Devashish Sardana, in this second novel, tells us the story of five seriously ill teenagers who committed suicide in locked rooms in different parts of India.

Simone Singh is entrusted with this puzzling case, and she construes the fact that all of them were murdered in a similar manner.

The narrative vacillates between the deeds of the killer and the contiguous mental health struggles of the protagonist. Readers might get the vibe of locked-room murders written by authors like Agatha Christie in the initial half of this book. But from there, the author takes us through a different route through various psychological aspects and methods to control the human mind, which makes the reading experience intriguing.

Is Simone Singh chasing a serial killer? Why is the killer selecting only terminally ill patients? Will the killer commit similar murders again? The author answers all these questions convincingly in this book.

What I learned from this book
1) What is one of the most important lessons we should learn from the pandemic?
COVID-19 has taught us a lot of important lessons. It will be marked as one of the toughest phases of human history. It permanently changed the lives of many people.

One of the most important lessons the pandemic taught us was personal hygiene. It showed us the importance of personal hygiene in a human being's life. Simple things like properly washing hands or disinfecting the hands using sanitizer became the deciding factors for not getting the coronavirus infection. The same can be said in the case of wearing masks. The author is well aware of this situation and beautifully discusses this aspect in this book.
"What's the point of wearing a face mask that covers your mouth, but not your nose?' Simone admonishes the constable, whose face mask has conveniently slipped to his chin. The pandemic might have fizzled out, but good hygiene shouldn't. And neither should common sense."

2) Why is it important to have a proper support system in our lives?
There was an increase in mental health problems and suicide rates during the pandemic. It showed us the importance of a proper support system in our lives. Supportive people were the ones that everyone wanted to become a friend of. The importance of sharing our feelings, be it joy or sadness, proved pivotal for the smooth functioning of everyone's lives. The author shows us the importance of having supportive people in our lives through his characters in this novel
"People like supportive people. And nothing brings people closer together than shared suffering."

3) Is suicide a selfish or cowardly act?
There are multiple points of view for the above question. There are numerous reasons why a person decides to end their life. Whatever the reason for suicide, we have to say that if a son/ daughter commits suicide, it will severely affect the mental stability of the whole family, especially that of their parents, and a lot of effort will be needed to overcome the struggles caused by it.
"Sonali would never commit suicide, I told them. She was a headstrong girl, fearless and independent. She wasn't a coward who'd resort to suicide.
Simone clears her throat, stays quiet. Unlike popular belief, suicide isn't synonymous with cowardice. Suicide requires every bit of the human spirit to end something so precious. Life. It's easier for the headstrong."

4) What is lucid dreaming?
Lucid dreaming, on simpler terms, is a situation where the dreamer is actually aware that they are dreaming. If you are someone who is interested in knowing the physiology behind dreaming, it will be an amazing concept to explore. This novel discusses lucid dreaming in-depth and will be a good option for those who are interested in knowing more about it.
"It's when a person becomes aware that they are dreaming. You know the events flashing through your brain aren't really happening--it's a dream- but the dream feels vivid and real. It's like watching a movie that your brain has cooked up. You practice it often and you can control the unfolding of events in the dream. Then, you are no longer just watching the movie, you are also directing the movie."

5) What is self-hypnosis?
This novel discusses a lot of important methods in psychology. Self-hypnosis is one among them.
"Self-hypnosis is exactly what the name suggests. You give yourself positive reinforcement to accomplish a goal and become highly focused and completely absorbed in the present. It's like the movie, 3 Idiots. You say-'all is well, all is well--to yourself over and over again. And soon, you believe it."

My favourite three lines from this book
"- There is nothing more heartbreaking than the indifference of loved ones when you need them most. The opposite of love is not hate; it's indifference."

"In a bureaucracy marred by tardiness, nothing moves things faster than a danda from an IAS officer."

"Niceties can't pierce through the tough, thick skin of people used to being kicked around. They need a thump on the head to get things done."

What could have been better?
There is an instance in this book when a doctor tells the protagonist that she can remove her mask. A normal doctor in his right mind would never say to another person, especially after seeing the devastating consequences of various waves of the pandemic. It is almost inevitable to make similar mistakes when a person outside a professional stream tries to write a novel on another professional stream that is totally alien to him. These minor discrepancies are negligible compared to the overall scope of this book. Only a few of the best authors, like K.R. Meera, have crafted a perfect novel about professionals outside their field of expertise.

This book has all that you seek in a modern-day thriller. It has locked-room murders, an unreliable protagonist, and a final twist that will satisfy most readers who love to read psychological thrillers.

⚔️ THE GIRL WITH BROKEN DREAMS: DREAM AT YOUR OWN RISK ⚔️
By Devashish Sardana

🖊️I have never recently completed a book within 10 hours of laying my hands on it. The last time I did such a thing was when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was out. I am truly in awe of the way he has brought out this book without giving way to commercial stuff and mundane nonsense.

🖊️Okay. Let me just put this out there - I really loved this book. Why am I saying this so plainly? Well, because I'm not really sure how to review the book and do it justice without risking some spoilers. This is a very clever, puzzling plot with CBI investigation, mystery and with brilliant characters, a lot of suspense and a lot of tragedy, wrapped up in a story that touches upon a part of history that will remain memorable for all of the reasons.

🖊️Mr. Devashish takes you through a roller coaster ride filled with investigation, Murder Cases and Suicides. The blending of the casas and the investigator with struggling mental health was so fine that you tend to take it along with the story. It was more like reading the Clause 49 of Listing agreement in a fictional form.

🖊️In this book, what are we going to explore? As we all know it's a Murder thriller, we are going to jump onto a suicide story. The question here is, whether it is a suicide or Murder? Then, why there is four more similar cases? Is there any links between them? To know the answers of all these questions, please go ahead and read the book.

🖊️ I think some people might be turned off by some of the style variations in the book, but I felt it was fascinating to see the challenge laid before - this is an ambitious book and I felt like it mostly succeeded. If you've never read a book set in India by an Indian author I can definitely see this story as more challenging to grasp...but I still liked it. A lot.

🖊️Overall, it was definitely a fun ride and an "unputdownable" book at last!!!!

Once again, Mr. Sardana hit the ball out of the park. Much like it's predecessor, this novel had an amazing pace, a riveting story and the growth of Simone's character was heartwarming.

What exactly is this book?
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but this book could have been longer. The story had enormous potential. I was hooked from the start, but the execution was terrible...so bad.

I understand that the author has a knack for revealing his killers and making us enjoy the psychological thriller aspect of his books, which I am all about, but this book disappointed me.

All of the adult characters were portrayed as overreacting childishly. In my opinion, the depiction of poor mental health symptoms in real life is not as exaggerated as in this book. The entire point of this book is that mental health struggles are never loud, and our killer took advantage of this situation; however, our protagonist (ASP Simone), an adult, was dramatized in such a way that the serious theme of poor mental health appeared to be a mockery. It was really unsettling over all.

And, yes, this book has a very bad ending. It will undoubtedly leave a bad taste if you were hoping for some light after dealing with such heavy themes in this book.

Trigger warning: Mental Health and Domestic Violence.

I loved reading the 1st novel, and Devashish's 2nd novel did not disappoint at all! He has lived up to my expectation and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. He was a simple way of narrating the story and dives head first into the plot. Even though I was partially correct who the killer was, I didn't see the plot twist coming.

I loved Simone's character - she's feisty, impulsive and sensitive. Reading about the challenges she faced growing up broke my heart, I don't blame her for the decisions she took. She was courageous to face her dark past. I managed to complete the book in 25 hours too, I would highly recommend this novel.

Story Line:
“The story starts when a terminally ill teen commits suicide in her hostel room and Simone Singh, a CBI investigator who was also dealing with her mental health is assigned this case.
Simone starts investigating all the connected persons and comes to the conclusion that this can't be a suicide as more people are committing suicide and all these cases are identical. There is a person who is causing these things to happen!

The time was running out and Simone was determined to find the murderer. “

I was really hoping this story would conclude with this book but as it seems this was just the first phase. Simone was pretty close in finding the murderer and shutting down the case. I loved how this turned into a murder mystery from a Psychological thriller. It keeps you guessing and i think that's what the author wanted to achieve!!
Moreover it also makes you want to read the next book in the series to know what and why everything that happened, actually happened.
There's so much more to the story that i would like to know and the reason why i can't wait to read the next book.

Verdict: If you are looking for a fast paced thriller then I’d highly recommend this book!

genre : psychological thriller

My 💭:
[28/11/25 7.30 PM]

I am growing quite fond of the author devashish sarad books. They are like quick bursts of energy on an otherwise dull day. Love the thrill and the suspense of his books. 💯

Now coming to this story, omg the blurb itself gave me such goosebumps! This is like a weird psycho killer version of 'The Fault In Our Stars'. The story is sooo morally ambiguous that right from the start I was very much unsure whether to actually consider the villain a bad person. I had a pretty good idea about who the villain might be, but I kept my thoughts on hold till I got a grasp on the story. But given the first hand narration from the villain themselves, it was hard to resist.

I was excited to meet Simone after 'the Girl in The Glass Case' and was really sad to see what life has brought to her. I hope the court mandated therapy sessions help her but then....💀. I wish she stopped reacting to everything and everyone like this. Yet, I could understand how triggering this particular case was for her. Cancer patients committing suicides from depression, or maybe murders - can cause so much distress to a healthy detective as well. I mean imagine killing someone terminal and depressed by hypnosis! No wonder Simone was having panic attacks! But thank gods for Lucas, the ever cheerful Lucas! He brought out a certain cheery aspect to the investigation. And another new character I really loved was Dr Diya. Omg she and her sarees and her charisma! Even I, the forever tomboy, am feeling inspired to drape a saree and feel as much regal! She is indeed a very talented therapist!

I really enjoyed reading the book. The twist could have been better because I had already predicted everything halfway. So I was feeling a bit letdown at the end. Also, I wanted to know how 'the thing' started with Sonali. Was it really her idea or was it the dreamcatcher's idea of saving her? No answers! But the journey of reading the book? No regrets. 10/10 for the unputdownable storytelling and suspense - just what this depressed reader was craving this Friday. And that chilly ending omg! Can't wait to read the next book soon!

I finished 'The Girl With Broken Dreams' over the weekend, and it was well worth every second. The story follows Detective Ms. Simone, who is struggling with her own mental trauma while being pulled into a disturbing case: five terminally ill teenagers have died by suicide, all in exactly the same manner. Simone, while fighting to keep herself sane, is determined to uncover the truth—she believes these were not suicides, but murders.

This is one of the very few books that managed to keep me hooked on every single page. The last five chapters had me literally at the edge of my seat!

Themes:

The novel weaves together powerful themes such as mental health, COVID-19, the importance of family, and the fragility of life.

My Favorite Lines:

- “There is nothing more heartbreaking than the indifference by loved ones when you need them the most. The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.”
- “Suicide isn’t synonymous with cowardice. Suicide requires every bit of human spirit to end something so precious. Life.”
- “First rule of gossip: You give some, you take some.”
- “Second rule of gossip: What’s shared in whispers is always true.”

What I Learned:

- Life is fragile, and so are the relationships you build with people around you. Appreciate them while you still have the chance.
- Mental health, though invisible, is the main pillar of your life. It holds you up tall and strong so never take it for granted.

Recommendation:
I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an exciting and suspenseful read. However, if you prefer a perfectly clean and closed ending, this one might leave you slightly uneasy.

The Girl with Broken Dreams by Devashish Sardana- 3.5/5!

Genre: Psychological Crime Thriller

Premise:
Simone Singh, Assistant Superintendent of Police, low on social skills, battles her own mental health issues while hunting a probable killer making terminally ill teens appear to commit suicide in locked rooms across India, forcing her into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the killer, who may be targeting her next.

Review:
Devashish Sardana, is a breath of fresh air in Indian crime writing that has hardly had any great success. And he is good.

The writing is simple and effective, low on jargons yet clever and keeps you hooked throughout. In his second book, the oscillates between the doings of a killer and the mental health struggles of the protagonist, that eventually blend into one. Instead of the usual whodunit style, the writer delves into the psychology of the killer and methods to control the human mind - a play I personally enjoyed.

Never a dull moment or unnecessary sub plot, Devashish weaves an intriguing tale that is relentlessly paced and a cop with realistic struggles that has a definitive character arc.

The qualm I have is that the enormous potential of the plot felt underused with an ending that doesn’t quite satisfy the journey. Compared to the first book - the hugely successful The Girl In the Glass Case, the second book is slightly predictable and lacks depth in the plot, but did not disappoint me otherwise.

Amidst all the ‘Girl in the..’ or ‘Women in the..’ floating around, Devashish stands out strong and I would recommend his books instead.

The Girl with Broken Dreams by Devashish Sardana takes us into ASP Simone Singhs second case. As I see it, this hits closer home and plays with the mind and heart deeply. Five terminally ill girls have committed apparent suicide in a frighteningly similar manner inside closed rooms. While Simone is herself facing clinical depression from loss and guilt, has attempted suicide and undergoing job ordered therapy, she s put in charge of the case with the last suicide.
.
The suicides are unique, the victims use contents of a box called Dream Box which has hallucinogenic candle, a gauge meant for horses and a device called dreamo and they communicate with the Dreamcatcher, who help them cross over... The victims deaths actually raise questions regarding pain driven suicide, euthanisia and the thin line between leading to doubt about murder.
.
Simone along with Lucas and her troubles have to reach the Dream catcher and in the process they are implicating a terminally ill girl Noor and a reputed, psychologist who is a politician's daughter and also Simone d designated doctor by order!
.
I liked the use of psychotherapy techniques mentioned in the book and their use. The plot is paced, especially with the voice excerpt notes from the Dream Catcher. The aesthetic way of the suicide is also quite uniquely elucidated. I have not read the previous book so cant really put the comparison out.

Five terminally ill, troubled teens commit suicide in their hostel rooms locked from inside.
Until one chilling truth reveals: murders.
But how is the killer passing murders as suicides inside locked rooms?

This is the second book in the series—The Girl in the Glass Case.
Simone Singh is working for CBI and is given responsibility to take care of the case. While teenage girls who committed suicide are mentally depressed due to certain health conditions, Simone is fighting her own battles and attempted suicide herself after losing her only family recently, she understands the pain the girls might be going through. On the other hand, she is desperate to catch the killer, but can she get a hold of the killer?

It's like there's a problem, a puzzle for Simone, who needs to solve it. Simone partners with Lucas to work on the case; all the characters are well developed I quiet enjoyed the mystery element in this book. However, it was predictable up to some extent; a few scenes felt repetitive, but I did not expect it to be in the way that it was ended. In a way, it felt like this one lacks a bit of depth in terms of plot, but it did not disappoint me compared to the other aspects of the book.

It's a quick, easy read for me. The plot of this book is quite interesting. It deals with mental health, suicides, domestic violence…It's fast-paced, filled with suspense, and a murder mystery perfect for binge reading. I highly recommend this book for the plot and mystery.

"The Girl with Broken Dreams" is a psychological thriller that intricately weaves a tale of mystery, mental health, and the complexities of human emotions. The story revolves around the tragic deaths of five terminally ill teenagers, which initially appear to be suicides but they are meticulously staged murders.

Author’s writing is engaging and accessible, with vivid descriptions that immerse readers in the story's emotional landscape. The character of Simone Singh is well-developed, portrayed as a strong yet vulnerable protagonist navigating the complexities of her personal and professional life. Supporting characters, such as Lucas and Noor, add depth to the narrative, each contributing to the unfolding mystery.

This book delves into dark and sensitive themes such as terminal illness, suicide, manipulation, and the fragility of mental health. While the thriller aspect takes center stage, these underlying themes add a layer of depth and provoke thought.

A few readers may have guessed (as I did ) certain plot twists or elements, which reduced the suspense for them and apart from this those who appreciate psychological thrillers with depth and emotional resonance, this book is a worthwhile read. It not only entertains but also fosters discussions about mental health, grief, and the complexities of human relationships.

This gripping psychological thriller masterfully explores the complexities of mental health, weaving a tale of deception, manipulation, and hidden truths. The story centers around Simone Singh, a determined and relentless CBI investigator, who is assigned to uncover the truth behind a series of apparent suicides that, as the investigation progresses, are revealed to be cold-blooded murders.
Terminally ill patients have been taking their own lives, and the case is handed to APS Simone Singh for investigation.
What initially appears to be a series of straightforward suicides begins to reveal strange, unsettling patterns.
Despite the apparent simplicity of the cases, Simone is resolute in her belief that these deaths are not suicides, but murders. As Simone digs deeper into the case, she finds herself battling her own mental demons, which adds a profound layer of complexity to the narrative. Balancing her commitment to uncovering the culprits with her own emotional battles, Simone embarks on a journey that challenges her both professionally and personally. Her inner struggles, intertwined with the chilling mystery, elevate the story into an intricate exploration of the human psyche, where the line between perception and reality blurs, and trust becomes a fragile commodity.

Honestly saying this was not what I expected. I thought it to be some cliche plot where after um about 10 chapters you get the hint of the killer but this book was a damn rollercoaster.

The way I disliked Simmone and then understood her side of the story and empathised with her. Her will power was something I really admire that even in those dire circumstances where she was about to lose her job she still didn't give up. Her bravery, her perseverance just got to me. It felt like I was really there with her in the book.

The book was such a roller coaster of emotions. I was so anxious so as to who the killer was because the way Devashish Sardana sir wrote this book got me. I was left guessing who the killer is and the topic chosen is also very sensitive actually and he portrayed it so well. The complexities of relationships the depth of each and every emotion. The struggle to find the killer had me on my toes. I don't even know how I kept my curiousity in check so as not to just flip to the last chapter and find out who the killer was

"Don't worry. It's not a sad, romantic, coming-of-age young adult story. As I said, it was a love story.

THRILLER

Thank you so much @penguinindia for sending me a copy of this book.

I just finished reading my first book by Devashish Sardana and I have to say, it definitely won't be my last. From the start, I was completely hooked. The fast-paced plot was incredibly gripping and THAT ENDING left me desperate for more. It's clear that the story is only half finished and I need to know what happens next.

While the ending was quite predictable, the last plot twist really caught me off guard. Overall, I really enjoyed the whole investigation journey. The audio journal chapters added so much depth to the story and kept me thoroughly confused. But elements like these make a murder mystery so much more enjoyable to read.

The writing was simply amazing. I felt a strong connection to Simone's character and Lucas was such a ray of sunshine, I loved him. If you're looking to get out of a reading slump, then this book is definitely the perfect choice.

The book begins with the mysterious story of five girls who committed suicide, each in a room locked from the inside. Though they all suffered from cancer, they lived in different cities. In every room, the police discovered a gauge-7 needle and jewelry boxes engraved with the words "Dream Box."

How could there be such similarities in these suicides? Were they really suicides, or was it murder?

The case is taken up by a determined CBI officer, Simone Singh, who is herself battling depression after the death of her grandmother.

Will she manage to solve the case, or will it remain a mystery?

This was my second book by the author after The Girl in the Glass Case. The plot was captivating, keeping the reader engaged throughout. The writing style was simple and easy to understand. The twists at the end were remarkable and left me eager to read the next part of the series. The book cover was simple yet elegant, and I particularly liked the characters of Dia, Lucas, Noor, and others.

Dare i say better this was better than the first book? Yeah...

The story? The concept of euthanasia? Simone's character development? Incredible.

This book redeemed Simone's character for me. I disliked her in the first book due to her gratuitously bodyshaming Zoya. However, this book made me actually like her. The depression story line is well developed. And so is the actual story.

This book has an average rating of 3.86 stars so I was dubious I wouldn't like it. But I did. Oh god, I did

So what went wrong? Well, the ending. I NEVER expected Noor being the Dreamcatcher and it was definitely a turning point. However, I have some grievances. How did Noor actually became a hypnotist? How did Dia teach her? That was left out.

Also, the ending was sloppy as f*ck. There could have been another 100 pages of them incriminating Dia, but NO!

Also, Lucas' character, don't ask. I liked him overall, but still it was just cringy when he instantly got infatuated with Dia. No, bro..

I finished this book in two days and that in itself is proof of how much I have enjoyed this plot and how it kept me on the edge throughout the story.

It's a story of unusual suicides that happen among terminally ill teens who are surviving with pain and misery every single day. They just want the pain to end by any means.

ASP Simone Singh is assigned to investigate the case and she proves to be a fierce and determined officer. She is also struggling with her own mental health and her past keeps haunting her time and again.

There's someone behind all these suicides! Will Simone be able to catch the criminal or will the revelation jeopardize her career?

I found it thrilling and unpredictable. There were a lot of discussions regarding mental health and how it impacts each one of us differently. There were only a few things that didn't sit right with me, otherwise it was all good and worth reading.

The thing I enjoyed most about Girl with Broken Dreams was that it grabbed my curiosity from the first page. It kept me engaged throughout the novel, and I finished it in two sittings. Anyone who prefers strong heroines to damsels in distress should read this novel. Simon's character was fantastic. She was determined. There are no unclear or irrelevant secondary plotlines in the writing. One star less because I was able to guess the culprits. Lucas' fascination with the doctor irked me, despite the fact that it was obvious what was creating the fascination in the first place. It was an interesting experience for me to read about hypnosis and lucid dreams for the first time. I know exactly what I have to avoid in my life (lol).

This was my first book from the author, and it certainly won't be the last.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author @devashishsardana and I can easily say that I enjoyed the story right from the first page. This suspense/Thriller will keep you on the edge and in a matter of time you will be towards the end of the book. I loved how easy and fast paced this read was and I definitely did not see the final twist.

The author knows how to grab the reader’s attention in this unique thriller. The one thing I loved about this book was how to the point everything was explained instead of giving us unnecessary details and dragging the story. I’m hoping there will be a part 2 which I will be sure to read.

Thanks once again @devashishsardana and @penguinindia for giving me a chance to read and review this book during this spooky season!❤️🎃

I will call it a decent read.

Some of the "break throughs" that the detectives come across in the book are quite simple honestly. It was quite stupid how suddenly they would arrive at conclusions while solving the case. A good detective novel would not have those kind of mistakes. There were a few things which just did not make sense and those plot points were critical to the story! *SPOLER AHEAD* Noor tried to kill herself and Simone just happened to make a connection and go and save her. What if she actually died? Was that also a part of her plan?

I do like the storyline though. It is quite fresh. The character Simone is quite sad and boring but it is conveyed pretty well in the book why she has such a personality and how the hardships in her own personal life have contributed in her head strong personality.

"The Girl with Broken Dreams" delves into the most obscure facets of the human psyche via a character-driven story that transcends the boundaries of psychological suspense. Fans of strong women, thrilling mysteries, and psychological thrillers with stunning conclusions should not miss Devashish Sardana's deft writing and Simone Singh's unwavering search for the truth.

The narrative opens with a devastating mystery that creates a spooky atmosphere and draws readers right into the drama. The tale gains depth and passion from the nuanced depiction of the father-daughter connection, which develops into an incredible bond. The plot takes an unexpected turn when a shocking terrible occurrence occurs, drawing readers in with its gripping turns.

😢 A Poignant Exploration of Mental Health

Thought-provoking and Insightful
"The Girl with the Broken Dreams" may be a small book, but its impact is anything but diminutive. Devashish Sardana delivers a powerful narrative that delves into the complexities of mental health and the aftermath of suicide with sensitivity and grace. Through the lens of various characters grappling with the question of whether suicide is a selfish or cowardly act, Sardana invites readers to confront their perceptions and biases surrounding mental illness. The book doesn't shy away from exploring the profound ripple effects of suicide on families and communities, portraying the raw emotions and struggles with authenticity. What truly resonates is Sardana's ability to humanize the characters, allowing their pain and vulnerabilities to shine through with heartbreaking clarity. As the story unfolds, readers are compelled to ponder the fragility of life and the importance of compassion and understanding in the face of adversity. "The Girl with the Broken Dreams" is not just a book; it's a poignant reminder of the importance of empathy and the power of hope in overcoming life's darkest moments.

this book was good. i was glad to know that the story isn’t over yet. i haven’t read any books by an indian author despite being indian myself so this was a good start for it.

it could’ve reached the 4.5 mark had the elements not been that obvious and clear. maybe it was supposed to be? i loved the main character, her flaws, her development throughout the story.

but what i loved the most was the plot of the story. it was nothing mentioned in a crime-thriller i’ve read before. it was a good refresher for once and got me more curious about it. the author really did a great job at wording the story and adding in occasional indian words and sentences to give it an actual feel.

looking forward to the sequel to this book. i want to know more about what happens later in the book.
