Looks like I'm the only person on this website to read this book, haha!
I acquired a taste for silent films and an appreciation for Chaplin's movies in the past year. I thus also want to better understand him given the distance between myself now and the silent film era. The author in this book argues that Chaplin can and should be taken seriously as a poet of comedic film. Kimber's focus is on the poetry he sees in Chaplin's comedy itself, particularly focusing on the "clown" tradition that Chaplin was a part of. I think Kimber successfully makes his point. As always with film studies, I feel that you really need to watch the movies yourself before you read about them and so I was most keen to see his analysis of the ones I'd already seen. His is an approach I've not encountered before.
