American Crescent: A Muslim Cleric on the Power of His Faith, the Struggle Against Prejudice, and the Future of Islam and America

In this inspiring narrative, one of this country’s most important Muslim leaders reveals the story of his life and his faith, and why Islam is good for America. As the religious leader of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan, Imam Hassan Qazwini serves the largest Muslim congregation in the United States. His dramatic journey to these shores began in 1971, when his father’s anti-Baathist views forced his family to flee from Saddam’s Iraq to Kuwait and then to war-torn Iran. Then, in 1992, with his father’s blessing, he left for the United States, a place where young Muslims were seeking spiritual guidance and where his children could grow up in the peace Qazwini had been denied.

First in California and then in Michigan, Qazwini saw a shocking new world in which leaders were openly mocked, women’s bodies were on display in public, and Christian symbols were disparaged without consequence. He also saw a land in which the lack of a common faith necessitated a great effort to create a shared community. By counseling American Muslims–and sharing his religion with those of other beliefs–he came to feel at home in the country he already loved, and he became a trusted advisor to local and national politicians.

Then, after 9/11, Osama bin Laden gave him “a new full-time job.”
American Crescent vividly describes Qazwini’s efforts to show Americans how those who destroyed the World Trade Center had hijacked Islam as well, and that most Muslims were appalled by their actions. Yet he also takes the Bush administration to task for championing the prejudicial Patriot Act (after Muslims supported George W. Bush in the 2000 election) and deplores its conduct in the Iraq War.

Throughout American Crescent , Qazwini offers a revelatory look at the tenets and history of Islam, defending it as a faith of peace and diversity, and challenging stereotypes and misconceptions promulgated by the media. Iran, he points out, has a higher percentage of women in its parliament than the United States does in both houses of Congress. “If you want to learn about Islam,” he writes, “turn off the TV.”

At once a fascinating personal story and a heartfelt plea to integrate Islamic teachings into the tolerant traditions of America, this book is an important contribution to our understanding of all those who live among us, at a time when it matters most.

أنصح الجميع بقراءته بلا تردد ، كتاب شيق و به قصص مذهلة ، سأعيد قراءته مرة أخرى بلا شك ، أختلف مع بعض الجزئيات البسيطة في ما طُرح في الكتاب و لكن بشكل عام هو كتاب ثري و راااائع

كتاب جميل فأنا تعجبني الكتب التي تتحدث عن تجارب الحياة و هذا الكتاب يتحدث عن امر مهم و تحليل قوي و واقع ينبغي له الحديث عنه و بالذات انه يتحدث عن حركة الاسلام و المسلمين في الغرب و حياتهم و كيفية تعاملهم مع دينهم و المختلفين معهم هناك و ما هي الارهاصات التي يعيشون فيها بين واقع الحياة الطبيعية و رسالتهم الدينية التي يتعاطون معها بحيث يحافظون على دينهم و يمارسون اسلوب الدعوة له ,,,

و ايضا يطرح الكتاب الجنبة الثقافية و السلوكية للاجانب في الغرب و مخالفتهم لابده بديهيات الاخلاص في نسبة ليست بالبسيطة و هذا كله بسبب الابتعاد عن القيم و الاخلاق و اعتبار الدين امر ثانوي ,,

و قد طرح المؤلف ايضاً نباذج كثيرة لانواع الناس في الغرب و العلاقة مع السياسة و السياسيين و كيف يتحرك كل صنف بما يحمل من اهداف و استقطاب لعلاقته مع السياسة التي تديره او يرفغب في اتباعها ,,,

كتاب جميل جداً و سريع القراءة و عظيم الفائدة .

Imam Qazwini’s American Crescent celebrates the true teachings of Islam as delivered through the Prophet Muhammad’s message of peace and tolerance. Qazwini points out how Islam is an Abrahamic faith that shares the same background as Judaism and Christianity and how Muslims regard Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad as prophets. Islam, therefore, is a logical extension of Judaism and Christianity, both of which paved the way for Muslims and the newer testament of the Quran. Qazwini outlines how all three faiths encompass the same universal values of human decency. They also agree on love for God and respect for parents, neighbors, and self. Qazwini explains that Islam places the good of the community as the highest priority, and all people must be treated as equals before God, making every individual entitled to human rights. Jews and Christians have always been held in high regard under Islam, and only those who wish to oppose Islam are considered outsiders. Qazwini’s book also serves as contemporary commentary on Islam’s status with other religions and on the challenges Muslims face in adapting traditional practices to align with the principles of freedom and democracy. In capturing the open-mindedness of his faith, Qazwini makes clear that the violent extremists who exploit the true message of Islam do not represent true Muslims. Qazwini is the spiritual leader of the Muslim community at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan. كثيرٌ من الأمور متعلقة بالإسلام في الغرب قد تكونُ غائبةً عن أذهاننا. بعضها يغيبُ لأنه مطمور، والبعض الآخر لأنه لا تأتي مناسبة تحث على البحث عنه.
في هذا الكتاب الصغير يستعرض حسن القزويني حقائق مهمة عن الوجود الإسلامي في الغرب وفي أميركا تحديداً، ويذكر الكثير من المعلومات عن العدد والإنتشار للمسلمين، وعن طبيعة تعاطيهم مع الشأن الديني ومدى التزامهم.
بعض الحقائق قد تكون إنعكاساً للتمدن العميق، وقد نكون نعيش جزءً منها حتى في عالمنا العربي الإسلامي، ولكنها أوضح وأعمق هناك في الغرب نتيجة الإنصهار الإجتماعي والثقافي.

مؤاخذتي الوحيدة على الكاتب هي ذكره أسماء محددة في معرض الإنتقاد. قد يكون الأمر مقبولاً جداً، بل ومفيد أيضاً لو لم يكن الكاتب داعية ومحسوب على فئة العلماء.. ولكن كونه كذلك قد يشوب الأمر بعض الخلل الذي لا مجال للتفصيل فيه.

أخيراً، أنصح بشدة بقراءة هذا الكتاب، وخصوصاً للمغتربين وحتى شبابنا المتنعمين بدفءِ أوطانهم ممن ركبوا قطار الحضارة وصارت أفكارهم تستوي على نارٍ هادئة .. لعل بعض ما ورد في الكتاب يسهم ولو بشيء يسير في تجانس هذه الأفكار لعبور محطات هذا القطار بسلام دون التأثير على المسلمات الدينية بدعوى الإنصهار والحداثة.

As I am not fond of religious dogma, there was plenty that I did not enjoy about this book. However, reading it did contribute to a better understanding of Islam, especially the historical aspects of Islam, including the split between the Shia and Sunni. Mostly, I came to understand how this particular Iraqi-American Muslim man - Hassan Qazwini - views his faith, his roots, the political conflicts in the Middle East, his new life in the U.S., and his role here as a religious leader. Being an immigrant to the U.S. and having met with powerful U.S. politicians, the author has had many interesting experiences and insights. I appreciate his openness, courage, and his sharing his life with the reader.

مؤلف الكتاب هو السيد حسن بن السيد مرتضى القزويني، إمام المركز الإسلامي في مدينة ديربورن، ولا ميتشغن الأمريكية.

يسرد السيد في هذا الكتاب تجربته الشخصية في أمريكا، الدعوة للإسلام في المجتمع الأمريكي وأهم العقبات، كما يعطي صورة عن معالم المجتمع الأمريكي، المسلمين في أمريكا، و المسلمين الشيعة بشكل خاص.

قد أختلف مع الكاتب في بعض النقاط، ولكن الكتاب جدير بالقراءة خصوصا للشباب المبتعثين للدول الغربية.

رغم تحفظي على الك��تب .. إلا ان الكتاب كطرح قيم ويحتوي على صورة توضح واقع المجتمع الاسلامي في أمريكا والبيئة المحيطة به ..
الكاتب يلفت النظر الى أمراض مزمنة تنتشر في الجيل المعاصر للمسلمين في الغرب .. وان كان كثير من نفس الامراض منتشرة في العالم العربي وربما بصور أكثر جهل وأكثر فتكا بالمجتمع ..
ويصف أيضا مداخل الدعوة الممكنة في الدول الاجنبية في المحور السياسي والثقافي والاجتماعي ، ويضع تصورا للعلاقات الاسلاميةبالمحيط الخارجي ..
أعجبني طرحه لدور المرأة في المجتمع المسلم ..
فقط بعض الصفحات المعدودة التي لا أتفق مع الكاتب في طرحها ..
في مجمله كتاب جيد ومفيد ..

This autobiography by a Shia Muslim cleric born in Iraq, educated in Iran and living and working in Michigan fascinated me. It is the only statement of faith in English I have encountered by a Shia Imam and it is an eloquent and thought-provoking book.

Qazwini provides a respectful account of his adjustment into American culture, giving helpful insights to Shia/Sunni/Wahabbi relations, the disconnect between American culture and religion, and Middle Eastern context to American foreign policies.

Any one, especially an American, that is nervous about Islam and the supposed threat it brings to Americans will benefit much from hearing this from "the horse's mouth." Imam Qazwini is a peaceful patriot of the United States and explains well the true manner of Islam.
