A City Without Birds

“The cameras aren’t watching you. You’re watching yourself.”

Terry Silver doesn’t know she’s living a lie. Despite the feisty attitude that angers her university teachers, she’s unaware of the dissentious thoughts erased from her mind, or the half-truths fed to millions of Seranidians to maintain the paradise of the City. Even, of the fact that she may have taken a life.

But when the mysterious Professor Camus Remin whisks her from the crosshairs of Seranid's elite killing squad and into Slums, she finds stolen memories, including ones of her long-dead father, and a people trampled by innovation, who call her the Phoenix that will herald the rebirth of the nation.

As Terry tries to foment an uprising, she faces more than her own resurfacing trauma, the deaths of loved ones, and the looming threat of an all-out nuclear war. She’s forced to ask what price would you pay for change?

Hey there!

I love writing science fiction & fantasy exploring the flaws with our world. "A City Without Birds" is my debut dystopian novel.

When not writing, I'm probably busy building planes or reading about physics.

A City Without Birds is a standalone dystopia novel, something which doesn't happen too often. Following Terry and the Resistance she finds herself a part of, we see how she grows from a girl under control of the City, Seranid, to a strong fighter taking the lead in fighting back.

This is really action packed, and sometimes it could have used a little more description so I fully knew what was happening, but it's incredibly well written and kept up the pace for the whole book, which was impressive. I never felt like I was slogging through the story.

I really enjoyed the ending, where Terry paused to reflect on what had happened, and everything that would happen in the future, and I loved the glimpse into her life in the future as an adult, too. The story felt fully finished, and I was happy to leave her world knowing she would be okay.
