons and animals and their habitats, this could lead to interesting discussions surrounding why the animals in the stories wear clothes and have houses.

The likelihood of me picking this back up again to read is pretty slim due to not enough time. There's not enough time in my sometimes hectic lifestyle to read books I really want to read so trying to read something I'm only half interested in is too much of a challenge for me. I do love Peter rabbits tale though just wasn't aware of how many books were in this collection. It's a nice freebie though and the illustrations were lovely also. It was definitely one of the better free kindle books I have come across.

It was good to read all the stories, but the quality is somewhat mixed. There are great ones like Peter Rabbit, but there are other ones that seemed to make no sense at all. By that, I don't mean to me as an adult, but even to children - I couldn't imagine reading some of these to my own kids, in particular the Tale of Ginger and Pickles. But the majority of them were good, and, of course, the illustrations were outstanding. She was an amazing illustrator, and even in stories I didn't care for as much the drawings were spectacular.
