A resurgent enemy... Two daughters born of the mist… A Dominion presence on Earth... A devastating attack… A steamy reunion with a former lover...
From best-selling author, D. Ward Cornell, comes the continuing tale of human ingenuity, alien conflict, and one man’s struggle to lead a reluctant world to survival in its first war between worlds.
Nearly a year has passed since Kyle and Alex Wimberly’s daughter, Kayla, was born. She has already begun manifesting the gift of the mist. After two years of silence, the Dominion launch a devastating attack on planet Aarde, killing over one-hundred-thousand Katswiri, the native population. As Kai and Alex retaliate by destroying a Dominion core world, a metal sphere plows through Earth’s atmosphere, making a fiery entry and sending a message.
Kyle Wimberly. We know who you are. We know where you live. We are coming for you, but we will take your wife and your daughter first.
Buckle your seatbelts and get ready for the ride in the exciting next installment in the Echoes of Extinction series.
D. Ward Cornell lives on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. His career as an engineer, consultant, and entrepreneur has taken him all over the world. Many of those places and elements of those cultures are featured in his writing.
Although still dabbling in those fields, his passion now is bring stories to life.
While I really like the idea of the clash of civilizations, humanoid v. arachnoid, the lead character is such a Superman, doing all the WASP male fantasy things, it really annoying. I mean he has emotional turmoil over the fact that he has to sleep with beautiful alien women and still has an affair with the vice president of the US. And did I mention, he is now the POTUS? Come on now! The military background, PhD, millionaire, whose family owns a winery, who is now is the alien killer, and a multi-planet playboy but feels guilty about it. Captain Kirk would be so proud. Let’s not forget about how he gets over his guilt of creating and using a planet destroying weapon and is now on a mission of xenocide. If he is going to start wiping out whole sections of the universe, using black holes and creating a space time tear, can the universe survive? It begs the Jurassic Park question: while the scientists asked to question if we could do it, they never asked if we should? But I am curious how the war with the spiders will end and I’d like to know more about their civilization. The writing is fine, but not sophisticated. It’s an easy read at a dime store novel level. Although I wasn’t sure I would go back to this series, I did and will probably see it through.

I guess you could call them twists and turns, but they're more like getting a better of understanding. We have to handle several dominion incursions. A couple of times we barely get out by transporter before Kyle gets killed, and a couple times Kyle doesn't escape with impunity. One consistency is that he always finds himself in bed with a female. He always proclaims that he's embarrassed but he goes through with it anyway. It's a tough life. I found that reading was interesting. There were some political statements on the conservative side brushed quickly over. I don't feel they were off putting. There is definitely a lot of action to keep one turning the page.
The author is truly amazing in how he is able to use old established hard space opera tropes and techniques in new ways that I’ve always kinda wondered about in the back of my mind but never considered solidifying in such dramatic and imaginative ways. As Skippy (a character in a completely separate Sci fi space opera - a funny one) would say “never bring a starship to a star-gate fight” That sums up the innovative concepts in this series.
I hate authors like this. They create an over powered main character early on then a ruthless take no prisoners protagonist who is he'll bent on taking over the galaxy. Then the main character turns goody two shoes wracked by guilt over the things he has to do so long story short same old same old. Gimme me a villain at least I can understand that. Nobody puts their friends family or significant others at risk of death to save anybody they don't know.
Before I go any further, a word of advice ..... read the first two books of the series. Not doing so will probably lead to a lot of head scratching punctuated with screaming "what the .....". That being said, this book is one heck of a ride. Where else could you find aliens allied with humans, gigantic spaceships, inter galactic battles, AI quasi-humans, horrid creatures whose aim is the extinction of all human/humanoid life in the universe, a mystic cult of women and a winery. Oh, by the way, this is all happening in contemporary time as in right now. This is science fiction on a grand scale. I noted in my previous review of book 1 that this had the feel of a "space opera' and it delivers just that.
This series has been so much fun its cost me a lot of sleep hours but hey I can sleep when I'm dead. This series is really fun and you get attached to the characters. D.Ward Cornell will be on my wish list for books for sure very fun writing and looking forward to the last book in this series. Bravo Don hope to to chat with you soon
I enjoyed seeing developments of Avolene world but disappointed there wasn’t more interaction with Kai’s family in regards to his position as President and developing better relationships with people on Earth to guide and inform him. A little too much bed hopping.
Great three book series looking forward to the next book
The characters continue to develop Kyle Wimberley as the savior of earth against an alien nation. Can’t wait for the next book to come out these books keep me wanting more.
Book 3 delivers on the tension built step by step in books 1 and 2 and expands the scope of the epic answering many of the questions left previously unanswered.
This series continues nicely as the universe expands as does its enemies. Managing Earth as the US President and his new life evolving on Avolene is difficult but supported by his outworldy powers.
Soooo fabulous!! I’ve been engaged totally from the first word. The science is sometimes too much for my brain but I’m comforted by the love that holds so many entities from all over space together. Truly a masterpiece. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Just when you think you know where the story is headed. It changes tempo and speed and direction. An excellent 3rd book in this series. I eagerly look forward to the next book.
