At the end of Book #1 in this series, we read as Cain Killion and Mercy were finally able to get their HEA ending. Book #2 is told not as a sequel but as an alongside novel as we read some crossover in Capturing Fate that was talked about in Fatal Truth like the shootings at the Institute where Mercy was being held and Liz - who was like Cain's maternal figure was killed and where we learned about the Doctor. In Capturing Fate we are introduced to two characters Dolan Watts who is an FBI agent and like the other characters in Abbie's book, he has special abilities that include heat vision and amazing eyesight, and Daughter Dawson who was adopted as a little girl. Both characters never knew their biological parents and had traumatic pasts and are about to learn just how special they are to humanity and a new generation of people. We learn that Dolan was part of an experiment when he was younger and managed to escape and Daughter is the child of a famous serial killer who reminded me of the cult leader at Jonestown. What will happen though when Daughter is kidnapped and the only way for Dolan to get her back is to confront his past and with someone who can easily set him up or kill him? Will the power of love overpower fear? Find out in this twisty science-fiction romantic suspense by Abbie Roads.

Wow, I was so engulfed with this story! It's a taunt, fast-paced, thrilling, twisted read! I loved it!

Dolan Watts is an FBI agent, undercover as a corrections officer looking to find the source of a leak. When he spots a prison psychiatrist walking with the infamous serial killer, he notes they are headed to a place inmates aren't supposed to be taken, he takes action.

As he reaches the target area, he sees a woman burst out of a room, fleeing, and confronts the two he went after realizing his targets aren't the least bit surprised to see him. Promptly, after having something sprayed in his face, Dolan lost consciousness. When Dolan wakes and tries to explain the situation to his boss, it doesn't go well. Dolan's statements that a serial killer has escaped, falls on deaf ears when proof is presented that he's been in his cell the entire time.

Dolan refuses to let things go, and sets off on his own, only once again to find himself in a precarious position to explain to his boss, and all fingers point to him. Dolan finds that he's been ordered to see a psychologist, who just happens to be the woman, Dolan saw leaving that fateful day.

As Daughter Dawson, is questioning Dolan, her receptionist interrupts with a cell phone that her child is being threatened and to put Dolan on the phone. The call connects both Daughter and Dolan, and although Daughter can confirm to Dolan's boss that he's not crazy, she refuses. An unexpected attack, Dolan rescues Daughter, where both feel a strong connection to the other, but before they can start a relationship, Daughter informs him that she won't risk losing her license and there is a two year wait before they can see one another.

When the two years are up, the call Dolan gets isn't quite the one Daughter intended it to be, but it reunites them....for a short time. Both, Dolan and Daughter, have secrets, including some that are buried.

Dolan is going to have to confront a slew of memories, along with determination and some help, even if by getting help, it requires hiding a key fact, for his own selfish purposes. He is driven by one person: Daughter.

I couldn't read this fast enough to find out what happened next! From the first page, I was hooked and wondering about Dolan, heat vision, and Snake. I think, the protagonist's name, Daughter, only made her that more intriguing. An unusual name for a gutsy, underestimated woman! Also, be prepared to laugh, there were quite a few sentences that had me laughing out loud.

I received a complimentary copy and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.

Omg this was intense!!! I could not stop reading once I started because from the previous books I knew Dolan’s story was going to be even more intense and epic. From the previous book we see glimpses of Dolan and how he is handling things within the FBI over a case he can’t tell anyone about. Dolan is searching for the love of his life and even if they only had a small amount of time together they knew instantly they were made for each other. Daughter has had her ups and downs but when she meets Dolan she knows he’s the one but circumstances keep them apart more than time they get together but when you know you know and nothing will keep them apart. My heart was racing and hurting for them both because they have to endure so much I swear it’s like watching an amazing movie or tv show because the action is so incredible and the romance is on point. I have loved this journey and the outcome in the book, hope we see more!!!

Abbie Roads has done it again.

As usual, Roads has nailed it. Capturing Fate is a heart-wrenching, chilling read that had me thinking about what it means to be human. What makes people who they are? Nature vs nurture? And what kind of power does love hold.

This story picks up after Saving Mercy, following the story of Dolan and Daught. Straight away, you knew it was going to be a bumpy ride for them... their connection was so palpable you just knew it couldn't possibly be that easy.

But man, I did not see the direction this one was going to take. I found myself constantly thinking about this book until I could get back to it, and I'm just so excited for where this book could lead us!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was a rough start for me. The writing felt choppy and incomplete and I had a very hard time following the story. Things smoothed out towards the middle and I was able to enjoy the story, which had a uniqueness that I appreciated. The H/h were fairly typical and I found myself wanting more depth from them and the ending was all a bit cliche, tame and a bit fairytale-ish, for me.

All in all, I will probably pick up one in her other series to see how it grabs me.

This story is called Capturing Fate, but it captured me from the beginning I couldn't stop reading. Mrs. Abbie Roads you wrote an amazing book. The best way to describe this series is combination of paranormal and suspense. You will be surprised on the twists and secrets uncovered that I didn't see coming.
This book kept me thinking plot twist. Sorry no spoilers you have to pick up this book. Abbie has a great talent for writing and defenitely going to reread this one.

Capturing Fate was one of those books that you didn't want to end, but yet, you did. Let me explain. Dolan and Daught were meant-to-be, but they were also rather 'star-crossed lovers' for the majority of the book. They sought each other, but they rarely were with each other. You knew, at the end in one way, whether in life or in death, they would be together.

Dolan was the most unusual man Daught had ever met. She knew immediately that there was something different about this FBI agent when he stepped into her office for counseling. It was in his eyes. It was in the secrets he kept. It was in the way he looked at her. She was drawn to him, but he was her patient, and that meant he was off-limits. For two years.

Fast forward two years. Daught is ready to reconnect with Dolan...but tragedy strikes. Now she HAS to call him and when she's faced with the most painful part of her life, she's also faced with the most beautiful part, and her future. For the next few days, Dolan and Daught navigate her new world together, but their fawnish relationship is not destined to last.

Enter Ferol, the man who has been controlling Dolan and Daught's entire life, without them even knowing. He has big plans for both of them, and he's not going to let anything stop him from achieving that goal. The goal? To make the 'perfect' human.

The tragedies, tribulations, and triumphs that ensue as Daught and Dolan fight to find each other again are well-played out on the island of pain and torture that Ferol created. He thought he'd created the perfect 'army' of sons; after all, he had nineteen of them caged inside a building. Nineteen men that all reminded Daught of Dolan. It turned out, Ferol didn't take into account the one thing that would be his downfall; humanity. The humanity of one woman determined to show all nineteen of his sons that they didn't have to do Ferol's bidding.

Daught was brave, determined, and calculating when it came to finding her way back to Dolan. Dolan was, surprisingly, driven by emotion. An emotion even he couldn't explain until he landed on the island and everything in his life that was a mystery before was suddenly clear.

If you like fast-paced, well-written action and adventure with a hint of sci-fi paranormal, then you'll love Capturing Fate! If you're looking for romantic suspense with the traditional tropes, you won't find that here. The couple is not together for the majority of the book, and I wanted to be clear about that, but you will still love the relationship between these two star-crossed lovers who in the end, just might find their happily ever after, after all.

Capturing Fate Abbie Roads

""Instead of the end of something, this feels like the beginning of something." Snake’s tongue flicked against Dolan’s neck. "Something bad."" - Snake

Dolan Watts was an FBI agent; a good one. Undercover was his calling, but lately an undefined emotion was bothering him... Something creeping... An itch he couldn't scratch, a sight he couldn't see, a sound he couldn't hear... If only he could remember his traumatic past... Events unfold that has Dolan questioning his very sanity; then he meets Daughter...

"If she never saw him after today, she’d forever remember the way he looked at her right now, like she was his entire universe." - Daughter Dawson

Daughter Dawson is a psychologist; her life's work is to understand and help people. When Dolan Watts arrived for his first appointment, Daughter feels a primordial shift; her life is about to change... Wanting to help, yet terrified of the possible outcome, Daughter refuses to provide Dolan with the support he desperately needs. Two years later, her greatest fears are realized...

"“It started two years ago today when Bo Coray threw red paint on me and said”— a shudder ran through Dolan’s body as she said the words—“‘ Blood of the father. Blood of the mother. Blood of the sister. Blood on your hands because of the blood in your veins. ”" - Daughter

Evil lives on, even when supposedly incarcerated. Seemingly omniscient, Evil reaches out to touch... To rend... To destroy... In an attempt to capture Fate...

Intense and enthralling, this novel is mind blowing!

Goodness gracious me. Talk about intense, on the edge of your seat, keep turning pages to find out what happens. Yeah, that's what happens in this book.

This is NOT ... I repeat NOT a happy go lucky, cutesy romance. No siree. This is a knock your socks off, heart pumping, breathing heavy, fingernail biting paranormal, psycho killer, romantic thriller. Or thrilling romance. Yeah ... all of that.

Abbie captured my attention with her first release, Race the Darkness (if you haven't read it ... go now, read it, it's as awesome as this one), and I've been a fan since. Her world building is top notch, her characters are supremely flawed and human and yeah they each have a "special" gift that most of us norms don't have. But the blend of human and "extra" is done so well it's just captivating from beginning to end.

While this book can be read as a standalone ... I really recommend reading at the very least Saving Mercy before hand. And honestly if you want to get in good and deep ... start with Race the Darkness and work your way forward from there.

All Abbie's works are deep, dark and intense so be aware of that when picking them up. But the endings are so so so so so so soooooooooooo satisfying. Nothing comes easy for these characters ... but it all comes right in the end.

Loved it ... can't wait for more.

Capturing Fate, by Abbie Roads, is a paranormal, romantic suspense, with a dash of psychotic thriller thrown in the mix kinda book. From the very first chapter I was drawn into this unbelievably twisted plot that had me scratching my head while trying to speed read to get answers to all my questions.

This masterpiece took me on a literary journey unlike any other. I found myself so immersed in the words on the pages, that it felt as if I was right there with Dolan and Daughter (and boy do I wish that were true). Ms Roads obviously has an incredible imagination...she’d have to in order to weave this intricate story line.

Capturing Fate is book #2 in the Fatal Truth series and can be read as a stand alone. But I would strongly suggest going back and reading Saving Mercy once you finish this one (if you haven’t already). You won’t be disappointed. 5+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!!

If you've read the first book in the series, Saving Mercy, you should know that this book takes place before, during and after the timeline of that book. Its about at the half way point of this book before things catch up to the start of SM. That was a little confusing at first. With that said it was still a great paranormal read and finally getting Dolan and Daught's history and love story was both heartbreaking and thrilling. It was interesting to see how the two couples lives were connected in ways no one knew even from the first book. I've missed this authors voice and I hope its not so long before the next book.

I love Abbie Roads! Saving Mercy (the first book of this series) is my favorite of Abbie's books....Capturing Fate gives Saving Mercy a run for its money. This duo are now tied for favorite.
This book can be read independently from Saving Mercy. Time line wise it takes place before, during, and after the events of Saving Mercy. So really, I think of you read one you should read the other. But read Saving Mercy first otherwise you get spoilers.
Dolan and Daught have a beautiful but difficult love story. Their fate was tied together before they even knew each other. The second half of the book has this creepy Island of Dr Moreau feel to it, not quite exactly the same but close. It's emotional and heartwarming a definite roller coaster.

Wow, what can I say but Wow!! I believe this is the best book written by Abbie Roads, and yet she hasn't written a bad book yet. The beginning had me scratching my head but I promise you it all comes together. It even answers some questions from a previous book if you pay attention. Again I say great book.

I thought this was a great story. It kept me fascinated and wanting to know what would happen next with each turn of the page. The only hiccup I had was chapter 6 I had to read the first three pages, three times before I just decided I was missing something, shrugged my shoulders, skipped it, and moved on. I adored the ending. No spoilers!

Capturing Fate by Abbie Roads an intense and interesting five-star read. This is number two in the Fatal Truth series, but they can be read as stand-alone, they do cross over as the timeline of this story encompasses the other, you will get a couple of spoilers but if you dot mind that you don’t need to have read Saving Mercy first, but you may want to go back and read it. This one is a little more crazy and when you read it you will understand what I mean, its mega crazy, but its also mega good. The suspense is just sublime and Daughter and Dolan just pull you in and make you feel the story as well as read it.

Fantastic Adventure!!

This was non stop in your face crazy from start to finish. I love the combination of paranormal and suspense. This one had a twist I sure didn’t see coming.
A serial killers daughter and a man with a past he can’t remember.

I’ve been waiting for Dolan and Daughters book for a while now and it was so worth the wait. If you haven’t read Saving Mercy your gonna want to go back and read it the events run parallel with this book.

I’m sorry. I never should have made us wait two years. We should’ve captured fate when we had the chance.

I don’t know what lives in the mind of Abbie Roads but I’m so glad she blesses us with the results in her unique amazing stories.

CAPTURING FATE is the second book in the Fatal Truth series, although it could be read as a standalone. I say could because if you do, you're missing out on another 5-star read!

This novel had me confused slightly, to begin with, simply because of the timeline. I 'presumed' it would start after book one finished, but it didn't. It actually runs parallel to book one for most of it but gives you a completely different viewpoint.

And what a viewpoint it was. This book is such a gripping read. The big bad here is fully dimensional, evil in every way. Seriously, I hated the man! And Dolan and Daught, bless them. They really go through the mill. In fact, all of her boys have done and do. My heart broke for them so many times.

Although this is still dark and violent, it's not quite as violent as book one. This makes sense as this is a different book! Trust me though, it's still not light and fluffy.

I adored the ending and probably had a sappy smile on my face. The uncles about floored me, and I loved them all for it. The only problem now is there are nineteen other people I need HEAs for. If anyone deserves a HEA, it's them!

A brilliant addition to the series, and one I have no hesitation in recommending. A stunning story that kept me in its grip from start to finish. READ IT!

** same worded review will appear elsewhere **

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Daughter Dawson is a psychologist who knows very little about her past, being adopted when she was younger with the express rule that she keep the name Daughter, (which if you ask me is a really crappy name, but there you go, she’s stuck with it for the rest of her life) she is at a loss as to where she came from and who her parents are. Quite early on, however, the bombshell of all bombshells is dropped in Daughter’s lap and literally blows her world apart, her father happens to be a serial killer.
Dolan (I don’t know what it is with the D names but hey, just gotta roll with it) is an interesting character, dealing with a lot of dark and horrible crap in his past that has left him with some interesting coping mechanisms? I question because I assume that’s what they are. I won’t spoil it for all the readers out there - got to leave a little mystery and all that – but I thought the way that Roads wrote Dolan was really intriguing. Dolan works for the FBI and bodies have definitely been turning up, at least he is pretty sure that bodies are turning up, no one else around him seems as convinced. In light of this, its decided that maybe the best thing for him is to go seek some professional help for his apparent issue and that’s when Daughter and Dolan meet.
Obviously the first time they meet there is an instant connection and I’ve got to say that it kind of rankled me a little bit. The instant connection deal that is in most romance novels annoys me anyway, I get why it's there and I know that other people enjoy it, but for me, it just feels daft and unearned. You can find someone attractive but the instant eye-meeting and being completely turned-on shenanigans that turns up quite a bit just doesn’t do it for me and in this book, I just felt that it really didn’t need it. Daughter and Dolan already have this really quite horrific things connecting them, drawing them together, and if felt that it was enough.
Still, I will say that this is an enjoyable read, I thought that the premise was really interesting and it did keep me hooked. Thought it was a compelling idea really, I mean how would you react if you found that a parent you had never known suddenly decided to turn up in your life and they were a serial killer. I think I’d find a nice little rock to hide under. For me the romance between Daught and Dolan was okay, but I felt like it took centre stage in the novel when it really didn’t need to, there were other elements that I wish Roads had focused on just a little bit more. Still, someone else who reads this may think the balance is just right and that the romance is needed. Tis just my opinion. I will say that, even with how I feel about the romance, it was well written, in fact, this whole book was well written. I didn’t actually realise till quite a way in that this was the second book in a series, I mean honestly, you really can’t tell, it does a grand job of standing alone. I may have to go back and read the first one though, just to see what I am missing out on. Would recommend this to romance and thriller lovers alike, this story has both in equal measure and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Daughter Dawson is a clinical psychologist with her own practice and a loving family backing up her every decision, but that all changes when she goes for a job interview at a prison where she is trapped in a room with someone and a secret is revealed that she cannot believe and then she is sworn to secrecy and is threatened with severe repercussions if it is revealed. Dolan Watts is an FBI agent with a haunted past, he has grown up in foster care feeling that he can only rely on himself and that despite his independence, he is lacking and that he has to go everything alone, this lands him in trouble one day when he is working undercover and breaks his cover to apprehend a criminal who is escaping, but nobody is willing to believe him when he tries to explain what he has just witnessed and the fact that he isn’t a team player or someone who plays by the rules ends up with him having to see a psychologist. What neither Daughter or Dolan expect is that they will end up as therapist and client after what each of them know but cannot tell the other, however, the one thing that they can’t avoid or deny is the instant attraction which they feel, but cannot act on due to professional boundaries, but they agree that in time, maybe they can acknowledge their feelings after some time has passed.

Two years to the day later and Daughter is trying to decide whether to make the phone call she desperately wants to, but she is running scenarios through her head of what might have happened in the intervening years and hesitates, in the end, she decides to call her mother up for some advice, but when she doesn’t get an answer she goes to their house, however when she gets there, her worst nightmares become reality but instead of calling 911, she calls Dolan and he immediately gets the address and high tails it over to see her. As Dolan supports her over the next 24 hours as she has to relive her nightmare over and over again, she asks him to stay with her and one thing leads to another and they finally realise that everything they have both been waiting for is reciprocated by the other and as the whole truth comes out, fate intervenes and just as they are starting something meaningful, it is ripped apart.

Dolan then tries to figure out a way from the mess that has been orchestrated around him and as others are dragged into this mess, it is clear that there is someone manipulating them all like puppets and that there are more lies and secrets to unravel before the web can be broken open, but danger and conspiracies surround them, but can Daughter and Dolan figure out who is behind everything, how they are doing it and what the ultimate goal is, or will everyone they love be targeted? This crime thriller is a whirlwind of lies, deceit, ulterior motives and twists and turns which keep you hooked as the mystery increases with the danger and leaves you rushing to find out the conclusion as well.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/ 5

This book made me call my whole rating system into question.

Honestly, I’ve always parsed it out to be like this:

5⭐️: Exceptional, seminal, immediate re-read to figure out how the author did that.
4⭐️: Great book, solid read, would recommend.
3⭐️: Some issues, had potential
2⭐️: Problematic AF, no thanks.
1⭐️: This is garbage.

And with this book, I wavered HARD between a 3 and 4. In the end, I decided on a 4, because despite some of the flaws… this was a great, compelling book. If you wrote this book, please let me beta read and developmental edit with you. I promise you, I can help you go from “Okay, this interesting” to “Holy cow, this book is AMAZING.”

The plot is great. There’s an FBI agent (I deeply love FBI stories, and I know I shouldn’t) (I totally picture him as the FBI agent from Wolf of Wall Street, FYI) and a therapist, and some sort of genetic modification, and while every now and then the story took a turn for “Oh, it’s THIS type of book”, NONE OF IT DIDN’T WORK.

Well, some things needed some help.

Dolan is an FBI agent who has an interesting and checkered past, and Daughter (Daugt, for short) is a therapist who can’t keep away from him. There is an absolutely bananas series of events that throw them together, they have a total insta-love connection, there’s a secret baby, secret/found family… Honestly, this book has to be experienced to be appreciated, because I just listed a bunch of tropes I usually hate, but really loved here. Here’s what I loved about their relationship:
The actual professional boundary of dating after two years of Dolan being Daught’s client.
They love each other right away, and I bought it hook, line, and sinker
They’re separated REPEATEDLY in this book, but still choose each other
DESPITE ALL ODDS, I believed their HEA.

Here’s the things that I (once again, please let me beta read for you!) think could have been changed to make this book PERFECT.
Dolan and Daughter could have spent a little more time getting to know each other as friends and people before their 2 year separation.
There’s a lot of serial killers. This could be streamlined.
WHY DID SNAKE GO AWAY!? We lost him for a while, and it was kind of belatedly explained toward the end of the book.
There was a little unnecessary murder
It would have been AWESOME to see Daught use her therapy skills to manipulate her way out of captivity.

Overall though, this book was great. I enjoyed it, I will definitely read another book from this author, because it was just bananas enough to be totally bingeable.

Capturing Fate picks up where Saving Mercy left off, but this time the story explores the mysterious loner, FBI Agent, Dolan Watts, and the deadly secrets he uncovers about the notorious Creator.

Dolan has been a loner ever since he was discovered at five years old covered in blood then put in the foster care system. He copes with things by talking to his imaginary friend Snake. And he doesn’t like to follow rules which gets him into trouble as an FBI agent. Then he meets the beautiful and kind psychologist Daughter “Daught” Dawson. Their connection is immediate and filled with peril and near-death experiences. People from Dolan’s and Daught’s past are out to harm them as they are drawn into a diabolical experiment by a man called the Creator.

Daught was adopted by a wonderful family and raised with love and happiness until it was all taken away from her. Her family was murdered and she was kidnapped by a mad man. The only bright spot in her life is Dolan with whom she shares so many hopes and dreams. When she is taken to a remote island to be used as a lab rat, she finds a group of men who have a connection to Dolan who may just be her salvation. Will Dolan find her before she becomes obsolete for the Creator’s needs?

I love the strong chemistry between Daught and Dolan and how they don’t give up on each other even though their circumstances are dire. Watching Dolan change from a loner to a team player is nice considering he needs all the help he can get from his colleague Cain who has a personal stake in the outcome. Without giving away the plot, I really like Daught’s efforts to win over the group on the island. Their living conditions are abysmal, but she gives them a sense of peace they sadly have never had.

This is an action-packed twisted love story with even more of a paranormal feel than the first book. Ms. Roads certainly knows how to keep the reader on their toes while hoping the heroes make it through a messy and dangerous situation. I can’t wait to see what direction this series goes from here. Recommend highly!

Thank you to Ms. Roads for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.

***5 ‘Snake’ Stars***

I’ve been waiting for Dolan and Daught’s story for a long LONG time and the author did not disappoint. This was a crazy ride from start to finish and there were quite a few “W.T…?!?!” that came out of my mouth, but I was hooked until the very end.

I loved Dolan and Daughter aka Daught. They are resilient, determined and have a code of honor and sense of loyalty that drew me in. They also have murky pasts that, as they come to light, make them even more amazing for all that they’ve accomplished in their lives. Their journey to their HEA is a strange mix of insta and insanely slow burn goodness, but they worked for me. They had that connection, that unexplainable thing that made it easy to see just how great they’d be together and I have to say that they got put through the wringer in this one and totally deserve all the goodness they got in the end.

The wait for this book was worth it. The mind f*ck factor definitely made me do a few double takes along the way, but in the end, it was all worth it. The triggers are many, but if you’ve read Saving Mercy or the Fatal Dreams series you know that it all has a purpose. The twists and turns were done well and it looks like we may be getting a spin off...maybe...hopefully *BSEG*

Note: While this book can be read as a stand-alone, I do recommend that you read Saving Mercy first to fully understand all that is going on.

When your job is mainly based on instincts and you then start doubting it, can you carry on and find the evil that you are trying to find.

Dolan Watts is an FBI agent with a history but that history pushes him to be able to understand the minds of some of the evilest criminals until now. This new case is different and will he be able to push back the physiological aspect and get on with his work but this one likes to mind games so he needs to ask for help but will he be able to keep it professional.

Daughter Dawson is a psychologist and once she meets Dolan, she then is compelled to help him although this man could destroy the walls she had built up for so long. Can she keep the distance and stay professional or will the lines blur and they become too close to find this mind-bending killer?

I love a good psychological thriller and this one ticks all the boxes. The story twists and turns into areas you did not think would take you. The characters were well developed and complemented each other brilliantly and with the similar backgrounds they both had it draws you into the story and the characters and gets you fully immersed into the story from the beginning.
This book can be read as a stand-alone story but I found reading the first book Saving Mercy a great stepping stone into the wonderful world and mind of Abbie Roads. I can’t wait to get stuck into more books by this wonderful author.

I loved everything about Abbie Roads' Capturing Fate. It will be a hard book to write a review on, however, because I don't want to spoil any of it.

In short, Dolan Watts is an FBI agent keeping his eye on an incarcerated serial killer, who seems to be heavily influencing copycat crimes from his prison cell. His work brings him into the orbit of psychologist Daughter Dawson, who is herself connected to the killer. Their attraction is instantaneous, but fate intervenes. The bulk of the remaining story is dedicated to them finding their way back to each other and dealing with the additional surprises that find them along the way.

The book is split into two parts, and it also touches on the storyline of an earlier book in the series. I did not read that earlier story (Abbie Roads is a new favorite for me), but I got the impression that the two books run parallel rather than sequentially. The knitting together of the two stories is done a little less smoothly than I would have liked, but by the time the second part of the book got going, I'd forgotten that little gripe.

I would say that this story does well described as a romantic suspense with a touch of supernatural thrown in (just a teeny bit). It also has shades of Frankenstein, King Kong, and Pygmalion. I really hope there are more to this series, and that's all I'm going to say.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!

3.5 hearts

I enjoyed the first book Saving Mercy. It felt pretty realistic even with some paranormal aspects.  The couple, Cain and Mercy, show up a bit here in Capturing Fate.  The main characters are Dolan and Daught.  The situation was dark, and some horrifying events occurred.

Dolan, like Cain,  has genetic capabilities and works for the FBI.  I had a hard time getting started in the story.  Dolan didn't seem to have a partner, and doesn't show his talents much.   He seems to not have much luck with his work and seems kind of ineffective.

I also didn't feel very connected to the characters, and didn't feel much personal growth happened.  Unfortunately, we don't get much depth on Cain or Mercy, so it helps to have read the first book.  It isn't necessary but I might have enjoyed the first part more if I had read Saving Mercy more recently.

When Dolan meets Daught, it's insta-love.  We get plenty of "we can't be together" because of the professional association angst which all seems weird.  Finally, they are able to get together and then things blow up.  At this point, things pick up.  Dolan continues to work alone and takes a long time to get anywhere.

I really liked the way things wrapped up.  I finally got a better connection to the characters, especially Daught. She was in a horrible position and handled herself well.
