Balls: Delicious Round Food
If you’re like most, a smirk might come to your lips when you hear the word––and though we enjoy the tickle of the provocative title––rest assured that this is a serious cookbook.
My niece, Gail, and I decided to create this book partly because our family lore often revolves around my mother’s cooking. Martha was the quintessential frugal cook––a necessity when preparing meals for four rambunctious boys with big appetites. Her most famous dishes involved her sweeping the refrigerator for whatever it may hold, and turning what she found into croquettes––a lofty name for some pretty basic fare. Nevertheless, these crispy and delicious balls were always a hit (except for most notably that one time with tripe…). But beyond great taste and a full stomach, what her signature meals gave us was a sense of comfort and love. To this day balls make me happy, and always bring a smile.
So with this inspiration in mind, we combined Gail’s talents as a food blogger, food photographer, professional cake baker, and recipe tester, with my passion for delectable round bites.
We took the approach of offering up traditional dishes, such as matzoh ball soup and Swedish meatballs, alongside a few fun innovations. Most of the recipes here are straightforward and easy to prepare. There are balls that are great for Game Day as well as some that are elegant enough for elevated occasions. We tried to include something for everyone, kids included.
Our biggest hope is that you'll find new recipes to add flavor to your family moments, and that this book becomes not only a household staple, but one you share with friends.
After all, food is love, and gathering is fun, and there is nothing more fun than Balls!
