I have been anxiously awaiting this seventh book in Jodi Burnett’s Tin Star K9 Series and can honestly say that it lives up to my expectations. Trials is filled with emotional family tension as well as the urgent, but dangerous, effort to find Caitlyn’s missing dog, Renegade.
The author does a wonderful job of bringing her reader into the middle of this story. It is not a long book, but I expected to read part of it in the morning and finish it later in the day. That did not happen…I became so engrossed in the book that I kept reading right through to the end. My heart ached for Colt and Caitlyn as they faced both family matters and the search for her beloved working companion.
Trials can be read and enjoyed as a standalone, but I think that also reading at least the book immediately preceding this one may help the reader develop a more comprehensive understanding of the major characters.
Since I have read many of her other books, I happily accepted an early copy from the author with no promise requested or made of a positive review. This book did not disappoint me and I am now anxiously awaiting the next one in this series. I have also purchased a copy to keep in my personal library.
Trials is one of Jodi Burnett's best so far! All of her books are wonderful, but the continuing saga of Caitlyn, Colt, and Renegade continues to get more and more intriguing. Follow Caitlyn as she searches for her K9 dog Renegade and runs into dangerous dog fighters who are also into the drug scene. I highly recommend this book for all dog lovers who love adventure and intrigue.
Caitlyn likes dogs, but she loves her dog. Life has come to an end when Renegade is stolen. The rest of the world does not seem as fearful as this situation. But Catie is stubborn and that is not a good combination for the events which happen to her, some of the worst possible situations and not a time to be off balance.
There is lots of action. The police are pulled in and the reader is pulled along for the ride as they do what they can do best. The ASPCA is pulled in and they do what they do best.
It's not just people but dogs and horses and the love they share. All are lovingly wrapped together. A preteen being a typical preteen captures scenes and will surely appeal to your heart. All who love dogs and horses and the people who provide for them will enjoy the read of this book.
Trials starts off with Caitlyn Reed waking up in the hospital after surviving a terrible vehicle accident. Another vehicle slams into the passenger side of the car Caitlyn and her husband were in. Since she was in the passenger side of the car she received the brunt of the personal damage, with a concussion and one other side effect. Her husband Colt only suffered some minor cuts and scrapes. There were just starting to look for Caitlyn's partner, K9 Officer Renegade, who they believe was dog-napped when the accident took place. While looking for Renegade Caitlyn comes across a possible dog fighting ring by the person believed to be the person who rammed his truck into the car that Caitlyn and Colt were in at the beginning of the book.
While Caitlyn and Colt stay in Scottsdale looking for Renegade the story line of Caitlyn's family, become more interlocked with Caitlyn and Colt's story aligned on several fronts. Since Colt was not available to take his son Jace for the weekend plans are made for Jace to spend the time at the Reeds ranch.. On the ranch Jace becomes friendly with a rescue dog that may be dangerous, since it had attack another dog. Jace also learns how the Reed children grew up on the ranch. We also learn that Colt's ex-wife and Caitlyn's ex-boyfriend may affect everyone else in a way that is not expected.
The book continues to unfold the story lines about Caitlyn and Renegade, the Reed Ranch, Colt's divorce from Jace's mother, Caitlyn's relationship from her previous boyfriend and a few other small story lines that may become bigger ones in future books. All in all a great read in the continuing Tin Star K9 Series of books.
This is book 7 of the Tin Star K9 series involving husband and wife team, Caitlyn and Colt, who deeply invested in finding Renegade who they believe was stolen. From page one, you are taken in to drama as an unexpected accident occurs. As the couple’s investigation moves forward, strong independent Caitlyn is working with a few limitations which of course does not stop her. I enjoy her stubborn, resilient character, and yet still see her vulnerable side. The author does an excellent job in showing the couple’s strengths, and that they still have insecurities and a lack of trust.
In addition, Ms Burnett does an excellent job in weaving throughout their story another subplot involving the Reed family on their ranch. These characters have had their own books, but here they play a pivotal role as supporting cast. They remain a very tight knit family, and more progress occurs in their lives for some characters in this story. Also, a small amount of time is spent in the story with another developing couple, that when secrets are revealed, it will bring an explosive amount of emotions for a lot of characters. I understand the point of these characters, but I truly dislike them. And that is not because they are written poorly, it’s because they are written so well, my instant urge is to dislike them. I was engaged from page one, and disappointed when I finished the book so quickly. I am excited about the next book in the series. I received a complimentary ARC, but I am voluntarily offering my personal opinion.
I once read that your own personal feelings should not affect an honest review. For that reason I have to give Trials 5 stars. It is a fast paced suspenseful, emotional page turner. It is not a long book and packs a wallop. Family, past ties, dog fighting, trust and lack there of all take place. I have loved this series and in Trials while searching for Renegade(K9) Colt(Sheriff) and Caitlyns (US Marshall) chapters are interspersed with her parents, her brother and sister in law, Colts son (Jace) and with Blake the only doc in town who once dated Caitlyn and is still in love with her. You are sucked in on page 1 and each chapter has a lot going on. The plot of missing Renegade is resolved, however we are left with questions regarding the rest. That is my honest review. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
My own personal opinion is frustration with the constant angst going on with Colt and Caitlyn. Some of it I understand as a plot line, but they can be a fantastic duo without all angst. A little sure, but my word how about a little happiness for them. And Blake, and witchy Allison Arghh.
All that being said, I also purchased this book and will be purchasing the next one too, even knowing from the premise its going to be angst laden.
Those of you who follow my review know that I’m an avid Jodi Burnett fan. I have read and reviewed every book that she has written, and the one thing that I can say unequivocally is that she never disappoints. Like a fine vintage wine, her stories improve with age. Her books are or everyone, from the romantic to the adrenaline jockey, her stories cover all the bases. If you enjoy thrillers that mirror real life, Jodi Burnett’s thriller series are a must read for you.
Trials pick up where Qualified, the Tin Star K-9 mid series prequel ended with Caitlyn and Colt in the hospital after their car accident and K-9 Renegade still missing after being dognapped. Like all of Jodi’s books, this one is solid action from the first page to the last. With Qualified the action is pretty well balanced between finding and taking down the people who took Renegade, and the interpersonal drama on the home front. Both are intense enough to keep you turning the pages and the cliffhanger ending is enough to make you pre-order the next book in the series Spec Ops K-9. Qualified has more unexpected twists, turns than a rattlesnakes trail across the desert sands. More surprises than a box of Cracker-Jacks. Jodi will have me on tether hooks until I get Spec Ops K-9 in my inbox.
'Trials' was riveting from the moment I began reading. The thrilling plot began with a jolt of Renegade's dognapping and with Catie and Colt in the hospital. Moreover, the plot focused on Renegade's whereabouts, who dognapped him and the reason, if Catie and Colt would recover from their loss, Colt's anger over Catie's carelessness, how Blake could possibly be happy with Allison, John's concerns about the way his son Dylan is managing and working on the family's ranch, if Allison would let Jace live with his dad and Catie, when McKenzie and Bylan would have their big reveal, if Catie and Colt would have their big talk, and if Colt and Blake could ever get along. Enthusiastically, I read the book in one sitting. There was intrigue, suspense, action, family dynamics, anger, jealousy, bonding, and a busybody's antics. Most of the concerns that the plot focused on were not finalized in this book. I wanted to know how the book would end. Overall, the author created a tense tone with the vivid details she provided. Additionally, I liked the storyline, but I was a little disappointed since it lacked an ending. I received a copy for free and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
I’ve read or listened to the seven books of the Tin Star series and enjoyed each of the books. Trials, was filled with more dramatic content than the normal action type content of its predecessors. The redeeming feature for me in this story was the introduction of Storm and the relationship of Storm and Jace.
This is not to say there isn’t any action in the story, because there are several instances of action that play an important part in the overall story. For me I would have loved more action and a bit less interpersonal drama.
Overall, Trials is an enjoyable story, and with Joyce Oben’s excellent narration and her character voices it is very entertaining.
I’m glad you brought this to the forefront. There are so many people that are unaware that it goes on in their community wealthy or poor. I don’t understand how anyone could find this entertaining but as the book mentions, it’s all about the money. If you see something report it to the authorities and your local shelters - and donate. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next one. The different characters are flawlessly weaved into the storyline. If you like strong female characters and love animals you’ll love her books. I didn’t accomplish a lot today as I couldn’t put it down.
Audiobook: I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster ride while listening to the audiobook for book 7. Wow! I admired Caitlyn's determination to find Renegade regardless of how much the search took out of herself. I grieved with Colt's and Caitlyn's loss. I worried about what was happening with Renegade. I was flabbergasted that the story ended on a cliffhanger, and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I was entertained by Joyce Oben's narration, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.
Great dogs, good morals, mostly people with good hearts. As this is book seven, which we had to wait for and book eight not available yet I do have to say that I was disappointed that book six was such a big cliff hanger and this one is too. Even reading the beginning of this one made me want to go back and re-read the previous book ending. Book six and seven are also super short, could have been one book. I'm not a author so I'm just complaining. When you find such good writing with good people and good dogs you just want more. So thanks, but...
Too much focus on the people! I love this ongoing story and this series, but in this book, I missed the exciting scenes of Renegade saving the day, striving to do his job and protecting those around him. Of course, that may have been part of the point of this book--everyone is fallible. If you care about these characters, this may be a painful read, but it's also an exciting new piece of their story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
When Kaitlyn and her loyal partner, Renegade are involved in a hit, abduct and run, Kaitlyn is severely injured and her loss is unimaginable. Not only is Renegade missing but her body is missing a different kind of loss that many mothers never recover from. On the lookout for her partner Kaitlyn ever stubborn, wants to join the search for her partner. After being refused hospital release she is forced to stay in hospital for another day. Read what happens when Kaitlyn doesn’t go down without a fight.
Caitlyn’s K9 partner, Renegade, has been stolen and Caitlyn and her husband, Colt, will do anything to bring him home safe and sound. The search puts them in danger as well, and not just from whoever is holding Renegade. There is some tension between Caitlyn and Colt, and a few problems at home.
I loved this book! We’re left with questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The 2 books were riveting to say the least! Thru the series you fell like a part of the family. Renegade and stubborn Caitlyn, her brothers and parents. When Ren is stolen, then Colt and Cait are purposely broadsided, so many events unfold. Pregnancies, deceit, and with a serious concussion, Cait is still determined to find her K9, Ren. What she finds are the horrors of dog fighting, and just how depraved some ppl are.
Think I've finished with this series. Have read them all including several of the other marshal series. I'm tired of Caitlyn and her attitude. She never learns her lesson and is annoyingly stubborn and ill tempered. Don't see how she can ever develop into a mature character with such a bad attitude. She's more the antagonist than protagonist. Not sure she has any redeeming qualities other than loving Renegade. I'm done.
This is the seventh in the series and I the first in this series I have read. I was offered an opportunity to listen to the audio book and took it based on a previous series I listened to. I found it Caitlyn’s desire to find Renegade intense.
There were plenty of twist, turns, and flips to keep the reader wondering what was happening. I had empathy for both Caitlyn, Colt, and the police department.
I recommend this book, it is a standalone and I was not lost in the story.
Another amazing read from Jodi. I really didn't want to put it down. Colt and Caitlin had to put everything into finding Renegade. As they worked through the clues they had me on the edge of my seat hoping that they would find him soon and that Renegade would be okay. The only part I didn't like was the fact that it ended too soon. Can't wait for the next one in the series.
A hit and run can ruin a life or lives. Theft of something so precious can bring you to your knees. Loss of life can ruin your perspective of life and others. All of these thing and more are wrapped up in this heart wrenching story. Read to find how everyone's lives change in an instant and how recovery hurts.
ARC review. Trials by Jodi Burnett is the next addition to the Tin Stars K9 series. It is fast paced, action packed with unexpected twists and emotionally intense. Colt and Caitlyn and her dog Renegade face unbelievable personal trials as they face a cruel dog fighting ring. Definitely a page turner as I couldn’t put it down until I finished it.
I used to read these for the work done by the K-9s to solve crimes. This time the K-9s are involved in the crime as victims but the story revolves around 6 people who seem to behave more like teenagers than adults. I won't be reading anymore. These should be relabeled as fantasy romance. Sorry to see this series take this turn.
just when it looks good disaster happens. Caitlyn looses her dog her baby and has to do the unthinkable kill a man.
Busy few days for Caitlyn and Colt. They are injured and loose everything. They get drawn into the horrible world of dog fighting trying to find Renegade. So much has happened the world is falling apart for them. Can they find their way?
An emotionally charged read. It was a departure from Renegade being the one that helps save the day to being the one that needs saving. I liked that the author brought attention to the awfulness of dog fighting and the people that work hard to stop it. While there was a good amount of action and danger, I found that there was just too much family drama in this one.
This was a more emotional story than adventure. But with Renegade involved adventure is there. The heart rending emotions ran deep and high. You can feel them in Caitlyn and Colt. Adding Blake to the mix, along with Allison, makes for an explosive combination.
Outstanding series There is always a suspenseful mystery and lots of action and emotions. This is.
This is a great series. There is always a suspenseful mystery, lots of action, and plenty of emotion This series is good for any age because there is no graphic actions and no swearing.
Plenty of thrilling action once again. There are even more chaotic family issue, strange relationship issue. All of this along with more dogs and puupies. Jodi has become one of my favorite authors on the basis of this series. I can't weight for book 8.
Can't put the book down. Caitlyn and Renegade are inseparable. Colt and Have are trying to bond and McKenzie needs to tell her and Dylans secret. Allison has something up her sleeve and causes friction and trouble awaits. A must to read.... What is going on?????t
This was a great audiobook. Caitlyn is heartbroken about the dognapping of her K9 partner Renegade. It’s a race to find him. Colt and Caitlyn have to deal with the multiple crimes that are uncovered, together with the consequences. Riveting (except for unnecessary exploits of Allison). Note: cliffhanger ending…I had to get Book 8.
